Spiral is a buying agency and design consultancy specialising in home furnishings in India. Based in London and New Delhi. They span all home categories, from textiles to furniture, decorative accessories to lighting.
My role consisted of producing 3D CAD concept visuals and technical drawings for homeware accessories and furniture design briefs to later present to clients.
Mora and Samson are examples of projects worked upon during the placement year that have made it into production and available to buy on the Made.com website.

Bathroom range inspired from exsiting strip bracket design. The collection used this strip aspect throughout the whole range. All concepts were produced on SolidWorks and presented to clients.

Slouch Slouch is a product that has your posture in mind. A desk sculpture designed to increase the conscious effort of good posture whilst raising the awareness of how you’re sitting whilst working from home or in the office.
Brief Design a product to improve the conscious effort of improving sitting posture and reminding remote workers about the importance of timed breaks in order to reduce their sustained sitting time.
Modern day living has essentially lead to a sedentary lifestyle with us spending more and more time sitting. With an average of 12 hours a day being spent sitting down. Our bodies are designed to move and it is this prolonged sitting that causes health issues.

The primary and secondary research was formulated to ensure the narrative of the product was coherent. The research journey was narrowed down to a speicifc
recommended time frame of sitting in one go before moving around
of those working in an office job report experiencing musculoskeletal pain, predominantly as low back pain
is the amount of time adults spend of our waking hours in a seated postion at work per day.

Taking advantage of modern technology, these models were produced using the CNC machine with chemi wood. As well as rapid prototyping ; 3D printing in an ABS material , more realistic to the weight of mahogany than chemi wood.
Slouch went through a vigorous ideation of concepts phase; progressignly into the prototyping and testing of concepts. Model development allowed Slouch to significantly adapt to a functioning and beautiful looking product.
The final form. Using the gear system I could manually rotate the body to perform that the job of the servo motor.
Slouch is a product that has your posture in mind. A desk sculpture designed to increase the conscious effort of good posture whilst raising the awareness of how you’re sitting whilst working from home or in the office.
The product operates through a timed cog motor mechanism that gradually re-positions the human like figure to appear as if they’re “slouching over” with the full cycle taking place over a 30-minute period. The user will be visually aware of this and would act as a reminder to check or re-adjust their current sitting position.
For those in desk jobs, the sedentary lifestyle has become familiar. Our bodies are not designed to be seated for the period of time they’re sat during a typical day – such as working. Recognising the problems this lifestyle brings and the impact sustained sitting has on the human anatomy is why Slouch aims to be a prevention for these concerns with reminders to users to check and re-adjust their sitting positions on a frequent basis to reduce the period of time sat in poor positions, such as slouching.
When in action, Slouch should be positioned in peripheral view to that of the user.
The body of slouch will gradually “slouch over” during a 30 minute period. Throughout that time, the user shall notice slouch within their eyeline and recognise the meaning of Slouch.
Signifying the conscious effort of good posture whilst working, to re-adjusting their current sitting positions or to stretch off.

Packaging & Marketing of Slouch follows a minimal design. The logo is representative of the design of the product with a logo that is suggestive of what the product does. Within the packaging the product fits into cut out moulds to hold the individual product components.
An Instruction Manual is included with the product to assist in set up for the user to have a clearer understanding on how Slouch operates.

Scatter Scatter is a lighting system designed to move. Functioning as a table light that offers three break-away portable lights for indoor and outdoor personal and social requirements.
All portable lights offer soft illumination to areas in need to match the desired moods and atmospheres of a user.
To design a mains table light that offers break-away ambient lighting to be re-positioned around the home. Assisting in transforming spaces and creating an atmosphere both indoors and outdoors for personal and social use.

The importance of creating prototypes of concepts to test the sizing and practicality of each component. Most Models were produced using rapid prototyping ; 3D Printers.
Prototyping the wireless charging holders that the portable lights will slide and sit securely on.
Testing the sizing and form of the portable lights and how the shade disperses light .
Constructing the base and charging station for correct sizing and ease of function for when in use.
Scatter as the name suggests is a light system designed with the purpose to disperse. Scatter operates as a table light and wireless charging station to multiple portable lights.
Each portable light provides soft illumination to indoor and outdoor areas to transform a space and create an atmosphere to how an individual desires. The various uses of Scatter is endless, such as being used for social gatherings and entertaining friends indoors and outdoors or for personal use of relaxing in low levels of light.
When the individual portability aspect of Scatter is not required, it still functions as a table light offering various lighting settings and forms of light to be used within the home to provide a function or set a mood, such as in the living room. Just know that Scatter will ironically be ready to be scattered around the home for when its called upon.
Each portable light offers a dimming option of low, medum and high intesity of warm white light. This can allow you to alter the ambience to meet your surroundingd and match the mood of intended purpose.
The battery life of the portable light depends on the intensity its being used at. However, the calculations suggest a minimum of 5.1 hours functioning at full power. This is more than sufficient for a portable use of a lighting system.

Scatter displays a minimal packaging approach; showcasing a product visual, brand logo and product description. A Trifold leaflet provides information on how to use scatter with minimal visuals and diagrams.
Scatter offers individual items to be purchased as well as the complete set- charging stand with three portable lights.

Otto Otto is a space saving piece of furniture. Offering a solo seat presence that can transform into a duo seating arrangement when required for accomodating guests.
The design of Otto aids conversation through an innovative design and sharing personal spaces with others.
To design a product for the young, mobile, urban dweller of the 21st century to accomodate and entertain guests without the use of a tv whilst being space saving.
Entertainment Challenge - the user hosting gatherings of 3+ people.
For the city dweller, accomodating guests in a small space living environment can be a challenge. With urban areas predicted to be a hotspot to live by 2050 and living rooms decreasing in size by 32%. Space saving furniture is considered the way forward.

Otto consists of a beach wood four-leg frame that holds a leather velvet cylindrical cushion within. The cushion comes in two parts which is attached through a zipper and material. This allows Otto to transform into two seats whilst remaining as one product to easily assemble and disassemble when required.
Otto saves the need for other items of seating; space saving. As well as offering easy stacking due to the simplicity of shape and design when the product is not being used. Otto does aid conversation through the close contact of seating pushing chats to occur.

Getting comfortable learning technology is what the elderly currently lack in. With over 51% of people aged 75 + living alone the importance of being able to use mobile technology is how the elderly stay connected with friends and family.

Pocket is an elderly friendly virtual assistant mobile device that helps to connect the elderly with modern society. The timeless design should be easy to understand and follow with minimal interactivty for the elderly to acknowledge.
Simply ask Pocket what feature you want and it will be done. Pocket offers reminders for appointments, meetings and visits in the calendar. The ability to chat with friends and family through message and phone calls. Plus, the inclusion of group chats to stay in touch with everyone.
Pocket can be used as a handheld device when needed out of the house or as a home hub wehn within the home located in a room of choice. This amplifies the speaker system as well as acting as a wireless charging system for the portable voice assistant device.
