EMBODY
WINTER 2017
Letter from the Editor In Embody, we focused on all the parts that come together to create the human body and experience. We went beyond what we would normally think of as “the body and looked at how everything is connected to create the human form in its perfection. When we decided on our theme for the Winter 2017 issue, Embody, I fell in love with it and it is my personal favorite so far. I have to admit I was a bit nervous about the theme. It was something, that taken at surface level, could be controversial and with a whole new team of editors I was unsure how they would run with it. The goal was to be able to produce a magazine with varying layers of depth and I think the editors nailed it. While some editorials can be taken as they appear, other require a bit more thought when looking at them. What a journey this year has been and we are not even half way through it. Fall was definitely a term of growth and adjustment as we redeveloped our image in our new environment. We have been working hard to develop a publication that all students can enjoy and can look to for daily inspiration. A big part of that has been the relaunch of our website, Orangemedianetwork.

I am super proud of what my staff was able to accomplish this term. There were only a few returning members this year which would have normally set us back but everyone stepped up. We were able to produce a magazine in less time than we ever have before, and I am excited to see how you experience it.
Check out Orangemedianetwork.com/damchic for extended content from all our editorials.
com/damchic. I am thankful that we were able to join Orange Media Network. Being able to work in such a stimulating and creative environment with other members of campus media has pushed us to be better and allowed us to excel beyond anything we could have accomplished alone.

Lucy McRae: Linking Science to Creation By: Megan Bryant Photographer: Brigette Medeghini
Skin, liquids, futurism, and light are only a few words to describe the artistic perspective of Lucy McRae, a director, innovative artist and selfproclaimed body architect. She has done projects for several magazines including “American Vogue”, music videos for musicians; advertisements for skin care companies, exhibitions and more. The curious mind of McRae led her to discover art that can arise from studying technology in collaboration with the human body. Many of this artist’s works embody adaptability, femininity and voluminous imagination. When dealing with the human body, it is hard to envision it a different way than most have already seen it. McRae interprets the body as being something to manipulate, which reveals a completely new perspective to her viewers. Some of her projects such as “Make Your Maker”, “Swallowable Parfum Lab”, and “Morphe” use the idea of body morphing that people are already aware of, or as we like to call it, plastic surgery. Many of the materials used in these pieces are gelatins, liquids and plastics, which we see in figure enhancing procedures. In the “American Vogue Shoot”, McRae glorifies the beauty regimen of women, with their hair, skin and anatomy. A glowing silhouette of balloons tugging at skin tight nylon, only bulging in areas to reveal desired larger body parts is just one way the artist creates an image to imitate our societies youth embracing cosmetic surgery. The intriguing thing about her art structures is that she views these changes as beautiful and unique. McRae captures the character of her artwork by attaching abnormal shapes and forms to her models. One of her pieces includes a mass that looks like natural gas enveloping the model. The blurred line between the edge of the human body
and the environment around the human body is one of the many concepts that possess McRae’s artwork. She bridges the gap between natural and artificial body forms. Her creation “Swallowable Parfum” is an emergence of biology and technology wanting to go back to the human body’s primal stage but in a technologically advanced world. A cosmetic capsule ingested in the body reacts by secreting a colorfully enhanced odor through perspiration. It is an exemplification of the body reacting naturally to a fabricated specimen. The simplest of human features can create unexpected outcomes. Every day conversations and experiences drive McRae’s imagination to create these impeccably outrageous art structures. Each of her projects do not hold the same theme yet illustrate the same purpose; evolution. Lucy McCrae’s unusual artwork opens our minds to endless possibilities of how technology can become one with the human anatomy. We continue to advance along with the technology being built. Artists and innovators such as McRae show us that there is no barrier to what can be created within ourselves.
