The film series kicks off Sept. 20, with a twist — outdoor movies. Central students have two ver y popular events to look forward to in October. The following information is off the e vents calendar at www.cwu. edu/events.
The fun stuff is back, or at least quite a bit of it is. After a year of doing many activities remotely, Central Washington University will once again be offering students in-person diversions they have traditionally enjoyed.
Haunting at Central: 9 p.m., Oct. 30), Student and Recreation Center Room 135. Dress up and head down to the SURC for a night of fright. Haunting at Central is taking over the SURC, and will feature attractions like Zombie Zone, a terrifying haunted house, black light bowling and more. Dia de los Muertos festival, 6 p.m., Nov. 3, Student Union and Recreation Center Ballroom Room 215A. To emulate a traditional Dia de los Muertos celebration, a procession led by CWU Mariachi will leave at 5 p.m. from the Barge Hall courtyard and end at the SURC Ballroom. In this time, attendees will have an opportunity to honor their loved ones by laying a photo of the deceased on an altar. The festival will begin at 6 p.m. and will feature CWU Mariachi music and Aztec dancing, family-friendly craft tables

COVID REQUIREMENTS Like universities across the state, Central Washington University is requiring students (and employees) to be vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus prior to the start of fall quarter. According to information posted on Central’s website, proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 will be required by Oct. 18, unless a medical or religious accommodation request is approved by Human Resources.
HOW TO SUBMIT
Students can submit their vaccination records prior to the start of fall quarter (Sept. 22) by following directions on the Student Health Services website. Proof of vaccination will be required by Oct. 18.
ONLINE STUDENTS
Per CWU President James Wohlpart’s Aug. 24 communication, vaccinations will be required of all members of the CWU community — employees and students, including those who learn and work at university centers and instructional sites and those who learn in virtual environments, even if totally online. Only international students living outside the United States and high school students enrolled in CWU’s College in the High School program are exempt.

GETTING AROUND TOWN
Any supply list for a Central Washington University student needs to contain one particular item — a good pair of shoes.
Whether you’ve got a class to get to or you just want to stroll and take in nature, you’re in luck, because the CWU campus and the surrounding community were made for walking. A compact footprint, flat grading and an abundance of wide pedestrian malls make the Ellensburg campus a breeze to navigate on foot. Ellensburg’s vibrant downtown area — home to numerous and varied local businesses — can be reached on foot from campus in just five or six minutes. Most necessities are within easy walking range for students located on or near campus. The campus also has easy access to the cross-state Palouse to Cascades Trail (what locals still call the John Wayne Trail). Not everything is an easy walk, though. Ellensburg’s southern end can be a bit of a trek. Students looking to take in a movie at Grand Meridian Cinema or partake of the local fast food row, might find themselves with a 30-40 minute one-way excursion on their hands.

Freshman are allowed to have vehicles, but there’s no guarantee finding parking will be easy. Parking in many lots on campus requires a permit; for students, those run $116 per quarter or $247 for a calendar year. If you live on or near campus, walking will probably get you to your class faster than driving and without the risk of parking in a spot that may get you a ticket. Parking services are fairly effective and efficient in ticketing vehicles parked where they shouldn’t be.
Central Transit
Luckily, having your own car or a friend with a car isn’t the only way to quickly get around town without foot power. The city of Ellensburg operates its own bus system called Central Transit, with four routes that take riders through every part of town, even all the way out west to Love’s truck stop and Interstate-90. Though Central Transit is operated by the city, it stays true to its name, keeping campus at the center of its travels. Central Transit routes have multiple stops on each end of campus, so you can get from campus to anywhere in town without walking. Every bus is wheelchair accessible and have bike racks. Each route departs hourly, Monday through Friday, with weekends routes as well. The best part of Central Transit is that every ride is free, so you can hop on and off without worrying about forgetting a bus pass or racking up transfer fees.
Outside Town
Many students bring cars to school not just to get around town but also so they can drive home on weekends. For that, too, there are mass transit options. For students living along Puget Sound or out of state, the Bellair Airporter shuttle offers rides every day to and from Sea-Tac Airport. Flixbus also runs buses through Ellensburg to destinations around the region. The Airporter stops in Ellensburg at the Starbucks near campus five times every day and just this summer opened a second stop at Love’s truck stop. Flixbus stopes near Starubcks as well. An express bus that runs from the Yakima Airport to Central’s Student Union and Recreation Center with six stops in between, the Yakima Commuter operates Monday through Friday. It runs seven times a day during the school year, with the first bus leaving Yakima at 6:10 a.m. and the last bus arriving back in Yakima at 6:29 p.m. Tickets for the bus are $5 (cash fare) each way or $150 for a monthly pass. If you purchase a one-way ticket you can get a transfer ticket from the driver that can be used on Yakima Transit buses.

Greyhound
Greyhound operates a bus stop next to Love’s Travel Stop, providing access to the international bus service’s extensive North American network. The Greyhound bus stop can be reached via Central Transit.
Bike Boulevard
The city of Ellensburg provides a Bike Boulevard, a more bikefriendly route running east-west through town. sponsored by
The route runs along Seventh Avenue, one block south of University Way. The city chose Seventh in part because University wasn’t deemed wide enough to install bike lanes, and the relatively low traffic volume on seventh made the change low impact and less likely to create bike-vehicle conflicts. The Bike Boulevard still crosses intersections, so bicyclists must be alert to cross traffic, but it gives them priority, making the ride smoother and safer.

HOMECOMING EVENTS The COVID-19 pandemic continues to add a layer of complication to live entertainment. CWU’s Homecoming is not immune to those complications. The university continues to work to line up entertainment Homecoming (Oct. 21-23), but as the school year approaches there are still some unknown elements. WHAT’S GOING ON O Buskers in the Burg – Sept. 24-25
Buskers in the Burg is an annual music and performance festival which will kick off at 5 p.m. on Friday the 24th with a downtown sneak preview of some of the music to be heard during the rest of the event. This will be followed by the Buskers Comedy Kickoff a 21+ event at Gard Vintners on Pearl Street in downtown Ellensburg featuring visiting comedians. Saturday features the heart of Buskers in the Burg — musicians and entertainers performing throughout the downtown from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It also features a downtown art parade and kids activitiies For a full schedule and list of performers, visit the Buskers in the Burg website.
KEEN Windfall Ciderfest, 3-9 p.m., Oct. 2
For 21+ students who enjoy the best ciders in the region, the place to be will be the Windfall Ciderfest at the Kittitas Valley Event center. This event is slated to feature five bands and 12 cider houses. In a nod to the times, attendance will be limited and all attendees will be required to provide proof of vaccination. In addition, masks are required in all indoor areas. Organizers ask that people not willing to comply with these requirements not purchase tickets. Tickets are available at www.ycic.org/keen-windfall-ciderfest. The event is a fundraiser for the Kittitas Environmental Education Network.
Ellensburg’s Farmers Market – Every Saturday until Oct. 30
Since May, the Ellensburg’s Farmers Market has been filling the streets of historic downtown Ellensburg every Saturday, and there are still plenty of chances for incoming students and their families to take part in this rich tradition. The market is well-known for its local produce, baked goods, and handmade products, as well as music and other activities. It’s a great way to experience Ellensburg, as you walk around the local museums, art galleries, antique stores and restaurants.

Fall is perhaps Kittitas County’s marquee season and what better way to enjoy it than getting lost in a corn maze. The Patch, 6181 Wilson Creek Road, is open Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 25-Oct. 31, offers not just a corn maze, but hayrides, a petting zoo. a cafe. a bake shop and more. There is a fee for admission, but the fee is not required if you’re there to pick pumpkins. Another popular stop during fall in Dusty’s Nursery, 1116 E. Mountain View Ave., which will have a corn maze and a pumpkin patch through the month of October.

CWU DINING SERVICES What to know about dining changes at CWU
BY JACK BELCHER staff writer There are very few things college students like more than food, and Central Washington University Dinning Services is excited to announce it can reopen a lot of it’s food services, closed by the COVID pandemic. “We plan to reopen all of our dinning locations throughout fall quarter,” Dinning Services Director Dean Masuccio said. “We will be approaching it in somewhat of a phased approach.” However, most dinning areas will be open by the start of classes Sept. 22, although with modified hours. CWU plans for the rest of the dinning options to be available by mid October. The main
thing stoping these places from opening for the start of school is a lack of staffing. Masuccio said once students arrive on campus, the university should have very little problems hiring them to staff their facilities. “We are excited for this fall, because while there are still some COVID-related affects that we have to deal with and manage, we are still planning on reintroducing most of what was in place preCOVID, and now with even some newer additions,” Masuccio said. One of the major changes for the year is the Village, previously named the North Village Cafe, but over the last 18 months the area has been expanded. They have added more market options, seating options, the cafe and added a full grill (which will open soon after the start of school).

“That refreshed concept up in the Northeast corner of campus, the expanded market, finding more grocery-related items to support the apartment system, etc.,” Masuccio said. Another change that occurred over the last 18 months is a “fresh bar” in the Central Marketplace section of the Student Union and Recreation Center (SURC). This provides fresh-squeezed juice, avocado toast and various superfood bowls. There is also a new panini concept that ties into the pizza/pasta area of the marketplace. All campus, except for a few exceptions, will be cashless. This was a change enforced by the state during the pandemic, and is one the university kept. A student will not be able to simply walk into the marketplace ands hand a cashier a $20 bill. Instead, people will need to put that money on a cash card provided by machines around campus. If people do not use all the money they put on a card, refunds will be available through staff at the few cash using locations, such as Cat Trax West. Debit and credit cards are accepted across campus, as well as student Connection cards.
They university is making a push to speed up the food ordering process. Kiosks are stationed in dinning locations around campus, which people can use to make their selections and order food without talking to a cashier. Mobile ordering is getting an upgrade now that the university has partnered with Grubhub. People on campus can use the Grubhub apps on their phones to order food anywhere on campus for pickup. Delivery is not available, although Masuccio said the university is considering ways to make it possible. “The Village is a good example of something that we’ve refreshed during the last 18 months to provide more of an expanded market section that we’ve heard students request over the last couple years,” Masuccio said. “And then mobile ordering will help a lot of students and campus community use the venues at their leisure, it’s a much more convenient option to take. We imaging mobile ordering will allow us to sustain operations and expand them going into October.”
