It’s finally here! Volume 1 | No. 2 of Dainty Obsessions-- (Yep, still exciting). On one hand, our very first issue of DO hitting shelves seems like yesterday; however, on the other hand, our winter issue couldn’t have come soon enough. Being the “type A”, perfectionists that we are, we’ve spent the past two months finding every possible way to make our second issue even prettier than the last. With even more jaw-dropping Midwest weddings, take-your-breath-away styled shoots, and simple photographs that inspire creativity, we’ve fashioned a winter issue that we are sure will leave you wanting more. And that’s not all. In the past couple months we’ve already added a larger distribution range (we now span a six-state region), added and collaborated with even more fabulous wedding professionals, increased the page count of inspiration, filled subscriptions for DO across the country, and personally met and talked with hundreds of brides who, just like us, are hungry for a quality resource. Thank you to all who took the time to express your love for us! The overwhelming support from all your conversations, e-mails, text messages, Facebook “likes,” etc. have meant the world to us. Thank you for picking up our second issue of Dainty Obsessions. We hope these pages will bring a smile to your face and add some sparkle to your wedding day!

DO question & answer Etiquette Q&A Owner & Event Coordinator Alicia Weigel of Bliss Events & Weddings

No, you do not. Address the invitation with just the single person’s name on it. Most people will understand that the invitation does not include another guest. If you do start seeing +1’s appearing in your RSVP’s, it is best to call the guests and explain that you are not able to invite everyone, but that there will be other single guests attending.

We are having an adult-only wedding (no kids). How can we make sure this is clear to our guests?

Bliss Events & Weddings: 701.261.4730 Fargo, North Dakota www.blissweddingsfargo.com

Make sure to only address the envelope in the adult guests’ name. The term “and family” or listing each child is the proper way to invite children, but “Mr. and Mrs. Anderson” indicates just those two guests are invited. If RSVPs come in and includes children, it is best to call and explain to the guest that it is an adults-only event.

Do I need to have the same number of bridesmaids as groomsmen?

No! It is your wedding, so you pick the people that are closest to you, whether the number matches up or not. There are a variety of fun ways to arrange your attendants for pictures and during the ceremony, so matching numbers will not matter.

My fiancé and I are getting married in Jamaica. Are we expected to help any members of our bridal party pay for their airfare?

Typically, your bridal party will pay for their travel expenses, although any meals during the wedding itself need to be covered if they are not already included. Remember that if you are not paying for travel expenses, the decision is up to the guest if they can be in the wedding. If you are planning to contribute towards travel expenses, it is best to be up front right away with that information.

Who pays for the rehearsal dinner?

Traditionally it has been the groom’s family paying for the rehearsal dinner, but in recent trends, wedding expenses are being split between both the bride and groom’s families. The best way to approach who pays for what is to have a conversation with both families and whoever is involved with financials and discuss exactly what everyone wishes to contribute to. This eliminates confusion and frustration when bills start coming due.

How do I let guests know what the dress code is?

If you are having a specific dress code, it is best to list this at the bottom of the invitation or on the reception information card. The most well-known dress code categories are: Black-Tie, Cocktail Attire, or Formal Attire.

Reception Games More and more couples are planning their weddings with their guests’ entertainment in mind. A current wedding trend is incorporating games into the wedding reception. Games can help guests relax, keep children entertained, or give non-dancers something to do while mingling. Here are a few of our favorite games for your guests.

1

Personalized Coloring Books

If you are concerned about the amount of children attending your wedding, be sure to include activities for the younger crowd. Crayons and coloring books are a classic way for children to pass time and will get their creativity flowing. Add a personal touch by having custom coloring books created to depict your special day.

2

Having a backyard affair or not into dancing? Croquet, Bocce Ball, or Bags are always a hit. These outdoor, leisurely activities are low-key and encourage family and friends to mingle and have fun. Grab a cocktail and challenge another couple to Horseshoes.

3

I Spy

Create an adorable list of photo ideas and leave the list on each table. Encourage people to take photos with their camera or phone, upload them to Facebook and tag you and your hubby in them. You will be delighted with the random moments your friends and family capture throughout the evening.

4

Mad Libs

Yep, Mad Libs are back--wedding style! Have these on the table for guests to have a little fun, or better yet, incorporate this idea as a twist to the traditional guest book. Collect them in a drop box, and after the big day you can bind them into a book. These will be entertaining to read for years down the road.

5

Pop Quiz

Have your guests answer trivia questions about your relationship. Each of your guests may know you individually, as a couple, or from different avenues of life. Create an entertaining list of questions for friends and family. This will encourage chatting amongst themselves to find the right answer.

Bluegrass Love

Historic Madison Ranch Bed & Breakfast, Black Hills, South Dakota Photography by Kelli Lyn Photography

20 | DO ^

Soft, rolling hills, rustic barn wood, and “West River sunlight naturally brings us to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Stylist Kelli of Kelli Lyn Photography envisioned cool colors like champagne, blush, and hints of navy blue harmonizing with a soft, ethereal feel. In the heart of the nationally historic area, nestled in the trees, sits Madison Ranch B&B. Their natural and organic backdrop exudes a romantic ambiance and a peaceful state, creating the perfect locale for love. We dug deep to our grassroots to pull together a style that not only paints a bluegrass picture, but adds a delicate touch of sophistication.

Amanda and Tanner Sogge were styled by the talented Stormy Lermeny of AJ’s Wicked Salon & Spa. Going for the au naturel, Stormy created a soft, romantic look with relaxed waves paired with pale pink cheeks and nude lips, which enhanced the natural beauty of Amanda. Effortless in Ruche’s Gwen gown, Amanda owned the ever-so charming sweetheart neckline and beautifully textured bodice that gave way to a tulle dress cascading with layers for graceful movement. The show stopping Mi Amour lace hairpiece by Ruche pulled the look all together.

24 | DO ^

Taking serious notes from his “bride, Tanner found a casual, yet fashionable outfit in his own personal closet, combining khakis with suspenders and a snap buttoned-up collared shirt. Kelli created the head table to reflect the free spirit couple and down-to-earth compositions. Using an old band stand on the Madison Ranch property, she styled crisp-blue place settings amongst an eclectic mix of silver urns and platters. Hand making name cards out of blue terracotta coasters and chicken wire, we inserted custom-designed pieces from Alyssa McDowell of Hyacinth Mine. Using warm colors, a natural envelope, and her pretty designs, Alyssa created a suite set that perfectly coordinated with the aesthetic of the shoot.

Using varied sizes of antique crates for height and decor, we placed six and three-inch-round confections from Piece of Cake Bakery and Cafe. Frosted with simple, vertical lines out of butter cream frosting, the bakery accented the delicacies with some of Mother Nature’s favorite “candies.” Topped with raspberries, blueberries and pistachios, and accented with plums and dried mangos, they truly nailed the meaning of organic. Envisioning flowers to coordinate with the Hills of the west, Paula and Diana of Flowers by LeRoy created a stunning and an assorted mix of white roses, blue and purple thistle, allium, black millet, spray safari sunset, scabiosa pods and varigated pittosporum. With something nostalgic about the Black Hills, our Bluegrass affair oozes a bit of amour for everyone.

DO get to know

The Cake Lady Owner and baker, Anna Andachter of The Cake Lady specializes in custom wedding cakes and specialty confections. The Cake Lady masters her skills with self-developed recipes and cake-crafting techniques.

1. How did you start your business?

The Cake Lady: 605-370-1909 Sioux Falls, South Dakota www.thecakeladysf.com

From humble beginnings in my mom’s kitchen, the original Cake Lady was created. Before I was born, [my mom] began creating for friends and family and continued with me by her side for over 40 years. After marrying, I moved from Washington to South Dakota, and after my father’s passing my mom moved to the state as well. With her move in November of 2009, we started a licensed kitchen and became The Cake Lady’s Cakes & Confections. My mom is now semi-retired (we love having her back to help in the kitchen) and now we are The Cake Lady. 2. What sets you and your work apart?

Our process starts with a consultation. The consultation is where I sit down with the couple and after learning about them and their wedding plans, I sketch what I envision their wedding cake could be like. They are able to look through our portfolio and taste different flavors and fillings we have to offer. Official booking usually follows with a short homework list for the couple. One to two weeks prior to their wedding there is a final consultation when we need the color swatches, cake toppers, and we finalize the number of servings needed. Last is delivery and occasionally cut-and-serving at the reception.

4. What inspires you and your designs?

My designs are inspired by my couples, fashion and other works of art. It is fun to follow current trends in other areas of events and fashion and watch them

Photos: AC Ellis Photography.

I think what sets us apart is our history and our passion for both the art of the flavor as well as the presentation. Our recipes have been handcrafted through the years, while our custom sketches are brought to life with carefully-honed skills.

trickle into weddings. We try to stay a step ahead by developing and trying new techniques with flavors, frosting, and even hand painting.

5. What are some trends you are noticing?

The biggest trend tends to be individuality. The range of ideas, requests, and customization are wonderful. We are getting more requests for 3D cakes, lots of textures, and naked cakes (no icing). 6. What advice would you give to engaged couples?

Most decisions made while planning a wedding reflect things about the couple. Choose flavors that you love, or even flavors that your mother or grandmother made you as a child. Do not choose flavors based on what you think your guests might want to eat.

7. Tell us about your re-branding. What do you want people to know?

We are excited about our new brand. Timed to coincide with the opening of our retail location, our new brand will reflect our hand baked goods, fun approach and fresh feel. We hope that the community will enjoy our new presentation and continue to trust us to prepare the desserts that their family will enjoy at weddings, holidays and other family events.

Kaitlin & Matt Private FAmily Residence, Deadwood, South Dakota Photography by The photography shoppe

From the bride...

Atop a Mountain

Who would have thought a trip to South Dakota in the middle of a blizzard would lead to love? Matt and I met through his cousin who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I am from. With Matt being in South Dakota and myself in New Mexico, we relied on the Internet. Shortly after a few video chats and phone calls, I decided to fly to South Dakota for New Year’s Eve.

“After our first kiss in a bustling airport before a word was even spoken; the rest was a fairy tale! ^ Kaitlin

43 | DO ^

Our first kiss was at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport as I came down the escalator, literally before we even said a word to each other. Five months later--and after several flights across country--Matt got down on one knee in the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, and the rest is history! After we spent a great deal of time searching for the best venue, we decided on an intimate, backyard wedding. Matt’s aunt and uncle’s home is perched on a mountain in the Northern Black Hills. We knew this would be the perfect place to celebrate our vintage-rustic themed celebration.

Planning a wedding long distance proved to be challenging. Quite a few weekends were consumed with traveling to the Black Hills, meeting with vendors, and discussing ideas. Our core elements became mason jars and burlap. We didn’t start out with a main color combo in mind. Instead, we settled on mustard yellow after deciding to incorporate Billy Balls in our floral arrangements--that, and the fact that both Matt and I have fancy yellow diamonds in our rings. Matt and I, along with our families, spent many weekends working on the DIY projects. We made burlap napkin holders and added buttons from Matt’s grandmother’s button collection. We also wrapped wine bottles with burlap and painted numbers on them for each table. Name tags were made out of cardboard found from Hobby Lobby, and we spray painted them with chalkboard paint and wrote each guest’s name with their assigned table number. Wildflowers were handpicked from the area just two days before the wedding and placed into mason jars that hung from chairs that lined the aisles. One of my favorite wedding moments was hearing Matt sing during our ceremony while I walked down the aisle. It was very special, because during our engagement Matt would frequently serenade me with his voice and guitar. He told me he loved me for the first time through a song he wrote and recorded!

Downtown Des Moines

From the bride...

Dan and I are from the same hometown, but we didn’t meet until freshman year of college through mutual friends. Fast forward seven years, we decided to take the big jump into marriage and haven’t looked back since! I knew I was in trouble when I began finding projects and inspiration on wedding blogs and Pinterest before we even got engaged. Luckily, my crafty mother helped turned my vision into reality. First and foremost, we knew we wanted a smaller, more intimate gathering. With only 90 people, we were close with each guest. Our number-one goal was to make everyone feel welcomed and appreciated. Between welcome bags being filled with goodies for guests upon arrival of their hotel and Jimmy John’s catering at the end of the night, we know everyone had a wonderful evening! I decided on a color scheme of mostly blues, greens, bronzes, and burlap.

42 | DO ^

daintyobsessions.com | 3

A couple of favored elements were the seating chart and the guest book. My mom and I crafted the seating chart out of an old wooden frame we picked up at a craft store. We clipped our table listings to twine with mini clothes pins. Instead of the traditional guest book, Dan and I each picked a coffee table book we liked and had our guests leave their well wishes. We also made postcards and placed one at each seat. We asked our guests to give us their marriage advice and drop the cards in our homemade mailbox. It was so fun going through and reading everyone’s response. My absolute favorite element of dÊcor was the upside-down umbrellas! I hand selected each umbrella design, which gave the ending to our evening the perfect touch.

DO newsworthy Spark Letterpress by Jessica Weischedel

Throughout the process of planning a wedding, stationery is one thing that comes up as a continuous need. From save-thedates and invitations to programs and menus, the printing needs for such an event are unavoidable. Even after a wedding, the aftermath of thank you and holiday cards are always there to send out to your loved ones to show you care. When it comes to your wedding, the look and feel of the stationery you choose should stay consistent throughout the process. The details involved with designing your suite can be overwhelming. Fortunately, Spark Letterpress has a new storefront that can help you with your personal needs in designing that perfect piece for the occasion.

Letterpress is an old-world printing method that is used to print one-of-a-kind pieces, including all types of wedding stationery. It has a look you can see and feel, with deep impressions, custom ink options, and soft cotton papers that exude luxury and craftsmanship. Some say once you see what

This type of printing makes a lasting impression, and it is known to make recipients treasure the piece a little bit more as a keepsake. Husband and wife team Jim and Valerie Carlson are the owners and designers behind the “Letterpress Love. After designing their own wedding invitation, they realized they both had a passion and talent for the ability to create something original, using their quality printers, materials, and impressive design experience. Spark Letterpress has been in the Sioux Falls area for more than six years. In that time, the Carlsons have grown their business while designing and printing their stationery on genuine letterpress printers in the Spark Letterpress warehouse, sending their designs out to more than 110 retailers nationally and internationally. Their business has been recognized by a number of national and regional bridal magazines and blogs, including Martha Stewart Weddings, Inside Weddings, Style Me Pretty, and Brides Magazine. This exposure and recognition made the business realize how much it meant to them to not just sell their designs to brides who are located thousands of miles away, but to sell them to brides who can come into their storefront and meet their team while working one-on-one to achieve the wedding stationery of their dreams. Spark Letterpress recently opened their retail storefront, located in the Tri-State Creamery Building on Main Avenue in Sioux Falls. The storefront displays a variety of options for anyone’s stationery needs. There is also the option of using blind letterpress, where no ink is used on the paper, just an impression, creating a very classic and subtle look. Also available are custom ink colors, which are mixed to match a PMS number or a favorite fabric or paper swatch. When your order is placed, the design is created in the Spark Letterpress warehouse, using a restored original Heidelberg press and the intricate handiwork of the designers in-house. A design proof is issued within 2-5 business days for your review and approval. The design then goes into production, with the end result typically taking 15-18 business days.

summer’s inspiration

Summer & Ryan Terry Peak Chalets, Black Hills, South Dakota Photography by Jessica Simons Photography

Romance in the Chalets

From the bride...

Ryan and I went to high school together. We knew of each other, but didn’t hang out in the same crowd. Almost 10 years after high school, we ran into each other in our hometown. He asked me to go fishing and I told him I would think about it, but ended up going golfing with friends instead. Luckily Ryan was persistent and asked if he could make me dinner. I agreed. He came to my house and made shrimp tacos. I fell in love with tacos that night, and shortly thereafter I fell in love with him!

“Add personal touches. Your guests want to see elements that represent you as a couple. ^ Summer

We wanted an intimate wedding that doubled as a minivacation for our families and closest friends. Having the whole event outside was also important to us, and Terry Peak Chalets was the perfect venue because they had a beautiful outdoor pavilion. We were going for a rustic, yet modern and romantic vibe, but--most importantly--we tried to include personal touches and elements that are important to me and Ryan. We decided on serving shrimp tacos as our entrée because of our first date. Instead of bridesmaids and groomsmen, we had our siblings stand up for each of us.

daintyobsessions.com

| 69

Ryan’s sister-in-law spoke at the ceremony, which made it much more meaningful. The fireplace mantel in the pavilion was decorated with my late father’s snowshoes that he made from scratch. Our signature drink was my stepfather’s Bloody Mary. Our dance playlist was a compilation of our guests’ favorite dance songs that they requested via our RSVP cards. Our programs included bios about our family members and games with questions about the bride and groom. My mom helped with the large task of collecting mismatched china to use at every place setting. Our biggest inspiration for our wedding was to make sure that we expressed who we are as a couple, while making sure that our guests were laughing, dancing, and having a great time. 70 | DO ^

A Woodsy Motif From the bride...

Our favorite seasons are spring and fall, so we decided on a May wedding with fall colors. I have a love for the outdoors, so I knew that the wedding had to have an outdoor, natural quality. We wanted something more down to earth and casual--something out of the ordinary. The wedding gave me a chance to use my creativity, which had been put on the back burner since I graduated from college. I had a lot of fun designing the invitations, programs, and seed packet favors. I recruited my friends and family to help out with the details. It was definitely an adventure!

I didn’t want anything to be matchy-matchy, so all of our dresses were the same style, but different cuts, patterns, and colors. My mom made my sister’s dress and hand-crocheted my garter. My dad cut wood from fallen trees in his backyard for our hand-burned, initialed centerpieces. Vintage bottles were picked from antique shops along with birdhouses and birds from craft stores. I wanted everything to be local or handmade. We created paper pinwheels, directional signs, and banners. For our guest book, I wanted something interactive. We used an old vintage typewriter for guests to type out a personal message. I had preprinted and hand-trimmed cards that resembled old book pages and scrolls. I then used a paint pen on an old window to direct people on what they should do. Our natural-vintage theme, along with love birds and carved initials, were a repeated motif throughout the occasion. 78 | DO ^

Dainty

Styled Shoot

The Great Gatsby Washington Pavilion Mary W. Sommervold Hall, Sioux Falls, South Dakota Photography by Shalista Photography

86 | DO ^

The 1920s have long been remembered as the “Roaring Twenties”--an era where lavish parties were had, flappers smoked and danced, cocktails were mixed, and feathers and sequins dazzled. With the highly-anticipated blockbuster The Great Gatsby releasing in 2013, we channeled our inner theatrical and carefree spirit for a wedding-inspired styled shoot. We visualized a glitzy, glamorous affair in the Mary W. Sommervold Hall at the Washington Pavilion to compliment the grandness of the occasion. With its 1,800 seats, the Sommervold Great Hall is in the region’s premier cultural and entertainment district located in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

daintyobsessions.com

| 89

Hair and Makeup designers Jenna Ruby and Ashley Stoner of Vanessen’s Hair Design reinterpreted the 1920’s ladylike sophistication and handsome movie star glamour on our models, Kayla O’Connor and Blake Thompson. Vanessen’s styled a short bob of finger waves for Kayla and a slick side comb for Blake. Smitten with the era, Kayla wore an ivory tulle dress beautifully detailed with lace accents, floral embroidery, sheer, scalloped sleeves, and a charming asymmetrical hem from Ruche. Replicating the Art Deco movement with geometric shapes and strong colors, Bechtold’s Jewelers styled appropriately with long, pearl strands, scalloped bracelets, and a square-cut emerald ring.

90 | DO ^

Taking on the look of Mr. Gatsby himself, Blake was sharply dressed by Halberstadt’s Men’s Clothiers in a black Hugo Boss tuxedo and a Robert Talbott bowtie. Andrea Snaza, designer and owner of Confetti Creative Co., styled our Gatsby rendition, mixing modern and stunning while incorporating true facets of the time. She set our table with a standout gold-sequined runner, black chargers, and hints of the rich and deep tone, emerald green. Josephine’s Floral Design created lush bouquets of white roses, gold accents, and feathers arranged in vintage emerald green vases from Lost Marbles Antiques.

daintyobsessions.com

| 93

Known for her custom, handmade brooch bouquets, Josephine’s created a sparkly and meaningful keepsake with vintage brooches, pearls and feathers that matched our swanky motif. Hosting a “Roaring Twenties” themed celebration isn’t complete without music! Alternatively known as the “Jazz Age,” people took an interest in lively music, compelling people to get up and dance. Our present version included Avian Sunrise of Sioux Falls. Stepping in with their indie rock style, Avian created an upbeat atmosphere for our couple to dance and mingle the night away amongst cascading balloons and confetti.

niki’s inspiration

Niki & Jed Strawbale Winery, Renner, South Dakota Photography by Jeff Sampson Photography

Sophist icated Fusion in t he Vineyard From the bride...

I’ll start by saying that I’m not your typical bride. I hadn’t been envisioning my dress or planning the perfect day since I was 5. We got engaged in Greece and had almost a 24-hour travel day back home in which Jed had already started sketching his outfits, picking his groomsmen, and drafting the menu. I immediately started to feel overwhelmed!

“For our color scheme, I got ideas from my closet. I wear a lot of neutral colors and wanted our outfits and decor to fit in with the natural elements around us. ^ Niki

I knew my first task was to hire a wedding coordinator to help! I didn’t do much DIY because it was long distance planning and I simply didn’t have the time. Instead, I relied on Pinterest for inspiration and hired wonderful wedding professionals that got what we were going for. Jed, along with his family, is mostly from the East Coast and both of our friends are spread out across the country. However, both Jed and I love South Dakota and wanted the wedding here as an experience for our guests. This gave us the opportunity to share my home state with everyone. We wanted everything outdoors to bring in the country, while still keeping true to us with a little more sophistication. We created a lush, romantic setting among the vineyards of Strawbale Winery with a ceremony spot nestled in the trees, a casual cocktail hour with chickens and live music and a rustic, candlelit reception under a tent.

daintyobsessions.com

| 99

The most important aspect of planning for us was the ceremony. Jed is Jewish, and I’m Catholic. Since we were having a mixed denomination ceremony, we wanted to make sure that both of our faiths and families were represented well. There were a lot of elements that overlapped, but also a lot of really neat Jewish elements I had never seen before. After we smashed the glass and everyone yelled “Mazel Tov,” Jed and I led the recessional and went to have a “Yichud” (time of reflection) with just the two of us to take in the importance of what just took place. This was the only five minutes of alone time we had all day, and I’m glad we took that. Our ceremony ended up being so meaningful, unique, and special to us. Everyone there got to see something they hadn’t seen in a ceremony before and it really was absolutely perfect!

Alex & Blayne Hagen The Location: Italy (Rome, Venice and Malta)

Married: August 13th, 2011 Venue: Private Family Barn

For many, 12 days in the history and culture-rich country of Italia is the quintessential trip of a lifetime. “Italy struck me as the ideal honeymoon destination— candle lit dinners over delicious food, exploring the nooks and crannies of thousands of years of history, the language, the fashion and an authentic Venetian gondola ride with my new husband,” says honeymooner Blayne Hagen. Beginning their travels, Alex and Blayne spent three romantic days in Venice, getting lost among its many cafes, shops, museums and exploring the winding, narrow streets. “If you go, you will want to see the Plaza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal. Anything else you do is simply icing on the cake,” Blayne describes.

Photos: Courtesy of Blayne Hagen.

Happily getting lost amid the streets of Venice, Alex and Blayne stumbled upon, Ristorante da Raffaele along the canal near their hotel. While enjoying gnocchi and spaghetti carbonara by candlelight, they watched gondolas pass by and contemplated the striking architecture before them.

A train transported the couple to Rome where they spent four days hitting the many highlights the city has to offer: Trevi Fountain, the Spanish steps, the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and Vatican City, including the Sistine Chapel and the Borghese Gallery. Busy and modern, yet locked in time, this best describes the colorful and art filled city of Rome. Known as the “Eternal City,” Rome blends Greek culture with their own traditions. “Be sure to get the Roma Pass. It allows you to cut lines at major attractions and gives you free public transportation— completely worth it,” says Blayne. Ready for sun and relaxation, the newlyweds flew to the island country of Malta for their final four days. Here they spent most of their time on a chartered boat in the Mediterranean or lounging poolside at Hotel Ta Cenc on Gozo. The islands feature clear, azure waters and a strong touch of the exotic. Chameleon-like lizards, narrow streets, and architecture intertwine with a Middle-Eastern sensibility. “The last day of our honeymoon was spent in Valleta,” says Blayne. “Valleta is the biggest city in Malta and a charming closing chapter to our honeymoon.”

What’s your biggest advice to current planning brides?

It’s the only time in your life that people throw you a great, big party. Enjoy! Savor each moment. What makes your marriage successful?

We dated for five years before marriage. We started our marriage as really good friends. Then, when you make a promise to someone else, to love and cherish for life, you work through any hurdles. How do you deal with disagreements?

We discuss areas where we disagree. When you care for your spouse, you let the little stuff roll off and only get concerned about something you feel really passionately about. What was your support system like through Hodgkin’s disease?

The entire community became my support

system since I went public on television with my fight with cancer. People throughout KOTA Territory sent cards and letters and

prayers, and it helped very much! I was also surrounded by my loving family. The cancer diagnosis was very hard on my husband, and he worried he would be left alone to raise [our toddler]. What is it like being married and in the spotlight?

Well, my husband doesn’t care for the spotlight, so I have to be sensitive to his concerns. I, on the other hand, am glad to share almost anything. How do you keep your marriage “alive”?

It’s neat how our marriage has evolved. It was just the two of us for many years, then we shared the stage with little children. Now we’re at the stage where the kids are more independent. Their school activities are really our social life right now. Time is flying, and we’re both aware that it will be just the two of us again very soon. We like being with each other and try to find time for just the two of us. What is one of your favorite moments in your marriage?

The birth of each of our children has been a very special moment for us. What is marriage like once you have children?

We both have enjoyed growing our family, more than we ever dreamed. It’s been great! We really look forward to a family vacation with all of us together, away from jobs and friends. Top things any couple should absolutely know about each other before getting married: ^ We did a Catholic Engaged Encounter and it was very helpful. I would recommend that before marriage you discuss having children and the faith of the family. ^ Finances are very big! You must be very compatible when it comes to spending priorities.
