DO question & answer

Etiquette Q&A Owner & Event Coordinator Jessica Kerher of Serendipitous Events by jessica

1. How can we cut wedding costs?

Cutting costs can be fairly simple once you determine the three most important elements of your wedding. Make sure to include your soon-to-be groom in this decision. It is his wedding as well as yours. Some areas you might cut costs: 1. Flatware. 2. For an outdoor wedding, you might share chairs with the wedding before or after. 3. Hiring a planner helps you meet vendors that are within your budget. A planner can often take specific details and find cost effective ways to create the ambiance you are looking to obtain. 2. How can I tell a friend she isn’t a bridesmaid?

Serendipitous Events by Jessica: 605.321.6689 Sioux Falls, South Dakota www.serendipitouseventsbyjessica.com

Avoid her. KIDDING! Do not avoid! That is the last thing you should do. Any true friend will understand that you may have people in your life that you are closer with at the time of your wedding. With that being said, it will not be easy to tell that friend that he or she is not in your wedding. I suggest a cup of coffee or a glass of wine with an honest explanation. It is best to get a feel for this person and to ask them if they would like to be involved in any other way. Do not put them somewhere like “the cake cutter” unless they really have a desire to help…they will resent the position. On this note, never feel obligated to have someone in your wedding that you are not close with. This is your day!

3. Can guests be invited to the bridal shower or bachelorette party if they are not invited to the wedding?

Many factors come into play here. How big will your wedding be? Will your wedding

12 | DO ^

include only close family? Who is throwing the shower? It is almost impossible to say that someone will not be offended if they are invited to the shower and not the wedding. This is a very individualized question. As far as the bachelorette party, you should only invite guests who will be attending your wedding unless, of course, your wedding is family only.

4. How do we edit our guest list?

This can be difficult, because if someone made the list, they are most likely important to you. Are you allowing children at your wedding? Specifically address your invitations...do not say “and family” unless you want the entire family. Talk to your parents and ask them to help by eliminating people they have added to your list. Again, this is your wedding. You and your parents will need to have a clear discussion beforehand about payments--who is making them, and if your parents help, does that mean they get to have whatever and whoever they want?

5. His parents are not contributing, but they want a say...

Too bad! Again, I’m kidding...kind of. They may throw the rehearsal dinner. In all seriousness, these are your in-laws and they will be for the rest of your life. Let them have an opinion, and all you need to say is “thank you, I will consider that.” Traditionally the groom’s parents throw the rehearsal dinner, however if they are unable, you can still have the dinner, but it becomes your (or your parents’) responsibility.

DO personalize 8 Ways to Personalize Your Wedding There are plenty of traditional aspects when planning a wedding: the white dress, black tux, the “Chicken Dance” debate, tossing the garter... Why not get creative when planning your big day? Try incorporating a few of these personal elements and make things memorable for you and your guests.

1

1

Homemade Recipes

Ask your caterer if they are open to using your mom’s meatloaf recipe, grandma’s cherry pie, or your aunt’s stuffed mushrooms. Having a menu that is filled with your family favorites is a sure way to warm the hearts of your guests.

2

You will want to make sure that not only will you and your groom love it, but that it will be a crowd pleaser as well. Be sure to name your cocktail after a special detail of your relationship or the color scheme at the wedding.

3

Handwritten Notes

Tuck a note into each guest napkin. Express what they mean to you or write about a favorite memory with them. Your day flies by fast, leaving little time to truly engage with each guest as much as you would like. This is a sentimental gesture to let everyone know that you appreciate them being there.

4

Reception Table Names

If you are having a seated wedding reception, you should name each table after something personal. This is more unique than numbering each table and is also a fun way to incorporate something special. Try naming tables after places you have traveled together, street names you have lived on, your favorite movies, or tie the names into your wedding theme. 14 | DO ^

5

Sentimental Charm

Incorporate something close to your heart in your bouquet. Carry a photo locket of a loved one who cannot be there with you on the big day. Or, attach a family heirloom, a necklace, an embroidered handkerchief, or note. This can also double as your “something borrowed” or “something blue.”

6

Welcome Bags

Put together baskets or gift bags for out of town guests, giving them information on local favorites. Be sure to include things like: maps, brochures to local activities, your favorite restaurants and bars, a bottle of your favorite local wine, or yummy treats!

8

7

Include Your Pets

Either in person as a ring bearer or as a guest, your pet is a big part of your family. Is your pet too wild for your formal affair? You could use Scruffy as a motif for the décor, as pictures on menus, table numbers, or as signs pointing the way to the reception.

8

Getaway Vehicle

Match your vehicle with your personal style. The traditional limo doesn’t suit everyone. If you prefer vintage, go with a 60’s Rolls-Royce or Jaguar. If you prefer fun-loving with a wild wedding party, go with a Hummer limousine. Other fun ideas could be a golf cart, a moped, a boat, horses, or a truck pulling a flatbed trailer.

Styled Shoot

Warehouse Melody icon event hall, sioux falls, south dakota Photography by Jeff Sampson Photography

18 | DO ^

Each styled shoot stems from a voluminous amount of angles, options and concepts. This envisioned wedding originated with the couple: A trendy, contemporary pair planning the ultimate modern celebration with a passion for each other and for music. Where would we find a venue that was not only funky and ultramodern, but also boasts a great location? Insert Icon Event Hall of downtown Sioux Falls, S.D. Through the bulky, hoisted doors, you immediately imagine the endless possibilities of this lofty space that is also attached to Icon Lounge, an upscale bar and eatery. With its hardwood floors, aged rock walls, soaring ceilings, and warm hues, we knew this would set the perfect ambiance.

We imagined our couple as two people who aren’t afraid to take risks. Kat Christensen of The Beauty Room created a funky bow up-do for Ashley, complimenting her retro gown. The 50’s inspired tea-length dress with a sweetheart neckline is an original hand-sewn number by Jessica Lynn, owner and head designer of Jacklynn. With Ashley’s look, we wanted to demonstrate the beauty of a short frock (which she took full advantage of by adding statement heels from her personal closet). Contrasting formal with laid-back, Colby wore skinny jeans, a purple-stitched Bogosse sport coat, and a polka dot bow tie from Halberstadt’s Men’s Clothiers.

22 | DO ^

We styled the head table to be quirky, yet elegant, combining formal silver chargers and yellow bow tie napkins with vintage vases from Lost Marble Antiques, and simple, light floral. Leigh Willers of Bella Rosa Floral designed flowers so vibrant that they instantly draw to the table. Using deep purples, moss greens, and billy ball yellows, she created a wildflower assortment with eucalyptus, freesia, wax flowers, silver brunia, and blue thistle. Wanting to incorporate a music theme, we lined tables with old-school records as the runner and continued the melodic motif throughout the stationary pieces. For the menus, invites, save-the-dates and programs, owner of Confetti Creative Co., Andrea Snaza, took a hip design approach with custom, hand-drawn characters, circular design elements, and bold fonts.

The music didn’t skip a beat with the dessert table. Traditionally, a wedding cake is a three-tiered confection adorned with a topper that represents the pair. Anne Fregon of The Cake Lady’s Cakes & Confections helped us step out of that stifling box. She made a jaw-dropping record player cake that stole the spotlight with its ornate (and edible!) lid, hinges, crank, turntable, hardware, buttons and needle. Don’t want to cut into such a delectable masterpiece? We paired the wedding cake with an assortment of bite-sized desserts that guests will definitely leave room for. Ending the evening, Chris Hintz of Pinnacle Productions designed a romantic and intimate space for dancing. Using pin-spotting upsidedown parasols, he took a high-ceiling room and transformed it into a cozy, illuminating space with a dynamic design element that will keep the evening going well into the early hours. 26 | DO ^

3. What is the process for a bride and groom to work with you?

Usually it begins with a photo from a magazine, another wedding, website, Google image search, Pinterest, or from my bestie, Martha [Stewart]. From there, things are always added, subtracted and tweaked to fit each couple’s theme or style. I can be inspired from just about anything, from the couple’s invitation to the bride’s gown. I once combined 12 different pictures into one cake. When sitting down talking cake with my couples, I have anywhere from 10-12 different cake flavors for them to sample. I had been in the baking/cake world for eight years when I moved from San Diego to Northwest Iowa in 2004. When looking in the area for a place to work, I was unable to find a bakery that produced the style and quality of cakes I was used to. From there, I made cakes out of my 80-year-old farm for friends and family. Three years ago, my husband and I built a new home complete with my very own bakery attached! 4. What are some trends you are noticing?

Simple and classic. Ninety-eight percent of brides I have recently worked with are looking for simplicity when choosing the outside decoration on their cakes. When choosing flavor, the classics always win out. I have been baking a lot of red velvet, devil’s food and lemon. However, to keep things new, I recommend to fill those cakes with unexpected fillings like cheese cake mousse in red velvet, or my most popular flavor combo of lemon cake with a strawberry mousse (kind of like a strawberry lemonade). 5. What advice would you give to engaged couples?

Most decisions made while planning a wedding reflect things about the couple. Choose flavors that you love, or even flavors that your mother or grandmother made you as a child. Do not choose flavors based on what you think your guests might want to eat.

5 fun facts about Gretchen... ^ I don’t eat cake. I know that I shouldn’t tell people that, but if I made dessert every day, I would need to widen all of my doorways. ^ I’m left-handed, however, everything I do with cake is all done with my right hand. ^ No, I don’t watch Cake Boss, so quit asking. ^ My business is all word of mouth. I’m not even listed in the phone book. ^ I received a “C” on my baking final in school... shhh, don’t tell!

From the bride...

As we are both architects, simple spaces with rich histories seemed the perfect fit. We wanted family and friends to see the range of beauty that Des Moines, Iowa provides--from the beautiful, historically restored Salisbury House & Gardens to the more deteriorated downtown Hohberger Building. The decor was about highlighting the beauty of the spaces in their existing state.

Prior to the wedding ceremony, we had sparkling apple cider with a blackberry garnish for guests upon arrival. This was so they could be directed to the patio to sign our guest book and write a wish for the “paper wish” backdrop. This ceremony backdrop was inspired by my trip to Japan where I discovered the Japanese wish tree. Some of our favorite details were created for the reception. We made terrarium favors using round, glass Christmas bulbs from the craft store, filled them with black sand, and placed a single air plant inside. Each guest left with a small box to take them home in. As for the food, it was fantastic! We had a mixture of Iowa home cooking: squash soup, pork tenderloin, and another table with Asian hot consommé, pot stickers and sushi. In the cake room, we made tissue paper balls that hung from the ceiling over the table. We crafted the cake heart topper by painting a cardboard heart from the craft store and adding glitter. (When I say “we,” I mean my mom. She should take all the credit). One thing we were very adamant about was capturing a large group picture. We thought of releasing red balloons as a way to actively bring everyone together after the ceremony and get a fun shot.

The overall atmosphere was intended to be honest about who we are and where we have traveled. As we planned the different details and aspects of our wedding, we understood a common duality to our past--a little country and a little urban, a little west and a little east. We’ve both traveled around for school and work. Along the way, so many people have touched our lives in a variety of ways. One great revelation during the festivities was seeing all of the people of our lives, unknown to each other, meet and create new connections. 36 | DO ^

juliet’s inspiration

Juliet & Matt Sylvan Lake Lodge, Custer State Park, South Dakota Photography by Mindy Myers Photography

From the bride...

Matt and I met as teachers in the South Dakota corps of Teach For America. We worked on two different reservations, but most of our first dates were in Rapid City or the gorgeous Black Hills. Our first decision–where to get married–was the easiest. Sylvan Lake was the first place we ever said “I love you.” Matt is from Nebraska and I’m from Iowa, however, we were both living in Illinois at the time, so we decided to make it a full destination wedding weekend for our guests. We organized a weekend of adventures, including a hike up Harney Peak and a welcome campfire on Friday night. Getting to see our friends from all different points in our lives bonding together over the weekend was one of the greatest parts, and for that reason, I’d highly recommend a destination wedding to any other bride.

Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park is a gorgeous, rustic setting, and we wanted to mirror that in our style choices. We went for a classy-folksy feel: Big vases of curly willow and greenery, little mason jars stuffed with wildflowers, typewriters and cowboy boots, beautiful hardbound books, handkerchiefs, and baskets of petals. Most of our projects were DIY. Matt’s a librarian and I’m a lawyer, so we combined law and libraries and ended up with stacks of books on tables, a Dewey Decimal seating system complete with an escort card catalogue, and ceremony programs themed like old-fashioned official court orders. I cut up my Civil Procedure textbook to make paper cones for guests to toss petals from, which was--I’ll admit--incredibly satisfying to tear to pieces! Matt’s mom hand-stamped bookmarks as favors for our guests, and our incredibly talented friend drew us a tree for guests to fingerprint and sign. All the little details, the pretty things, and the DIY projects we spent hours on fade away in comparison to the feeling of being surrounded by loved ones on our special day.

DO how to Ask Your Bridesmaids to Stand Up With You “It’s not where you are in life, it’s who you have by your side that matters.” - Author unknown. by Jessica Weischedel

Being a bridesmaid...

in a wedding can be a very stressful task. It is the members of the bridal party that usually take on the responsibility of ensuring their engaged friend is calm and collected, taking care of them and making sure they have everything needed for the entire day of celebration.

48 | DO ^

- Flower Delivery -

- Gift Their Apparel -

Send or hand-deliver a bouquet of flowers to each person with a note or a poem about being your bridesmaid. If they are the flowers you plan on using for the wedding, include a message requesting them to carry something similar in the future as they walk down the aisle with you. For long distance friends, some flower companies offer a typed note to be included with the delivery, or you could call them and ask them to write the note for you. The flowers will remind them of you and get them excited for your wedding day every time they see them.

It is common for bridesmaids to pay for the dress you choose for them to wear on your wedding day. Why not ask them to say yes to the dress by giving it to them as a gift? Wrapped up like a present with a card explaining to them why you want them to be such a big part of your day, it is a definite way of expressing how much you care about them. If you do not quite know yet what dress you want them to wear, give them a gift card to use towards their dress to the store you have in mind. Other things your potential bridesmaid will wear, such as her shoes or jewelry, could also be given as a gift. A gift card to the salon would also be a big help and a great way to show her how much you appreciate them.

Photos: 283 Photography

As the bride-to-be, you are giving your friends this responsibility. Although this could be a daunting task to some, asking your best friends to stand up with you as you tie the knot is a huge honor and a great way to show them how special they are to you. With all of the little things to worry about while planning a wedding, sometimes it is hard to come up with a unique way to pop the question to your potential bridesmaid. It is perfectly fine to take your friends to dinner and ask them in person or on the phone if they live far away, but if you are wanting to do something a bit more out of the ordinary, here are some creative ways to ask.

| 49

DO how to

- Send Sweet Words Who doesn’t love something sweet? Combine your sweet words of why she is so special to you with some edible delights and it will surely make her smile. From cookies to cupcakes, there are so many cute ways to decorate a dessert and to ask someone to be your bridesmaid. Make a special order for cookies in the shape of a dress and choose a color that is similar to the one you might want them to wear. Write each girl’s name on the cookie or even ask the question with frosting. Accompany the sweets with a personalized card and a gift-wrapped box and ribbon and have it delivered to her door, or arrange them on a decorative plate and hand-deliver the goods to their front door.

- Craft a Card Come up with a custom project to really personalize your question to each bridesmaid. This adorable idea of cutting out the shape of a dress in the color you are planning on using and creating a paper chain of bridesmaids, each with their own unique hair style, is a very creative and cute way of asking them to be in your wedding. Simply measure the envelope you plan to use and cut some craft paper down accordingly, making sure the height of the paper chain will fit into the envelope. Fold the paper accordion style, leaving a space for each person you will be creating. On the top of the folded stack, draw the shape of your bridesmaid with arms and legs going right to the edge of the paper. Cut your shape out, making sure you leave the arms and legs attached, and open up your bridesmaid chain. Use colored paper to decorate the ladies with personalized hairstyles and the dresses they will wear, and draw some faces and write their names on each one. Create a card with the question and include some wedding details if you know them already in order to give them some helpful information about their duties and plans for the day. Place the paper chain on top of the card and wrap them together with a band of paper that includes the name of the person you will be sending it to. Place in an envelope addressed to your friend and send away with anticipation!

French Country Affair

From the bride...

When Jake and I began planning our wedding, we decided the most important component was the backdrop. It was important that our wedding would be welcoming and a reflection of our personalities. My parents live on an acreage that consists of a 1920’s-style home, an oasis of flowers, gardens, and trees. This is where we wanted our reception!

“The time spent with family and friends leading up to the wedding were some of the best days of my life. ~ Liz

I love the vintage, elegant look of French Country and wanted to use it throughout the reception. My mother, a florist, insisted on creating all of the floral. We used a mix of garden roses, dahlias, and orchids in vibrant colors. Instead of renting plates, friends and family scoured antique stores and attics for Blue Willow dishes, which we used for place settings. We scattered mirrors, silver and chandeliers throughout the yard to create an elegant feel. We constructed an outdoor living room with wicker patio sets for guests to lounge on. I bought various blue print fabric, and friends volunteered to sew them into overlays and napkins. My dad and father-in-law bent old forks into place card holders. Jake comes from a ranching family, and we designed the menu to reflect that. We tucked sprigs of rosemary from the garden on each place setting and served burgers with a variety of gourmet toppings, as well as Belgian-style frites with dipping sauces. During the days leading up to the wedding, our yard was literally filled with family and friends trimming trees, setting tables, ironing tablecloths and arranging flowers.

lindsay’s inspiration

Lindsay & Tanner fair hills resort, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota Photography by Katie Lewis Photography

Lakeside Fairytale From the bride...

Our vision for the big day was to create a garden wedding that had a mix of elegant, organic and rustic elements. We spent countless hours together preparing every detail. Tanner made the birch arch for the ceremony, birch candle and card holders. I created the design for our wedding invitations. We made flower balls, stuffed welcome bags for out-of-town guests, and poured honey into favor jars. My amazing bridesmaids and personal attendants helped with tags for our wish tree, save the dates, drink stirrers, and programs.

We really wanted people to walk away from our wedding with a better knowledge of us. We personalized our ceremony by writing our own vows and somehow made it through without shedding too many tears! Now looking back, I’m really glad we focused a lot of our attention on the ceremony. Sometimes those details get overlooked. The ceremony is definitely a time where true, raw emotions show and everyone gets to see a different side of you.

“Tanner surprised me with a poem that he wrote. I was pretty good at keeping it together throughout the day, but at that moment--I lost it! ~ Lindsay

Live music was a big part of our day. A piano, cello and violin trio played some of our favorites at the ceremony. A steel drum player entertained guests at the cocktail hour, and the Johnny Holm Band was a huge hit at the reception. Our goal was to make our reception tent cozy and relaxing, yet fun and beautiful. My mom and I made cushions for the benches and decorative pillows to soften up the space. Kim at Prairie Petal did an amazing job with creating a lush, romantic and organic look.

Styled Shoot

Outdoor Rustic private family farm, chester, south dakota Photography by picturesque photography

82 | DO ^

When it comes to weddings, there really is no place like home. When dreaming up this styled shoot, whispers of romance, sentiments of Grandpa’s rustic farm, and simple antiques came to mind. Although it may be more work (and sometimes more expensive) than you anticipated, saying your vows in your childhood backyard can be one of the most rewarding aspects of planning your wedding. After winding down a dusty gravel road, breathing in fresh country air, and hearing the baas of sheep, this styled shoot took us straight to a private family farm in Chester, S.D.

daintyobsessions.com

| 85

We conceptualized a sophisticated, yet casual menu of hand-held bites to compliment the down-home feel. Jessica Fontenille and Stacey Klinnert of Chef Dominique’s Catering created a beyond-amazing spread that perfectly fit the occasion. Incorporating comfort food favorites, like mini bacon cheeseburgers with wood sticks, shrimp shooters, honey sesame cocktails, gourmet stuffed mushrooms, open-faced chicken salad sandwiches with asparagus and prosciutto, mini twice-baked potatoes, and stuffed artichokes, you are guaranteed to please everyone’s refined palate, while happily abandoning formalities. We paralleled the tastefully subdued approach with our dessert table, a re-purposed dresser. Choosing to forgo a traditional wedding cake all together, we opted for a scrumptious assortment of old fashioned donuts and bear claws stuffed into vintage drawers and accompanied with milk in classic glass bottles. 86 | DO ^

For the bride and groom, we sought after a couple just as gorgeous and down-to-earth as our concept, Kaylee and John Koch. Lacey Mae of Lacey Mae Hair and Makeup did a masterful job bringing whimsical drama to Kaylee; creating soft, warm makeup and a voluminous side braid. Her bold lips and feather-filled gown was accompanied by Corral cowboy boots from AMaVo Boutique. Gunderson’s Jewelry added sparkle to her look with gorgeous jewels. Tip Top Tux styled our groom in a grey tux, soft pink vest, and matching tie. Utilizing the heart of the farm, we styled the exchanging of vows in the barn entry between a set of long, creme drapes, and a stunning chandelier from Lee Douglas Interiors.

daintyobsessions.com

| 89

Keeping true to our dreamy barn affair, we instantly thought of Lost Marble Antiques to help stage our head table. We created a table runner from paper doilies and assembled a cluster of vintage perfume bottles as the main centerpiece. Fall-inspired plates were adorned with place settings wrapped in jute and topped with individual vintage keys. Joyce Naber of Elaborations by Joyce Naber filled an eclectic mix of clear glass vases, using gorgeous tulips, King Protea, ranunculus, and then intertwined antler horns across the table to give a feminine and rustic finishing touch.

patricia’s inspiration

Patricia & Jon bar lurcat, Minneapolis, Minnesota Photography by Adrienne page Photography

Downtown Chic

From the bride...

Jon and I currently reside in Boston, however I knew I wanted to get married in Minneapolis, where I grew up. We wanted the entire wedding day to feel like an intimate dinner party. Both Jon and I are foodies and I have always been involved in food, so in addition to working in various restaurants and specialty food stores, I also studied culinary in France. For this reason, food and wine was a major importance! Bar Lurcat is where we chose to have both the ceremony and reception. The space is gorgeous as is, which meant we didn’t need to do a lot to transform it. The cozy and elegant feel of the space fit the theme perfectly! Jon and I always felt like our wedding should be very personal, which is why we kept it under 100 people. One of my favorite details of the wedding was the hand-written seating cards and menus that Jon wrote. Not only were they genuine and rustic, but it saved on printing costs. It was a no-brainer! I adored the Yum! cakes that were displayed on vintage stands along with silver urns filled with flowers. We went with the Patti Cake, my favorite chocolate cake in the city! Our most sentimental aspect of our reception was using the champagne glasses Jon’s parents used at their wedding as our own for our champagne at dinner.

92 | DO ^

daintyobsessions.com | 3

When it came to the meal, food at Lurcat is amazing! We really focused a lot of attention on the menu. We had them serve farmer’s market bites of radishes, beans, carrots, crudite with Pimento cheese dip, oysters on the half shell, tuna tartare on spoons, apple salad on spoons, baby lamb chops, and crab cakes during the cocktail hour. We incorporated family-style sweet corn, tomatoes and french fries into the dinner menu as well. Presentation means a lot when it comes to serving food. We loved every detail put into the dishes, from the trays to the garnishes. Another sweet aspect was the trees that we incorporated into the ceremony to mimic a chuppah (a canopy which a bride and groom stand under during the exchange of vows in a Jewish wedding). Because we were married in the dining room at Lurcat, we didn’t think twice about leaving the kitchen doors open. I loved that it was part of the ceremony. However, the trees were able to take the focal point of the room from the kitchen to the point where we were married. They were very magical! 94 | DO ^

Erin & Daniel Bruce

THE LOCATION: Lanai, Hawaii Married: October 15, 2011 Venue: Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska

For Erin and Daniel Bruce, this remote Hawaiian island checked all the right boxes: A location to spend intentional quality time together, true relaxation, a warm beach, and adventure. The island boasts two different experiences--the first being warm sandy beaches, fine dining, palm trees, and the other being rugged back roads, mountains with pine trees, and four-wheel paths to explore.

The Stay: The Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay Voted one of Travel & Leisure readers’ Best Beach Resorts, Manele Bay will take your breath away. “We originally did not have an oceanview room, but we upgraded upon arrival. We folded under minor pressure by the hotel due to our lack of sleep, hunger and amazing ocean smells when we arrived,” says Erin. Her favorite part? “The bed! It was amazing! I wrote in my journal that it was like sleeping on clouds.” 104 | DO ^

The Activities & Excursions: Having 12 days to work with, Erin and Daniel made a flexible game plan with 3-4 days of adventure and 3-4 days of no set plans. This approach satisfied the plan-oriented for her and the spontaneous for him. The newlyweds enjoyed nine hours of sleep each night, reading by the pool, swimming in the ocean, hot stone massages, and yoga class. On one of the more adventurous days, Erin and Daniel rented a Jeep to venture off the beaten path. “The terrain changes from meadows to boulders to forest in the blink of an eye,” says Erin. “We took advantage of our Jeep’s accessibility and stopped on the side of the road. We brought our coffees, a blanket, our camera, a bible, and jumped the fence to spend the next couple of hours watching the sun rise over the ocean waters and light our surroundings. It was an amazing experience!”

Dennis & Linda

(Schmidt) Daugaard

Meet sweethearts turned Governor and First Lady of South Dakota, Dennis and Linda Daugaard. With 31 years of marriage under their belts, they know a few things about having and maintaining a successful relationship. Linda has been an irreplaceable rock to husband Dennis through years of campaigning, raising three children, and coping with the ups and downs of life.

How did the two of you meet?

How do you deal with disagreements?

closed, so he started 8th grade at Dell Rapids Public School. We were introduced at a dance at the Legion Hall by a friend of Linda’s --Chuck Schwebach--who had transferred to the Public School that year. Our first dance was “House of the Rising Sun.”

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it?

We had very little money as we both

Then

had quit our jobs in Chicago and California and moved back to South Dakota to get married. Our first job was working together doing maintenance, mowing, and showing apartments at Westbrooke Apartments on the west side of Sioux Falls as Dennis studied for the South Dakota Bar Exam and Linda studied for her real estate license. It was great to spend time together as we were already such good friends. We didn’t need money to have fun, and we enjoyed visiting our families in Dell Rapids.

Now

as well as their friends, and later on their spouses. We had our families and many friends who never wavered and were a tremendous support to us.

How do you keep your marriage “alive”?

By new experiences and sharing them together. You must have a sense of humor in every marriage.

What is one of your favorite moments in your marriage?

The birth of our children. We were married at 28 years old and experienced some struggles in having kids. It was such a blessing when our children arrived. Did you experience the “empty nest syndrome”?

We are deliberate about spending time together. We routinely go out on dates and celebrate special occasions. 112 | DO ^

Now we can leave the house, and when we return, it is the same way we left it. Our kids live close by so we can see them often or keep in touch via phone.
