Trip Overview On this trip, we will base ourselves in Beachport for the first three nights, before finishing in Nelson. The trip concludes in Nelson Day 1 will explore the section of the Limestone Coast between Beachport and Robe through Little Dip Conservation Park.

Day 2 will explore the section of coast between Southend and Carpenter Rocks through Canunda National Park. After we finish exploring the Limestone Coast, on Day 3, we shall journey from Beachport to Nelson via Mount Gambier, allowing us to explore local geological sites including –

• Blue Lake • Umpherston Sinkhole

• Piccaninnie Ponds • Princess Margaret Rose Cave

(Currently closed for maintenance [26 July 2021])

The tidal forecast has the tide being low for most of the daylight during the days chosen for this trip. This is important, as on the beach sections, the driving line is between the low and high tide marks.

Driving on beaches

The beaches are only accessible during the summer months between Dec and April. This is because the strong southerly winds and waves between May and Nov often batter the beaches, making them impassable. During the warmer months, the sand can become very dry , loose, and deep. Prior experience with driving on sand will be beneficial.

Recovery & Safety No matter one’s 4wheeling experience, when driving on sand, one is bound to get bogged at some point. Suitable recovery gear for sand is therefore a must. These include

• Shovel • Rated shackles • Bridal • Snatch strap • Rear recovery hitch/points • Accessible front recovery points

• Recovery boards (optional) • Air-bag jack (optional) • Jack plate to help prevent vehicle jack from sinking into the sand

5W UHF (handheld / vehicle mounted) and a sand flag securely mounted onto the vehicle are mandatory 3
