With an increasing average lifespan, many Americans are physically active throughout adulthood, and well into their senior years.

One of the main branches of medicine that deals with sports-related injuries is orthopedics. It’s not uncommon to find orthopedic providers with their own sports injury experiences, like Dena Mahre, PA-C with KVH Orthopedics. ”I had injuries in high school that took me out of sports and got me involved with athletic training,” says Mahre. “That sparked an interest in not just my own return to sports, but also helping other people in the same way.”

Mahre realizes that while not everyone is an athlete, people generally want to maintain their levels of activity, but injuries, aging, or other conditions slow us down. That’s where orthopedics often comes in.

“Maybe you want to get back to gardening, or walking your dog,” says Mahre. “What we do is about helping people with bone and joint issues get back to living the life they want to live.”
