Rustic, elegant and stunning are words that have long been associated with Dainty Obsessions. Now add modernrock, mountain chic and deliciously inspiring into the mix and you get a sense of the breathtaking real weddings and styled shoots being produced in this issue. With summer finally in full swing, this issue of DO focuses on the region’s most covetable outdoor affairs and the most sought after wedding professionals who had a hand in them. As we happily close the chapter on winter (and our cold spring), a few of us may have realized the extra pounds and dry skin that it’s left behind. With wedding season right around the corner, we spoke with Vivaz Medical Spa and FORM Fitness Studio + Boutique to reveal the ultimate beauty and workout regimes to help kick-start your best you before the big day. Also in this issue is yet another quarter filled with wedding love--passionate souls who dedicate their lives to weddings, talent that makes us jump for joy, inspiration that pushes the norm, honeymoon destinations out of the movies and catering trends that span the world. Thanks again for grabbing an issue of DO. We adore you, and hope you adore our summer issue.

Happy Planning!

Etiquette Sadie Gardner

A : Ideally, you would write a thank you

the day you receive the gift; however, for a wedding you have a grace period of up to three months after the wedding date. Thank you notes should all be handwritten on stationery and personally addressed. Anyone that has given you a gift, your attendants, anyone that assisted you the day of/weekend of your wedding and your parents should all receive thank you’s. Special attention should be paid to anyone that traveled to be with you for your wedding--not only did they have transportation expenses, but likely lodging, meal and entertainment expenses. Q : One of my best friends got engaged just days after I did. We’ve set a wedding date and theme, and now my friend wants to have hers just a month after mine with similar décor. I can’t help but be annoyed. Am I out of line? A : Rather than being annoyed, maybe

consider that your friend admires your style and appreciates your insights about décor. Again, her wedding is after yours,

so although she wants something similar, mutual friends will have attended your wedding before attending hers. The one thing you both could do is talk about your ideas and perhaps work together to find ways to share themes/colors while designing things so that each wedding has its own touch. Q : We’ve hired a professional photographer for our wedding. Can I ask my guests to refrain from taking pictures and posting to social media? A : Yes, you can always ask. You can also

include something in the invitation and ceremony program. You can also ask the person performing the ceremony to mention it as well. It is all in how you word it. All that said, people will have their cell phones with them, and unfortunately you may still have some guests that take photographs and post them. Q : My good friend is having a destination wedding and reception in Jamaica. However, she’s also hosting a “small” wedding and reception back home. I feel obligated to attend both (and I know she’s expecting that), but I

feel this is asking a lot of her guests and close friends. Can I pick one to attend? Or, not attend the destination? A : Anyone planning a destination wedding in which they are not providing the transportation/lodging for their guests, needs to understand the financial commitment that is required by any of their invited guests to attend their wedding. They should understand that a destination wedding may be costprohibitive to some of their guests and as such, understand if someone cannot attend. Q : My engagement is just four months long. Should I still send out save-thedates? A : Save-the-dates are not required

for weddings. They serve more of an opportunity for couples to invite people to mark their calendars with advance notice of the date of their wedding. Specifically, you may want to notify close family and friends of your wedding date, but actual save-the-dates are not necessary unless you want to send them.

^ 22

Q : What’s a good time frame for sending out “thank you” cards to our guests?

BEAUTIFUL BAR CART Whether you’re throwing a bachelorette bash or hosting a girl’s night in before your big day - a pretty cart stocked with bar essentials allows guests to help themselves and makes hostessing a breeze. Follow these simple tips for a perfectly styled cart:

Refreshments You know your friends best: stock up on favorites, whether it’s wine, liquor or lemonade. Include a variety of sodas for mixing and some non-alcoholic options. Look online for fruit-infused waters as well as colorful limeade recipes. Tools Cocktail shaker, corkscrew, bottle opener, drink stirrers, jigger, strainer and ice bucket. Depending on the liquors included on your cart (and the bartending skills of your guests), you should be just fine with the basics. Glassware Wine glasses, highball glasses, martini glasses and short collins glasses are essentials for any bar cart. This is the perfect excuse to pull out cute glassware that just doesn’t get used enough stored away in the cupboard. Paperware Cocktail napkins are the easiest way to compliment your theme or color palette. Little touches like paper straws and cocktail picks are always crowd pleasers. A banner or hand-made bunting makes any evening a party. Don’t forget the garnishes! Guests can get creative with an assortment of sliced fruit. Better yet, make garnish kabobs to go with the cocktails you are serving. If martinis are your thing, don’t forget to include a variety of stuffed olives!

With the newly-crowned Pantone Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid, all the rave right now, the creative duo behind StyleEsque, Emily Gegner and Samantha Peterson, along with photographer, Aly Carroll and florist, Shelly Sarver, came together to produce an inspirational sweetheart set. Radiant and glam with a hint of rustic woodland vibes, this styled shoot incorporated simple concepts and easy DIY projects that any bride can duplicate. Doing away with the obvious orchid flower, Sarver selected an array of floral in various shades of purple, along with a curated collection of gold antiques to complement the vibrant colors.

The delicate details carried over to The Bake Shoppe, who deliciously dressed the antique bar cart with petit fours and a mini naked cake. To top the shoot off, model Regan Katje gorgeously wore a low-back, lace Allure gown adorned with a woodsy and feminine flower crown.

DJ Jer

You’ve been planning this day for what seems like forever. You have every detail and element in place, your vows have been said, tearful speeches are over, your bellies are full and now you’re ready to party on the dance floor with wedding entertainment director and Masters of Ceremony, DJ Jer.

Tell us about DJ Jer Event Lighting + Design and where the concept and passion began?

I was the kid in school who was always getting in trouble because I was the class clown. I loved entertaining people and making them laugh. Apparently my teachers didn’t agree with me. I always loved music and have an appreciation for all genres. When I was 15 years old I went to a middle school dance and completely fell in love with the idea of entertaining people through music. I love watching people enjoying themselves and dancing, so I saved up all my money over the summer and created what we are today. When I was young and naïve I had to have a “cool DJ name,” and since everyone called me Jer back then I thought that was the coolest thing ever. Now I can’t rebrand because we have built such a reputation as DJ Jer, so I am stuck with the name. What services do you offer?

We specialize in top-scale wedding

receptions. When it comes to a wedding, we make it about so 36

DO ^

much more than just a dance. It is a celebration where your guests will be a part of an experience from the moment they walk through the doors. As the Master of Ceremonies, our job is to make sure guests stay informed, announcements are made and the night stays on schedule. But, most importantly, we provide peace of mind for the couple. We offer creative ideas and lighting design that have been recognized across the nation. We have audio visual components for our couples as well as assistance with ceremony sound and more. When we listen to our client’s needs, we can create large and small productions specific to them. We also offer education and private consultations to brides, grooms and their families to create the best wedding reception ever. What sort of things should couples take into consideration when booking their entertainment?

Instead of price shopping, you should be talent shopping. Remember, you get what you pay for. The next biggest thing a couple should take

into consideration is whether the DJ really cares about the couple and if they mesh well. Every couple should make sure they set up a meeting with their potential DJ, because the DJ is the make or break for a successful wedding celebration. If the DJ doesn’t care to meet face to face to ensure they are good fits for each other, then the DJ isn’t going to truly care about their wedding day. If a couple and a DJ do not mesh, they are guaranteed failure. Find a DJ that has proven themselves and continues ongoing education to improve their craft. What sets DJ Jer apart from other entertainment options in the region?

The passion and hard work I put into weddings will show. I truly care about the success of my couples’ celebrations. When I am in front of all your guests, they will know that what I am doing on your behalf is completely real and not a routine. I, “Jeremy Brech,” have achieved the certification of a Wedding Entertainment Director® being 1 of 24 in the world who have been accepted into the vigorous application process. I

have also been asked to sit as one of six board of directors for some of the best entertainers in the nation. I travel the country speaking at large conventions educating hundreds of DJ’s around the world on how they can make amazing results for their wedding couples. We have been awarded: “The Best of the Knot,” “Wedding Wire Couples Choice Award,” “The Local Best Event DJ and Event Entertainment” and write for national publications across the country. The biggest thing that separates us are the “results.” Tell us more about being nationally recognized by the international wedding industry organization, The WED Guild®. The WED Guild was established

by fellow Wedding Entertainment Director® and author of The Best Wedding Reception… Ever!, Peter Merry. The WED Guild® is an elite group of highly trained professionals who are committed to delivering the best quality music (whether they be a band or a DJ) and Master of Ceremonies services for their clients. Every WED Guild® member has earned their place by going through a rigorous application process verifying the caliber of services they are currently providing. It is about exceeding

expectations for their couples and their guests. What trends are you noticing for the upcoming 2014 season?

In 2014 you will see lighting design becoming more creative, and our events becoming more production based. Brides and grooms in this day in age are seeing the importance of their entertainment and are focusing more on quality entertainment to create amazing celebrations. What can couples and guests expect to experience when choosing DJ Jer?

From the first meeting, you will know we truly care. When working with DJ Jer, couples and guests will experience a wedding celebration they will remember for a lifetime. Our team will help you discover your theme (yes, you have one), while creating personalization and detail with a level of service you wouldn’t expect in the Midwest. All the pre-planning we do with our couples allows us to always be in the moment to create opportunities of happiness, laughter and tears. We can truly provide an experience, so when your guests leave after that last song they know they were a part of

something truly special. When should couples begin looking into entertainment services for their wedding?

Depending on how much of a priority the success of their reception is. People who know what they want will change their date to get great entertainment and not settle. If entertainment is your biggest priority it should be booked right away. We get bookings over two years in advance, but don’t rush into a decision until you have had a one-on-one meeting with your potential DJ. Don’t ever feel pressured into your decision. Just like marrying the love of your life, when you know, you know! 3 Fun Facts About DJ Jer

• I have three amazing young girls and a very understanding wife who puts up with my overly crazy schedule. • My most over-the-top wedding I ever did was a full-out Alice in Wonderland wedding that received a lot of national publicity. • I am still a class clown who loves to entertain and watch people have an amazing time.

FAITH & KEVIN S N O W Y M O U N TA I N LO D G E , C E N T E N N I A L , W YO M I N G P H O T O G R A P H Y B Y E LY B R O T H E R S

From the bride ... Kevin and I met at a Thanksgiving gathering hosted by his sister in Wyoming. He was the only person at the entire party that I had not met. With Kevin being a lover of all things outdoors and mountainous, along with his rugged appearance, full beard and flannel, he caught my eye. Through some scheming with friends and his sister Stacy, we set up a group blind date two days after the holiday, where Kevin was the only one unaware of the setup. One week from that Thanksgiving night we were officially dating. Nine months later, Kevin and I took a trip to Grand Teton National Park where Kevin proposed in the mountains.

Kevin is from San Antonio and I from Michigan, but we wanted our guests to see the beauty of Wyoming and understand why we chose to live here. Mountains and hiking are very important to both of us, so naturally we decided to be married in the snowy mountain range. We wanted our wedding saturated in details that told mine and Kevin’s story, as well as give our guests a glimpse of the state. Our meal was Paleo driven with Wyoming flare, serving only fresh vibrant salads, fruit and grass-fed Bison. Details and design for our day was rugged-elegance with hints of inspiration from Fantastic Mr. Fox. We have a great love for foxes and all Wes Anderson films, so it was quite easy to incorporate in our wedding. DIY details could be found everywhere: Our cake topper of his and her fox was made by my wonderful and dear friend Diane, gold-glitzed apples with place names, star thistle honey wedding favors, handmade forest animal masks for our entrance to the reception, homemade lavender earl grey truffles, berry cheesecakes, and sugar glitzed champagne glass were all made to reflect our style and taste. Although all of the details and styling of the day were very important to Kevin and I, the ceremony was the highlight and reason for the entire day. A very close friend and elder of our church married us. We chose to share our vows to each other privately, and to this day it is one of our most cherished moments.

MEGAN & CASEY T H E G I B B S M U S E U M , S T. PA U L , M I N N E S OTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEG COOPER PHOTOGRAPHY

From the bride ... For Casey and I, it was somewhat love at first sight (well, it was for Casey). We met for the very first time at a gathering of mutual friends. After that night Casey was hooked, confessing his deep admiration for me to a close friend. Unfortunately, at the time I wasn’t single. It wasn’t until a year later that we reunited once again at a party. Casey made many attempts throughout the night, showing me his record collection, looking painfully cool playing the role of the wallflower at the party, and finally (despite his distaste for the musician), played a Frank Sinatra record and asked me to dance. As they say, the rest was history.

“One of my favorite memories of wedding planning with Casey was spending countless hours relaxing on our porch in the summertime, drinking beer and putting together our wedding playlists. ^ Megan

Being a little wedding crazed, I had spent quite a bit of time online (prior to our engagement) obsessing and drooling over the DIY style and barn weddings on many different wedding sites. Casey and I both knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, something casual with lots of personal touches--a slightly classy backyard/barn wedding with a retro feel, if you will. We wanted our wedding to be very “us.” Being that I wore my grandma’s dress from 1960, we definitely wanted to incorporate that time period by adding vintage detail. This included my vintage Schwinn bike with basket which held the wedding programs, songs from female doo-wop groups from the 50’s and 60’s playing as guests arrived, tables adorned with yellow gingham tablecloths and doilies sewn by my great grandma, and all of the flowers in vintage soda cans and mason jars.

Another extremely important feature of our wedding was the music. My husband and I asked my youngest brother if he would like to take on the role of our DJ/Master of Ceremonies and we hand-selected each song played throughout the night. We wanted to play songs that were meaningful to us as well as our closest family and friends. This is one of my favorite memories of wedding planning with my now husband, spending countless hours relaxing on our porch in the summertime, drinking beer and putting together our wedding playlists. Even though our wedding day happened to fall on one of the coldest (and rainiest) days ever recorded in Saint Paul in late July, it truly couldn’t have been a more perfect day.

NATASHA & SHOMIT N O R T H OA K S G O L F C L U B , N O R T H OA K S , M I N N E S OTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY

From the photographer ... Natasha and Shomit are a perfectly complimentary couple. Natasha was straight forward and knew aspects of her wedding day instantly, while Shomit was soft spoken and went with the flow. At other times, Shomit would have a seamless idea about vendor selections and Natasha would be uncertain of elements, like the color of her dress. The way they interacted with each other was a flawless match; always in compliment of each other, balanced. With both coming from jobs in New York, they planned their big day from afar, relying on help from Natasha’s family and Simply Elegant Bridal Consulting, both based in Minnesota. Planning a destination wedding is tough work to say the least, but to coordinate a traditional Indian wedding spanning multiple days when the couple lives on the East Coast, the groom’s family in London and the bride’s family having strong opinions on what Natasha wanted, created an especially beautiful challenge.

Natasha and Shomit wanted only the best for their guests that were coming from all over the world--225 guests from India, London, California, Tokyo and countless other places were all going to receive 5-star treatment from the couple. Natasha and Shomit had a beautifully decorated Mandap, traditional Indian cuisine, and even Shomit riding in on a white horse. Music was a huge element that they wanted to incorporate into their wedding, since Shomit’s father is a famous musician in London. They flew in a band from Chicago, performed different ceremonial dances and enjoyed getting married for two gorgeous days.

MEGAN & WADE P R I VAT E B A C K YA R D R E S I D E N C E , S I O U X FA L L S , S O U T H D A KO TA PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE PHOTOGRAPHY SHOPPE

From the bride ... When Wade and I were hunting for a new home, we never imagined we would find this hidden beauty in the middle of Sioux Falls. From the moment we laid eyes on the outdoor space, we knew it was the spot where we would be married. We wanted a small, intimate affair with the people nearest to our hearts. By selecting the backyard, we opened up every possibility we could dream of for an intimate, serene venue. With our romantic theme, we wanted to transform the area into a whimsical escape amongst the trees. As guests arrived to our home, they were led through an arch of lit branches and along a rock pathway with romantic signs hanging in the trees.

“We ended our magical day sharing wine around the fire and enjoying a s’more bar with the closest of friends.” ^ Megan

The stone pergola sits in the middle of the yard, just steps above the rock patio, providing the perfect ceremony space. Framed by sheer drapes, hydrangeas and roses, we said our “I do’s.” Meredith and Bridget’s Flower Shop provided us with the most romantic floral arrangements. They executed our vision beyond our expectations. Having a smaller wedding allowed us to really focus on the details and “go big,” as smaller arrangements would have been lost in such a large space. At our reception, every table featured different custom-made centerpieces, linens and chair covers handmade by my mother, Jane. There were countless hours spent at night cutting fabric with my bridesmaid, and many more hours at the sewing machine.

Our “backyard” wedding consisted of a full open bar, tray-passed hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour and a served dinner. Guests were entertained by the awesome photo booth provided by the Photography Shoppe. Holly Fredrickson from Take the Cake created an artful vanilla bean cake with fresh strawberry filling. We can’t wait to eat it again on our first anniversary! Throughout dinner, the white lights began to twinkle along with the hundreds of candles. The mood began to shift with the setting sun and our evening evolved into a nighttime celebration. Lounge seating around the fireplaces allowed for relaxed conversation amongst guests. We ended our magical day sharing wine around the fire and enjoying a s’more bar with the closest of friends.

“Take a moment the morning of the wedding to have some quiet time, whether it’s prayer or meditation. It helps to bring balance to your busy day.”

“Although we had thee most amazing photographer, I wish I would have hired a cinematographer as well. The wedding day goes by so quickly and having a video would have been another beautiful way to relive our wedding day.”

“The day goes so fast. You don’t remember tasting your food, what was said in the toasts or if you got a chance to breathe! I would recommend to slow down and give yourself a chance to take everything in.”

“If you want a $500 bridesmaid dress, plan to pay for a portion of it. The last thing you want is to stress out the people that are supposed to be de-stressing you!”

Our rockin’ couple rode in style in a vintage Jaguar Convertible, with a furry English Bulldog companion in tow. Sugar’s Baked Goods and Sweet Treats blew everyone away with guitar pick cookies and a black and white cake suitable for music royalty. With a last-minute stop downtown, this modern affair kept it classy all while mixing in lighthearted elements that even included mini bottles of Jack Daniels for our carefree couple.

I obviously love designing weddings. I find the little details to be the most memorable and endearing, so I spent a lot of time designing and producing the stationery, signage and other decor for our wedding. Notable wedding projects include our hand-cut window decal, sculptural paper ceremony backdrop, programs, confetti bags and a hand-painted head table backdrop. In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, we served vanilla almond and chocolate cupcakes and a small banana fudge cutting cake. My dad is a chemistry teacher and Rich’s mom makes the world’s best chocolate chip cookies, so as a late-night snack we served little bags of cookies with test tube shots of milk.

DO honeymoon destinations

Honeymoon Destinations

s by Tracy Kirby

Even before the sheer madness that is 21st Century wedding planning, newlyweds have been sealing the deal on their new love by venturing out on secluded, romantic vacations for hundreds of years. Here, with the help of our favorite travel advisors, we take a lesson from the historic couples that have gone before you and help you line up a once-in-a-lifetime lover’s holiday. So, get ready to go incommunicado, unwind and turn your focus solely on your one and only in one of these dreamy locales.

KAUAI, HAWAII

GRENADA

In the middle of seemingly nowhere in the Pacific Ocean emerges the magical “Garden Isle” of Kauai. The oldest of the Hawaiian Islands and arguably the closest to the original Hawaiian experience, Kauai is a jawdropping enchanting oasis that truly sets itself apart. Tropical rainforests, Waimea Canyon, world-renowned beaches, waterfalls and majestic cliffs all grace the island in unsurpassed natural beauty that leaves you with only one problem: Will you ever want to return from your honeymoon?

Grenada may not be so synonymous with honeymoons as Hawaii or Mexico may be, but rest assured; this largely unfound honeymoon destination came to play. This island in the Caribbean Ocean is said to be the Caribbean experience as, unlike some of the neighboring isles, the natural beauty and friendly population has not been overcome and tainted by commercialization. Therefore, the island is left in natural, pristine condition and a prime environment to foster a trip that fantasies are made of.

Where to Stay: Luxury travel specialist Kristina Wolfe at Travel Leaders Sioux Falls recommends hanging your hat at the St. Regis Princeville Resort located on the north side of the island. Overlooking the picturesque Hanalei Bay, the St. Regis is sure to be a stay neither of you will soon forget. Kristina also suggests the Grand Hyatt Kauai located on the southern

tip of the island near the beach town of Poipu. Here you can enjoy a traditional Luau, swim in the 1.3 acre saltwater lagoon and pamper yourself until you can’t be pampered anymore at the sprawling spa. What to Do: After your first mai tai and relaxing day in the sun, the intoxicating island may beckon you to venture out to explore. “Adventure is everywhere,” Kristina said. “Helicopter rides through the Waimea Canyon, backcountry tubing tours, Nui Loa Zipline trek, Wildlife Refuge Kayak, and Hidden Valley Falls Hike (a picnic tour).” Or, leave your adventure seeker self back on the mainland and simply steep yourself in wedded bliss and the bewitching breeze and warmth of the Garden Isle.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Mary Jo Nelson, owner at Travel Partners Sioux Falls, says she has had several couples recently visit Grenada. “All of them come back with nothing but rave reviews,” she said. “And one of my clients said the best word to describe the island is just completely ‘unspoiled.’” Where to Stay: Without hesitation, Mary Jo advises honeymooners who are willing to splurge to absolutely book their stay at the luxurious Sandals LaSource Grenada AllInclusive Resort and Spa. Opened in December

2013, this brand new lovers paradise is, according to Mary Jo, “the most amazing resort you’ll ever see.” What to Do: Perfectly named the “Spice Isle” for its large growth of spices, you will find no shortage of tranquility or adventure (or both) to spice up your blissful recess in Grenada. Mountains, rivers, waterfalls, postcard-like beaches and romantic resorts afford you the ability to hike, bike, scuba dive, snorkel, explore, take enviable selfies and so much more. Assume reading this article is Grenada calling to you from afar … Answer the call!

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Hawaii has long been a honeymoon destination all-star, but somehow Kauai has maintained its secluded charm and unadulterated beauty. Some parts of the island are still only accessible by boat or by plane; leaving much for the imagination and adding to the pure romantic mystery of the island. Thus, it is no wonder it is a popular honeymoon destination as it is pure and simply paradise.

honeymoon diaries

Whitney + Brice Anderson

The honeymoon: 10 days in San Ignacio & San Pedro, Belize

These days honeymooners want to do more than bask on a beach somewhere—they are after a-once-in-a-lifetime trip filled with both relaxation and adventure. This is exactly what newlyweds Whitney and Brice were in pursuit of— a romantic destination complete with lush jungles, Mayan ruins and quiet beaches. This search led them just beyond Mexico to the country of Belize. Long considered a hidden gem, Belize is becoming a hot spot for tourism. “Belize combined adventure and relaxation. We were able to experience great excursions and relax on a beach. It’s known as one of the untouched places in the Caribbean with forests and beautiful shores, so you can get the best of both worlds,” Whitney recounted. Dividing their 10-day adventure between San Ignacio and San Pedro the couple experienced four nights in a secluded rainforest and then six nights on the coast of Matachica. “In Gaia, we took a horseback ride in a rainforest! The views were unbelievable and our guide had so much knowledge about the history of Belize. But, it was in Matachica that we experienced our favorite excursion. We went to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and saw incredible marine life—10-12 ft. sea turtles, sting rays, small sharks, beautiful schools of fish and, of course, the barrier reef. After snorkeling, our guide took us through ‘Shark Ray Alley’ where we got off the boat and swam with sharks!” Whitney exclaimed. “Brice got to touch a shark— it was a crazy experience! I was too scared.” Although tourism has increased in Belize within the past few years, it’s still widely considered unspoiled territory with hospitality being top-notch. From the moment you arrive, Belize people will make you feel welcomed

DO happily married Stacy + Jake Sells SEPTEMBER 13, 1997 KING OF KINGS LUTHERAN CHURCH, OMAHA, NE

How did the two of you meet?

through breast cancer?

and ended up exchanging numbers that night. He called when he got home and we talked until the early morning hours. We discovered we had so much in common, including our birth dates. The following weekend we went on our first date. Through some ups and downs the first couple of years, we both knew we were soul mates and meant to be together.

couldn’t have asked for anything better under the circumstances. Jake was my rock; he took wonderful care of me and was extremely protective of me. He has always been a very “hands-on” dad. While I was sick, he was basically a “single” dad for quite a while and never thought twice about taking care of everything. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it?

How do you keep your marriage “alive”?

We met at a mutual friend’s house

Learning that we can’t change each

other, and instead need to change ourselves. Changing our behavior is important, as well as changing negative attitudes. Bad attitudes result in bad feelings and actions. Top 3 things any couple should absolutely know about each other before getting married?

1. Money: Who will pay bills, save, spend and allocate? Will you follow a budget? How much to save? What is a necessity and what is a luxury? How are debts or assets brought into the marriage viewed? 2. Kids: Do you both want them? Do you agree on when, parenting style, disciplining and staying home vs. working? 3. Career: Will you both work, will it be okay for one of you not to work under certain circumstances? Are you willing to move if a career opportunity becomes available in another location?

What is your most memorable wedding moment?

Watching our families become one. A

and spending time together when the kids go to bed. We also make a point to go on a long vacation at least once a year or weekend trips without the kids. What is one of your favorite moments in your marriage?

Spending time together and with our extended family. We enjoy watching our family grow and succeed. What is marriage like once having children?

What’s your biggest advice to current planning couples?

What sort of traditions do you follow as a couple?

What makes your marriage successful, and how do you deal with disagreements?

as possible is eat dinner together. We also go to church together on Sundays and try to follow a few family rules: Always tell the truth, be happy, polite, be respectful, smile, listen to others, speak kindness and be happy with what you have.

Focus on you and the important things that you both want for your wedding/ marriage. Do what makes you both happy, not everyone else.

Putting God above everything,

memorable moment was watching Jake dance with his great grandmother. We have the cutest picture of them--one of her stockings was up and the other was down around her ankle but, seeing her smile at Jake, she didn’t care!

our faith is what makes us successful. Learning to resist holding grudges, bringing up the past and remembering that we are married to an imperfect person that makes mistakes.

For us, it brought us closer together as a couple. Definitely challenging at times, but we think we’re a pretty good team. Especially during these teenage years!

What’s the secret to a happy and life lasting love?

Putting God in the center of your

marriage. Be grateful for all that you have... you don’t know if you’ll have tomorrow. And, take care of each other through sickness and health.
