Halifax welcomes first Chinese festival ALLISON LAWLOR Halifax is celebrating Chinese culture this September with the launch of the Halifax Chinese Festival. The first event of its kind in the region, organizers see it as a way to not only promote traditional Chinese music, dance and food, but strengthen ties between the Chinese community and Nova Scotia and help mark 2018, which is designated the Canada-China Year of Tourism. “We hope the community can learn more about Chinese culture,” said Genlou Sun, president of the festival’s organizing committee. “We have so many things to offer.” Bo Zhan, president of Panorama Immigration Service in Halifax, one of the festival’s sponsors, said the time is right for the Chinese community to have its own festival. Witnessing the success of the city’s Greek and Lebanese festivals, he hopes the Chinese celebration will share the same popularity. Aside from celebrating culture, the festival is also an opportunity to showcase the valuable role the Chinese community plays in the city. “I have witnessed the prospering of the Chinese community,” said Zhan. “The festival will let people know what we contribute.” The festival wraps up on Sept. 22 with the Chinese Festival Day. Taking place at Sackville Landing on the Halifax waterfront, the free event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Musicians from

place too. “There will also be an interactive showcase for people to better understand Chinese culture, including the making of clay figurines, sugar people, handcrafts and tasty, authentic Chinese food from different regions of China, like dim sum,” said Sun. Mooncake, a Chinese delicacy filled with a rich, thick filling typically made from red bean or lotus seed paste, will be available for people to taste. Mooncake is traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival, an important harvest festival held at the time of the autumn full moon. The Halifax Chinese Festival kicked off on Sept. 9 with an Embrace China gala held at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. The event showcased music, dance and acrobatic performances by several groups including: the National
Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater and the China National Acrobatic Troupe. To help celebrate the Chinese community’s achievements in Halifax, events were held throughout the month of September to give people the chance to learn more about everything from speaking Mandarin, to playing ping pong to Chinese cooking. As part of the festival’s Experience China Culture Series Events, The Dome nightclub will hold a Chinese theme night on Sept. 19, starting at 9 p.m. To make the festival happen, organizers came together from several community groups including: the Chinese Society of Nova Scotia, the Chinese Art and Culture Club, the Chinese

哈法迎来首届中国节 哈利法克斯中国文化节于9月9日， 在 Rebecca Cohn礼堂举行的中国侨联 “亲情中华”艺术团表演上拉开帷幕。 此次活动展示了包括中国戏曲学院、北 京歌舞剧院、中国杂技团等在内的多个 艺术团体的音乐、舞蹈和杂技表演。

A daycare with diversity ALLISON LAWLOR Future Stars Learning Centre values cultural diversity and encourages children to express themselves through song and dance. When Linda Liao opened her licensed daycare in Halifax in 2009, she didn’t set out to be the first Chinese person in the city to take that step — she did it because she loves children.
But in the nine years since then, her small, homelike daycare, Future Stars Learning Centre has become a culturally diverse place that teaches children the value of culture largely through song and dance. “We believe that children can learn from each other because of their different backgrounds and individual differences,” says Liao. “My staff and I love to educate the children about different cultures, and we encourage
them to do the same.” Liao places importance on music and creative expression. The children at Future Stars give annual concerts where they sing, dance, perform musicals and recite poems. Having the opportunity to learn some Mandarin from Liao, as well as Chinese songs and dance, the children at the centre participate in the Chinese New Year Festival and this September will perform at the Chinese Festival in Halifax.
“We place a huge emphasis on music and art,” says Liao. Born in China, Liao worked as a government accountant before immigrating to Canada in 2002 with her husband and their young daughter. Not supporters of China’s one child policy, she and her husband left behind wellpaying jobs to embark on a new life. Arriving in Halifax, Liao spoke little

Diversity daycare CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 English and knew no one except her brother who was studying at Dalhousie University. After taking English classes and working part time at a convenience store, her love of children prompted her to enrol in an early childhood education program. After graduation, she worked at the Halifax and Region Military Family Resource Centre. The experience she gained there, along with the positive feedback she received from parents and the birth to her second child in 2007, pushed her to open her own daycare. “I knew I would have my own business,” she says. Having seen daycares in China and Canada, Liao says Future Stars Learning Centre is a mix of the two cultures. While it is not uncommon to have as many as 200 children in one centre in China, Liao wanted to keep her daycare small with about 40 children. In China, daycares emphasize academic learning, she says. But in Canada, they largely focus on allowing children to learn through play. “Education is really important to me.” Every day, children at her centre do
academic learning, such as practicing letters and numbers, but the rest of the day is spent playing, learning songs and often going on field trips. Liao joins them on visits to museums, the Halifax Central Library or even on ferry rides to Dartmouth. Not the type of daycare director who stays in her office, Liao loves working with children and talking with their parents. “Everyone knows me,” says Liao. She works hard to develop long-term relationships with parents believing it leads to happier families. Her relationships have also helped to grow her daycare through word of mouth. Whether it is helping parents who are new to Canada, or those who are experiencing difficulties with their work and childcare schedules, Liao tries to be responsive to different family needs. Starting in September, Future Stars will welcome infants. Previously, the centre only provided care to children from 18 months to 12 years old. The centre will also begin offering weekend care for parents who work on Saturday or Sunday. “I really enjoy working with the parents and watching the children grow.”

Hundreds of drummers gather on Canada Day, breaking world record LU XU Riding on last year’s success, the second Canada Day Drumming Celebration took place on Barrington Street in front of the Atlantic Superstore on Sunday, July 1. More than 300 drummers came together, setting a new Guinness World Record for most nationalities in a drum circle in a single venue of a recognized orchestral piece of drumming lasting at least five minutes. The celebration took place spontaneously at nine cities across Canada.
Halifax was the only participating city in Atlantic Canada. At the square in front of the Atlantic Superstore, different nationalities beated drums with excitement as the sounds echoed in the air. Although drums were provided, some participants brought their own to the venue. The event started with a traditional dragon dance from China, followed by a Chinese dance performance. “I, too, am an immigrant and a daughter of immigrants. This inspires me as the immigration minister. This helps to connect with people because I know what it feels like to be a newcomer,”
Nova Scotia Immigration Minister Lena Diab said at a conference for the event. Diab said the event helps to celebrate the diversity in the province and “bring people together.” Richard Wong is the chairman of the National Drumming Celebration Committee. Wong flew all the way from Vancouver to Halifax to join the conference. “I really like Halifax. Vancouver and Halifax are both coastal cities and the weather in both cities is quite pleasant,” Wong said. Wong also takes an interest in Hali-
fax’s history. According to Wong, Halifax plays a significant role during the Second World War and building of the railroad. The preparation of the event was fast and solid. The organizers were able to raise thousands of dollars and gather volunteers within a month. Michael Ruan, the chairman of the local Drumming Celebration Committee, said that the successful preparation is a testament of the unity of the local Chinese communities. “The community was involved ... people donating money or volunteering their time to help,” Ruan said.

这次的击鼓活动是由来自9个城市的人 民在七月一日这一天在同一时间一起击 鼓六分钟。哈利法克斯就是这次活动的 重要的一站。更重要的是，参与者不仅 仅是我们华人同胞，还有来自不同国家 及种族的朋友们组成。活动于国庆节当 天下午三点在位于 Barrington street的 Atlantic Superstore 举行，当日晚些时 候，温哥华站确定，此次击鼓活动有来 自61个国家的人注册并参与。来自世界 各地的参与者共同打破了去年创造的 “世界上最长地理距离，最多人数，最 多民族同时击鼓”的吉尼斯世界纪录。
活动筹备及规模
击鼓活动于两点半在一段精彩的传统舞 狮表演中拉开帷幕。半小时后，300余 名鼓手和位于其他城市的鼓手们同时击 鼓。很多参与者带来了属于他们自己民 族的鼓，包括非洲手鼓和韩国 圆鼓。 “我自己也是一名移民，我的父母也是 移民。作为移民部长我倍受鼓舞,”移 民部长在演讲中提到。
“这对于大家来说是一个成为加拿大历 史一部分的绝好机会，意义非 凡。 ”Michael 阮是此次活动委员会的重要 成员。

The ‘子(son)’ symbol and its related Chinese characters QIANYI GAO The Chinese government is calling for more babies. The importance of a proper population for a community is obvious. As a series of discussing Chinese characters, today, let us talk about the ‘子(son)’ symbol and its related Chinese characters. The Chinese character ‘子(son)’ is derived from its ancient pictograph. The pictogram of the symbol is a curved cross with a box or a circle on the top that vividly highlights the characteristics of a baby’s head. As the process of evolution, this character gradually formed the one which we use today. Meantime, the character ‘子-zi-son’ is also a productive component, like the ‘people-人-ren,’ ‘woman-女-nv,’ ‘dog-犬-quan’ and ‘sun-日ri’ radical which we have previously
discussed, in case of making new symbols. Among other Chinese characters composed with ‘子-zi,’ we should first talk about the ‘孩hai’ and the ‘孺ru’ that represent ‘children.’ Actually, the spoken Chinese for ‘child’ is a two–character word ‘孩子-haizi.’ The component ‘亥’on the right simulates the laughter of a child. Although not spoken, the other Chinese character‘孺ru’also means ‘child’. As young children need people to take care of, it reflects this feature at the right side. The component ‘需’on the right means ‘need.’ The stage before a child’s birth is the mother’s ‘pregnancy-孕.’ In Oracle inscription, we can find symbols with a ‘子zi’in the human abdomen. Today, the‘子zi’is still at the lower half of this Chinese character. Regardless of the meaning today, there were other sym-
bols that meant ‘pregnancy’ and with a ‘子-zi’ component. ‘孢-bao’ is an example. It bears a ‘子’at the left side, and the right side ’包’ shows the pronunciation of this symbol: ‘bao.’ By the way, this word now no longer means pregnancy, but refers to ‘spore.’ A newborn baby is small and weak. Therefore, some characters with the ‘子’often mean ‘weak’ or ‘small.’ The word ‘孱-chan’ inscribed in a bronze vessel shows that three children scared by a strong adult. Thus, the word initially meant ‘weakness,’ and then turned to ‘inferiority’ and ‘caution.’ Another character,‘季-ji’, consists of ‘corp-禾-he’ and ‘child-子-zi,’ meaning the seedlings of the crop, and thus now means the ‘youngest’ or ‘farthest part.’ The world sometimes is dangerous and unfortunate for a child. When a family loses its father, the child’s condition is called ‘孤-gu.’ The right side of the
symbol is ‘melon 瓜-gua,’ which is explained as an metaphor of an uncared child being randomly thrown on the ground. When encountering a war, the younger generation is often in the most dangerous situation. The origin of the word ‘存save or exist’ reminds us of this fact. The left part of this character means blocking the enemy's attack; since the enemy’s attack is blocked, the child then finally is ‘existing,存-cun’ or alive. When we take a component like ‘子’as a clue to explore, we are surprised about the wit of the Chinese character creators. They described a baby’s giggles, drew pictures of scared kids and told the story of kids when the kids were in danger. They invented other means based on the pictographic method, and did all the work in the simplest way.
