It’s a new year, and we couldn’t be happier with the direction we’re headed. We’re elated to kick off the spring issue with refreshing ideas and new beginnings. As we head into 2013, we can’t help but look back and reflect on the past. 2012 was a whirlwind for Dainty Obsessions. From conception to reality and everything in between (“everything” being an understatement), we’ve been in “go, go, go” mode from day one. Taking a moment to reflect is a must. It’s the perfect time to build on what we’ve already created and also the perfect time to learn from our missteps. 2012 was amazing to us. It’s still surreal to see DO on the shelves of Barnes & Noble, next to Martha Stewart Weddings. We’ve been humbled by the experience, the support, the successes, and are even more charged to continue raising the bar of what “quality” means. We are thrilled to debut Volume 1 | Issue 3 of Dainty Obsessions! We’ve once again found some of the region’s best real weddings, and coordinated remarkable styled shoots. With each issue we find ourselves confirming what we’ve always known: We have extremely talented, kind, artistic, intelligent, and aweinspiring individuals in the Midwest! The best man is super-shy and is really dreading giving the toast. Can he just skip it?
One of the honors of being the “best man” is to toast the bride and groom. So even though he is shy, he cannot skip the toast. You might suggest to the best man that he practices his speech (or you may even help him write it). Who isn’t afraid of talking in front of strangers? He will be proud of himself when the guests applaud and lift a glass of happiness to toast the bride and groom.
Do photo, video and band staff get a table?
It would be appropriate to invite your photographer, videographer, and band members to participate in dinner. If they are attending to their work at dinner time, have your caterer or wedding planner prepare a plate for them before or after.
My groom and I hate to dance. Can we avoid the first dance altogether?
Developing self-confidence and a “love” to dance through lessons might just be the answer for a couple who do not like to dance. Usually when two people have confidence in what they are doing...dancing together could be one of their most memorable and romantic moments of the evening.

You are in charge of your guest list. However, invite your family...or you will be dealing with hurt feeling for a long time to come. Inviting your aunts, uncles and first cousins is a really good way to begin your married life.

Car Cans Brides who like to keep with old wedding traditions should think about tying tin cans to the back of their newlywed car. This dates back to the ancient tradition of making loud noise to frighten away evil spirits. Whether you believe or not, this DIY project is easy and adorable.
You will need 5-7 tin cans; multiple sizes Can opener Scrapbook paper Scissors Paper cutter Marker/pens Jute Hole puncher Double-sided tape
How to create Step 1- Pick out cans, remove contents, and rinse. Step 2- Measure and cut scrapbook paper to fit cans.

Step 3- Decorate scrapbook paper (i.e. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just Married,â&#x20AC;? your wedding date, hearts, special sayings, etc.). Step 4- Apply decorated scrapbook paper to cans with double stick tape. Step 5- Punch two holes on the top of each can; one on each side. Step 6- String jute about six to 12 inches long through the two holes in cans. Each can should be varying lengths. Step 7- Bunch all the jute together at top and tie a knot. Step 8- Attach to the back side of your getaway vehicle.

What is 2013’s hot color combo? Mint green, soft pink, and gold! With so many different shades of pink and green, it’s easy to come up with the right hues and combinations to create your own unique wedding color scheme. Event coordinator and stylist Sadie Gardner of Sadie’s Couture Floral & Events swept us to the North Dakota Museum of Art in Grand Forks, N.D. Dreaming of spring and all things whimsical, sophisticated, and elegant, she merged modern and clean lines of the museum with soft and feminine details. Sadie designed a playful setting full of delicate charm, sweet ice cream treats, and eye-catching colors.

Our stunning model, Lindsay Arneson Corwin, was pampered by the talented Emily Newcomb of Adae Salon. Creating a big, classic updo, Emily incorporated a modern touch with a soft braid up the back side. She artistically applied a flawless coverage of airbrushed makeup and dramatic lashes to our model, accentuating her porcelain skin and head-turning looks. Completely decadent in a Jovani Couture full-length gown from Tres Chic Bridal, Lindsay was a dream in this striking ensemble. The sparkling jewel-encrusted bodice with a square neckline and demure cap sleeves transitions into a flourish of delicate layered ruffles. Adorning the dress with bold Steve Madden heels, they added the perfect pop of color.

With this particular styled shoot, we dreamed up something magical for our flower girls. Bringing in little ballerina dancers whose pink tights, tutus, and flats created a fanciful entourage for our bride. Sadie styled our head table to reflect the perfect mix of our color palette. Accenting it with candlelight, she added mint linens and a gold, beaded, appliquĂŠd overlay. Gold chargers were formally placed with vintage plates, and she incorporated a slight masculine touch with wooden and gold silverware. An over-the-top floral arrangement centered the table, overflowing with sprays of white and pink roses. Each guest place setting adorned a simple stem rose to create that elegant and romantic touch.

Lindsay (our model and also owner and designer of Lindsay Arneson Creative) fashioned custom invitations, menus, place cards, and all things stationery. No element was overlooked--the very intricate details of die-cut corners, calligraphy font, and stunning embossed envelopes all coordinated with the soft, yet glam aesthetic of the shoot. Taking in the location of the modern art museum, Sadie created a bold circular backdrop for the sweet ice cream bar and dessert table by cutting large circles and stringing them with fishing wire to hold steady as a modern focal point. Keeping things clean and simple, Sarah Horak of Sarahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sweet Boutique frosted a three-tiered mint cake accented with cascading flowers which took center stage on the dessert bar. 1. How did you start your business?
2. What sets you and your work apart?
I think the thing that sets me apart the most, according to my clients, is my personality. I found I had a talent for developing a rapport with women to make them feel comfortable in their lingerie in front of a camera. Women tell me I make them feel like a model on their wedding day, grooms tell me they actually had fun during the photo session, and parents tell me I move through the family portraits with finesse and a “no hassle” approach. I’m a pretty easy-going person.

I started photographing weddings, which introduced me to brides...who happened to be looking for gift ideas for their husbands-to-be. My first request for a boudoir photo shoot was from a woman whose husband was serving in the military overseas. She wanted to surprise him with sultry images. Unsure of what I was doing, and without a studio, I invited her to come to my home. I purchased lights for her shoot and created a unique space. The session went well and piqued my interest to continue exploring the boudoir side of photography. I decided to go to a workshop as well as have my own personal session to fully understand what I was stepping into. The results of both my images from the workshop and my personal images were beyond words. Today my studio boasts a 2,000 square foot space in downtown
Fargo, N.D. with over a dozen different sets for our clients. I recently purchased a three-story Victorian home in downtown Moorhead, Minn. where a natural light, Paris-chic space will be created. This studio will have four different rooms complete with King Louis furniture and elegance beyond words.

DO get to know 3. What is the process for a bride and groom to work with you?
For weddings, I like to personally meet with my clients. I don’t e-mail pricing information unless I’ve first visited with the client personally. At the very least, I like to visit over the phone to discuss what they are looking for. I value my relationships and I think getting to know each other is important before booking. For boudoir clients, I do all bookings over the phone or in person at events. I explain my process and alleviate any concerns they have and answer questions about their shoot. A boudoir photo shoot is a very daunting idea for many women. They’ve likely never done anything like it and they don’t know what to expect. I explain that they don’t need to be a model. They don’t need to pose, I will do that for them and I will even coax the expressions I need for the shoot. They just show up and I take care of the rest. Retainers are required for all bookings.
4. What are some trends you are noticing?
For boudoir, vintage pin-up is the rage now, and I find it quite fun to plan and photograph a pin-up session. For classic boudoir, I get a lot of requests for shadowed shots or close-ups of body parts such as the lips, cleavage, backside, legs, and heels. 5. What advice would you give to prospective boudoir clients?
I do boudoir photography to help women see themselves differently. It is for all women no matter their age, size, ethnic background, etc. My mission is to change women’s perceptions of what is alluring. We women need reassurance that we are created beautiful.

Sugar and Spice…
Adam and I got engaged after dating for six months. When you know, you know. I was so excited to be Mrs. Terwin that there was no reason to wait long. I knew we could put together a wedding in six months, so we set our date for late summer. Planning is my forte, so I knew the months leading up to the wedding would be exciting.

“I didn’t know about the horse and carriage that brought Lacey and her dad to the ceremony. Seeing her step out was my favorite part of the day!” ^ Adam

We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding with a modern, rustic touch. It wasn’t until I tried on my dream wedding gown that details started falling into place. Carine’s Bridal Atelier tied a satin taupe sash around my soft, ivory gown, and it was that moment that my colors were decided: taupe, ivories, whites, and burlap. Creating a romantic space under a tent with lots of lighting, candles, drapes, and lush flowers were next on the list. Sadie’s Couture Floral & Event Styling came in, knew exactly what I was envisioning, and made it happen from the wine barrel cocktail tables to the hanging candles above the head table.

Everyone knows me to have a huge sweet tooth, so I felt everyone would be expecting a large dessert selection at our wedding. My mother was in charge of the candy bar portion. I also asked my mom, mother-in law, aunts, and bridesmaids to contribute a homemade sweet. We labeled them with chalkboard signs: cupcakes, cake, cookies and milk, bars, mini pies, and tons of candy. Everyone raved about it! If only I had more time that evening to indulge in all the goodness! Our entire day was perfectâ&#x20AC;Śflaws and all. For example, the 250 giant sparklers and initial stamped match boxes we bought? Whoops, forgot to use them! No matter what happens, enjoy the day and be happy, and your friends and family will be too!

From the bride...
Retro Rendezvous
Jason and I went to kindergarten together in Mitchell, S.D. Not sure if we were friends, but he did have a crush on a friend of mine. He eventually went to a different school, and then moved to Arizona. Fast forward to about three years ago--we reconnected on Facebook while he was living in California and I was in Sioux Falls. He was planning on moving back to Mitchell. Once he arrived, we decided to meet up and hang out one night, and we’ve been together ever since. With both of us loving all things vintage, we decided to have our wedding ceremony and reception on my parents’ farm southwest of where I grew up. Our ceremony was under a tree in a field behind the farm, and our reception was in the hayloft of the barn. The whole wedding was a DIY project in itself.

It required a lot of planning, which was overwhelming at times and a ton of work, but everything turned out magical--exactly how we envisioned it. My mother and I planned the whole wedding and created pretty much everything with the help of my father and brothers. The barn had previously been used for storage, so it had to be completely cleaned out--a new floor installed in the hayloft, as well as new stairs and railings. A few of my favorite projects included turning an antique cupola from my grandparentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; barn into a chandelier, creating a bar in the hayloft, wooden signs for directing people, fabric garlands, hand-carved, stamped favor bags, old doors to create an altar, and I guess the list of favorites could go on. One of the main things we hoped for was that all of our loved ones would have an absolute blast, and I am pretty sure we accomplished that!

Berries – Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, boysenberries, and blackberries all pack an antioxidant punch. They are high in vitamin C and E, which keep your skin looking fresh, smooth, and hydrated. The beauty of these delicious eats is that the brighter they are, the more nutrients they pack. Asparagus – A good source of antioxidants vitamin A and C. These stalks are plentiful in the spring, and can be enjoyed in multiple ways: raw, grilled, steamed, roasted, or sautéed in soups, salads, and mixed dishes. Color Me Mine
We met unexpectedly at a surprise “party-bus” birthday of a mutual friend. We both came with different groups of people, but ultimately met when skipping out on one of the bar stops. It wasn’t until I offered him a swig of brandy that either of us got the courage to talk to each other. It was our first date at Sebastian Joe’s and then a walk to the lake that set things off. The way to my heart is ice-cream... How did he know?! Luke and I have varying tastes that range from vintage-retro to contemporary-chic. We were hoping to embrace colors, textures, patterns, and details that were special to us and would make everything as personalized as possible.

The first item we purchased to influence our design decisions were Luke’s Blue Suede Creepers (shoes). Coincidentally, Benjamin Moore Paints sells a paint color called Blue Suede Shoes that matched perfectly. We ordered a few swatches of that offset with a lighter vintage green color called Tropical Paradise. Feeling like we needed something more than color for inspiration, we started looking at patterns. We chose some contemporary patterns like chevron and mixed them with some more mid-century modern (repeated circles,etc.) and used only black and white to maintain a classic 50’s graphic. Finally, we wanted to tie everything to our location. We had two starkly different locations in mind. First, the ceremony and pre-reception festivities were held at my folks’ house in their backyard, and the reception (or as we called it, the “Wedding Celebration”) was held at The Ritz Theater.

Luke edited together a compilation of black and white films to provide a backdrop on the stage instead of using decorations, and I raided my dad’s collection of antique books and collected pieces of milk glass as extra touches. Instead of spending money on flowers that risked the possibility of being thrown away at the end of the night, we looked for ways to entertain our guests through use of centerpieces. We decided that it would be a mix of some farmer’s market flowers with milk glass compotes of raspberry candies, and our favorite element was turning games into interactive centerpieces. We didn’t want to risk the chance of anyone getting bored since we weren’t putting on a traditional wedding dance. We wanted our reception to feel like an experience, and encourage our guests to enjoy it the way we did.

Pretty in the Pasture
Flashback: December 20, 2011. Matt and I are taking a leisurely stroll with our three chocolate labs on my birthday. Walking in rural Wyoming on a ranch first owned by Matt’s grandparents, just at the perfect spot, Matt asks me what I thought about getting married “right here?” Our imaginations immediately started running wild (after I said, “Yes,” of course!). After nine short months, the planning was complete, and in the middle of a hay field at the same spot he hit his knee in December, Matt and I sealed our vows. With blue skies and sunshine smiling down, we kissed under a handmade wedding arch of Quaking Aspen that my father and brother “threw together” the day before.

Growing up on a ranch, it was important to me to honor the cowgirl inside. Not only was the setting perfect with guests taking in our wedding perched on muslin-wrapped hay bales, sights of the Big Horn Mountains in the distance, a horse pasture surrounding, but my boots were also an impeccable choice. When planning the floral presentation, we wanted a feeling of a rich summer garden, with English roses, ranunculus, and lilies. It was the flawless blend of country chic mixed with a summery garden vibrancy. With the stress of wanting everything to go perfectly, and to acknowledge our familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision of our day, a good friend reminded us to focus on our marriage, not just on the wedding. There is a monumental difference in those two things. I was blessed with finding my soul mate and best friend, and on that day those words stuck in the back of my head. Jake and I met via mutual friends while in high school. After a pretty harsh falling out, our friendship underwent a long process of redemption. The Lord eventually led us to spend an entire year in prayer before our engagement. We both thank God for giving us that time to grow in our identities as believers prior to starting our life together as husband and wife.

I always knew I wanted to be married outside on my parents’ acreage. We decided to host the entirety of the day’s events in that one location--the ceremony outdoors and the reception in the large machinery shed. I wanted to add to the “down-home” theme by using things we had on hand for decorating: wooden porch railing down the aisle, vintage jars filled with my great-grandmother’s button collection, old dressers with homegrown white alsum flowing out of the drawers. It was all about the details! We found most everything else at thrift stores: lace curtains and tablecloths to decorate our chuppah, a chandelier, pastel-colored bed sheets for fabric streamers, lamp shades of various sizes to hang from the trees. Other things just fell into place perfectly, such as our getaway car, a friend’s vintage Ford Model A with rumble seats, and my aunt surprised us with the typewriter guest book. One of our favorite things from the evening was live music at the reception. My great aunt played the keyboard, and a family friend entertained us on her saxophone. We truly found joy and peace in celebrating with our family, friends, and each other.

Imagine a sun-dappled day outdoors. Driving through the northern hills of California from San Francisco to “Wine Country,” overlooking rolling acres of grapes bursting with flavor, and toasting your good fortune with your new love—this is what honeymooners Shauna and Travis Hamilton envisioned for their romantic getaway. Staying their first three nights in Sonoma County at the Sonoma Coast Villa and Spa, the couple enjoyed delicious homemade breakfast every morning prepared by Chef Johannes. “Our honeymoon suite was secluded and very romantic! We visited in the late months of August and the nights got pretty chilly, but the staff prepared a fire for us every night,” Shauna explains.

While in Sonoma County, the newlyweds visited several wineries including Kendall Jackson and Iron Horse. Although they spent most of their time enjoying cool leisurely days of wine, cheese, and dessert tastings, they also spent an afternoon visiting their adventurous side by zip-lining through the Redwood Forest.

Spending the second half of their trip in the diverse and thriving city of San Francisco, Shauna and Travis spent time exploring Fisherman’s Wharf, tiny shops, and the abundance of food options. “There were a lot of food vendors around the Wharf that served Clam Chowder and Dungeness crab. They all had really amazing food!” With so many different sightseeing opportunities, the couple took a city bus tour that offered unlimited onand-off access to 26 different places, including: the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, Union Square, and Hayes Valley Park. “We decided to walk from Hayes [Valley] Park to the Full House house--Shauna’s favorite show. It was about a two-mile walk each way, but if you are a Full House lover, it’s worth it,” Travis says.
“Must” List: • If you want to tour Alcatraz island, get your tickets at least a month in advance. • Bring a jacket! It gets cool at night in late August. • Do a wine and food pairing tasting at a winery. • Find vineyards that are in the same area and plan out a route.

Meet lovebirds Nancy and Shannon Brown. Nancy, a morning anchor for KSFY News in Sioux Falls, S.D., found love when she least expected it. With challenges such as opposite schedules and finding one another at 40, this refreshingly candid and strong-willed couple tells all on their five year marriage.
Nancy: It was my birthday and I was working nights at KSFY at the time, so the crew and I went out to celebrate. I ran into some friends who were hugging me…Shannon came over and said, ‘If you are giving out hugs, I want to get in on that.’ I looked at him strangely and he said, ‘No, you don’t know me, but I know who you are.’ I thought he was really cute, but trouble. Two months later he convinced me to go on our first date. Five months later, engaged. Six months later, married. They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like, and what got you through it?
Nancy: It was hard. I got married at 40, so I had been independent a long time. Getting used to living with someone is always an adjustment. Add in step-children, and it was lifechanging. It’s also been the biggest blessing. I’m so happy to have Parker and Phoebe in my life. Plus, Shannon and I added three dachshunds to our house. The third and fourth year have been the most difficult, partly because of my work schedule. I get up around 2:15 a.m., so I’m always tired and miss out on a lot of family time because I should be in bed at 7 p.m. I don’t see much of Shannon during the week, and that’s hard on a relationship. What is your most memorable wedding moment?
Nancy: I picked Sunday, June 15th

because in 2008 that was Father’s Day. My dad died in 2000, and I wanted to honor the man I loved most in the world. My best friend Jenny Danke
and her husband Greg went with us to Jamaica, and during our four-person reception on a pier we toasted dad, tears flowing. We celebrated our marriage and friendship, and we will never forget that moment. What was your craziest wedding moment?
Nancy: For me, it was when the minister called me a spinster. Since I’d never been married, that’s what they call ladies like me in their country. We all got a good laugh at that. What’s your biggest advice to current planning couples?
Nancy: Have a destination wedding. Shannon and I spent a total of one hour ‘planning’ it with the wedding consultant two days before the wedding. It was great. There was absolutely no stress. What makes your marriage successful?
I think ‘success’ is a hard term to define. Marriage is hard, especially when two stubborn strong-willed individuals unite. I think you have to consider it a work in progress and always try to put the other person first. How do you deal with disagreements?
Nancy: We definitely need to work on this. We both are low on patience and have tempers. We like to blame the other when something goes wrong. We are working at being better. Shannon: I think it is important to pick your battles and let the little things go. The things that are really important to you, you should be insistent on.
At the same time, when you know something is important to your partner, then you should recognize and honor it. What is it like having a significant other in the spotlight? Shannon: At first it was hard to deal with. It didn’t matter where we went people would stop, stare, point, and whisper. I have to admit, I was in awe myself that my girlfriend was a local celebrity, so I understood why. We even ran into a couple in Jamaica on our honeymoon that recognized her. After time I came to view her not as a celebrity anymore, but rather a person like everyone else. Then I found it funny how people reacted. How do children change a marriage?
Nancy: Shannon has two kids. I think the hardest thing is getting used to dealing with an ex-spouse and vastly different styles of parenting and organization. I think anyone that is a step-parent will tell you it’s hard, but rewarding. Top things any couple should absolutely know about each other before getting married?
Nancy: That’s tough for me since there was so much I didn’t know getting into this. It was a whirlwind from the time we got engaged to the time we got married. I think sometimes you just have to follow your heart and work like hell to keep the lines of communication open and stay together. Marriage is not for the faint of heart, but Shannon makes me laugh every day and we love our dogs and the kids, so I consider myself lucky to have a happy family.
