Bartholomes’ robotic barn combines free, guided ow

BELLECHESTER,

Minn. —

The Bartholome family spent three years and visited many farms researching robotic milking setups before signing for robotic milking units in December 2023.

Jim and Lisa Bartholome — alongside their children Samantha, Madison, Austin and Dominic — milk 500 cows with seven Lely A5 robotic milking units. The Bartholomes switched to robotic milking units Dec. 10, 2024. They also utilize Lely Discovery Collector mobile barn cleaners and Lely Juno automatic feed pushers.

The Bartholomes said they put a lot of thought into their design up front, and through collaboration, moved forward with a robotic design that aligned with their vision and goals for their dairy farm and provided the care and comfort they desired for their cows.

Their system is a hybrid setup, which is a combination of guided and free-ow designs, which enables the Bartholomes to manage their farm efciently, reducing their labor costs by more than half. With the addition of the robots, the Bartholomes have eliminated four full-time milker positions.

Jim and Lisa said their children have been involved in the planning and transition to robotic milking as well as being part of the farm tours and robotic start up.

To prepare for the startup, Jim and several of the children had helped at other robotic startups. Jim said being involved and helping at these

Hybrid setup, full results

startups was helpful and valuable.

“We knew somewhat what we were getting ourselves into,” Jim said.

With the hybrid design, cows go through electric sort gates at will and can go to feed whenever they want, unless they have not been milked recently. At this point, the sort gates send them through to the robotic milking units.

With the hybrid setup, Jim said they have a 3% fetch rate.

“You’re not going out there pushing cows all day,” he said.

Another unique part of their design is the four-way sort gates that allow the Bartholomes to have re-milking capabilities, foot bath access and the ability to sort cows into a special needs pen. This pen has headlocks to help care for the animals and for other daily tasks such as breeding and health checks. The Bartholomes also have a separate area for hoof trimming and a connected walkway between their barns for easily transporting cattle.

Their barns mimic a hybrid Lely setup on a Canadian dairy that has 20 A5 robotic milking units. The Bartholomes toured this farm and worked with the producer to get insight for their space, and they said he was invested in their family and helping them with their project.

“We took our blueprints to him and we studied them with him,” Jim said. “We made a few changes, but nothing major.”

To the Bartholomes’ knowledge, there are not many of these hybrid Lely setups in the U.S.; there may be another one in Texas. Building a rare setup meant extra steps of planning and collaboration.

“There were some good discussions with Lely and Leedstone about how to bring a different design,” Lisa said.

The Bartholomes direct load their milk into tankers because they haul their milk

The

themselves. For their milkhouse setup, they mimicked a dairy near Green Bay, Wisconsin, which also has an automatic switch between their tankers. All switching happens automatically, and the system can be controlled remotely.

The Bartholomes built their robot rooms and sort pens onto the end of their barns. Jim said their site can accommodate them eventually building a second half of sand-bedded free stalls onto the end of the new robot rooms.

“We can mirror that some other day,” Jim said. “We are on the end today, but tomorrow, it could be on the center.”

The Bartholomes’ children, who represent the sixth generation on the farm, are all interested in returning to the dairy farm or being involved in some capacity.

“Everything is built for (and with) the next generation (in mind),” Jim said.

Jim has farmed his entire life.

“I enjoy working with cows,” Jim said. The Bartholome children said they are excited about the new technology and robots coming into the operation.

Before, the Bartholomes were milking in a double-10 parabone parlor built in the 1980s. With milking being done three times a day, the facility was in use 21 hours a day.

The parlor is currently closed, but the Bartholomes may eventually milk in it again. Jim said that, if cows were less expensive, he would have bought more to continue milking in the parlor. It was and will continue to be part of the plan to buy more cattle in the future when the price is more affordable.

Looking to future projects, the Bartholomes are interested in implementing sand reclamation, such as mechanical

separators. However, they are limited by their use of sugar sand which, due to regulations, is required for their 835-foot manure pumping distance with a 30-foot grade to their lagoon.

The Bartholomes robotic startup went smoothly. They said they are grateful to the friends, neighbors and ag businesses who helped them.

Thanks to the robotic milking units, the Bartholomes said they anticipate having more time with family. They also feel they will have more time to be farmers. They said the switch to robotic milking allows them more time to give needed attention and care to their cattle.

“Now, I feel like you can manage the cows instead of the people,” Jim said.

With the transition to robotic milking, the Bartholomes said they are still on the farm every day, but it is a different way of management.

A retrofit for the future

Dorrich Dairy, owned and operated by the Vold family — Brad, his wife, Suzanne, his brother, Greg, and their father, Rich — had upgraded from a double-8 herringbone parlor to seven Lely Astronaut A4 robotic milking units. The robots were installed in October 2019 at the Vold farm near Glenwood, Minnesota. Two of the robots were set up to milk the early lactation and lame cows, while the remaining ve robots were used to milk the balance of the herd in the existing freestall barn. The Volds said labor was their main factor for installing robots.

A seamless change in ownership

In 2020, Dan and Rosie Middendorf were poised to transfer ownership of their farm to their son, Joel, and his wife, Maureen. The father-son duo operated the 120-cow organic dairy near Verndale, Minnesota. They farmed 400 acres of crops, of which Joel was

Joe Rieden had wanted to be dairy farmer his entire life. He started buying his own cows at the age of 12. When he graduated from high school, he owned 40 milking cows and his par-ents, Jim and Pam, owned 40 cows on their farm near Mount Calvary, Wisconsin. The family continued to add more cows and was eventually milking 180 cows in a 34-stall barn. In 2008, the farm expanded to 270 cows and built a double-8 parallel parlor and a freestall barn. In 2020, the Riedens were milking 600 cows. Joe was the fourth generation on the family farm and with his wife, Susan, had three children. A look back at 5, 10 and 20 years ago

primarily in charge. Dan had suffered a brain injury from a car accident in 2014. For three years Joel and his siblings helped out as much as they could to run the dairy. In 2017, Joel decided to farm full time. The Middendorfs worked with a third-party nancial planner to develop a business plan so Dan and Rosie could retire and Joel and Maureen could become farm owners.

Growing up a farmer

Emerald Acres named Distinguished Holstein Breeder

Emerald Acres, owned by Paul and Debbie Ossmann, Ted and Lana Ossmann, and Don and Joyce Ossmann, was recognized during the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s annual con-vention as the 2019 Distinguished Holstein Breeder. Emerald Acres had bred 87 Excellent fe-males and 32 males that had gone into stud. The three Ossmann brothers bred for high type and production traits. Together they milked 480 registered Holsteins at their farm near Shirley, Wisconsin.

Itʼs all about breeding good cows

Brothers Mark and Al Schmitt were inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Breeders As-sociation Hall of Fame. While in high school, the brothers pooled their money and purchased the rst registered cow for their family’s farm. The cow, Jaque, went on to score an Excellent as a 10-year-old and had a lifetime production of 149,040 pounds of milk. The Schmitts ushed Jaque’s daughter and did some embryo transfer work over the years. The Schmitts’ whole herd could be traced back to Jaque. Al and Mark milked 100 cows near Rice, Minnesota, with their families, which included Mark’s wife, Natalie, and their children, Jonathon, Michael, Katie and Austin, along with Al’s wife, Brenda.

Dairying halfway around the world

Dairy farmers and dairy industry people from Minnesota and Wisconsin participated on a trip to New Zea-

land put together by the Minnesota Milk Producers Association. The group toured dairy farms, a processor, a bull stud and other non-dairy businesses on their trip Feb. 16-28, 2015. The participants said the trip was educational and they enjoyed learning about a different style of dairy farming.

From the dairy to the desert Libby Jungemann grew up on her parents’ dairy farm near Wolsey, South Dakota. When Jungemann was in high school, she joined the South Dakota National Guard. She graduated from basic training Sept. 11, 2003, at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. She then went to ad-vanced infantry training in South Carolina. Upon graduation in November that year, Jungemann was deployed to Iraq for a year and a half. While gone, Jungemann said the thing she missed most was doing chores with her family. She returned home to her family farm and planned to help there until the fall, when she started college at South Dakota State University.

Teamwork approach pays off for

Emerald Spring Dairy

Emerald Spring Dairy had jumped from 57th to ninth according to Minnesota Dairy Herd Improvement Association ranking for dollar value. The dairy, owned by Maurice and Rita Young, increased milk production in their herd average by 2,000 pounds from 2002 to 2003. The Youngs milked 500 cows three times a day in a double-12 step up parlor. The Youngs said their results were from not one single change but many small changes, such as ensuring proper milking technique and adjusting the ration.

This herd has a 74-pound tank average, 4.5 fat, 3.4 protein and our somatic cell count is 150,000. This is young and promising herd of cows. There are 45 first lactation and 40 second lactation animals on this sale.

The Keranen’s milk their cows twice a day and test with DHIA. The cows are housed in a freestall barn and fed a high forage TMR. For many years, the Keranens used a mixture of AI breeding and bull breeding. In the last three years all the cows have been AI by the likes of Tahiti, Alphabet, Barclay and Milky and the heifers have been bull bred. Darren said he has been careful in bull selection and likes to choose bulls that come from good cows and good cow families. They vaccinate at dry off with Ultrabac and Vira shield.

“I first started milking with 10 cows with my brother, I slowly grew my herd for a few years then it worked out for me to buy the home farm where I grew up. After a lot of updating my wife and I had our own farm. To this day my brother and I still work together putting in and harvesting crops together. Over the years of building up my herd I have purchased most of my cows from two local herds. They have always sold me good cows for a fair price. There were a few herd dispersals over the years that I bought a few cows from. Overall my herd of cows have treated me very good. It has been a very difficult decision to make to sell the cows but when your heart is not into dairying it is a very tough occupation to stay in. God Bless You All,” said Darren Keranen.

Barneveld High’s Durst joins 1,000-point club, works on family dairy

BARNEVELD, Wis. — The night of Jan. 23, Izzy Durst accomplished something only seven others in the history of Barneveld High School girls basketball have done. She hit a layup in the rst half, scoring 23 points in the rst 18 minutes, bringing her career total over the 1,000-points mark.

Along with performing on the court, Durst nds time to work on her uncle and grandfather’s dairy farm near Barneveld. At Jones Valley Jerseys, Durst works with her uncle, Evan Jones, grandpa, Lew Jones, siblings and cousins to feed calves, milk cows and help with the chickens and goats. Durst also shows cattle during the summer.

“It means a lot to be the eighth person in school history to do this,” Durst said. “I looked up to Hannah (Whitish) growing up. I was in second grade when Hannah and the team went to state in 2016 and my mom would always bring me to games. To know she was the last to reach 1,000 points means a lot to be at the same point she was at.”

Whitish is the program’s all-time leading scorer with over 2,000 points and went on to play four years at the University of Nebraska. She was a 4-year letterwinner in Lincoln, and continues to play professionally overseas. When back in the area, Whitish works with Durst to continue to elevate her game.

“Seeing the extra work Hannah has put in helps me play with a little bit of an edge,” Durst said. “She pushes me more and I never thought I’d be in this position, so her pushing me is just awesome.”

Already a 3-year letterwinner, reaching the 1,000-point plateau was a goal the junior had thought about since sixth grade, writing it down for a class project.

“I never really fully grasped what 1,000 points was when I was younger, it was just the benchmark,” Durst said. “I wrote that down along with helping my team reach the state tournament.”

Barneveld has historically been one of the toughest programs at Wisconsin’s Division 5 level, winning six state championships all under head coach Jim Myers.

After a few years away from the program, Myers returned to the gym with the Barneveld girls program this season where he became Wisconsin girls basketball’s all-time winningest head coach. He won his 711th game and broke the record the same night Durst earned her membership into the 1,000-point club.

“Back in the 70s, 80s and 90s, almost all of our girls were farm girls,” Myers said. “We might not have had the best teams, but we had kids that weren’t going to get outworked by anyone. They put in that extra effort and worked that much harder.”

PHOTO COURTESY OF THE DODGEVILLE CHRONICLE Izzy Durst scores her 1,000th point Jan. 23 in Barneveld, Wisconsin. Durst works on her uncle and grandpa’s farm near Barneveld.

The work ethic shaped by the farm is an element of Durst’s game Myers sees as a difference maker on the court.

“Izzy’s work ethic is the rst thing that comes to mind in helping her reach this point,” Myers said. “She’s a really good listener and takes criticism really well, even at times when she’s not looking for it. Her drive and her work ethic have helped her so much to this point.”

Learning how to handle criticism and continuing to have fun with what she is doing is something Durst said she has learned in the barn and on the court.

“What helps me most on the court is the work ethic,” Durst said. “Being there and being excited about what you’re there to do, owning up to what you did wrong and learning from it, that’s important when we’re working with the calves as we get them ready to show and continuing to grow on the court.”

Her experience on the farm has shaped her approach on the court she said. She works to continue to improve her game, elevate her teammates and keep a level-headed approach.

“You have to stay even-keel and not let your lows get too low or your highs too high,” Durst said. “There’s going to be times when the calf isn’t

walking, or shots aren’t falling and people and the calves feed off of your attitude. It’s important to stay positive and mentally tough.”

Along with basketball and the farm, Durst is active in other organizations. She participates in cross country, track and plays soccer. She is a member of the math and forensics teams and student council. She participated in SkillsUSA and was a 4-H ambassador.

“I really loved SkillsUSA,” Durst said. “That has helped me develop more life skills that I can use later in life.”

Durst and the Eagles played Highland Community Schools in the last game of the 2024-2025 regular season Feb. 21, resulting in a 56-29 win. Next up, Barneveld will begin the Wisconsin state tournament, hoping to return to the state title round and accomplish one of her other sixth-grade goals.

Durst has one more year remaining in high school. Following her senior year, she wants to play college basketball and study agriculture.

“I want to do something in the agriculture eld and then I’ll go back and live on a farm,” Durst said. “Maybe branch off my uncle’s farm so it’s still a family farm, but I’ll have my own place there. That’d be awesome.”

Sparta, Wisconsin Monroe County

Tell us about your chapter. Many things make the Sparta area a unique group of students to work with. At one time, this area was very heavy in dairy farming; however, agriculture has evolved here. We have a few larger dairy farms and some small ones, but the beef industry is rather large here. In the Sparta area, you will also nd pigs, sheep, goats and other hobby farms.

Sparta is considered a rural school and is very close to Fort McCoy. Most students do not have strong ties to the agricultural industry. However, they maintain a vested interest in learning more about it. Sparta is extremely active at the state and local levels. Our students spend a lot of time volunteering for various causes and prepare themselves for competitions in a variety of ways.

Sparta is a two-advisor program. Madelynn Green is our middle school agricultural teacher and FFA advisor; she has been at Sparta for two years and has been doing an excellent job. Eric Follendorf has been the agriculture teacher for 13 years. He is originally from Sparta, adding a unique knowledge base of information in the Sparta area.

At the local level, our students show at the Monroe County Fair, volunteer with Lights in the Park, raise money for various causes and partici-

pate in many more activities. At the state level, students participate in competitions, such as speaking and Career Leadership Development Events, and attend leadership conferences and conventions.

How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? Some of the volunteer activities our students are actively involved in include Lights in the Park, ice cream sales during a week for a charitable group, milk distribution at Butterfest, the annual community fair in Sparta and FFA card parties.

Each year, Sparta FFA gives out over 5,000 cartons of milk to people who attend the Sparta Butterfest parade. This is one way we support the dairy industry while also making our presence known in the community. We often solicit donations from businesses and, in return, give the milk to the community.

During FFA Week, we choose a charitable organization to donate money to. This year, our FFA members chose to give their money to the Stark family, who re-

cently experienced a house re that left them with only the clothes on their back. The Stark siblings were active in the FFA while in high school. Often, the FFA members support families who have a tie to the FFA and are going through hardship. However, it is not a requirement that they were active in the organization but rather that they have some sort of tie to the Sparta community.

Perhaps one of the more unique events put on by the FFA members here is the card parties. We host card parties to help reduce the winter blues for our elderly population and local farmers. We host four card parties, starting in January and ending in April. The number of people who show up for these parties has ranged from 50-100 people; that is a lot of tables. It is not the goal to make a lot of money off of card parties. It truly is a community service activity for the students.

Additionally, our students like to help set up

Air King industrial air cleaners are a valuable tool for capturing most airborne nuisance particulate. Our self-contained filtration units continuously pull contaminated air through multiple stages of highly efficient micro-glass filters. The filtered air is then recirculated back into the working environment without the need for duct work. This results in a cleaner, healthier atmosphere for employees, while saving you money by keeping heated or air-conditioned air inside your facility.

the lights in the park for the community. There’s nothing else that can put a person into the Christmas spirit faster than setting up lights. Whether or not the weather is good, we have a lot of people.

New this year, we started collecting deer heads for chronic wasting disease sampling to help the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources track the spread of this disease. Sparta members collected 88 heads, harvested their lymph nodes and sent them to Madison for testing. It was a great learning experience for our students as well as a community service activity.

Other community service events that the FFA members put on include National Night Out, Ag Day and summer ice cream sales.

What fundraisers does your chapter do throughout the year? Which is the most successful? There are many ways our chapter generates money for our causes. We are always soliciting donations for our group.

Perhaps the most protable fundraiser for us is our fall fruit sale. We sell only local products along with Florida fruit. People look forward to the sale each year, and the phone is always ringing with people looking for an FFA member to stop by their house.

Other fundraisers include the strawberry fundraiser, greenhouse sales, summer ice cream sales and Sparta FFA Alumni Fun Night. Each event brings in a little more money for our group at times when we need it. We are so thankful we live in a generous community that has always been willing to support us, meaning we need to give back to the community.

What are the biggest events of the year? The biggest event students put on is the Ag Day in May. Students really come together to put on this event, and they do a great job teaching agricultural topics to our elementary students. We have an elementary school population of 800 students, and about 30 FFA members get involved with the teaching component of the event.

Tell us about your farm and family. My family’s dairy farm has been in my family for about 15 years since my dad has owned it. My grandpa — my dad’s dad — is the oldest that works on the farm, then my mom and dad work on it every

With our Ag Day, we teach about a variety of topics, including the dairy industry, plants and soils, Wisconsin potatoes, horses and many other things. It’s always nice to see how excited elementary students get about the day. It’s also even more exciting to see how excited our middle and high school members get about being in the spotlight and sharing what they know about agriculture.

What is unique about your chapter? A lot of chapters in this area do a lot of similar things. However, the more you look around, you notice that it’s actually kind of unique how much we travel. Not every FFA chapter across the United States is capable of traveling with their students, and we’re very thankful to be able to offer these opportunities to our members.

We also feel very fortunate we’re going into a referendum which should allow for greater opportunities for our FFA members as well as the students who take the agriculture classes. One of the things Mr. Follendorf hopes to achieve in the near future is to have some sort of facility that will allow for large animals to be at school so students can work with them in a variety of ways. It would be really cool to do lambing/farrowing, minor veterinary care and nutrition labs with the animals.

We are now in our second year of the afliation agreement. This means any student who takes an agricultural class is automatically considered a member. They can do any activity they would like without the burden of having to pay dues. We are very fortunate that our alumni have obtained grants to help us continue to do this afliation.

When was your chapter founded and how has it evolved? The Sparta FFA was founded in 1929, the same year FFA started in the state of Wisconsin. Part of the reason why the Sparta FFA was so quick to form was because, already in 1929, we had an Ag Society Club here at the high school. It was a fairly easy transition for us to charter into FFA. There have been many advisors, and each person brings a little different skill set.

Alexis Vieth

MIDDLE SCHOOL SENTINEL

night. I help out when I can between activities and schoolwork. We have about 40 dairy cows on the farm.

Why did you join FFA? I joined FFA in sixth grade because a close friend told me I should join it with her. Ever since, I’ve really liked FFA and have wanted to be a part of FFA and grow in leadership and my agricultural knowledge.

What is your role in the chapter? I am the middle school sentinel and an active member in the chapter. I help plan events for the middle school, assist with running the meetings and encouraging others to attend conferences and events.

What FFA contests do you compete in? I compete in middle school Career Leadership Devel-

opment Events and quiz bowl, I look forward to expanding my knowledge more as I get into high school and have more opportunities.

What do you look forward to most in the upcoming FFA year? I look forward to going on trips and conferences we get to attend. I am very excited for our Experiencing Discovery Growth and Excellence conference, which is a leadership conference for middle school students to help with their rst steps in being leaders.

How has FFA shaped you as a person? FFA has shaped me to be a better person by having me step out of my comfort zone and talk to new people. I have also been able to improve my speaking skills by speaking in front of groups of my peers and running meetings and events.

What are your duties on the farm? I help out wherever my parents need help, from feeding the cows to assisting with milking. In the summer, I throw hay into the hay mow and feed the baby cattle.

What are your future plans? My future plans are to do well in high school and go to college to be a large animal veterinarian and continue working with animals on the farm.

When do you do chores? After school and on the weekends.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite is feeding the cats because they are cute. My least favorite is feeding chickens. What project do you enjoy helping your parents with on the farm? Cattle work, like drying up cows and moving cows.

Tell us a fun memory you have of living on the farm. When we rst moved here in May 2020, all of our family members helped us move into the house.

What is your favorite animal on your farm? The cats. I like petting them and their cute faces.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I think it would be really cool to be an artist.

If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have 100 cows, 20 cats, 17 calves and 30 heifers. I’d have a barn for all the heifers, calves and cows. I’d also have a parlor for the cows.

What is your favorite game to play on the farm? Hide and seek.
