The fantasy world of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft inspired Connesson’s “Celephais.” James Agee’s poem depicting a summer evening in a sleepy southern town personally resonated with Barber — the combination of Agee’s words and Barber’s music is pure magic. Grimaud’s thoughtful and tenderly expressive music making will ignite our emotions. Following the Brahms, explore Franck’s Symphony in D minor. INFLUENCES FROM SPAIN AND LATIN AMERICA Juanjo Mena Conducts Javier Perianes Piano HAYDN Symphony No. 44 in E minor, “Trauer-Symphonie” RAVEL Concerto in G Major for Piano and Orchestra GINASTERA Variaciones Concertantes DEBUSSY “Ibéria”, No. 2 from Images Two of Spain’s most beloved exports – distinguished conductor Juanjo Mena and soloist Javier Perianes – take the stage to celebrate Spanish and Latin contributions to classical music. Haydn’s highly dramatic “Trauer Symphony” opens the program followed by Ravel’s Concerto in G with jazz and Basque folk music influences. Then, Alberto Ginastera, one of the most innovative Latin composers of the 20th century, amplifies the voice of Argentinian folk music in Variaciones Concertantes. Followed by Debussy’s “Ibéria” which clearly invokes the Spanish fascination that became so popular in late 19th century France.

The lesser-known, but no less deserving, Julia Perry and the great Clara Schumann and Louise Farrenc were highly educated and internationally trained musicians. These talented women helped pave the way for female artists, like our soloist Lise de la Salle, whose playing inspired the Washington Post to write, “For much of the concert, the audience had to remember to breathe… the exhilaration didn’t let up for a second until her hands came off the keyboard.”

Music Director Fabio Luisi has been eager to conduct Verdi’s Requiem since he began his tenure with the DSO. With its white-hot moments of bravado alternating with some of the most serene moments of Verdi’s music, his Requiem is a monumental work. The orchestra, chorus and virtuosic soloists tell a story filled with whirlwind emotions moving through profound loss, terror and anger, and ending with a sense of eternal peace. The work is the musical setting of a Catholic Mass, written in memory of Italian poet, philosopher and novelist, Alessandro Manzoni and first performed in San Marco church in Milan.

This concert includes two magnificent works by composers seeking redemption. Korngold wrote his lyrical and cinematic Violin Concerto, which embraced both his Viennese upbringing and his full-blooded romantic style as a Hollywood composer. Concertmaster Alexander Kerr (Michael L. Rosenberg Chair) will be the soloist. At great personal risk, Shostakovich presented his stunning Fifth Symphony in the face of Soviet censorship. At the time, criticism was life-threatening, not merely career-threatening, which explains why Shostakovich withheld his exploratory Fourth Symphony (being performed later in the season) and composed instead the Fifth to please the regime. BRAHMS SYMPHONY NO. 3 Fabio Luisi Conducts BRAHMS Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90 Although Brahms was just 50 when he wrote his Third Symphony, he looked back to younger days with the musical quotation of the motto Frei aber froh (“Free but happy”). In the rising exclamation from the winds that open this great symphony, the F-A-F motif hits you immediately. The compactness of the work intensifies the dramatic aspects of his third and penultimate symphony. As you listen to this richly romantic piece, you get a real sense that Brahms had hit his stride as a composer.

This quote sums up the program for this weekend. From the World Premiere by Katherine Balch, who captures the magic of everyday sounds, to the dazzling orchestration and rhythmic creativity on display in Polovtsian Dances, to Stravinsky’s groundbreaking Rite of Spring, arguably one of the most influential pieces of music of the 20th century, rhythm, pulse, experimentation and excitement play a critical role in all three pieces on this program.

Music became essential — it expressed the ideas and feelings of a people that otherwise had no voice. Yet the Fourth Symphony was withdrawn, lay dormant and unperformed, for 25 years after its completion. This bold, brilliant score now recognized as the composer’s “credo” will be an enormous presentation of full orchestra on the DSO stage.

©Sylvia Elzafon

This weekend, Fabio Luisi and the DSO bring out one of the first works in which Beethoven takes on the heroic ideal, shaking his fist at the world, with his Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by pianist Francecso Piemontesi. We journey from the youthful optimism of Brahms’s First Piano Concerto (performed earlier in the season) to his Fourth Symphony, filled with grandeur as he presents his final essay in symphonic form. Yet, like all great tragedies, the Fourth is cathartic which might explain the popularity of his dark, troubling last symphonic work. To open, DSO’s Composer-in-Residence Angélica Negrón offers the world premiere of her work for voice and orchestra, with Canadian Columbian singer, curator and interdisciplinary artist Lido Pimienta, describing the maternal spirit and the weight of caring for family and home.

ORFF Catulli Carmina ORFF Carmina Burana Arguably, the most iconic choral work of the 20th century, Carmina Burana’s unforgettable opening, “O Fortuna,” has become a pop culture phenomenon. Based on medieval German poetry, Carmina Burana has it all: rhythmic and brooding choruses, lusty drinking songs, ballads cursing fickle lovers and gleaming paeans to love. Many may not have heard the Catulli Carmina, one of the two sequels Orff wrote to Carmina Burana, but, in a rare pairing, you will get to hear them both performed together with our four critically acclaimed soloists, the Dallas Symphony Chorus, the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas and the DSO.

Jaime Martín takes us on a tour of Hungarian music from the original rockstar, Franz Liszt, to the modern avant-garde genius of György Ligeti, whose 100th anniversary of his birth we celebrate in 2023. George Li, an ultra-virtuosic pianist, takes center stage in the Liszt with blazing octaves, intricate ornamental figurations and arpeggios running up and down the entire keyboard. Then, Bartók allows the virtuosity of each section of the orchestra to shine in his most popular orchestral work.

Long-time DSO collaborator Pinchas Zukerman, DSO Artistic & Principal Education Partner, will curate and play-direct two intimate chamber music concerts featuring members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and faculty and students from the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU.
