{ { dain·ti·est, noun, plural dain·ties. adjective 1. of delicate beauty; exquisite: a dainty lace handkerchief. 2. pleasing to the taste and, often, temptingly served or delicate; delicious: dainty pastries. 3. of delicate discrimination or taste; particular; fastidious: a dainty eater. 4. overly particular; finicky. noun 5. something delicious to the taste; a delicacy.

Origin: 1175–1225; Middle English deinte worthiness, happiness, delicacy < Anglo-French ( Old French deint ( i ) e ) < Latin dignitāt- (stem of dignitās)

I may have mentioned that autumn days were my absolute favorite, however, the holidays make me just as happy (the office may or may not have pressed play on the Christmas music days before Halloween). There’s no other time quite like the holidays. With celebrated traditions, glitter and sparkle, festivities aplenty, warm apple cider and snowflakes in the air, you just can’t beat it! This year has been tremendous for us, and we are feeling grateful. We’ve continued to build on the foundation of quality, expertise and weddings, showcasing the ever-talented essence of the Midwest. We’ve also accomplished a few new things we’ve never done before, like successfully host our very first Dainty Obsessions live wedding event. We also had our first speaking engagement at the Design Center of Sioux Falls and at the Get Hitched show in Fargo. Even our team is growing! Get comfy and grab a hot chocolate, this issue is one of our best ones yet! Stunning photography, delicate materials and textures abound inspired the entire winter issue. We travel to dreamy honeymoon destinations, relive a 32 year love story from a real life couple, swoon over a Blossoming Affair styled shoot, welcome wedding guests in style, and are inspired by 5 real weddings that range from western ranch with tasty BBQ to an outdoor, Scottish kilt affair. When we conceptualized this issue, we wanted to capture the spirit of love, cozy winters and dreamy inspiration. We hope this becomes a blueprint for planning your perfect wedding celebration. Happy holidays and happy New Year! Cheers!

our 30’s and own quite a few household staples that couple’s traditionally register for. Is it okay to register for a down payment fund for a new home or honeymoon trip instead? A : As more and more couples are planning

to say “I do” into their later 20’s and 30’s (and beyond this as well), couples are finding that not only are they more established within their professional careers, but also on the lifestyle front. While registering for something romantic and fun such as a honeymoon is certainly an option, it is important to remember that some wellwishers will want to purchase a physical gift. Think outside the box. Do you love to camp? Do you enjoy cooking together? These are all unique options that you can put onto a registry. And a reminder of bridal etiquette: Registries should never be included in your invitation suites. This information can be added to any bridal or couple’s shower invites or your wedding website. Q : I feel like the most

ungrateful person, but I really don’t like my engagement ring. It’s not remotely my style. Should I say something? A : The person of your dreams has

likely spent hours looking for the ring that not only symbolizes their love and commitment to your future, but also a

style that they feel confident you will love because he/she chose it. While this is truly a matter of personal choice, the one thing I would stress is to remember why you are now engaged. Does the style or size of the stone need to reflect that? The answer to this should be no. However, if the ring design affects something such as your work (medical field or working with children) or your fear of a center stone sitting too high in its setting, I suggest talking with your fiancé about looking for a different setting or design. The wonderful thing to remember is that you are engaged and starting a new chapter of your lives together.

processional details, photos and etiquette can be discussed with your wedding planner. Q : I am a doctor. Would I include

a “Dr.” title on my envelopes and invitations, Or do i leave it out? A : There are many details involved in

creating the perfect wedding invitation that I always encourage clients to collaborate with stationery designers or their wedding planner to ensure that all etiquette involved (grammatical or otherwise) in the stationery process is covered. If you are a doctor, you should absolutely include this within your suites.

Q : I have 3 friends who I want

tell them to start their wedding board, but think of these questions as they begin to pin: Does this reflect who you are as a couple? Is this attainable on your budget? Will you look back on your photos 10 years from now and still love the idea? If the answer is ‘yes’ to all of these questions, then pin it! Also, working with a wedding designer or wedding planner will really help in the process of creating a wedding day that truly reflects you and your style as a couple.

everything in your wedding needs to match. The new ‘normal’ in weddings is everything out of the ordinary (and what I personally love): having a significant person of the opposite sex as your “best person,” including your parents in your wedding party, or mismatched numbers of attendants, just to name a few. The most important thing is that you select a wedding party that supports you as a person, supports and loves you as a couple and supports your future with your soon-to-be spouse. DO the little things

r Welcome Baskets INSPIRATION TO GREET YOUR GUESTS IN STYLE!

A welcome basket to greet arriving guests is not only a great surprise, but a thoughtful gesture to extend your gratitude for the distance guests have traveled to celebrate with you. These gifts can be as simple or as extravagant as you would like, so the possibilities are endless. If you are planning a fun theme or destination wedding, definitely choose items that play on your theme. Select items unique to the location or food with snacks and beverages that are made locally. Even if you do not have a defined “theme,” you can still pull in elements from your event style to create a perfectly coordinated welcome basket. If you used a specific icon or a monogram on your invitations, incorporate that on a welcome tag or the cover to your weekend itinerary. Of course, pulling in your wedding colors is essential, so choose a basket and embellishments accordingly! It’s always a good idea to focus on

20

DO ^

comfort and include goodies that are sure to delight any guest. You may choose to create a basket that your guests will know is so “you” (and your fiancé, of course) by providing your favorite products, drinks and treats. Skip the travel-sized toiletries; opt instead to focus on including a variety of snacks - both sweet and savory - to help satisfy the midnight munchies. Keep in mind that packaging snacks in smaller bags or individual portions will allow you to include a greater variety. Don’t forget to include some bottled water! Our welcome basket below features a variety of treats. Included are two of the couple’s “date night” favorites (popcorn and chocolate-covered raisins), taffy (fresh from the groom’s hometown), cinnamon-glazed pecans (the bride’s own recipe) and bottled water - all with customized tags and labels. Have a friend who makes an amazing snack mix or a grandma with a recipe for

the world’s best chocolate chip cookies? Include them! These are great ways to add a truly, personal touch. We also included a pashmina shawl (with a favor tag that reads “for a late night stroll”), selected in shades to complement the wedding color palette. You can’t go wrong with a personal note from you and your fiancé - this is probably the next best thing to personally greeting every guest as they arrive. Just a short note to say “hello” and “we can’t wait to see you” will speak volumes. Whatever items you choose for your baskets, remember that guests will undoubtedly appreciate your thoughtfulness in preparing something for them. Gather ideas with your groom or wedding party and, most importantly, have fun with it!

Tres Chic It is love at first sight upon entering the stunning Tres Chic in Grand Forks, North Dakota. We are smitten with owner Katie Norby’s impressive dress collections, sheer elegance of her boutique and overwhelming knowledge on all things style and bridal.

I’ve always loved formal wear, especially evening gowns. Even as a child I started designing dresses with my Barbie fashion designer kit. I started working in the bridal industry with my first job. I’ve dabbled in many different facets of the retail industry, but always find myself drawn back to the wedding industry. After working for multiple corporations in the bridal and formal wear industry, as well as having participated in the pageant circuit, I found myself wanting to open my own establishment where I could be my own boss and bring a little splash of new energy to the Grand Forks area. What types of services, designs, lines and accessories do you offer? At Tres Chic we are a full service bridal salon offering multiple couture fashion lines to fulfill the needs of every bride. The main bridal designers 32

DO ^

that Tres Chic offers are Pronovias out of Barcelona, Spain who offer the White One collection for the budgetconscious bride, Jovani who is based in New York City who offers multiple styles, whether it be lace or crystals to catch the eye of a variety of brides, and from Enzoani we offer their Blue and Beautiful collections. What was your inspiration for opening your business? I wanted to work for myself. When I moved back to the Grand Forks area and was planning my wedding, I noticed there were few bridal shop options. I also noticed a lack of a concierge-style bridal services. After my wedding, I started designing plans for my own salon. I basically compiled everything I had wanted to experience as a bride but wasn’t able to and applied it to my store. For example, I experienced small bridal rooms, so at Tres Chic we have spacious bridal suites that are personally decorated. Also, each brides guests

have a comfortable waiting area which provides an intimate experience for everyone. My number-one goal is for every bride to have a true once-in-alifetime experience in my salon. What trends are you noticing for the upcoming 2014 season? Color is becoming quite popular in bridal. I am seeing lots of tones such as blush, mint and light blue. Also, the illusion neckline and cap-sleeves are becoming very popular. The designs this season seem to have a very dainty, feminine feel to them. My designer Pronovias has also created a fabulous sparkle tulle that I am obsessed with. It gives each dress this subtle shimmery glow. The silhouettes I am seeing most are the ball-gown, a modified mermaid or a straight sheath. In addition, I am noticing that many designer are adding a plunging “V” to the back of their designs. It just adds a little flirtatious feel without offending anyone of an older generation.

DO get to know

What can people expect to experience when coming to Tres Chic? Tres Chic strives to get to know every client personally so that our staff can work as effectively as possible together to find the perfect dress. Our staff each have their areas of expertise in order to make the most of our client’s appointment. When should brides start looking for their dress and what is the process like? The bridal gown is what truly sets the tone for the entire wedding, and therefore is one of the most important components. Brides should begin their search for the perfect dress as soon as possible. It typically takes around four months for gowns to arrive from most designers, but we recommend that bride’s purchase their dress at least six months in advance. Any words of advice to dress shopping brides? When going to a bridal appointment a bride should wear neutral undergarments. Bright colors can potentially show through some bridal gown materials, making it more difficult to visualize the dress on the wedding day. Brides should also bring shoes of a similar height to the ones they would like to wear on the wedding day itself so they can get an idea of the whole look. The most important piece of advice we like to give our brides when booking an appointment is to have only the essential people accompany her. Too many opinions can overwhelm a bride and make it difficult for her to get a sense of what she truly envisions for herself.

Steve and I met at Urban Ventures, an inner-city non-profit in South Minneapolis. I was volunteering and he was the sole chef at the kids’ café. I was first swept away by the honesty of his eyes and his passion for cooking and children. After a month of afternoons working together, we were “snowed” out of work and went for coffee. A week later, after a play and long conversation over drinks, we both went home feeling like we needed to tell our friends that we’d found the one! It was a magical and fantastic holiday season of meeting friends and family. Six months later, we were engaged and heading to Thailand for a year living abroad.

Wedding planning from the other side of the world helped narrow down what might be an overwhelming amount of choices. Our goal was to have the wedding feel elegant but relaxed and, most importantly, “us.” It was important to involve our families as much as possible, our love for local flairs, our international travels and Steve’s Asian heritage. We delegated tasks to family members and friends and chose three to four small details we wanted to do ourselves. We scavenged thrift shops and garage sales for a variety of picture frames to display over 80 photos from our lives together and growing up. Food was also an extremely important part of our day. In addition to the whole roast pig (which was a hit among guests) as a nod to a traditional Hawaiian Kahlua pig, Steve’s family made appetizers to pass around during the cocktail hour. Instead of cake, we had my sister and a friend scoop up two of our favorite flavors of Sebastian Joe’s ice cream.

DO budget 101

Budget 101 Written by: The staff of Sadie’s Couture Floral & Event Styling

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Over the past few years working within the Midwest (specifically in the nonmetropolitan Midwest), we have developed a guide for assisting bridal clients in determining what type of wedding their budget would allow. The vast online resources for brides planning their wedding have been both very positive and negative. The positives are that so many online resources allow a bride to pull together their vision. The downside is that prices are never associated with the barrage of images one may find. We love when clients bring in binders full of images and can vocalize their vision; however, there seems to be a disconnect with budget and vision. Additionally, online resources offer budget calculators, which brides should utilize, however, a couple issues we’ve seen is that, again, the “visions” do not always match the percentage breakdowns of one’s

budget. Also, these calculators do not account for guest counts. Which, in the Midwest, tends to be much higher than national averages. As a result, we developed generalized categories of weddings: the modest wedding, the moderate wedding and the comprehensive wedding. What is important to note is that rather than determine one’s overall budget amount, we have broken three types of weddings into “per person costs.” This is merely a guideline, and naturally people will float between the categories based on items that are more/less important to them. The costs figured in for each type of vendor is based on Midwest/non-metropolitan vendor price averages. As a generalization, if a bride were to say she is anticipating 300 guests and her overall budget is $20,000, the breakdown of categories would assist in determining a different approach to planning.

The Modest Wedding Average cost per person - $61.88 | 250 person wedding - $15,470.00 | 400 person wedding - $24,752.00

Bridal Shower Written by: Megan Brandsrud

A bridal shower is an age-old tradition that still holds a modern-

day prominence in wedding festivities. However, having once consisted of simple afternoon affairs with tea and treats, bridal showers have evolved into grander events that come with certain expectations. Here are some basic etiquette tips for hosts and brides-to-be to keep in mind in order to have a fun and royal-approved bridal shower.

PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO BLU PHOTOGRAPHY STYLING RSVP EVENT PLANNING + STYLE GRAND OPERA HOUSE, DELL RAPIDS, SOUTH DAKOTA

The Host with the Most A bridal shower should not be thrown by the mother of the bride, future mother-in-law, or anyone immediately related to the bride since it may appear that they are just asking for gifts. Typically, the maid of honor or the group of bridesmaids will host the bridal shower. Regardless of who hosts the shower, the host(s) should be on hand next to the bride to greet guests as they arrive.

It’s All in the Invitation There is no correct number of guests to invite to a bridal shower; however, all bridal shower guests must also be on the guest list to the actual wedding. Bridal showers are typically thrown a few weeks to a couple of months before the wedding. Invitations must be sent out at least one month prior to the bridal shower.

daintyobsessions.com

59

Showering with Gifts Since it is understood that guests attend the shower with a gift, the bride should already be registered by the time the shower invitations are sent. It is perfectly acceptable to include registry information on the invitations. Gifts are opened during the shower, so it is not acceptable for guests to put a check or gift card into a card. Gifts are traditionally passed around and it would not be appropriate for other guests to see what amount was given.

Make it a Theme Party In the past several years, theme bridal showers have become popular. Themes range from kitchen showers to Around the Clock showers. A theme can help give the host direction on decorations, drinks and food. Themes also help give guests an idea of what gift to give since shower gifts are usually smaller and less expensive than wedding gifts.

daintyobsessions.com

61

Ribbon Bouquet Save the gift bows! Ribbons and bows from shower gifts should be kept to create a bouquet that the bride then carries down the aisle during the wedding ceremony rehearsal.

Give Thanks The host or the maid of honor should sit next to the bride during gift opening to keep a list of the guests and the gifts that they gave. The bride should handwrite thank-you notes to the guests the week following the shower.

Groom’s Surprise In the past, the groom would arrive at the bridal shower with flowers for the bride right before she opens her gifts. This tradition is making a come-back, and it is a nice way for bridal shower guests to meet the groom before the wedding if they haven’t had a chance to do so before.

Alex proposed on a Saturday in November on what started out as a cold, rainy day. He was eager to get going and suggested we “go on a hike before getting malts so it doesn’t get too dark,” which seemed out of character for him, but a legitimate claim. When we got there we climbed up to a remote bluff that had a great view of the ombre-pink sunset. While standing next to him gazing at the sky I could feel his heart beat through his arm, I turned to ask him if he was okay but he was already down on one knee. And, of course I said, “Yes!”

The love of fashion has been passed down from generation to generation in my family. Full of at home sewers, trend right women and vintage lovers, I followed in their footsteps. So it came as no surprise that I found much of my wedding inspiration from fashion magazines. For the feel of the wedding, we wanted guests to get a sense of who Alex and I were and our style. The church we were married in is this quaint church founded in 1853, and the reception site at Mendakota Country Club offered great outdoor views. We opted out of traditional tuxes for the groomsmen and instead chose chambray shirts and all different patterned bow ties. We wanted our wedding party to have a more casual feel, but still look well put together. For the décor, we included mason jars, candy-striped paper straws at each place setting, along with their wedding favor. The floral arrangements varied from table to table where we incorporated my love of vintage glass.

Thomas and I grew up with a similar urge for adventure and a shared passion for travel. It was no surprise to our families that we met in South Korea, thousands of miles from both of our homes. I was born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland while Tom was raised by his American parents in Germany. After college in Minnesota, Thomas joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in South Korea where I had gone after University to teach English. We met in an Irish bar in Itaewon, spent a year dating in South Korea before Thomas was moved to California. I traveled a little around Asia before joining him. When my time to leave approached, Thomas decided he didn’t want me to continue spending my time between Scotland and California. We got married, I stayed and it was the best decision we ever made.

“Thomas took only a little convincing to wear a kilt. It was a little tricky to have them all rented and lugged over to the United States from Scotland, but when I saw him and the groomsmen as I walked down the aisle, it was all worth it! ^ Samantha

We love food, the outdoors and a great party, so we wanted to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere for our wedding. Choosing a caterer who shared the same love for local produce and ethical meats was key in our decision. We did a little research and stumbled across Big River Pizza. I got in touch with Steve Lott and discussed our vision and how important fresh produce and delicious healthy food was to us. Wood fired pizza made with local Minnesota ingredients was perfect! Living so far from family really made our day a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Not only were we celebrating our love, but we witnessed our favorite people in the world meet each other for the first time and, in many cases, what may have been the only time. We were overwhelmed with the love and support we received from our family and friends. 76

“A personal touch was our decision not to have a cake, but a cheese cake tower! Neither of us have ever been much of a sweet tooth, so we wanted to have exactly what we would enjoy after any meal: Cheese and wine. ^ Samantha

“I was delighted when I found my wedding dress during a mother and sister trip to New York City. I rarely see them because of the ocean between us, so it was extra special to have them there. We wandered into a vintage store, pulled a dress off the rack and it was just the style I had been looking for. Plus, it was only $200! ^ Samantha

Our faux bride and groom were ready to party into the New Year celebrating love, igniting sparklers and popping champagne. Our bride looked like an A-lister with her gown from The French Door, while we gave the groom a “late night” look with a loose tie. The bride’s bouquet was inspired by the Oakridge Nursery greenhouse as it looked like a garden of pink containing phoebe garden roses, pink astilbe, ranunculus and lisianthus. For extra drama, wedding planner and designer Lisa Gillund of Johnny + Dottie accented the bouquet with black and gold shimmered ribbon.

Gillund brought a festive, yet masculine feel to the design by mixing metals while adding green and white floral. Mercury glass vases held white hydrangeas, lisianthus, ranunculus and lambs ear while silver challises showcased black river rock and echeveria on the tablescape. All of this was nestled within a blanket of Italian ruscus. Vintage gold plates with gold flatware were accompanied by lavender infused St. Germaine in vintage champagne glasses on the head table. As this is an evening fete, Icon Lounge + Event Hall head chef Mike Fitzmaurice put together little delicacies like an artisan cheese plate and Casino Oysters with lime, cilantro, red onions and peppers for guests to indulge.

That was only the beginning, as Kari Popham of Sugar’s Baked Goods and Sweet Treats went all out for our New Year’s dessert table. Small bites included champagne and chantilly crème parfaits, champagne flavored lollipops, and gorgeous vanilla bean French macaroons hand-painted with a metallic gold detail. The finale was the two-tiered cake with textured buttercream tinted in a bright raspberry tone, topped with a metallic gold glaze and lit up with festive sparklers. In this styled shoot, we imagined toasts being made, stories being shared and memories being created late on the dance floor.

Our wedding was a glowing labor of love. Ben, my mom and best friend were so solid and supportive of my vision throughout the entire planning/acquiring/creating process. Basically everything but the clothing was handmade, which made for a wondrous site to take in when everything came together on the wedding day. We came up with a DIY for almost everything. We also spent a great deal of time treasure hunting through thrift stores and estate sales. I’ve always found so much joy and fulfillment in creating and event planning, and loved being fully invested in every detail of our special day.

We wanted our wedding day to be genuine and homespun- creating something that reflected who we are 100 percent. When we were conceptualizing how the day would feel, we agreed we wanted it to be almost folk-festival like, and full to the brim with the autumn magic of the Midwest. Being outdoors was a given, and the rustic barn at the Arbor Day Farm was a gorgeous blank canvas that was easily tailored to fit our vision. We pulled inspiration from flea markets, favorite coffee shops, concerts we’ve loved, and the old farmhouse I grew up in. We love the simplicity and raw beauty of folk music and implemented those foundations into our planning. We dreamed our guests would be immersed in the amazing sensory elements of fall: bonfire smoke and brown sugar scents in the air, cozy textures, rich colors, delightfully mismatched details, warm drinks, homemade spice cakes, and of course gettin’ down to some quality tunes!

DO honeymoon destinations

Honeymoon Destinations

s Tropical by Tracy Kirby

If you show that lucky fiancé of yours only one page in this magazine, let it be this one! Especially if they are the responsible party in planning the honeymoon. After all, following all that huffing and puffing involved with all things wedding planning, you deserve the most relaxing vacation of your life. Not to mention, nothing says the beginning of forever like some quality time together, and of course a little pampering. Here we walk you through two enchanting destinations that will leave you two even more incandescently in love.

CABO SAN LUCAS

TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS

Cozied up to the Pacific Ocean on the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula in vibrant Mexico, Cabo is the ultimate crowd pleaser. A popular cruise stop and vacation destination, honeymooners are no strangers in this always-festive Mexican paradise.

Exploration and serenity are the name of the game in this picturesque, exclusive group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. Consisting of about 40 islands — the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands — it is a newlywed’s dream sanctuary of requiescence.

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Our go-to Cabo expert Kristina Wolfe at Travel Leaders Sioux Falls describes Cabo as the ideal locale for soaking up the warmth (especially coming from these frigid Midwest temps). “Worried about having rain on your honeymoon?” Kristina said. “Go to Cabo. With only 11 days of rain a year, it is a sure bet for sunshine.”

Why Honeymooners Flock Here: Having recently visited there, Tracy Heezen, a Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Specialist at Travel Partners Sioux Falls, has become an avid advocate for a honeymoon (and even destination wedding) in this captivating island utopia. “The beaches in Turks and Caicos are white, powdery and just beautiful,” Tracy said. “And the water is absolutely crystal blue, making it a wonderful place for relaxation and a beautiful honeymoon.”

What to Do: Whether you are looking for an intimate, quiet and relaxing time or you want to get adventurous with water activities, tequila tasting or sightseeing; Cabo can deliver. Not to mention the nightlife is nothing short of crazy and electric!

Where to Go/Stay: Tracy recommends staying at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa. This sprawling resort literally has everything you could possibly imagine, including a 45,000 squarefoot water park and is located on part of a beach of what many call “the best beach in the world”. Additionally,

with different villages and experiences to choose from, Tracy highly suggests the Key West Village as the ideal area for honeymooners. With adultonly pools and restaurants, options of one or two bedroom suites or up to three and four bedroom villas (maybe bring some friends or family along?), and of course the highest level of luxury, you and your honey may never return to reality. What to Do: Turks and Caicos offers one of the longest coral reefs in the world, making it a destination for snorkelers and divers. Other water sports such as kayaking, paddle boarding, deep sea fishing, etc. are also widely available. However, if you’re merely seeking to sunbathe, eat and drink world class cuisine and spirits and simply delight in your new marital status with the love of your life; well then, Turks and Caicos can offer that, too.

Where to Go/Stay: Due to its immense popularity, Cabo has countless accommodation options. Kristina suggests the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort and Spa. A luxury all-inclusive resort located on its own private,

secluded beach is a true adults-only oasis. “It is five minutes to downtown Cabo and is perfect for the active honeymooner,” Kristina advised. Also, for a deep splurge, Kristina suggests the One & Only Palmilla Resort. “If you want simply the best with the ultimate in luxury and a possible celebrity sighting, stay at the fabulous Palmilla!”

Lauren + Kevin Hall The honeymoon: Dominican Republic MARRIED: SEPTEMBER 1, 2012

La Romana, the third-largest city in the Dominican Republic, has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country due to its pristine beaches, lush tropical jungle and turquoise sea. This is what newlyweds Lauren and Kevin envisioned, “We wanted a relaxing and tropical destination where we could spend stress free time together in the sun and water.” Opting to put their iPhones, tablet and watches away, this ensured the honeymooners seven days of truly escaping and thoroughly enjoying quality time together. Wanting to make the most of their vacation, the couple chose to upgrade their stay at the Catalonia Gran Dominicus, All Inclusive Resort. With that, their holiday included several restaurants to choose from and, more importantly, lots of rum. “The Dominicans love their rum! You must try Mamajuana- a local drink of rum, honey, red wine, soaked in a bottle with tree bark. [This is] rumored to work in many ways, such as an aphrodisiac and headache cure,” said the couple.

“I imagined a very relaxing vacation of sunbathing and naps, however after a day of that I was ready to go explore,” said Lauren.

DO happily married

How did the two of you meet?

We met in the fifth grade and started passing notes in seventh grade. Judy was a foot taller than Doug until their senior year but this didn’t stop anything. We were sweetheart candidates our sophomore year at Howard High and dated throughout. It wasn’t until summer of senior year that we truly fell in love.

as our jobs took us to separate places we were both away from home and only saw each other on weekends.

What’s the most important element of a wedding?

then

Being surrounded by family and friends.

• If you want children.

• Finances.

• Know the extended family.

• Know what your faith base is.

At the time we did not appreciate this as much, but looking back it was such a blessing. Another memorable moment was when Judy’s dad gave her her mom’s sterling silver rosary. This meant a lot as her mom had passed away when she was young. What is your craziest wedding moment?

The craziest moment we would have to say was the wedding dance. After 32 years we still have people talking about how much fun it was. We had our dance in Fedora, S.D. at the old gym. What’s your biggest advice to current planning couples?

Our biggest piece of advice for engaged couples is to focus on the marriage, not the wedding day. Some people get too wrapped up in the “wedding,” and it is over before they know it. What makes your marriage successful? and how do you deal with disagreements?

For Doug: Marriage is a lot of give and take. Try not to waste time sweating the petty things.

For Judy: Never leave anything unsaid. Especially, “I love you, and I’m sorry.” Also, never go to bed angry. 120

Yes, we have three children. With each birth,

At first we had a long distance marriage,

What is your most memorable wedding moment?

Top 4 things any couple should know about each other before getting married?

Do you have children? If so, how does that change a marriage? our family dynamic changed. It is no longer just the two of you. We still tried to make time for our marriage, but sometimes we got wrapped up in our kids and neglected our marriage. Our advice would be to take time for each other every single day, even if it’s only five minutes.

They say the first year of marriage is the hardest. What was yours like and what got you through it?

APRIL 25, 1981 HOWARD, SD, ST. AGATHA CATHOLIC CHURCH 32 YEARS OF MARRIAGE

We try to come to some sort of a mutual agreement that works for both of us, keeping in mind that we are not always right.

We think the vows are so important. We feel that God brought us together in marriage and we need to follow His plan for us. We also felt that the sense of community at our wedding was a great witness to us. What has been your toughest struggle through life and how do you get through it?

We have both experienced loss of family members and both have had serious health issues that we’ve dealt with most of our married life. We have had each other to lean on and we’ve been richly blessed with the great support of family and friends. What sort of traditions do you follow as a couple?

This is more of a family tradition, but the Friday after Thanksgiving we go into the Black Hills and cut down our Christmas tree. Later in our marriage we started taking trips together. We feel that as long as we are together, it doesn’t matter where we are or what we are doing. What has been your happiest moment in life?

There have been several. Each birth of our children and watching them grow physically and emotionally. Another memorable moment was when ours kids surprised us with a huge 25th wedding anniversary party. Friends and relatives came from all over the U.S. to help us celebrate.
