Jan’s Hallmark shares their 2020 mission to “put more 'care' in the world” and why cards mean more now than ever.
A
s someone with three young kids, Eric Tschannen reads a lot of articles about how technology could impact them. He thinks technology use is a topic everyone is wrestling with today, not just parents.
"One of the more surprising trends that I read about across all ages is how lonely people are feeling," he said. A recent study found nearly half of 20,000 people surveyed said they often feel alone. "With our constant access to phones, Facebook and countless other ways to connect with each other through technology, you’d think people would feel less lonely than ever before. However, the study showed the younger, more technology-savvy, generation “Z” and Millennials scored the highest for loneliness." MM: So if people are more connected why are they feeling more lonely? ET: I think this study and others are showing the difference between being a “real friend” and a “virtual friend.” That’s really what our 2020 message of “put more care in the world” is all about. While posting “happy birthday” or “congratulations” on someone’s Facebook wall is convenient it lacks the real caring connection that people need. At Jan’s Hallmark, we focus on getting you connected with the people you care about in a meaningful way. When a “real friend” takes the time to send a heartfelt card and write a personal message it means much more than a “congrats” on their wall. If a friend is going through a difficult time, a “real friend” caring enough to ask them to lunch or hand-delivering a card with an encouraging message will give them time to be heard and connect. That will mean so much more than a “hope it gets better” message from a “virtual friend."
MM: So how can being a member at Jan’s help cure this epidemic of loneliness? ET: Well, we are committed to helping people “put more care in the world” and part of the way we are doing that is through our FREE card programs. Our offer this Valentine’s Day - from now until February 14 - is to receive a FREE mini-card with any purchase so our customers can “share the care.” After Valentine's Day, members can get a free card from our “Just Because” card line every Friday from February 21 through June 26. The “Just Because” line is full of messages that help you celebrate and support all of those everyday life moments. Members also get a coupon for a free card with every 10 cards they purchase through the year. Another recent study found that over 80 percent of people considered a handwritten note more meaningful than a digital correspondence. And to the youngest generations - “Z” and Millennials - written correspondence was even more meaningful than the average. So with our free card program, we will help support thousands more caring messages going into the world. Jan’s membership can help our customers connect more with the ones they love in a meaningful way. MM: That sounds like a great reason to be a member at Jan’s Hallmark! ET: And that’s just the start of what our free rewards membership offers. We have member specials throughout the entire year. I’d love to talk more about rewards, but right now it’s time to start making our locally famous chocolate-covered strawberries. We will be making them locally and delivering them fresh on February 12-14! erve this decadent dessert with fresh fruit such as bananas, strawberries and pineapple plus marchmallows, walnuts or pecans, angle food cake bites, cookies - anything goes when dipping it in chocolate!

ORGANIZE YOUR HOME With A Garage Or Closet Remodel
I
nterestingly, the garage is generally the most under-utilized space in the home. Although it’s an extension of the home - and is the dumping ground for everything that doesn’t fit in the house – it’s important to have a plan for garage storage that can help organize the entire home. When the holiday’s roll around and the sports seasons change, the home can be ready no matter what time of the year. A Tailored Living garage organization specialist will help maximize garage storage space with custom garage cabinets and wall storage solutions tailored to the client’s particular activities. “Won’t it be nice to find exactly what you’re looking for when you need it,” said Rich McQuay, owner of Tailored Living of West and St. Charles, Mo. “I guarantee you will wonder how you ever overlooked this valuable, extra garage storage space."
Custom Closets
Not all closets are created equal. Throughout the home, there are undoubtedly several types of closets: walkin, reachin, utility, easilyaccessible and “why-is this-even-here space?” Closet space is valuable in any home and, generally, no one believes they have enough. Tailored Living’s designers can help maximize closet storage space throughout your home with custom closet systems. “Whether in the bedroom, family room or entryway, the company guarantees there is more space than you realize with our custom storage solutions,” McQuay said. “ We can help you unclutter and organize for more efficient, stress-free living with custom closet systems.” Call (636) 728-0333 to schedule a free in-home consultation and 3D design. Tailoredliving.com and RAKcoatings.com.
Using a combination of garage cabinets, shelves or Slatwall wall storage systems, overhead racks and custom garage flooring, the garage will be transformed into a masterpiece of utility and beauty, making garage organization a part of everyday life. Custom garage cabinets give a clean, uniform look to your garage. Cabinets bring order out of chaos by hiding everything behind closed doors. Clutter and piles are eliminated and there’s a designated place for every item in the garage. Open wall storage is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels and hoses that create a safety hazard if stacked on the floor. But no garage design is truly complete without new garage flooring. Untreated, dull concrete will not only detract from beautiful new cabinets, it’s harder to keep clean, tends to hold moisture and cold, and is ergonomically at odds with knees and backs. Tailored Living has a wide range of options for garage flooring to add that finishing touch. Marketplace Magazine | Winter Issue 2020 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 13

The Jacob Family
I
Expands Their Horizons Again
n December 1977, James D. Jacob (Jake) and his eldest son, James Jr. (Bud), co-founded the Jacob Co. when the two of them realized that “if we run a home improvement company on two simple principles we can be very successful: First, we have to really ‘care’ for our customers and listen to their wishes and second, we must simply do what we say we are going to do.”
After the bath division success, the two brothers decided to take another direction. “Growth by acquisition!” They wanted to find and purchase a company that fit the Jacob model of a family atmosphere, longevity, quality of products and reputation with solid financial stability. The perfect fit came along when he met with Tom Chesley of Chesley Fence.
Father and son quickly set their plan into motion and became known as the largest wholesale seamless guttering company in the St Louis Metro region running as many as 10 seamless guttering trucks a day. This changed when Bud Jacob decided to leave the company to pursue other interests. He sold his share to his father in 1994 and his younger brother, Scott Jacob, took the reins as President of Jacob.
In 2013, Scott and Bud Jacob purchased Chesley Fence owned by Tom and Patty Chesley for 47 years – the two still work with Chesley Fence and Deck. The second acquisition in 2015 was an asset purchase of Daech and Bauer Roofing and Remodeling.
Scott Jacob had plans of his own and took the company in a different direction. His vision was to change Jacob from the wholesale sub-contract side of the industry to the retail side and compete against the larger remodeling companies in the region. This move created a new face for the company and by the year 2000, Jacob had solidified itself as an innovative leader in the home improvement industry with national recognition as an elite remodeler in several product lines. The company endured a difficult change in 2001 when Jake passed away after a long battle with cancer. He left behind a family business that to this day still believes in the values they started with in 1977. In 2006, Bud came back to Jacob full time. Bud’s return gave his brother, Scott, the time needed to work on growing the company. Scott looked at various products and ideas before finding the right fit and Jacob Showers and Baths was created as a division of Jacob.
This year in April, Jacob is opening a second showroom in Fenton at 1707 Gilsinn Road. The family broke ground in November of 2019 (pictured at right), the foundation is in and walls are going up! Jacob is still locally family owned and operated. They specialize in home improvements such as windows, replacement bathtubs, walk in showers, walk in bathtubs, sunrooms and more! High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again
or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.
Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.
Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specialize in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.
Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.
Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading causae of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.
"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

A New Year Brings New Opportunities For Better Health Use Delicious Spices To Replace Sodium In Your Diet
Y
our spice drawer is a treasure chest of zippy, zesty, sweet, savory and spicy flavors. One of the best qualities of herbs and spices is the variety of flavors you can add to foods without adding salt. Here’s a how-to guide on the flavor profiles of common spices and how to season with them.
Basil
• Tastes somewhat sweet, earthy. • Delicious Pairings: Any Italian food like meatless lasagna or pasta with red sauce; Thai food like a stir fry with lots of veggies and sprinkled with peanuts; fruit like berries, peaches or apricots • Extra Tip: Add dried to dish at least 15 minutes before they are done cooking for full flavor. Add fresh right before serving to avoid flavor loss or wilting.
Curry Powder
• Is a blend of spices usually including coriander, fenugreek, turmeric, cumin and others. • Delicious Pairings: Indian food like lentil potato stew; breakfast veggie and egg scramble; whole grains like brown rice or quinoa with cilantro; and tuna with celery and no-added sugar low-fat yogurt for a delicious sandwich • Extra Tip: Some curry powder can be hot and spicy. If you prefer a milder one (or a hotter one) look up a recipe online and make your own mix from spices in your spice drawer.
Cumin
• Tastes toasty and earthy with a little spice. • Delicious Pairings: Mexican food like black bean salsa or refried beans; fish such as tilapia, especially in fish tacos; and root vegetables • Extra Tip: Cumin is also part of the Indian spice mix garam masala. Delicious when paired with coriander in Mexican or Indian food.
Rosemary
• Tastes woody. • Delicious Pairings: Roasted meats like chicken, pork, lamb or salmon; mushrooms, raw or cooked; whole grain bread; and butternut squash or pumpkin • Extra Tip: Long sticks of fresh rosemary can be used to brush marinades on meat or as a skewer stick for grilled kabobs.
Smoked Paprika
• Tastes smoky and woody. • Delicious Pairings: Egg dishes; spice rubs for meats or even tofu; in fruit salsas like mango; and tomato sauce • Extra Tip: Use it to add the smokiness of bacon to any dish without the extra fat or salt.
Thyme
• Tastes earthy. • Delicious Pairings: Any bean dish; blends well with bay leaves, parsley or lemon zest; and roasted vegetables • Extra Tip: Lightly crush dried leaves between your fingers when adding to a dish to release the flavor.
Cinnamon
• Tastes sweet and spicy. • Delicious Pairings: Whole grain muffins, waffles, pancakes or breads; and fruit crisps with oatmeal topping. Greek meat dishes like lamb or beef stew with oregano and onions • Extra Tip: The natural sweetness means you can cut the amount of sugar in some recipes. Courtesy of the American Heart Association.

Hope For Struggling Students In The New Year According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a Developmental Optometrist in Troy, “When a child sees 20/20, that means they can see a certain size letter on an eye chart at a distance of 20 feet, but that’s all it means. There are over 20 visual skills required for reading and learning besides being able to see the eye chart. If your child has any of the above symptoms, you should schedule your child to see a Developmental Optometrist.”
Once vision problems are diagnosed and treated, reading and learning are no longer a struggle. Homework gets done quickly and without battles. Start the new year off right. Schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation today: bring hope to your family’s new year.
P
arents and caregivers take heart, homework battles and report card frustrations could be a thing of the past. Finding out if your child struggles from a vision related learning problem will bring you hope in the new year.
For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit UngerEyecare.com .
Researchers estimate that 1 out of 4 children have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with their ability to learn. Many of these children have been told their vision is 20/20 leaving parents struggling, trying to cope and searching for answers for their child’s problems. It is vital for parents and educators to know the signs that indicate vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties:
• Headaches when reading • Slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • Avoidance of reading • Covers one eye when reading • Poor reading comprehension • Frequent loss of place while reading • Complains words move on the page • Short attention span • Smart in everything but school • Labeled ADD, ADHD, Dyslexic • Working below potential
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?
• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?
• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%
correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.
