There is nothing quite like winter in the Midwest. Interpret that how you want. Call me crazy (or 10 years old), but I love blizzards and snow days. To me, winter is all about celebrating the holidays, happily hibernating during the short days, taking that extra minute for reflection, contemplation, recharging, refocusing, planning, planning and more planning—all with a cold cocktail in hand and fuzzy slippers on my feet, of course. I find there’s no coincidence that this magical time of year happens to be when the greatest amount of engagements take place. The season seems to bring out the love in people. With this issue, we introduce to you a couple of new editorials that we are especially delighted about. First up: Dainty Living. Beyond having a styled-to-perfection wedding comes having your home (and everything in it) feel curated and styled to perfection as well. Q : Should I do a seating plan or not? I don’t want to, but my partner and his family do. I just don’t see the need. A : Having a seating plan is nice for wed-

dings that are more formal and have a lot of guests from different areas of your lives (i.e. work friends, college roommates, high school friends, distant family etc.) as it allows you to group people together that might not know very many other guests and seat them with others they are familiar with. However, it has definitely been a growing trend to have an open seating plan (which is okay), but maybe as a compromise to your partner and his family have a few reserved tables for immediate family and special guests that feel more comfortable sitting with people they know. Q : Is it classy or trashy to invite different guests to different parts of our wedding day? For example: Just the dinner and dance, or just the dance? A : I’m not a huge fan of inviting guests

to different parts of the wedding as it can make people feel slighted and resentful like they are not “good enough” to be invited to the whole thing. However, if you are very, very clear that your venue can only seat so many people for dinner so due to the large size of your family there isn’t space, but you’d like to open up the dance

Q : One of my best friends asked me to be a bridesmaid and stand up with her, however I don’t really support their decision to marry. I want to support my friend, but I don’t think they make a great couple. Should I say anything, or just support my friend and her decision?

A : The invitation was obviously a kind

A : It’s always an honor when you’re asked

Who knows, maybe that relationship will grow into friendship in the future! Q : What’s an appropriate dollar amount to spend on a wedding gift? A : This can be tricky as everyone

attending a wedding is on different financial levels. It’s usually a good rule of thumb to consider how well you know the couple, your own finances, and if you’re going to be spending a lot of money on travel and lodging to get to their wedding. Another thing to consider is whether or not you’ve been invited to showers and/or engagement parties where you have gifted them previously. At the end of the day you have to feel comfortable with what you are spending and, in my opinion, a nice card

to be in the bridal party, and the true role of being a part of your friend’s day is to support her and her decision. But before you put your relationship in jeopardy, think about why you really don’t support her decision to marry this person. Is her partner abusive in any way or do they have a lifestyle that is truly bringing her down? Or do you just dislike his political views and taste in music? How deep-rooted is this dislike on your end? Part of the beauty of being adults is that we all get to make our own decisions based on how we feel, and if your friend wants to marry that person, all you can do is love and support her. But keep in mind that you also have to be true to how you feel. If you think it will cause more strife to hear about every detail and help with her day, then sit her down and have an honest conversation with her. Hopefully she will respect your decision.

While producing a larger quantity of hand-stamped items, the best advice is to begin your project early. Stamping important items such as invitations where consistency is key, make sure to practice and have extra card stock on hand.

Engage Paperie Say ‘hello’ to co-managers Diedre and Alana of Engage Paperie—Sioux Falls, South Dakota’s premier stationery boutique. These two ladies are single-handedly bringing trendy, forward design, custom printing, workshops and so much more to the heart of downtown. The duo offers a carefully selected assortment of cards, paper, planners, pens, gifts and designer lines like Kate Spade and Rifle Paper Co. We dare you to leave their shop empty-handed.

When did you open Engage Paperie?

We opened our doors December 2013.

How did you discover your passion for paper and print? We are owned by Spark Letterpress,

a company that creates beautiful letterpress stationery. It’s safe to say that we are paper and print enthusiasts! The both of us work closely with Spark on a daily basis, assisting clients with their stationery orders and working with Spark’s inhouse designers to craft really unique pieces. It’s an amazing process, and one that we offer to clients locally.

Tell us about Engage Paperie. How did you build your brand?

What sets you apart from other stationery and paper companies?

The name Engage Paperie describes our love to engage one another through paper. Whether you are looking for the perfect birthday card or inviting guests to a party, we have what you need to capture the moment.

What keeps your customers hooked?

Our curated collection of fine paper keeps customers coming back. As for our custom stationery business, we rely on referrals. Clients who create custom pieces with us once come back for other occasions because they know what to expect, and it’s a lot of fun.

We also love Rifle Paper Co., Hammerpress, and Knot & Bow for wrapping and crafting projects. What can your customers and potential wedding couples expect to see and experience when choosing to work with you?

Clients can expect quality service and tons of creativity. The first consultation is a bit longer as we absorb the wedding details, colors and inspiration and work up a design idea that fits their style. We often discuss all of the wedding papers from savethe-dates to invites, as well as the day-of pieces. We want clients to leave educated, knowing that their stationery can be completely tailored for them and that they aren’t stuck with what they see. You work with wedding designers, event planners and brides every day. What’s the best part of helping craft a wedding?

We are fortunate to experience the entire ride of the planning process. From save-the-dates to the place cards on the dinner table, we bring their vision to life on paper. The invite is really our favorite part of the process because it helps set the tone of the entire event. If the invite is amazing, just imagine what the wedding will be like!

• We can make anything paper related for you: programs, guest book prints, stationery for a holiday gift. Dream it up and don’t be afraid to ask. • The majority of product in our store is made by small companies with big dreams to create art for others to enjoy. One company prints their cards in a barn in Missouri. • We like to pretend we’re Meg Ryan in the movie You’ve Got Mail.

Why is sending out custom stationery an important aspect of an event or a wedding? What does a wedding invitation say about the event?

A wedding is an event like no other, so it’s important to do it right. For many couples, it’s the first time they will purchase custom stationery. The wedding invitation design signals a formal, semi-formal or casual event. Invites also provide a lot of information to your guests, so it’s essential to communicate details well. Lastly, the invitation design need not be complicated. A simple, classic invite with wording in script can be just as impactful as a heavily designed invite.

What trends are you seeing for 2015?

Foil is crazy right now! Mixing foil with an organic look gives the bride the best of both worlds. What’s one thing every designer must-have on their desk?

A pencil and eraser. Sketching ideas is a fun part of the process with clients. Talk it through and give them an idea of the design madness/genius in your head.

What do you do when you’re not engulfed with all things paper and print? What’s family life like?

Diedre – I have two amazing boys that keep my husband and I very busy. We often cook together, garden and go on long walks with our adorable miniature schnauzer. Alana – I just bought my first house, so I’ve been having far too much fun making that a home for myself. Who knew I’d enjoy mowing the lawn and picking out shingle colors?! I spend as much time as possible with my friends and family and love throwing dinner parties for them. For fun, I like to relax on my deck with a yummy cocktail or spend the night in my craft room…I’m never too far away from the paper world.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

You can find inspiration anywhere. We recently crafted a field of red poppies for our store. The poppies later provided inspiration for a fantastic bridal shower invite. You just need a little spark to get your creative juices flowing. What’s the best part of running Engage Paperie?

Engage Paperie is a labor of love. We spend a lot of time looking for the right products that reflect the best trends. Honestly, opening a new shipment of cards is like Christmas!

From the bride ... Alex and I met at the tender age of 13 and spent the better part of our years together in high school growing as friends. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until the second half of our senior year that we started dating, knowing well that we were going away to different colleges. We spent four years traveling the 150 miles back and forth, visiting each other, meeting new people, and learning new things. Though the distance was misery at times, he and I came away as stronger people and a stronger couple. Then, after more than six years together, Alex proposed.

I had an idea in my head of what I wanted our wedding to feel like: natural, warm, intimate and above all, joyful. Alex and I knew instantly when we found Camrose Hill Farm that that’s where we would get married. I couldn’t believe it was real. The charm, beauty and serenity of the place were almost too good to be true. We loved it, and we knew our friends and family would, too. Weddings are one of the most personal events in life, so as we planned, we kept in mind how each detail would uniquely reflect us as a couple. I think we were able to achieve this by combining a handful of personal projects with contributions and guidance from the experts. Though planning can be a bear (trust me, it isn’t for everyone), I was pleasantly surprised by how many incredible, wonderful people we would meet in the process. Alex and I are still so grateful for the time, talent, love and effort that helped make our day so memorable. We hoped everything would come together to create a beautiful setting, but more importantly, Alex and I wanted our guests to celebrate with us. How better to do this than with good food, drinks, conversation and dancing? Ultimately, it is the people—friends, family, loved ones—who made our wedding such a happy occasion. I can only hope our guests had as good of a time as we did.

From the bride ... Shay and I met at work. He asked me to lunch via IM for over a month until I finally said, ‘yes.’ Our friendship quickly grew into an effortless and positive relationship. It was apparent we wouldn’t be our best without each other. Married at Stonehaven Barn, Iowa, this great outdoor space with character was exactly what Shay and I wanted. We hosted the ceremony and reception at the same location, which gave the entire day a very easy-going vibe, just like us. The ceremony was held in a small outdoor courtyard, while dinner was set up inside the barn. We lucked out having a mild July day where guests were able to comfortably enjoy dessert and dancing inside or opt to chat and relax outside on picnic tables. To be honest, I wasn’t that bride who was crazy about all the planning and details. Frankly, I just wanted to be married. However, when we opted to have a wedding, we knew we wanted something that was a true representation of who we are, rather than something cookie cutter. So, I knew we’d need to plan this ourselves, and we did with lots of help from our moms, family and friends.

Our wedding didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a set color scheme, however, I was heavily influenced by the wide array of colors found in bohemian-chic style. Our print materials naturally followed suit. As a wedding gift, a dear friend custom designed our invitations and thank-youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. This ended up being one of my favorite elements of the day. Another pleasant surprise was our flowers. I really wanted a hand-picked-from-the-garden sort of vibe. So, a few days before the event I picked a bunch of stems from a local farm and created all the table arrangements. It was a lot of fun and not as time consuming as I thought it would have been. They turned out beautifully.

We made sure to keep our guest list short and sweet, inviting 50 of our closest people. We had an eclectic menu of some of our favorite things: fresh fruit, veggies, olives and chicken wings. We also opted not to do favors and instead treated everyone to an open bar. Another sentimental touch was incorporating a collection of blankets and afghans that were either owned or made by my Grandma Doris. We served homemade bars and cookies on antique dishes borrowed from family and displayed pictures of grandparents near the guestbook area. Shay and I were married on the 78th anniversary of Shayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maternal grandparents, who we knew were watching from above.

It’s always good to go through your closet a few times a year. I like to do it at the start of every s e a s o n . Ta k e a g o o d l o o k at the items you have. Do they still fit? Are they in good shape? Are they still on trend and do you feel comfortable wearing it? If not, get rid of them by making a donate pile, purge pile and keep pile. It doesn’t matter if you have five black dresses if none of them fit properly. That is prime real-estate that can be replaced with something that you love and makes you feel beautiful. 5. UNIFORM HANGERS Using hangers that are all the same color and type will help give your closet that initial pop of uniformity and allow you to look at what is hanging from them instead.

6 . M A I N TA I N T O S TAY S A N E By keeping up on the organization and taking 15 minutes a week to keep your closet in order will allow you much more time to find items when getting ready. This will also help in the long run of keeping your closet clean for the big overhauls you have each season.

3. SHOW OFF YOUR SHOES As a shoe-loving diva, I love to display my shoes like pieces of art. Having easy access to them allows me to grab them off the shelf and try on with outfits to get the whole look. Built-ins or stack-able shoe racks are great options to keep them from being stuck in the back corners of the closet f loor. This also helps you utilize vertical space that is often not used properly in closets.

4. BINS, HOOKS AND BASKETS Using other organizing tools in your closet to store smaller items such as jewelr y, bags, workout clothes and undergarments will help keep your space looking tidy and neat.

Not all of us have Carrie Bradshaw’s dream walkin closet. For everyone else, make sure you utilize your space the best you can by using shelving, hanging rods and storage to maximize space.

8 . W H AT T O S T O R E Being in the Midwest, we have to dress for seasons, so be sure to store heavier, bulkier items during the summer to create more space in your closet. Right after the holiday season, large Tu p p e r w a r e b i n s g o o n sale. Purchase them just in time for storing your winter wardrobe in order to easily access your s u m m e r i t e m s .

9. KNOW WHEN TO FOLD Any clothing that might stretch out if hung should always be folded. Sweaters, cardigans, heavy tops, etc. Be sure to place the heavier items at the bottom o f t h e s t a c k . From the bride ... Josh and I met through mutual friends and hit it off immediately. Being together felt so natural and right from the beginning. That motto is exactly how we wanted our wedding to feel—natural. We agreed to hold our festivities at Soaring Wings Vineyard & Brewery. Our strategy was to keep it simple and let the beauty of the vineyard speak for itself. Although I don’t remember much before or after the actual ceremony, I can remember the ceremony very vividly—almost like a moment frozen in time. Everything else seemed to fly by so quickly.

I chose the few decorations we had based on whether they could serve multiple purposes. For example, the mandarin oranges in our dĂŠcor also served as snacks for guests, the DIY marquee-style letter â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mâ&#x20AC;? and string lights are now decorations on our deck and the tree used as part of our wedding ceremony is now planted in the front yard of our home.

Although the day is mostly a blur, I do remember how I felt that day. What stands out most is the love. Not only the love that Josh and I share, but the love of our friends and family. Thinking of all the guests who traveled from near and far, and came together to support us and share in the celebration of our marriage, simply overwhelms me. What really made the day so wonderful was the love that surrounded us, and there is nothing more natural than that. We are so lucky!

My parents treated us to a Mexico vacatio n to cel ebrate, and l ittl e did I know it wo ul d be the best vacatio n. The s eco nd mo rning we were there Co l e got up earl y. I tho ught he was go ing to the gym with my dad, s ince that had beco me his ro utine. Instead, I wo ke up to Co l e l eaving the ro o m dres s ed in nice cl othes . I got o ut of bed and notice a Po st-It o n the co unter that read, “Hurr y and co me downstairs .” At this po int my hear t was racing. I had a feel ing that s o mething was abo ut to happen, but af ter f ive years I to l d mys el f not to get my ho pes up. From the bride ... The first time I saw Beck was in seventh grade at youth group (he was wearing a green and purple striped polo). In ninth grade, Beck sat behind me in math class and threw paper balls into my hoodie. We became close and I began to like him, because he made me laugh every time I saw him. Eventually we ended up at the same college, same dorm building and started dating. Beck asked me to marry him and I said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Yes!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;

“My mom tore out a magazine page with an ad for the ‘Made’ dress at Macy’s. I loved the bright orange color that would contrast beautifully with the green setting for our ceremony. I ordered one for each bridesmaid and the lacy sleeve with the pleated skirt was flattering on everyone.” ^ Bride

When beginning to plan our wedding, we knew we wanted our festivities to be personally meaningful, fun and uniquely styled. It took about five seconds for me to fall in love with the romantic willow trees and greenery at The Woods Chapel as an outdoor sanctuary for our ceremony. Beck is a musician, so he immediately loved the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis as our reception venue. We agreed that it had a perfect atmosphere for a celebration dinner and dance, as well as fun memories of attending concerts there in the past.

Another important aspect of planning was our attire. We agreed from the very beginning that both the bride and groom should get to feel awesomely stylish on their big day. Beck loved the idea that getting a custom suit at Martin Patrick 3 in Minneapolis meant that he would get to choose his fit and fabric for a suit that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d have forever. I loved that he cared in that way. For me, the dress was a tough decision because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m an artist and could appreciate the modern architecture of one dress and the classic, traditional feel of another. I ended up choosing my dress for its botanical lace pattern and the simple form that allowed me to shine, not just the dress. As crazy as it seems, the best detail of the whole planning process was the invitations. My mom is a graphic designer and we both love paper goods in all forms. I knew that I wanted to watercolor my invitations and had the luxury of a mom who could add professionally designed typeface and handle the printing aspect for me. It was so fun to work with her on layout ideas. I painted and painted and repainted. After the painting, graphics and printing, I had a little party with friends and family to add the gold leafing on the invites. That last hand-made step added the perfect touch of bridal glimmer.

Though the weather is growing colder, we wanted to create a warm and inviting bridal shower for our rustic, winter bride. What better place to host than Spearfish Canyon Lodge, infused with the smell of pine needles and a burning fireplace-which provided a cozy spot for Timeless Wedding & Event Rentalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s custom farm table.

Miranda Boenisch of Timeless Wedding & Event Rental brought snow to life with a homemade marshmallow chandelier, the centerpiece of the afternoon soiree. Our envisioned event was sprinkled with cool colors of blue, grey and mint with a dash of red. Elements of the outdoors were brought inside with painted deer antlers accenting the cake table, pine and cinnamon wrapped in the napkins, and berries everywhere from the cake to the spruce cone bouquet to our brideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crown.

From the Bride ... Tommy and I met through mutual friends during the summer of 2010. By our second date, I knew he was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the one.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; There was this unmistakable feeling that I had known him forever. Having both grown up in the Black Hills, we wanted to celebrate our marriage in a venue that truly captured the rustic beauty we were so fortunate to be surrounded by. Black Hills Receptions and Rentals turned out to be the perfect locale, offering both nostalgic charm and elegant touches in a dream-like, Black Hills setting. We loved that guests could wander the grounds, enjoying both an indoor and outdoor setting. Set amidst a backdrop of towering ponderosa pines and lush greenery, the venue lent itself perfectly to the photography and bucolic scenery that were both must-have elements for our wedding.

Fall in the Black Hills is a time unlike any other, which is why we chose a September wedding. The days are sun-soaked and mild, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this feeling of warmth and calm in the air. In planning our reception, I wanted to bring a Black Hills fall into the event space. We made this happen with rich hues of plum and champagne, accented by the soft glow of hundreds of candles. We also brought all of our floral arrangements from our ceremony to the reception, which enhanced the natural beauty of the event. Throughout the entire process, the staff of BHRR were consummate professionals, ensuring every last detail was attended to. By letting their team manage all setup and takedown, Tommy and I were able to fully relax and embrace a day thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s notorious for passing too quickly.

Along with a warm and inviting ambiance, catering was very important to us. Full guests are happy guests, right?! At the center of every lotus-fold napkin was a chocolate-covered strawberry, a special treat for each of our guests. We served a prime rib dinner, paired with a decadent dessert bar that featured everything from cheesecake to chocolate to tiramisu. I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safe to say everyone was well-fed. When he asked me to marry him two years later, the answer was a no-brainer. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d found a man whose compassion, generosity and kind-hearted nature helped shape me into a better person, and I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t letting go. In planning our wedding, it was my hope that those values would be reflected in every detail up until the very last dance.

AMALFI COAST, ITALY

Like a sparkling utopia rising out of the blue Mediterranean Sea, the Amalfi Coast of Italy is so picturesque you might have to pinch yourself to ensure your eyes are not deceiving you. Located in southern Italy off the Sorrentine Peninsula, 13 municipalities grace the soaring cliffs of the magical coast, including the legendary towns of Positano, Amalfi, Praiano and Maiori. And as if this romantic heaven could not get anymore ideal, the fabled island of Capri—arguably the most romantic island in the world—is just a short ferry or hydrofoil ride away.

Known as the “island of the gods,” Bali may be a place you’ve only heard about in the movies or referenced by professional surfers or divers. That is... until now. all that the area has to offer.” In the heart of the stunning historical quarter of Sorrento, the hotel’s rooftop terrace boasts incredible views of the Bay of Naples and a perfect place to simply rest and breathe in paradise. What to Do: According to Mary Jo, the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is May through September when the mild Mediterranean climate is at its finest. Grab the hand of your new spouse and wander the towns all connected via ferry or bus. Roam the ancient stone paths throughout the towns that offer some of the best views this side of paradise, or lazily lay by the rhythmic, lapping warm waves on any of the gorgeous beaches. To top it off, sip on and savor the locally grown and made Limoncello, a classic Italian after-dinner drink, and toast to your everlasting love and true Italian la dolce vita.

The honeymoon: Eze and Paris, France Married: April 5, 2014 What To Bring - A trench coat, walking shoes and a

great camera. Where We Went - Eze, Monaco and Paris. Why We Chose it - We both love to travel and wanted

to get out of the country while still going somewhere relaxing—bread, wine and the most picturesque landscape, France was an easy choice! Also, Paris is my favorite city, so Travis was nice enough to take me there. How Long We Stayed - 10 days. Where We Stayed - Chateau de la Chevre d’Or in Eze

and the Hotel D’Aubusson in Paris. What We Ate During the Stay - Bread, wine, cheese,

chocolate, coffee, pastries, repeat. drinking coffee while gazing at the Mediterranean Sea. We moseyed around Eze village, went hiking, drove along the coast of the French Riviera and spent a day in Monaco. The view was beyond gorgeous. It was hard to tear ourselves away from relaxing on a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Chevre d’Or is amazing, even just for a drink at their outdoor bar overlooking the Mediterranean. Anyone visiting the French Riviera should stop by Eze.

It could be a little overwhelming after a busy wedding. Give yourself a little time (somewhere like Eze) to relax and enjoy the beauty of France without the pressure of seeing so many sights. ^ travis + kelly

In Paris…where do you even start? The Latin Quarter and Germaine de Pres, the cafes (Les Deux Magots is our fave!), the museums (Musee d’Orsay fifth floor, the Louvre, the Musee de l’Orangerie, Rodin – the list is endless), strolling along the Seine, chocolate chaud and mont blancs at Angelina’s, a picnic in Tuileries or Luxembourg Garden, climbing to the top of something for a view of the city, spending a Sunday in the Marais and grabbing falafel at L’As du Fallafel, late-night dining in a street-side café, stashing a loaf of Poilane’s bread for your suitcase and day tripping to the Palace of Versailles, Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny or Normandy. Tid-Bit - I studied abroad in Paris and Travis had been

there before as well, which allowed us to enjoy the trip without the pressure of seeing everything for the first time. That is important for any honeymooner in the midst of post-wedding exhaustion. Kaylee, John and Dainty Obsessions go way back. Like, our very first edition of Dainty Obsessions back. Rewind to the fall of 2012— the then engaged couple graced our first issue, modeling in our Outdoor Rustic styled shoot and Kaylee became DO’s first cover model. Fast forward two-and-a-half years later—insert a rustic wedding in the Black Hills, a beautiful new home in Sioux Falls and the cutest accessory to any outfit, baby Ivy. The bond we share naturally led us to the Koch’s front door to interview them for our first edition of “Newlyweds at Home.” Meet the Koch’s.

Where do you live?

Sioux Falls, SD. Tell us your love story - Ha, love story.

Well, hardly that. We met at John’s afterbar party one night after a Nick Rallis Band concert at McNally’s Pub. I’m sure we both made great (intoxicated) impressions. Two months later, I posted a ‘single’ status on Facebook and John took the bait. He messaged to meet up and invited me to the St. Croix River in Stillwater, Minnesota where he and a buddy were boating. Do you rent or own?

We own our house. We just moved in December 2013. Did you live together before marriage?

We did. I loved it! It was so fun getting to 112

see each other every day and getting a real idea of what life would be like together. To each their own. It worked for us. What is your favorite wedding registry items, if different from most used?

Our favorite registry item is probably our glassware. We splurged and registered for Riedel wine glasses and love them. We got the stemless for relaxed occasions and the stem glasses for more formal occasions. We love our wine. What different decisions, if any, would you make about your wedding registry list?

Don’t register for too many things. I would have registered for less to make sure we got the items we really needed. We ended up receiving gifts we didn’t necessarily need and had to go buy the

things that were more necessities. If we would have had fewer registry options, maybe we would have gotten more of the things we needed. Which room in the house is your favorite and why?

The kitchen. Our new house is like a dream! I absolutely love the kitchen. It has a huge granite island, Viking stove, tons of beautiful dark custom wood cabinets and a large sliding door to hide the pantry and our glasses. I love how our nice wine glasses are displayed when the doors are open. We love to entertain, and everyone loves to gather around the kitchen. I also love our outdoor patio. From the kitchen, we have French doors that open to our patio. It has an outdoor fireplace that is so fun. Something about the crackling wood

and cozy fireplace outside with a glass of wine is pretty much the best. Do you have children?

We have one baby girl named Ivy who turned one years old in October. She is so much fun! How has she changed your relationship/marriage?

Our marriage has definitely changed. It is one of the best things seeing your husband with his baby girl. A baby has made us appreciate each other. It is interesting learning about what you want for your child, what you’ve learned from your parents, or just ideas you have come up with together. John and I see eye-to-eye on many points, so it is great to see it in action. On the other hand, it is hard to put each other first. We don’t go on as many dates, we aren’t as spontaneous, and trips are much harder. John and I are very social and we want Ivy to be the same, so we try and take her everywhere. We’ve gone hiking up Camelback Mountain in Arizona, Ivy’s been wine tasting with us on a winery tour in Oregon and she loved all of the horses at a rodeo in Wyoming. It’s really important to us to not let children slow us down (too much). Things may have to change or be harder, but we are determined to keep doing what we always have loved to do. How does your family handle finances?

John handles all of the big bills and I handle all of the small ones. John does the mortgage, everything with the house and vehicles. I then take care of any items we need for the house,

groceries and Ivy things. This is what we did when we moved in together before we were married, and it’s what we are still doing. It works for us.

back in rooms we wouldn’t use as much, like the guest bedrooms and formal dining room. Who cooks and who cleans?

Where do you splurge and where do you save when it comes to your home?

We had almost a year to buy items that we needed for our new home. Thankfully, we didn’t have to buy all at once. The home was much bigger from where we lived previously and had extra rooms to furnish. We sold a ton of stuff on Craigslist. We were able to bring a lot of rustic décor and items from our weekend cabin to help furnish the new house. When we were planning on new items for the house, we splurged in rooms where we would be often, like the kitchen, our master bedroom and living room. We then scaled

I do! John is not a cook. I remember when I moved in to his house, all he had in his fridge was beer and ketchup. Total bachelor. I love to cook. With cleaning, I do most of it. John loves to vacuum, so that’s his go-to, but I love a clean kitchen and bathrooms. What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meals?

Weeknight meals are something easy. I cheat sometimes. Look’s Meat Market offers delicious and ready-to-eat whole chickens and pecan smoked chicken halves. When I do cook, it’s something fast. John’s

favorite is spaghetti with meat sauce and homemade garlic bread. I discovered Mario Batali’s Arabiatta Sauce that has imported San Marzano tomatoes and spicy crushed red peppers, chopped onions and fresh garlic. It is to die for. Weekend meals are more work, but they are the fun ones! We recently bought a Kamado Joe grill from Look’s Meat Market and it is fabulous. I’m learning how to smoke on it and I will have to say, I’ve nailed the smoked ribs and pork butt. What’s a week in your household look like?

A week in our household is busy. We both work full-time and sometimes John doesn’t get home until late. Typically, we have dinner and then relax by catching up on TV shows. John loves HGTV. He owns a

construction company that is big into remodeling, so HGTV is right up his alley. I started a blog this year about our family. Some nights I’m working on a blog post and/or editing pictures, which has been a huge learning process for me. I love to write. It’s very therapeutic. When blogging, I try to be real and honest about my experiences. Bonding with other mommas that feel the same has been so much fun. Plus, what else was I going to do with the millions of digital pictures I take of Ivy? Hello virtual baby book. Weekdays are kind of in cruise control. But come Friday, we head to our second home in Yankton. There, we love to go boating, run on the bike trails near the river, or walk down to the beaches to relax on shore. It is perfect to go there to recuperate from the week. How did you celebrate your one-year anniversary?

We took a trip to Minneapolis. I was pregnant, but that didn’t stop us from having fun. We stayed at Hotel Minneapolis, which is in the heart of downtown near Target Field. We ventured around downtown, stopping at different bars to get a cocktail (or for me, a mocktail), had some fabulous food at various restaurants and went to a Twins game. What is one small way you show your love for your spouse?
