Friends! Autumn days (my absolute favorite) are here again and we are so excited to release another chapter in our lives with Volume 2 | Issue 1. This marks the SECOND year of Dainty Obsessions, and we can’t believe how fast the past year flew. We’ve quickly grown from concept to creation in no time. This is undoubtedly due to the vast amounts of Midwest professionals who have contributed their talent and time, the awe-inspiring quality of resources in the region, and the overwhelming support and loyalty of readers just like you. This issue is graced with so much beautiful imagery of love and creativity captured by some of the region’s best. We’ve got Real Weddings that range from sophisticated ranch soirees to a glamorous couple in a train station, to summer camp sweethearts. Our honeymoon expert, Tracy Kirby, takes us to the exotic destinations of the Dominican and the French Riviera. Our styled shoots this issue encountered some interesting incidents from hundreds of buffalo crashing the party of our Boho shoot to finally completing a beach-side styled shoot a few months in the making (our first attempt was devastated due to an ice storm in April…the joys of Midwest weather)! With this issue, we capture the pleasure and excitement of starting a new beginning while remembering the simple beauty of the place where it all began. We hope you enjoy our fall issue as much as we enjoyed creating it. XoXo,

ing pay for the wedding) have given me a ridiculously long guest list. How do I tactfully tell them we don’t want to invite all these people? A : This can be tricky, but try sitting
down with them and explaining that your venue capacity is limited and that each family needs to be given the same amount of invites for guests so that everyone is comfortable. Thank them for their financial commitment, but make sure they know where you stand. Q : A close friend, who is a
talented graphic designer, has volunteered to design my invites. She thinks her design is amazing, but I hate it. How do I let her know without hurting her feelings? A : Thank your friend for her talents
and let her know that you think her designs are great but that your vision for your big day is a little different. Be

sure to provide examples of what your vision is so she knows exactly what you’re thinking and to eliminate any guesswork. Q : Do I have to wear a white
or ivory wedding gown? Can I break tradition and wear what I want? A : Break tradition….adding color to
your dress or wearing a colored gown is totally acceptable nowadays. Most people will admire your bold fashion choice, but remember to keep it classy as it is still your wedding day! Q : My wedding party doesn’t
seem to know what they are supposed to be doing. How do I let my bridesmaids and personal attendants know what their roles and duties are without sounding like a bridezilla? A : A timeline or a cute card that
lists all the times and events with
addresses and phone numbers is a great way to keep people on track for the wedding weekend. Having something that people can physically look at will cut down on them asking you a million questions or not knowing what is expected of them. Be sure to send an electronic version to them as well because many people use smart phones and can pull up the timeline that way. Q : When should I send out
save the dates and invites? A : The general rule of thumb for save
the dates is at least six months in advance, especially if it’s a destination location or over a major holiday weekend. This gives people enough time to look into travel plans and get time off work. Invitations should be in the mail eight weeks prior to when you want RSVPs back.

Royal Limousine Celebrating 30 years of limousine service, Royal Limo’s professional chauffeurs add that elegant touch to your wedding day or special event. Offering red carpet service, complimentary champagne and a royal treatment experience that is unmatched, owner Steve Haddorff describes why they are experts in their field.
In 1983, a friend asked me if I wanted to start a limousine business, so we started a partnership and bought one limousine. After five years, he sold his share to another fellow and five years later that man sold his half to a lady. The last 15 years I have owned the corporation entirely and have grown from that one limousine to 20 limousines and buses. What sets you and your company apart? Royal Limousine has been providing luxury limousine service for 30 years. We have chauffeurs with 20 and 30 years of service. Our chauffeurs have extensive training for many different situations. They are trained as drivers, photographers, bartenders, counselors, auto technicians, concierge duties, “adult”sitting and tour directors. Every order is different, but we provide our red carpet service, soft drinks and water with each job. We pride ourselves on being able to customize
28
DO ^
each request for a customer’s specific event. We have also belonged to the National Limousine Association for 25 years, having to meet their excellence. What are some trends you are noticing? The current trends are for larger parties. Ten years ago people preferred the 10 passenger limousine. Now the limousine coaches are more popular with sizes from 14 to 30 passengers. Each group would like to take all their friends along so no one is left out. What advice would you give to engaged couples? For newly engaged couples, the best advice is to reserve your limousine as early as possible. We have reservations one to two years in advance. That will guarantee having the correct limousine and number of hours wanted for the special day.

DO get to know What services do you offer? We have provided our luxurious limousines for nearly every type of occasion; from weddings, birthdays and anniversaries to weekend road trips. We list 25 different types of occasions for what a limousine can be used for, and we are always open to new ideas. A popular trend now is wine tours to the local wineries. What are some features of your vehicles that wedding parties seem to love/want? We specialize in providing limousine coaches for the wedding day. The limousine coaches or buses have a limousine interior on a mini bus body. Our limo coaches are professionally built by nationally accredited limousine builders. The advantage to a limo coach is that the bride and bridesmaids can walk in standing up and select a seat rather than sliding down the long bench seat inside a shorter vehicle. We do have 6-14 passenger stretch cars and an SUV for those that prefer that style. What is the process for a bride and groom to work with you? A bride needs to determine how many bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers and friends they would like to ride in the limo on their wedding day. They need to determine how many hours they will need the vehicle and at what times throughout the day. The bride and groom can customize any plan for their day, such as: taking the ladies for their hair appointments in the morning, taking the fellows golfing, providing pre-wedding rides to the church for grandparents, aunt and uncles, out of town guests and the bridesmaids and groomsmen, scheduling their post- reception needs (most importantly), planning transportation for postreception needs for the bridal party and other guests who may not be able to drive.

Claire & Joe YMCA CAMP WARREN, EVELETH, MINNESOTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT LIEN PHOTOGRAPHY
From the bride...
32
DO ^
Our story starts at YMCA Camp Warren, where we both spent almost every summer of our childhood. Camp Warren is a single-gender camp, so we didn’t actually meet until we were both on staff. I had just finished my senior year of high school and was preparing to head off to college at American University in Washington, D.C. I was thrilled to find out that one of the male staff members had just finished his freshman year there and would be a sophomore in the fall. This, of course, was Joe! We spent the summer getting to know each other and the next eight years in love in the city we came to call home- D.C.
“Our wedding was very much a collaborative effort! My ladies and I made bunting, Joe’s brother-in-law made our amazing birch bark chuppah, our friends filled a canoe with beer, and my mother collected plates from garage sales during the year leading up to the wedding.” ^ Claire
43 | DO ^
From the moment we got engaged, we knew we would get married at Camp Warren. We have such strong connections to camp and the community that getting married there was the only option we explored. We wanted the camp spirit to shine throughout the wedding. We said our vows at one of our favorite spots on camp and set up a tent on the athletic field. I was truly in awe of the way everything looked that night; the decor, the light and the people who had traveled so far to be with us in our little corner of Minnesota invoked a feeling of pure bliss. We wanted our out-of-town guests to have a true Minnesota experience: everyone spent the weekend canoeing and sailing, we served only Grain Belt beer, we hired most of our vendors from the Iron Range area and my dad even had a chainsaw-carved bear made for the occasion.

From the bride...

DO ^
Aaron is an architect and I am an interior designer. We met on the first day of architecture studio. He carried my drawing board, and that was the first day of our forever. We both grew up in small town Nebraska and moved to Chicago to pursue our architecture careers. Even though we have now lived in Chicago for seven plus years, we knew we wanted to be married in the place we still call home, surrounded by our families.
daintyobsessions.com | 3
“I loved seeing both of our dads sit and tie the baker’s twine around the programs – it was definitely a full family affair!” ^ Lisa
We fell in love with an old 1920’s dairy barn for its architectural beauty and because of the fond memories we both have of playing on our grandparents’ farms. It was also important to us to bring a bit of that city glam that we love about Chicago, as well as our love of modern design into the details. Our biggest hurdle was planning a long-distance wedding, finding the vendors from out-of-state and finding time for all of the design that we wanted to incorporate. The DIY was our favorite part! Since we live out of state, we understand that quality family time is priceless. Two days before the wedding, our families got together for one huge craft day. The biggest operation was planting the succulent and moss box centerpieces.

DO ring 101 n
by Megan Brandsrud
Selecting an engagement ring is the first choice that ignites a host of wedding decisions to follow. Choosing an engagement ring should be a fun, memorable experience—not one that makes you feel overwhelmed and intimidated. With a little pre-shopping research and planning, you will be able to find an engagement ring that fits your lifestyle and budget.
k
The “Four Cs” of Diamonds When you begin shopping for rings, you will undoubtedly encounter the “Four Cs” of diamonds: clarity, color, carat and cut.
l
Know Your Metals Now that you know what to look for when selecting a diamond, it’s time to consider different metal options. Platinum and white gold are the two most popular metal choices when it comes to engagement rings. Platinum is a dense, extremely durable metal with a matte finish. White gold has a shinier finish, but it can take on a yellow tone after a while if you don’t take your ring in for regular cleanings. Platinum requires less maintenance, but a platinum band can cost at least $600 more than a similar band in white gold.
48
DO ^
Clarity: Clarity refers to the purity of the diamond. Some diamonds can be internally flawless with a minor blemish on the surface of the stone. Other stones can have inclusions, meaning flaws within the stone, which can range from very small to eye-visible. There is nothing wrong with a blemish or an inclusion in a diamond. In fact, they can help you identify your diamond. Color: Diamonds can range from completely colorless to light yellow. It is often believed that a colorless diamond is the most beautiful, but a near-white diamond is actually easier for our eyes to look at. Carat: A diamond’s weight is measured in carats. The larger the carat weight, the more rare and the more expensive a diamond is. Cut: Cut is the most important of the “Four Cs” because it is what really determines a diamond’s beauty. Cut refers to the proportions of a diamond. If a diamond is cut well, its angles refract light, providing ultimate brilliance.

A princess cut has been the most popular cut for engagement diamonds, but more and more often, people are choosing to custom-design their ring. Advanced technology allows people to easily design a ring that is totally unique to them. Whether you have an heirloom diamond that you want to use in your own modern style, or you want a design that combines several elements from different rings you like, most jewelry stores have in-house designers and jewelers to help you customize the perfect ring.
n
Ring Shopping 101 In addition to having an idea of what diamond shape or metal you like, it’s important to consider your lifestyle when selecting an engagement ring. Talk with a jeweler about what styles of rings would work best for your work environment or favorite hobbies. You do not want a ring that will not work with your daily routine. You would not buy a house without having it inspected, and the same should be true for your diamond. Diamonds weighing one carat or larger should come with a diamond-grading report from an independent association, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). You should also check to see what kind of warranties your jewelers offer. No matter what cut, carat or metal you choose, you must remember to take your ring in for regular cleanings and inspection every six months. Proper diamond care will ensure that your special ring will be shining for many anniversaries to come.

There is something so incredibly romantic about a pastel color palette. It’s soft, ethereal and pretty much perfect for an outdoor wedding, which makes this watercolor inspiration designed by Emily Hagen of RSVP Event Planning + Style along with floral by Meredith & Bridget’s and photography by Jeff Sampson Photography all the more relevant on the shore of Lake Alvin, SD.

Coupling the softest shades of watery peach and pink with calming and tranquil bursts of aqua and orange – all were placed against the calming tides of where water meets sand and lush rolling hills of the state park. Our stunning model bride was adorned in a custom Alan Evans gown and donned loose waves with a side braid created by Ashley Fischer of Belle Touche Salon & Spa. Our handsome model groom sported a casual and laid back ensemble from the always-so-sophisticated Banana Republic.

Heavily inspired by the delicate beauty of water color paintings, both Alyssa McDowell of Hyacinth Mine and Kari Popham of Sugar’s Baked Goods & Sweet Treats created simple, yet statement pieces of art. Alyssa, using her design talents, fashioned a stationery suite that complimented the soft expression of the shoot, while Kari molded a hand-dyed ombre confection worth gawking about. Flattering our color palette with a rustic beach temperament, stood our World Market table and Ideal Wedding Center chairs. These elements allowed the pastel table settings and gorgeous floral to really pop.

Alison & Ware PRIVATE RANCH, MORAN, WYOMING PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARRIE PATTERSON PHOTOGRAPHY
From the bride...
62
DO ^
Ware and I met in the summer of 2011 when we were set up by some friends on a blind date. While Ware was pretty interested right away, I really wasn’t. Fortunately we made plans for a second date, and when he walked into the restaurant the second time I was smitten! Love at second sight, I suppose. We were pretty inseparable from that point on and got engaged eight months later and married six months after that.
daintyobsessions.com | 3
We wanted to get married outdoors in a beautiful space surrounded by nature. Naturally, this lead to my godfather’s ranch in Moran, WY – just north of Jackson and not far from Yellowstone National Park. We wanted the décor to be something rustic and romantic, yet to allow the natural beauty to take precedence. Adding some personal touches was a must; the ring pillows were stitched by my mother and Ware’s best friend, who is an amazing artist, designed a “brand” for us incorporating our initials. We used it for all kinds of things from the welcome tote bags to the coasters and cocktail napkins. We named the tables after places that were special to us: our hometowns, where we went to college and the places we had traveled and lived together.
daintyobsessions.com
65
Our beloved yellow lab, Birdie, accompanied Ware down the alter. The cakes were really special to us. The wedding cake was a traditional tiered cake with handmade bluebonnets and dogwoods incorporated to represent each of us and our home states. The groom’s cake was a tribute to Ware’s marine adventures. He worked on boats for a few years and circumnavigated South America, including sailing to Antarctica. Monica designed representations of boats, surf boards and other things that have been meaningful to Ware through the years. She even surprised us with a ring in a treasure box, a reference to Ware’s proposal which took place out in the middle of the ocean while we were swimming in Barbados. It was the perfect weekend in every way, and we feel so lucky we were able to celebrate it with those we love in one of the most beautiful places in world! 66

I met Kent one summer night at a little cheesecake shop downtown. Our mutual friends fell into conversation, and so naturally we found our own topics. As we were leaving, the friend I came with turned to me and said, “Amanda, you’re going to marry that guy.” I laughed and didn’t think I would see him again, but a few weeks later he walked into the coffee shop I worked at….

We wanted bright colors and settled on mixes of yellows and other floral and citrus tones. Yes, the groomsmen were gracious and wore the coral pink ties proudly. It wasn’t until we saw a rustic barn on the outskirts of town that we feel like we “found the venue.” The rest of the decorations and country charm theme fell into place after that. Kent and I wanted our ceremony to be very meaningful, which is why we included a Finnish rug tradition as well as a foot washing ceremony. My family is a big lover of the arts, and so it was a treat to be able to make all sorts of projects and decorations. My mother and sisters helped to add some special touches with things like a piñata for the kids and fun signs on the way out to reception.

Laura’s inspiration
Laura & Tim PRIVATE FARM, ELK POINT, SOUTH DAKOTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY STUDIO BLU PHOTOGRAPHY
From the bride...
Tim and I met while starting my job at Rug & Relic. I was invited to a private afterhours evening of music at the gallery, where I saw him perform for the first time. Art and music have always been a huge part of our individual lives. Being together has brought an understanding and appreciation for each other’s passions, projects and interests. Tim and I have made some of our most treasured memories during simple evenings surrounded by the people we love; laughing, talking and listening to the music that friends create together. Most of the time, these memories took place in the backyards or living rooms of our friends. We chose to have the wedding at a friend’s farm as a way to pay homage to the simple pleasures that we hold so dear.

Our hope was that our wedding would invoke those same feelings of closeness and friendship that we have come to treasure with our friends and family. I didn’t spend any time at all looking at sites like Pinterest, in the hope that I wouldn’t get lost worrying about details. I found that leaving so many little things unplanned left room for friends to suggest ideas and to help execute tasks such as decorating. I wanted things to be simple so that people would feel like they could relax, feel at home and dance!

DO honeymoon destinations
Honeymoon Destinations
s Tropical by Tracy Kirby
With so many wedding details to check off your endless to-do list, strategizing the perfect honeymoon can sometimes take a backseat to dress fittings, tastings, venue visits, vow-writing, etc. But, fret not! We can help you find a location and tailor it to your every desire. Here, we feature two alluring destinations that will surely wipe away any wedding planning detail-induced stress and leave you and your spouse refreshed, relaxed, and maybe even a little sunkissed.
FRENCH RIVIERA
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The mere mention of the French Riviera summons notions of glamour, romance and idyllic fancy. And for good reason! The region, known as the Côte d’Azur, stretches down the southern French coastline all the way to the sovereign city-state of Monaco and boasts of dazzling towns and luscious beaches that melt into the flawless blue Mediterranean Sea.
Resting like a fine jewel in the Caribbean Sea, the Dominican Republic is a utopia for honeymooners seeking relaxation, tropical paradise, romance and culture. Colonial structures with cobblestone streets and whitewashed buildings provide a glimpse into the country’s fascinating past while its sandy beaches and diverse geography beckon you to serenity.
Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Pretty much since the beginning of honeymoons as we know it, the French Riviera has been a bull’seye for ring-wearing lovers. With beaches galore, intoxicating scenery, unforgettable restaurants and grand, scenic, celebrity-worthy towns such as Saint Tropez, Cannes, Nice, Antibes, and the fairy-tale village of Eze; there is not much left to be wanted for romance-seeking newlyweds.
Why Honeymooners Flock Here: With no shortage of pristine beaches, all-inclusive resorts, opportunities for exploration and the thrill of leaving the United States without the pain of traveling too far, the Dominican Republic attracts honeymooners like a moth to a flame. Romance abounds in its secluded, tranquil coastline and accommodations while those seeking a more active, adventurous experience can discover the bustling nightlife, water sports and more.
What to Do: Take a train up and down the coast exploring the coast and its renowned cities, bask in the endless lazy sun, people watch from a beachside cafe, dine at gourmet French restaurants, and take countless photos as this is a vacation you definitely want to brag about when you get home!
Where to Go/Stay: Kristina Wolfe, branch manager at Travel Leaders Sioux Falls and also an expert in Dominican Republic travel,
recommends staying at her favorite resort: Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana. This adults only, all-inclusive resort has unlimited luxuries. From delicious gourmet restaurants, a world-class spa, white sandy beaches to 24-hour room service, this is your one-stop shop for all things honeymoon. What to Do: The beauty of traveling to the Dominican Republic is you can either do everything (swim, snorkel, dive, dance, boat, explore, hike, tour, etc.) or you can do nothing at all (sit by the pool or beach sipping on a pina colada or snuggle up in your room and order ungodly amounts of room service). This magical island has it all!
Where to Go/Stay: With countless alluring options for accommodations, we tracked down Mary Jo Nelson at Travel Partners Sioux Falls for her French
Riviera expertise. “I highly suggest staying in Monte Carlo at the Le Meridien Beach Plaza,” Mary Jo said. “The hotel is in walking distance to many attractions, has a private beach (the only one in Monte Carlo) and the area has a great night life with casinos and more; perfect for honeymooners!”

Kaylee + John Koch The honeymoon: Paradise Valley and Big Sky, Montana MARRIED: JULY 20, 2012
Photos: Courtesy of Kaylee Koch.
Montana offers honeymoon options for every couple and budget with luxury lodging to rustic camping and everything in between. From breathtaking mountains to natural hot springs to charming little towns, Big Sky, MT offers natural beauty that’s perfect for the outdoor enthusiast: Adventurous, relaxing and romantic. Beginning their four-day adventure, Kaylee and John headed to Pray Mountain in Paradise Valley eager to take in the beautiful rolling hills in the heart of Yellowstone River. “We relaxed in the hot springs of our resort, Chico Hot Springs, which was exactly what we needed after a long drive,” Kaylee described. With Montana offering an abundance of outdoor excursions- from white water rafting to fishing to hiking to horseback riding to boating, just to name a few. Starting off day two of their adventure, Kaylee and John hired a guide who taught them how to flyfish. “We spent five hours floating down a breathtaking scenery of mountains along the river. We caught almost 15 fish-- trout, whitefish and a cut-throat. This was the best day! It was something we had never done before. It was both relaxing and exhilarating,” Kaylee said.

Day three, the honeymooners drove into Big Sky where they stayed in their “Cowboy Cabin” at the Moonlight Basin Resort situated at the very peak of the mountains. “The cabin and resort were perfect! We were secluded and the scenery was majestic. The resort offered a fivestar restaurant, amazing wildlife where we saw moose and bears in the wild and a relaxing pool and spa,” Kaylee described. One evening Kaylee and John went into Big Sky Village where they enjoyed great local food and beer. “Big Sky itself is just the coolest village with the hippest bars, shops and restaurants. There was a live music festival one night, which was one of our favorite nights! The music was great mountain music, the people were so friendly and you could bring in your own drinks! We grabbed some beer and wine from the local market and laid on the blanket enjoying the tunes,” Kaylee recounted.

DO happily married
Bruce & Elizabeth Hagen How did the two of you meet?
Elizabeth managed a clothing store in Sioux Center, IA. Bruce used the excuse of wanting to purchase a dress for his mom for Mother’s Day after he saw her picture in the paper announcing the opening of her store.
FEB 24, 1979 AMERICAN REFORMED CHURCH, ORANGE CITY, IA 34 YEARS OF MARRIAGE
Their top 3 things any couple should absolutely know about each other before getting married:
• Faith and how it’s important in their daily life.
• How each person’s parents handle financial matters and how that relates to how they handle their own money.
• Be perfectly honest with your fiancé about your past so there are no surprises later in the marriage.
They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it?
We thought our first year was fun. We started dating in May, got engaged in September and married the following February. We each felt we married our best friend and had so much fun together. We also had our first child 13 months into our marriage. What is the most memorable wedding moment?
For Bruce: Having all his friends and family there.
For Elizabeth: Walking down the hall with my precious dad who was so proud of me. He was beaming! What is the craziest wedding moment?
Elizabeth’s grandpa couldn’t understand why we wanted to leave on a honeymoon and not spend the weekend with all the family that came to the wedding. What’s your biggest advice to current planning couples?
Please get fantastic marriage counseling before the wedding. Talk about family issues that you both bring into the marriage, expectations, faith, finances, etc. Talk about how each of you handle conflicts and your plan for when problems arise in the marriage. Talk to couples who have been married 120
DO ^
a long time and ask for their best advice. Realize that you are making a lifetime commitment and are really ready for this. Marriage is not 50/50. It is 100/100. If each person in the marriage puts God first and then one another first, an amazing marriage will result! What makes your marriage successful?
Our faith that God brought us together and this is His plan. When things get tough (and they have) we know divorce is not an option and we know we are each committed to each other. Forgiveness is an integral part of our marriage. How do you deal with disagreements?
Even after all these years, this is a work in progress. However, we know when we communicate quickly about what is on our mind that’s when we can handle things much easier. It’s when we don’t communicate in a timely manner that issues become bigger problems. How did having children affect your marriage?
We had four children in the first five years of our marriage, so those years are a bit of a blur! But, our children brought so much joy that we had our fifth child seven years later. With children you do have less time for your spouse, which is why it’s imperative to have date night once a week to stay connected. With kids, your social life changes as it revolves around the children - church, sports, school activities, etc. We both feel having children enhanced our life and now with our first grandchild, Addilynn, the joys keeps coming.
