Hello there! My name is Alana, and I am elated to be the new managing editor of this beautiful publication that celebrates love, unity, and the incomparable Midwest. One of the many incredible things about our region, without a doubt, is the wedding vendors. We teamed up with Forever Bride and survived armies of mosquitoes in the prairie for our gorgeous “Something Blue” shoot, got away with a few (and by few I mean many) spills during our “Easy as (Mini) Pie” session, and ate donuts like gluttons after “Brides Who Brunch” wrapped. Aside from the unforgettable memories from shoots, my favorite highlights of the fall/winter issue are the stories. Whether it’s Manstrom Photography sharing their passion for their business and (especially) for one another, a selfie stick being passed around to family members during a real wedding ceremony to capture moment to moment, or our newlyweds sharing their first sushi date (he despises sushi) - these anecdotes are what weddings are all about. Manstrom Photography Husband and wife duo Jeremy and Jamie Manstrom have been smitten ever since they met each other six years ago. The owners of Manstrom Photography live in Grand Forks, ND, but they’re about as passionate about traveling for weddings as they are for each other. Capturing their special moments while they’re “working,” this pair could be the definition of doing what you love every day. We chatted with the couple about their careers and their advice on keeping the spark alive.
How did you meet? Jamie: We both play music and we were playing a show together in Fargo.

for a photo school project. I actually didn’t, I was just hoping Jeremy would comment on it. A little creepy, but it worked! Where did you two go to photography school?
Jeremy: We were in different bands. Jamie sings and writes her own stuff and plays guitar, and I played the trombone in a ska band. Turns out we had a bunch of friends in common.
Jamie: First I went to Central Lakes College in Minnesota, and then we both ended up going to the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, MT.
How did you end up dating?
Were you always involved in photography, Jeremy?
Jamie: After we had been hanging out with our mutual friends for a while, I put up on my Facebook that I needed a model
Jeremy: When we met I had just finished up a biology degree and I was applying to medical school. I wasn’t really happy

with where things were headed and didn’t really enjoy what I was doing. I met Jamie during that time, and we got married a year-anda-half after we met. Our wedding photographer was an awesome guy, and I thought it looked really fun and was like, "I want to do that." We changed plans and moved to Missoula. I took my first photo when school started. It seems like you travel a lot. What percentage of your weddings are in North Dakota? Jamie: Maybe about 30-40 percent are in North Dakota and the rest are travel. What are your favorite things to do in Grand Forks? Jeremy: Midnight movies. Jamie: We dress up in costumes and get really into it [laughs]. Any destination favorites? Jeremy: Disney World! Jamie: Jeremy is a pretty big fan. Jeremy: It’s my favorite place. Jamie: Every time we have a Florida wedding, we plan for an extra week for Disney World. Least favorite part of traveling? Jeremy: Packing and traveling itself totally stresses me out. Then I get there and it’s so much better. Do you have any frustrations working with your spouse? Jeremy: I suppose that we do [laughs]. We do work on our own schedules, so I go for runs to calm down. Jamie: It’s a little tough to shut it off, especially when you love your work as much as we do. If you’re not careful, it can sometimes feel like we’re always working. Bike rides and sushi dates with ‘no work talk allowed’ are a must to maintain that work/life balance. How often do you travel? Jamie: I would say we had about six or seven destination weddings this past summer and then we do a lot in the winter and travel by car a lot. That sounds exhausting. Jeremy: We listen to a lot of great podcasts!
It seems like you have a lot of fun scouting. Do you have a process?
3 fun facts about Manstrom Photography
Jeremy: It depends where you are. If you’re in the South or East we always start out with Chick fil-A and really massive Diet Cokes (or Coke Zero if the restaurant is fortunate to have it). So we get jacked up on caffeine and have a lot of fun. West, it definitely starts with In-N-Out Burger, which is the best.

Jeremy and Jamie share the same birthday (October 14). Their first date was a photo shoot. They’re on a mission to photograph in all 50 states, and they’re getting close!
When did you start capturing yourselves during work travels? Jamie: I guess when we started scouting, we started to prepare by taking certain shots we wanted to take with the couple. When it’s all planned out, it makes the day go much easier. We started taking individual photos of each other, then we started bringing the tripod along and really started having fun documenting ourselves. Do you put the photos anywhere after they’re taken? Jamie: We have wall space in our house and office and started doing an Instagram wall that looks like old Polaroids. What is your favorite part of working together? Jamie: For me it’s definitely the amount of time we get to spend together. I don’t feel that other spouses get to spend so much time together, and I really enjoy that. Jeremy: I feel like I’m very excitable, and Jamie’s always right there, and I can share that with her immediately – that’s great. If there’s not someone there to share it with you, the highs aren’t as high. You two seem to have so much fun together. Any advice for newlyweds? Jeremy: What makes sense to me is that everyone has things that you love and are super exciting for you, and making sure that you share those things with your significant other is important. Include them in your excitement and be in the moment.
Jamie: And the fact that we get to do it together is great since we spend so much time away.
Jamie: It’s easy to get wrapped up with life being busy and crazy, and just simply being active and going for a long walk together really helps.
Any advice to those thinking of working with their partner?
Jeremy: And everything is better with an elevated heart rate [laughs].
Jamie: I think what’s helped us is laying out tasks. If you don’t, then it all gets jumbled up. Jeremy: Then there’s overlap and a bunch of time gets wasted. So much more efficient.

A : I don’t think it’s tacky; after all, these women are special to you, and you want them all to be part of your big day! However, I think a wedding party of more than 12 – five on each side – can be a bit crowded. You can also consider asking them to take on another important assignments, such as a personal attendant, your bachelorette or bridal party hostess/ planner, or day-of coordinators. Just make sure you let them know how much you appreciate their help and that you’re so happy they’re helping you make your day special. If you absolutely can’t imagine standing at the altar without all of your sisters and besties, plan for a large enough space during the ceremony and reception. Q : I’m planning my bachelorette party and feel weird having my sister-in-law there. I’m not going to do anything unbecoming, but I want to let loose with my friends without worrying about her. Is it okay not to invite her? A : You’ll need to get to know your future sisterin-law eventually, and starting out by excluding her

may not be the best way to start off that relationship. It may seem awkward at first, but letting loose and enjoying a night out with her and your friends may be the best way to break the ice. It may help to have a talk with her beforehand and tell her about your friends and make sure she’s comfortable with your bachelorette party plans. Also, when all your guests are together, make sure you properly introduce everyone by telling funny stories or how each guest is related to you or your fiancé. Q : My budget is extremely tight. Is there any way to get out of serving food? A : Typically, guests expect a meal at a traditional evening wedding reception. If hiring a catering company or providing a meal for each guest is out of your budget, you can plan for a more casual meal or some light snacks and cake. Or, go with a nontraditional reception and plan a champagne brunch before your wedding ceremony or ask your guests to share their favorite dish and have a potluck dinner! Whatever you decide, make sure that it is clearly announced on your wedding invitation so your guests can plan accordingly. Q : My mom is crazy opinionated during planning. I know she’s paying for the majority of it, but it’s like she’s planning her day. How can I get her to see our vision without simply telling her to stop coming to appointments?
A : Planning a wedding is fun, so it’s understandable that mothers or mothers-in-law want to get involved, especially when they’re a major funder of the project! You can take a subtle approach and share your inspiration board on Pinterest with them so they have an idea of what you want, and then gently remind them when they’re overstepping. Or, you can be direct and tell her that, although you appreciate all the help planning and the financial support, you’re excited to plan your big day and that you and your fiancé would like to be in charge of making the decisions. Q : My grandparents have a charming rustic barn on the family farm in rural the country where we’d like to have our reception. The problem is the barn is not big enough to hold the amount of guests we’re anticipating and there are limited facilities. What are some suggestions to help us start the planning process? A : Great question! If the barn isn’t large enough to host your guests, you can still use it to have the dance and rent a large tent nearby to add space for dining. Having a tented wedding reception is a great way to create a venue in remote or rural locations, and with the right design and décor, you can create any atmosphere. Tent rental companies offer tents of various sizes to accommodate parties of any size and should also be able to provide you with the additional equipment you may need, such as lighting, seating, a dance floor, dinnerware and décor.

BRITTANY + CHARLIE BY DENISE DEPAOLO
Brittany, originally from Dillworth, MN was working as an occupational therapist in Fargo, ND, while Charlie helped run a family business in the oil boomtown of Williston. “He was living out west and I was living here, so we only really got to see each other on the weekend,” she said. “We did that

for almost a year - Skype, text, talking on the phone.” Then his visits to Fargo became more frequent, the business in Williston was closing, and the couple started thinking about a shared future. While celebrating their one year anniversary in the Twin Cities, they spent a day ring shopping, which Brittany remembers as “stressful.” “It felt like a lot of pressure - not that we might get engaged, but that I didn’t want him to feel like he had to get me a superexpensive ring if that’s what I ended up liking.” Months went by, Charlie took a job as a transportation manager, and the couple decided that the next step for them was to buy a house. However, marriage was on both of their minds.
“I was putting the pressure on him - ‘You know, we’re buying this house together. We should probably think about getting married.’ Apparently he already had the ring by then,” Brittany said, laughing. With a close friend acting as their real estate agent, Brittany and Charlie finally found the right house for themselves. Charlie took this step as an opening to take an even bigger one. After receiving the news that they had beat out two other bidders, he teamed up with their agent, Mari, to plan a surprise proposal. Charlie told Brittany that he wanted to dress up and go out to a nice dinner. The same day, Mari called to say the house was theirs and they should stop for photos with their “sold” sign. Brittany had a feeling

Brittany Hendrickson knew Charlie McPherson was special by the time they went on their first date. The Jamestown, ND native had been on her radar for a while, since they shared several mutual friends, but after he made it clear that he wanted to get to know her better, she says things moved pretty fast. Well, perhaps in their hearts. For the first several months of their relationship, the couple lived 390 miles apart.

that the dinner was going to be significant and didn’t want to screw it up. “I thought I knew what was going on, but I didn’t want to over-think it, in case he bought a kennel for our dog or something stupid,” she recalled. Charlie “reluctantly” agreed to stop by the house on the way to the restaurant. As he drove, Brittany remembers he was clearly a lot more stressed than usual. But when they pulled up, Mari was waiting for them and everything appeared normal. “We get there and start taking pictures by the sold sign.

I thought Mari was taking photos, but it turns out she was videotaping us,” said Brittany, giggling. “And I was completely unaware that it said 'marry me' on the sold sign. The side we pulled up to said 'sold' but the side we were on said 'marry me.' So I'm standing there, and she’s videotaping, and she tells me, ‘Brittany, fix your shoe.’ So I bent down and saw there was nothing wrong, and she said a couple of other things, and I’m clearly not getting it, so finally, she just said, 'Look at the sign!'” Charlie got down on one knee, and after Brittany said “yes,” he warned her not to tell anyone
yet. He said he still wanted to have a nice, romantic dinner just the two of them. But when they arrived at Granite City for dinner, both of their families and a big group of friends were waiting. “Most of them thought they were just celebrating us getting a house,” she said. “He’d asked my mom permission - my dad passed away a few years ago and talked to my grandma and his parents, so they all knew what was happening, but the rest of our friends and his sisters didn’t know. It was pretty cool.”

From the photographer ... Sarah and Nick first met in August of 1988. The meeting took place just to the left of the building blocks and right in front of the finger-painting easel in Mrs. Moorehead’s preschool class at St. Mary’s School. Despite their shared affinity for popsicles and nap time, the two didn’t become close friends until they were reunited 10 years later during their freshman year at Lake Forest High School. However, fate wouldn’t bring them together as a couple until 2012 when Nick ran into a mutual friend, discovered Sarah was single, and began pursuing her in earnest. After missed calls and embarrassing Facebook messages, Sarah and Nick finally went on their first date on February 26. The rest, as they say, is history.

Sarah and Nick reside in Chicago with their adorable dog, David Bowie, but chose to marry in their sentimental vacation destination for years – Door County, WI, also known as a little slice of Cape Cod snuggled next to Lake Michigan. Working with the ever-awesome Door County event planners to keep their wedding day charming and elegant, yet rustic, Sarah and Nick selected a new venue for their reception, About Thyme Farm. Live chickens included, the farm set the tone for a perfect getaway for their guests! Cherry pie in lieu of cake, chicken-wire escort card holders, chalkboard and wooden signs throughout the farm, abundant florals, farm tables accented with wooden signs and sprigs of rosemary‌ the setting was the perfect environment for guests to get lost in and enjoy the celebration!

From the bride ... Matt and I moved to Jackson, WY on the same day in October of 2003 and started working for the same department at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. We started dating our first summer there. In 2014, we had been dating for 10 years and decided we should go on a trip to celebrate. We picked the turquoise coast in Turkey. One day we drove down the coast to see the ancient Lycian ruins at Patara. We spent the afternoon wandering around an amphitheater and Greek columns and then headed to the beach. After a few hours, we decided to hike to an overlook which had a view of 12 miles of sand dunes, mountains in the background and the sinking yellow sun into the rich blue water. Matt proposed at the top.

All of our events were inside as it was (supposed to be) winter – the temperature was unseasonably warm for March in Wyoming. We had 55 guests and fit perfectly in the cozy clubhouse cabin. To make the event more personal, we asked friends and family to help us with several details. My mother spent hours knitting a lace chuppah that we used during the ceremony, my brother-in-law made our save the dates and invitations (which we sent out electronically), our friend, Sydney, made our Ketubah, our friend, Josh, married us, a local jeweler and friend from my book club made our rings, and our friend, Ashley, made our wedding cakes (and she is going to make us a cake on our one year anniversary!).

I decided not to have a bouquet because I felt like it was a little old fashioned, and I wouldn’t do anything with the flowers other than take a few photos and hand them off to my sister. Instead, I carried a Go-Pro on a selfie stick (with ribbon tied around the handle to dress it up). During the ceremony, the selfie stick was passed around to many guests who filmed from their view. We now have an awesome video of our ceremony. After an intimate ceremony, our guests moved to the bar area and huge outside deck for cocktails. Our favorite restaurant in town, Rendezvous Bistro, catered a delicious dinner, and then we hit the dance floor for the remainder of the evening. Getting married was way more fun than we thought it would be. If we had known, we might not have waited 10 years to do it!

From the groom ... In March of 2010, Thea and I both boarded a flight from St. Louis anxiously awaiting all the fun and mischief a friend’s bachelor and bachelorette party offers. Arriving last on the Southwest flight, I was presented with two remaining seats: one next to a very large man and one next to a large and beautiful bachelorette party (I think you can see where this is going). As the flight continued, so did conversation between Thea and I. Before parting, we exchanged numbers, and over the course of the weekend, we exchanged messages that led to an arranged encounter at Caesar's Palace. And that was just the beginning...

From the bride... Even though we live in Washington, D.C., I knew immediately that I wanted to get married in my hometown of Kansas City. A lot of our guests would be coming from out of town, so we wanted to make sure the entire weekend was filled with things for everyone to do and really give our guests a taste of the city. The wedding itself was a reflection of our personalities, so we wanted to make sure some of Spinner’s Pittsburgh roots were incorporated. We did this by having a cookie table where all the cookies were made by his mom. We also did the traditional Polish “wedding dance,” which ended up being a blast for both those who knew what was going on and those that were new to the tradition. I loved that the wedding was a mix of traditions, but we also made it our own. Really having all of your favorite people in one room is the best feeling ever, and your wedding is pretty much the only time you will get to experience that.

From the bride ... We met on jdate.com and should not have met, given the 35-mile difference between our cities. The first date started out as a casual bike ride that evolved into the smelting of souls and the start of a universal partnership. The engagement wasn’t exactly glamorous – the evening started out at a wonderful 70’s themed outdoor concert at the Fort Worth botanical gardens. Much to my surprise, David had custom-designed a rose gold ring that was burning a hole in his pocket. After this beautiful evening, we returned home and as I was cleaning up the kitchen, he started blasting CCR throughout our newly installed stereo (his favorite band), and after running the stairs a few times, he got down on two knees next to the dishwasher and asked me to marry him.

Two months before we were engaged, I started a new job in Dallas, moved into a new house in Fort Worth (40 miles from work), and needed to completely learn a real estate market. Other than dress shopping, I did not start planning my wedding until roughly eight months before our wedding. My dad could not have been more amazing throughout the wedding process – planning a Wisconsin wedding from Texas was certainly not easy, but my dad is a take-charge individual and helped me completely execute my vision. He even signed up for Pinterest so that he could see my wedding board! Our rabbi commenced our intimate Ketubah service at my father’s home with immediate family and the bridal party. Our parents shared their well-wishes and the rabbi formally married us in front of our closest family and friends. We then shifted to the backyard where we had the official wedding ceremony – it was everything I’d dreamed it would be. The day could not have been more special, except that one person was physically missing, my mother, who passed away from cancer in 2010.

We chose Rustic Oaks as the venue because of the gorgeous barn, farm houses and scenery. The venue really helped us achieve the relaxed and casual feel we were hoping for. Our ceremony was outside and our reception in the barn. Outside of the barn, we had various yard games, a campfire with s’mores and a photo booth. Inside the barn, there was a lounge area complete with a vintage sofa. My favorite moment was our first look. We avoided each other while getting ready and setting up, which is pretty hard being on a farm. Nate was behind the farmhouse with his back facing me, and I remember my nerves and excitement were at an all-time high. I wanted him to see me in my dress, and I wanted to see him. I couldn’t wait for him to be by my side for the rest of the day and begin our journey together.

Where all did you stay on your honeymoon? Our trip consisted of exploring the South Island of New Zealand, so we started in Christchurch, where we met our two guides and a group 10 other individuals, a few who were also on their honeymoon. We loaded up on a small van/bustype vehicle and travelled the whole island and ended up back where we started. Since this was a hiking/kayaking trip, we usually stayed in

a lodge for a day or two and then packed up and took our bus to the next scenic spot. A few nights in, we took an overnight hike into the mountains and stayed in a shelter at a campsite with no electricity, so we all ended up cuddling by a fire. Then halfway through our trip, we made it to Queenstown, where we stayed in one of the nicest hotels located downtown. A few days later, we did another hike into the mountains, but this one was seven hours long, and we stayed in a shelter called Welcome Flat Hut for two nights. What did you do right going into your honeymoon? What tips do you have for planning? We did research on the weather and looked up

Any local places you fell in love with? The city of Queenstown – the hum of the city was just amazing. They are very environmentally friendly there. We went to an amazing Mexican place called Coyote Grill where we had the most phenomenal fajitas. They also had a really fun cookie place called Cookie Time (yum, I couldn’t get enough!). What were some interesting foods you tried? We tried duck and lamb. In many places I found their sauce combinations to be different. Some of the dishes were pretty heavy, like shepherd's pie, but their veggies and deli options were so fresh! Tea and eating healthy seemed to be very common. They have an awesome tradition called a “Tim Tam Slam” where you take a cookie called a Tim Tam and bite off a corner on each side, stick it into milo (hot chocolate-like) and suck until the cookie is soft enough and shoot it down your throat. It is delicious and super fun! What

activities? We obviously loved the hiking. The scenery was so beautiful and it changed every couple of miles. We kayaked in Milford Sound, which was really cool. What are the top items you would suggest to bring for someone traveling to New Zealand? A rain coat. We were lucky and ended up having more sunny days than not, but the winter there tends to be called the “rainy season.” A camera – the scenery is so beautiful and there is just so much of it. Plus you wouldn’t want to miss snagging a picture of the Mountains of Morridor (dorky Lord of the Rings reference). A sense of adventure – New Zealand is known for bungee jumping, skydiving, and all things adventure, so I suggest anyone who wants to go, be ready to get adventurous. What is your “must do” list for those going to New Zealand? Try the wine. Hike the Copland Track. When you get to the top, sit in the natural hot springs. Especially at night. It is one of the best places to stargaze in the world. You will not be disappointed. Kayak Milford Sound. Explore Queenstown. Eat a Fergburger.

It’s not every day that you enter a home the husband literally built with his bare hands. Newlyweds Andrew and Lara Morris recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary in their new Bellevue, NE nest, and we got the full tour while finding out about compromise, scheduling, and that darn kitchen backsplash.
How long have you been together? L: Since 2010, and he proposed in 2013. Did you two live together before you were married? L: He built this house, and that was six months before we got
married. That’s when we moved in together. What was it like moving in together? A: That was a struggle… L: Basically we had to throw a bunch of my stuff in the basement.
A lot of my things were very girly because I was living with all girls. Neither of us really had much, so we shopped for a lot together and the wedding really helped us get started. Favorite things registered for? L: Our favorite gifts were probably ones we didn’t register for, like
the knitted blanket from my aunt. She made it, so it was really personal. And people gave us personalized signs with our name on it and wedding date, and we got a globe from Andrew’s mother. Anything you would recommend to register for that couples might overlook? L: A steamer! It’s so much better than ironing. A: We got a hand-held Dyson, and I didn’t think we would use it and

go out to eat a lot. My mother works at Brother Sebastian’s, so we go there often. How do you show each other you care on a daily basis? L: He says I love you a lot, which I like. And he’s always coming up
and hugging me.

the time. L: If we can get through wedding planning and
building a house at the same time, we can get through anything.
