FORTE
FALL 2016
In our Fall Issue, we wanted to evoke a strong, sophisticated feeling with a little bit of a boss attitude. Boss means completing an action with authority and finesse and Forte means doing something that one excels at. In our Forte issue, we showcase different forms of success and this boss attitude. Each editor has interpreted and developed his or her own meaning of Forte, creating an issue that has gone above and beyond any other. We have featured several bosses from the divas of Divine, Oregon State University’s very own all women A Capella group featured in our Around the Area editorial to Benny’s donuts, a recent Oregon State graduate student who has already created a widely successful donut company featured in our Men’s editorial. We used many different lens when exploring the concept Forte. It can mean a literal interpretation of a boss or a spread can have the attitude, essence and authority of a boss. We have several editorials I am excited about that blend these qualities, such as the executive shoot, Award Tour.

DAMchic for several years. She is very dedicated and talented. I have every confidence in her ability to be great in everything she does!
One shoot I am particularly excited about is Power Play. For this concept we partnered with Heartland Humane Society. We paired each dog and kitten with his or her luxurious alter ego. These little critters are all up for adoption and obviously all come with a little attitude. Please call (541) 757-9000 if you are interested in adoption. This was a great opportunity to reach out to our Corvallis community and have some fun with beautiful gowns, suits and our furry friends!
A big thank you to everyone involved with DAMchic this year and who participated in getting us where we are now with Orange Media Network. Forte will be our first issue printed and distributed around campus!
The theme of this issue is very fitting for my last issue as Editor in Chief! It encourages all of us to dig deep and find our inner strength and boss to pursue what we love. As I step down to focus on a creative role in the magazine and finish my double degrees, I know our readers are in good hands! Taking over is Victoria Robbie. She has been involved with

Smaller, but No Less Powerful.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu proves that even when smaller and weaker, you can still defend yourself against a larger, stronger, heavier opponent with proper technique. Committed. Empowered. Confident. All good things to live by, and all things training with Jujitsu can help you instill. Plus, never underestimate the power of a good workout. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg (add it to your back to school reading list to kick into gear this fall) shares that “typically, people who exercise, start eating better and become more productive at work. They smoke less and show more patience with colleagues and family. They use their credit cards less
frequently and say they feel less stressed. Exercise is a keystone habit that triggers widespread change.” Looking for a way to revamp your motivation, save more money or maybe just eat healthier? Exercise is a great start. Jujitsu can be an even better one. On top of an all-body workout, you won’t find any better mind therapy than trying to figure your way out of your opponent’s half-guard. A new and exciting sport that teaches you grit, the value of hard work while also giving you some sweet self defense skills sounds like a win win. Checkout Rise Martial Arts or other studios in town if you feel like being as fierce as this spread.

This fall, it’s all about paving your own pathway to success in standout threads with exquisite accents. Pair the right materials and patterns with an A+ attitude and you’re already on your way to becoming your own boss. Read on to learn all about local startup king Benny Augeri to learn all about how he’s taking Corvallis by storm - in style. Benjamin “Benny” Augeri may have majored in Earth Sciences, but his true passions lie in a recipe involving good times, good friends, and a lot of fried dough. Operating out of an obscure kitchen in downtown Corvallis is Benny’s Donuts, a local donut shop created and led by an Oregon State alum with a love for all things sweet and happy. Wearing deep jewel-toned hues and a unique mix of luxe fabrics and classic PNW twists, Augeri resembled the perfect image of a young entrepreneur: fun, fearless, and ready for anything. When Augeri realized that there weren’t any donut shops in Corvallis, he knew that he needed to do something about it.,
He using his family’s own tried-and-true recipe as a launching point. “I decided I could and would start a donut shop in Corvallis, hoping that everyone else would think these donuts were just as delicious,” he said. “The name ‘Benny’s Donuts’ fit my name and it fit the town as well.” Of course, starting and running a company entirely on your own is hard to do. With the help of some friends, Augeri was able to form a startup team made in donut heaven. Jake Phelps, who has a knack for the culinary side of things, was introduced to Benny by a mutual friend. “Our friend paired us up as he knew I wanted to start the donut shop, and Jake loved to cook,” began Augeri, adjusting the collar on his favorite closet item -- a bright and festive plaid peacoat. “We both saw this as a good opportunity.” Phelps is now the head of operations in the bakery. Augeri reminisced about where the magic all began nearly two years ago. “We started baking in my garage in February of 2015. We would make donuts and sharecontinued on pg. 30

them with our friends as taste testers,” he said. “By September, we knew we had the perfect donut recipe - a mix of modern ingredients paired with my family’s recipe.” As soon as the ball got rolling, there was no turning back for Augeri and his team. “I was graduating in December, and sure didn’t want to move back to Ohio to work with my dad,” Augeri laughed. “So I leapt forward and soft launched on January 12, 2016!” Alongside developing his own unique sense of style, Augeri is always working to innovate the creative styles and flavors that help his donuts stand out. “We have our old-fashioned flavors that won’t change, everyone loves a really tasty old-fashioned donut,” said Augeri. “The unique, Oregonian themed, local flavors come from the whole group brainstorming and innovating in the bakery. It is awesome to see what everyone comes up with.” pg. 30
So, what comes next for Benny’s Donuts? Augeri is happy with the team’s accomplishments so far, but there are definitely some short and long term goals for the crew on the horizon. From becoming a bigger part of OSU and increasing wholesale to neighboring towns, to expanding to multiple brick and mortar locations and developing a mobile app, where they are today is just the start. Running the shop is a lot of work for Augeri and his friends, but to them it is all definitely worth it. “An entrepreneur works 60-120 hours a week, but most of the time I don’t really notice it because I am doing something I love,” said Augeri. When asked about what advice he has for students and other young entrepreneurs looking to start their own businesses, Augeri had just two words: “Do it.”

Heartland Humane Society is the Corvallis animal shelter that strives to both find permanent homes for their fuzzy companions and educate the community on humane treatment of animals. HHS cares for over one thousand animals each year as they find the animals proper home placements, and a few of their long-term residents have decided to become like a boss and push the boundaries into becoming Oregon’s next top models. All animals featured in DAMchic Magazine are available for adoption as of June, 2016.

Speaking of well-versed ladies we were lucky enough to be able to spend time with Oregon State University’s premiere femake A capella group, Divine. The singers starting in 2003 the group was conducted by Dr. Tina Bull and within a year they were established as a premiere a capella group. The girls were hand selected because of their love of music and stayed together because of the bonds they created over time. Spending the whole day together they talked about how they pushed each other in their music careers and also school. One member shared how she had

never previously beat-boxed, but the girls switched her role and now she could not see herself in any other spot. During the photo-shoot the girls sang some of the songs they had been rehearsing and all of us were blown away by their talent. A special thank you to Portland Center Stage for working us into your extremely busy schedule and the ladies of Divine for being so gracious.
