Editor’s Letter
Hello, summer! Wedding season is finally here, and we can’t help but squeal with excitement as all the festivities begin. Summer cocktails, fancy dresses, showers, celebrating with dear friends, and simply enjoying the longer days are a must. This issue we find ourselves enjoying three spicy cocktail recipes in the Food + Drinks Editorial, adventuring to Iceland with Ken and Melissa in our honeymoon diaries, and swooning over the most delicious real weddings here in the Midwest. One our favorite things this issue was the opportunity to style an editorial at the dreamy L’atelier Bridal Couture in Minneapolis. Gracing the pages you’ll find jaw-dropping designer gowns that will have all brides (and non-brides) racing to get their hands on one. We hope you enjoy the summer issue. As always, we appreciate your readership and the love you send our way. Grab a cold beverage and enjoy the latest. We had a ball putting this one together. Xoxo,

Rapid City, SD 605.430.6099 www.bellaseraproductions.com
Etiquette AUBRE Y T YS ON OF BE L L A S E RA PROD U CT ION S Q : We have a wedding budget that allows for 150 guests, but my fiancée and I have a lot of friends. Our potential list already exceeds 250. What’s the best way to whittle this number down? A : There are really two options here. You
can either decide to invite only the friends you see on a regular basis or you can have a smaller ceremony for just family while inviting close friends to the reception. Either way, the goal is to include those who matter most to you, and sometimes in order to do that, you conclude that all of your friends may not need to be invited. Q : I have a very overbearing mom. I love her, but overbearing. She is insisting on wearing a custom, very dramatic, red gown. It’s over-the-top to say the least. How do I compromise with her on wearing something different? A : If she’s truly set on wearing the dress,
ask her to compromise and wear it to just the reception. Emphasize that the wedding photos are really important to you and you would like to have softer, more elegant tones for the photos. This way she can have fun in her red dress, but also attend the ceremony and take photos in a more neutral outfit. Q : How do I get my guests to RSVP? A lot of our guests have not responded. Should I call? I don’t want to seem pushy or rude.
20
DO ^
A : If it is less than two months prior
to the wedding and you still have not heard from the majority of your guests, I wouldn’t hesitate to call or send e-mails. While you want to respect the fact that your guests have busy lives, you also need to keep your own needs in mind. I would limit the calls or e-mails to two and if they still do not respond with an answer, don’t feel offended. Simply remove them from the list and move on. Q : What are the duties of my bridesmaids vs. the maid of honor? A : The maid of honor plays a large role in
your wedding. From being your emotional support and levelheaded decision maker to your party planner and sounding board, this person is more than just a best friend. They’re someone who you can trust with all of your wedding details. Some of the MOH duties include attending vendor meetings, going dress shopping, helping pick out décor, and remaining the point of contact for the bridesmaids. Your bridesmaids, while important, play a lesser role and are the group of girls you can’t wait to party with and share some of your greatest laughs. Bridesmaids duties can include assisting the MOH with important decisions or tasks set forth by the bride, attend all pre-wedding parties and most importantly show up for the big
day in the agreed upon attire, ready to have a good time! Q : Why do brides wear a garter? And, do I need to wear this? It seems cheesy. A : Traditionally, the garter is considered
good luck to the gentleman that receives it once thrown. Just as ladies gather for the tossing of the bouquet, men gather for the tossing of the garter. The choice to wear a garter is entirely up to you as a bride. This tradition has slowly been fading into the background to make way for new wedding trends. Q : My friend and I are both recently engaged. She’s asked me to be one of her bridesmaids, however, she isn’t someone I was thinking of asking to stand up with me. I feel guilty and obligated to return the bridesmaid question. What do I do? A : The first thing to remember is this
is your wedding. You should never feel obligated to any one guest, family member, or tradition if it makes you or your groom uncomfortable. If you truly don’t see this friend as part of your bridal party, then let her down easy. Have a frank conversation with her, explain your reasons, and ask for her understanding.

Now it’s time to play! Just keep in mind the ratio 30 percent top (grapefruit), 20 percent middle (jasmine), and 50 percent base note (sandalwood). Shoot for around 30 drops total, given the amount of carrier oil and vodka called for. You can always add more later.

Check it regularly, and once you’re happy with it, add two tablespoons of spring water to the blend. Give the bottle a good shake for one minute. AENDEE In the heart of Fargo, North Dakota we step into the lovely AENDEE. Owner, Ashley Dedin, is hard at work deconstructing t-shirts, blankets, or any material she can get her hands on to create custom ties and bow ties. With a background in philosophy and studio art, Ashley has found the perfect way to create pieces that truly tell a story. We visited this charming studio to learn how sewing and all things hand-made have shaped her life. You don’t make just any bow ties and ties. Tell us more about the concept. AENDEE accessories are all about giving new life to old materials. All of my neckties, bow ties - basically every item I make is crafted from reclaimed material. I mainly use secondhand shirts and old neckties for fabric, but lately I’ve been experimenting with vintage lace and deadstock by-the-yard fabric, too. I love that secondhand materials add an element

of sustainability and storytelling to my products. I only have access to a limited quantity of each pattern and fabric, so everything ends up being one of a kind as well. Tell us more about your roots and how you got started. Ever since I began sewing I’ve loved to use secondhand materials. There is something special about taking apart a garment and using the material to
make something new. When I was in high school, I would fashion my own dresses and shirts out of secondhand sheets and thrifted clothing. After I graduated college, I rented a small studio in downtown Fargo so that I’d have space to work on my art and ended up sewing again. After seeing some of my work, a friend of mine who worked at a suit shop asked if I could make him some custom neckties. The rest is history.

How did you discover your passion for sewing? I’ve always loved to make things- but when I got my very first job at a fabric store in my hometown of Joliet, Illinois, I became interested in learning how to sew. My grandma would make our Halloween costumes every year, so I did have some influence from her, but I am almost completely self-taught. I received my first machine for my 16th birthday and taught myself how to sew clothing by taking apart shirts and dresses and making my own patterns from the pieces. There is something so fulfilling about sewing this way - it is almost like solving a puzzle and the finished product is something completely unique that you get to wear and enjoy. I love the problem solving element. There is always more to learn, new skills to acquire and perfect. Tell us about AENDEE. How did you build your brand? When I started making my own clothes as a teenager I did it all under the fictional brand AENDEE (the word is a inlay on my initials A.N.D). I would sketch the word out again and again and design different logos and make little hand-stamped tags to sew into my shirts. I never imagined that one day that word would actually become the identity of my business. When I started making and selling neckties I decided to use that “fictional” brand because I was still in love with the way that the word looked, and it seemed like a unique name for a clothing and accessory brand. I developed a more refined version of my logo, and it has stuck with me ever since. What brings people into your shop? I am really lucky to rent a beautiful little space downtown. The street that my shop is on is full of cute little boutiques and an amazing European-style pastry shop. It’s a great neighborhood for locals and tourists to peruse. I think people really enjoy supporting small businesses and getting to know the people who run them. A lot of people are surprised that Fargo has a “necktie store,” so that definitely piques their interest.
apart from other boutiques. Customers are more than welcome to peek into my studio and see how my accessories are made, and they can bring me their own material to be transformed into new items or can choose from my collection of secondhand shirts. It’s a very hands-on space where customers can be a part of the creative process. What can your customers and potential brides expect to see and experience when choosing to shop at AENDEE? I love working with people to help them find something unique, whether it’s for a special event, an everyday outfit, or their wedding day. AENDEE is basically a one woman show, so you get to have my full attention and I take my customers needs to heart. Tell us what a typical day looks like? I am lucky to live super close to my shop (basically across the street) so I get to walk to work every morning, even in the dead of winter. I usually show up to the shop a few hours before I open, make coffee, and catch up on the business side of things (e-mails, Etsy, social media). Once I’m open for business, I’m typically working on custom orders or building inventory, so you’ll usually find me in front of the sewing machine if you stop by. My days are very free-flowing, and I get to work on whatever it is that is either most pressing or most interests me. It’s one of the major perks of being self-employed. What is it about your custom pieces that make an event so special? Custom accessories can add such a meaningful touch to an event or wedding. If you’re choosing to have custom bow ties made for your groom and groomsmen, they know that you’ve selected each fabric specifically for them and for the occasion. I think it’s a very special way to show your gratitude for them being a part of your big day. Handcrafted items are always more meaningful than factory-made. I’ve made bow ties and neckties for people from the shirts of their loved ones, which adds such depth to an otherwise simple accessory.
What sets you apart from other boutiques?
What do you do when you’re not engulfed with all things sewing and shop life? What’s family life like?
Not many stores can say they make all of the items they sell in-house. The fact that my little store is also my studio where I personally handcraft all of the items I sell is something that really sets this space
When I am not sewing or working on ideas for AENDEE, I can usually be found in the company of my loving soulmate Seth and my pet rabbit Bun. Seth owns his own company as well, so we get to share in the joys and
3 fun facts about AENDEE
• Ashley opened her shop on the one year anniversary of making her very first necktie. • In the 2+ years that AENDEE has been open, Ashley has never used the same shirt twice. • When she started her business, Ashley was sewing on the machine she got for her 16th birthday.
stresses of entrepreneurship together. We love to veg out and watch Netflix, cook meals together, play Yahtzee and Rummy, and explore the world around us. In the spring and summer we love to ride bike, camp, and go on aimless drives around the city. What trends are you seeing for 2015 and 2016? I’ve always done mixed and matched bow tie collections because of the nature of my product, but they seem to be getting more and more popular just as an aesthetic element. It’s fun to have each groomsman express their personality through a unique accessory while having the whole party’s attire look great together. I think couples are also becoming increasingly more relaxed about their weddings and are focusing more on the family, friendship, and fellowship aspect of the occasion than the material side of things. Handcrafted elements are becoming very popular. Where do you draw inspiration from? Most of my inspiration comes from the shirts that I find while thrifting and the changing of the seasons. During the fall I love finding rusty oranges, deep chocolatey browns, and warm earth tones to use in my ties. After winter I’m usually anxious for spring, so I shift to using brighter colors, pastels and floral patterns. When it comes to designing new products, I’m usually inspired by my scrap bucket. I absolutely love digging through the scraps and playing around until I come up with something new.

From the bride ... Kai and I met 10 years ago while doing a high school English project together, quickly became best friends, and started dating a few months later. We wanted our wedding to reflect our history together, while sharing some of our favorite things - art and music - with our favorite people.
Our friends and family members are scattered all across the globe; having so many of them there with us was what made the day truly special. It was extremely important that many of the details of our wedding had a personal touch: Our friend Heather designed our invitations, our musician friends played during the

ceremony, my wedding bouquet was lily of the valley from my mother’s garden, and our dog Henri was the ring bearer. We chose the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden because it was where we had one of our first dates as teenagers and where - almost a decade later - we got engaged.
We really did try to think of everything while planning our wedding. That afternoon, however, a thunderstorm rolled in minutes before our outdoor ceremony was supposed to begin. Everyone pitched in to move the operation into the nearby Cowles Conservatory, where we had an impromptu ceremony lovelier than we could have planned! Words can’t express how wonderful this day was. In its fun, warmth, beauty, and spontaneity, it was the best way to both celebrate our past and start a new chapter as husband and wife.

From the bride ... We were married at a unique vineyard and barn venue near Madison, Wisconsin on a mild and sunny autumn day. We exchanged vows under a hand-built branch arch that stood just at the edge of the field, framing the rolling hillside. The first time we saw each other that day was when I walked down the aisle, and it absolutely blew me away to see all our friends and family gathered, and my soon-to-be-husband at the end of the aisle, tearing up as I proceeded. Those moments will be held near to my heart for the rest of my life. The entire experience of wedding planning and the wedding day was busy and stressful at times, yet very fulfilling. It turned out to be a perfectly imperfect day - of course some things didn’t go as planned, but the important part is that I got to marry the one person in the world meant for me, surrounded by family and close friends. The rest flew by so fast that it barely registered.

“When you start wedding planning, I recommend jotting down three or four items that are at the absolute top of your priority list in terms of ‘must-haves.’ Then go on to list the other items in order of importance, keeping in mind that your top priority items will likely make up a greater portion of your budget. You get what you pay for, so invest more in what you care about.” ^ Bride

Our stylist was key to the success of the day. Anna Margaret from A.Styled Event came up with wonderful ideas that fit our wedding design, which we defined as “casual elegance.” She created our signage, sourced materials (like our seed-packet favors), and really put my mind at ease. We wanted a big focus to be on our guests’ overall experience, and Anna was vital to bringing every element together cohesively in an enjoyable way. One thing that was very important was choosing to do things our way, and not the way that we were expected to do them. By cutting out traditions or things we didn’t want to have (like a time-gap between ceremony and cocktail hour, travel between the ceremony and reception, and the bouquet/garter toss) we were able to focus on what we wanted most - a fun guest experience. We accomplished that with a meaningful and personal ceremony, a really delicious farm-to-table meal, an open bar, and a DJ for entertainment.

From the bride... Josh and I met many years ago while working at an assisted living home. He was (and still is) the most handsome man I have ever met, with the biggest heart. We held hands on our first date and haven’t let go since. We wanted our wedding day to be an intimate celebration of our love with our family and closest friends. We both love nature, camping and adventure. When we found our venue, Camp Tanadoona, we immediately knew it would be the perfect place to join our lives together. We filled the day with all of the things and people who make us the happiest. Our most memorable moment was standing on the steps of the house during the ceremony and feeling so much love and support surrounding us. Marrying my best friend in the most amazing place with hearts full of love is something I will never forget.

The advice I have to future brides is simple – appreciate it all. Planning a wedding is so much fun, but it is easy to get swept away in all the little, little details. Remember, they are just that. Details. Starting a life with someone you love should always be the primary focus of the day. Remember to sneak away and spend time together. Remember not to worry about the 80 percent chance of rain or forgotten jewelry or ants in the cupcakes. Honestly, at the end of the day, none of that matters. Enjoy every moment.

AMY & MAURY PHOTOGRAPHY: LIZ BANFIELD LO C AT I O N : M I N N E A P O L I S C LU B , M I N N E A P O L I S , M I N N E S OTA
From the planner... Although Amy and Maury knew each other in high school, it wasn’t until later in their adult lives that they started dating. It didn’t take long, though, for Maury to realize Amy was the girl of his dreams. He proposed one evening at their condo with the ring tied to one of their cats’ neck. Right away in the planning process they knew they wanted to do a black tie wedding, because according to them, there are never enough reasons to get dressed up! Working with myself, they settled on the theme of

“Modern Glamour.” Inspired by the ‘50s, their wedding would incorporate new, fun twists on traditions. This theme was perfect for the venue they chose - the swanky Minneapolis Club, steeped in rich history and tradition. Both the ceremony and reception would take place here, and they wanted to have their guests engaged throughout the night, moving from room to room. The piece de resistance was the “champagne fountain” that greeted guests upon their arrival to the ceremony. Guests could help themselves to a glass of champagne that was sitting in the ice sculpture.

The bride also loves Cinderella, so hints of the fairy tale showed up throughout the event-- from the save the date card, which was designed to look like the Cinderella movie credits, to the beverage napkins that read “happily ever after.” Of course, a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without some fairy dust, which was represented by the hundreds of votives hanging over the aisle. Although Amy didn’t wear glass slippers, her knockout Valentino shoes (complete with a sparkly bow) seemed fit for a princess. The sunset ceremony was truly magical with candles everywhere, gold chiavaris, and accents of lace. Flowers were kept light, mainly ivory and champagne blooms with accents of pink. As guests made their way to the social hour and then upstairs for dinner, the color scheme in the floral shifted by taking out the pink and adding in yellow. The floral complemented the moss green linens, creating a very formal, yet fresh feel for dinner. The Minneapolis Club charger plates and etched water glasses were a unique addition to the tables, giving the wedding a sense of place.

From the Bride ... Nick and I met through mutual friends from high school and college with the help of a small social media site called Facebook. We started messaging and he asked me out for coffee. A coffee date at Coffea Roasterie later that week turned in to dinner that same night, and we have pretty much hung out every day since then. He has had my heart since the moment he asked if I wanted to share a French press.
Our ceremony was at Shalom Christian Reformed Church, which is the church in which I grew up. Both our grandfathers are pastors, so we were honored to have Nick’s grandfather marry us and my grandfather give a prayer at the ceremony. It was very special to have that aspect of generational blessing covering us as we were united in marriage. Nick is a musician, so the music

selection was very important. He chose a few of our favorite hymns. Several of the talented musicians Nick has worked and played with over the last several years were able to put together a band that provided the perfect musical backdrop for the ceremony. Nick also sang a very sweet song during the ceremony for me.
We both appreciate all things vintage, so we tried to add some vintage elements wherever we could. We also added a few touches throughout the reception to reflect our mutual Dutch heritage, such as Wilhemina peppermints, which we both have memories of eating as kids. For our centerpieces we placed individual cakes of varying flavors at the center of each table and topped them each with a classic kissing Dutch couple. Nick is a lover of donuts, and when we were dating we had a lot of fun finding and visiting many of the small town donut shops in the area. I really wanted to incorporate this into our day as well. I thought it would be special to make this aspect of the evening a surprise for Nick, and it ended up being a lot of fun!

DO honeymoon destinations
Honeymoon Destinations
s by Tracy Kirby
So, you have committed to taking the plunge. That is, the matrimonial plunge. One could argue there is no greater adventure in life than marriage, and we at Dainty Obsessions could not agree more. That is why in addition to planning and hosting the most fabulous soiree this side of the millennium, we want to help you plan a grand honeymoon adventure to commemorate your greatest commitment. Below, we introduce you to two incredible Latin American honeymoon destinations that we think stand up to that tall order.
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
Considered by many to be the Paris of South America, Buenos Aires brings a level of culture, history, sophistication, and flair that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the world. As Argentina’s capital and largest city, Buenos Aires has an undeniable European influence, but possesses a true Latin American soul that will stay with you forever.
Rio de Janeiro is another Latin American gem located in vibrant Brazil and is one of the most visited places in the southern hemisphere. With jaw-dropping views of both coast and mountains, Rio is renowned for its gorgeous beaches, its worldfamous festival Carnival, Christ the Redeemer statue, rhythmic music, and status as host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Buenos Aires is the birthplace of the Tango - a sexy, sensual dance. That same mood seems to drench the whole city. With sultry romance in the city’s DNA, it is no wonder so many honeymooners find themselves sauntering through the beautiful streets of Buenos Aires experiencing the many flavors the metropolis has to offer. Additionally, with a rather tumultuous political history, the city and its inhabitants (porteños) instill a sort of melancholic mystery making it a destination worth investigating and savoring.
Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Rio has long been a place for love-struck newlyweds seeking a relaxing as well as zesty cultural experience. With miles of sandy white beaches and tasty beach cocktails, honeymooners can literally find their beach in Rio. Some of the most famous beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana beckon sun-seekers to their famous shores, while night clubs and world famous cuisine entertain newlyweds when the sun sinks down.
106
DO ^
What to Do: It would take you months, if not years, to explore all that Buenos Aires has to offer, so depending on how much time you are taking for your honeymoon it would be wise to plan exactly what you want to see. Don’t miss the Casa Rosada, Eva Perón’s grave, take in a tango show, explore the colorful streets of La Boca, consume arguably the best steak in the world, shop in Palermo, and of course take in every minute of adventure with your new partner for life.
Where to Stay: To stay somewhere you’ll see and be seen, owner and travel consultant Mary Jo Nelson at Travel Partners, recommends a honeymoon stay at the Belmond Copacabana Palace. “Opulence truly abounds at Rio’s most renowned hotel!” Mary Jo says. Located overlooking Copacabana Beach, this historic hotel
has been welcoming guests from around the world since 1923 and it has service and elegance down to a science. What to Do: Depending on the time of year you go, you can choose to simply explore beaches, eat local cuisine, be pampered, and brush up on your Portuguese. Or, you can inject excitement into your honeymoon by attending a rowdy futbol game, attend a lively night club, and join smiley locals in the street for a dance. “In addition to exploring Rio and feeling the energy pulsating through the streets and enjoying a caipirinha [Brazil’s national cocktail],” Mary Jo says, “I highly recommend visiting Iguazu Falls.” With over 250 heartstopping waterfalls, Igauzu Falls is a short trip from hot and heavy Rio and could be the perfect romantic getaway within your getaway.
Where to Stay: Kristina Wolfe, travel specialist at Travel Leaders Sioux Falls, recommends an unforgettable stay at Faena Hotel Buenos Aires. Located in the central Puerto Madero district, this hotel drips luxury and romance and may have you second guessing if you ever want to leave the
hotel at all. But If you do desire to leave the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires after a luxurious stay at the Faena, Kristina suggests making a trip to Mendoza, Argentina and staying at Casa Antucura Wine Hotel. An exclusive location overlooking the breathtaking Andes Mountains, Casa Antucura is the intimate, relaxing, and wine oasis you’ve always dreamed of.

Ken + Melissa Laskowski
Honeymoon Destination: Iceland Wedding date: August 30, 2014
What To Bring —1) Rain gear! Dressing in layers is key to being comfortable. In one day the weather can change from 30 degrees to 70 degrees, depending on where you are. 2) Microfiber travel towels. Lightweight and quick drying towels that you can clip to your pack are a must! 3) Gorilla Pod. With bendable legs, this little tripod allowed us to get some photos of ourselves even when we were alone in the wilderness! Where We Went —The best and most common way to see Iceland is to rent a car and drive around the country on what’s known as the “ring road.” Our trip included Reykjavik, Landmannalauger, Vik, Kirkjubaejarklauster, Hofn, and Djupivogur. Why We Chose it —Iceland has an incredibly diverse and unique landscape. We were both able to get two weeks off from work, so we decided to take advantage and go on a dream trip. How Long We Stayed —Ten days.
What We Ate During the Stay —Our favorite cuisine was the langoustine from Hofn, we also ate lamb, artic char, and reindeer to name a few! Ken tried hakarl (rotten shark), but I was not that brave! The food was delicious, but finding a bar that served pizza was a much needed break from Nordic cuisine.

Where We Stayed —In order to keep our trip affordable, we stayed in a combination of mid-scale and low-end hotels. A few felt more like hostels than hotels. However, we always felt safe and the places were clean and welcoming.

What We Did —Lots of excursions and activities. Some highlights included snorkeling the continental divide in 35 degree water, a spa day at the blue lagoon, hiking Landmannalaugar, exploring the waterfalls and geysers of the goldxen circle, hiking Skaftafell National Park, boating in the glacier lagoon, and having a few nights out in Reykjavik.
Recommendations —Iceland has incredible hot springs due to the volcanoes. Every single one is unique. Some have been made into spas and some are just natural pools to which you can hike. We tried to hit a different one every day.
Anything else you want to explain- The big tradeoff in planning a trip to Iceland is deciding when to go. July offers the best weather and 23 hours of daylight, but you will not see the Northern Lights. We went in shoulder season in September. We had plenty of daylight for our activities and saw the Northern Lights come out the same night that we could see the red glow of an erupting volcano miles away. We felt like we won the lottery being able to experience something so unique! 110
DO ^
Your “must-do” list —Seljavallalaug pool was a hidden gem where you can relax in warm waters while looking at seven different waterfalls. We loved our time at the glacier lagoon, and since they are always melting, the landscape changed each time we went. Our hike in Landmannalaugar was challenging to get to, but a really incredible experience. You definitely need a four-wheel drive vehicle if you plan to go!

DO newlyweds
The Newlyweds at h o m e
ALY & LOREN CARROLL Meet the Carrolls! This married couple of five years are no strangers to Dainty Obsessions. Aly has photographed several beautiful weddings that have graced our pages. This sweet pair opened the doors to their newly remodeled historic home in Des Moines, Iowa and allowed us to take a peek. We were not surprised at all to find a perfectly put together and oh-so-charming abode. Enjoy!
Tell us your love story— We met when
I was 17 and he was 19 through mutual friends as a blind date. We continued dating through college. He proposed during a surprise sleigh ride in a snow storm right before Christmas. About a year later, we tied the knot with an outdoor wedding at a local vineyard surrounded by our closest friends and family.
114
DO ^
Do you rent or own? Own. Did you live together before marriage?
No. Since you kept your own space, tell us about the process of moving in together.
When moving into together, we basically started over with no furniture, except for a
few things. With the help of my friend and interior decorator, Jocelyn Williams, we teamed up to create a home that reflected the design and feel Loren and I wanted. Which items from your wedding registry do you use most often?
Kitchen utensils and cooking gadgets. What different decisions, if any, would
you make about your wedding registry list?
I would have asked for some help from those who have been running households for decades. I would have loved to know what was really important versus what is just fun or cute. Which room in the house is your favorite and why?
Our living room! It is so comfortable with lots of seating for guests and many windows to let a lot of light in. Where do you splurge and where do you save when it comes to your home?
We have splurged on quality and comfortable furniture. My favorite stores are West Elm and Room & Board - their items are so timeless. I have no doubts we will have them for a long time. Who cooks and who cleans?
I cook and Loren grills. We clean together or take turns. I am so thankful to have a husband who recognizes how busy my wedding season gets and is there to pick up the slack and pitch in cleaning toilets and emptying the dishwasher. What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meals?
Our go-to weeknight meal would be roasted brussel sprouts and marinated chicken on the grill. On the weekends, we like to hit up one of our favorite spots around town.
daintyobsessions.com daintyobsessions.com
25 115
What is one small way you show you love your spouse?
Always on the go. Loren is a realtor and I am a wedding photographer, so we are usually out and about meeting clients, working from a coffee shop, and grabbing lunch when we have a free moment.
Now that we are both self-employed and really enjoy our careers, I think it’s important to recognize when to put them away and focus on our quality time together without any distractions.
Do you have any children?
How did you celebrate your one-year anniversary?
Not yet, but hopefully very soon. Have you started any family traditions?
Not really. We have stuck with the normal holiday ones when we get together with our extended families.

Six months before we said “I do,” we bought a major fixer-upper. Throughout our first year gutting that house, we spent a lot of time trying to wrap everything up and get each project completed. By the time our first anniversary arrived, we had a very relaxing evening finally enjoying our brand new

kitchen and newly finished old home. How does your family handle finances?
Loren takes care of all our personal finances, and I focus on my business finances. What is your favorite wedding memory?
Dancing at the end of the night, surrounded by our parents, siblings, and friends. They’ve got moves! How do you remember your wedding in your home?
We have a few photos up in frames around our home. Have any tips on how to balance your relationship, with life, friends, jobs, etc.?
With owning your own business or businesses, I think life can become very mundane focusing on only that day in and out. I believe that when you first start, many days there is no such thing as balance, but working hard so later you enjoy the life you want. I feel like we are finally in that stage of still working hard (and sometimes really long hours). We are reaping the benefits to put towards other business endeavors, traveling, and hopefully starting a family.

What is something the two of you have learned to compromise on?
How we spend our money. What’s your favorite date night idea?
I like simple dates, like cooking dinner together and then spending the evening watching a movie or catching up on our favorite series. What is the most surprising thing about marriage?
How hard it is some days, but also how your love grows for your spouse like you never thought possible. When we got married I thought I couldn’t love Loren any more than I did that day, but when you go through struggles and triumphs together, it creates a stronger bond as the years pass. What is your favorite thing about your marriage?
Having my best friend by my side through everything.

Mari Klotzbach
“Take advantage of all the great apps and websites that are designed to help brides plan their day. Many have checklists and calendars that map out what you should be working on every month leading up to your wedding.”
“Have your florist make a preview bouquet during your flower selection. Though I did like my flowers, they were not quite what I had in mind. It would have been worth it to order a few stems beforehand to see them in person.”
“Never underestimate the power of asking for help. People genuinely want to help, and our wedding would not have been nearly as beautiful without all the help we received.”
“There is no ‘right’ way to have a wedding. We had an evening ceremony with a classic cocktail party afterwards - no seating arrangement and no traditional meal at the reception. Pub tables were scattered about the room and heavy hors d’oeuvres were butlered to guests. Do things your way and everything will feel right and fall perfectly into place.”
