New Orleans Burgers Project: NOB Restaurant Location: Pefki , Athens, Greece Architectural Design and Supervision: Sofroni Danae, Antonia Sotiropoulou Status: Completed 2014 Link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ DioArchitects/249548258574210

“New Orleans Burgers” is an independent, quick-serve restaurant concept that offers a unique burger menu in an environment with an upscale vibe. During the process of understanding the client, we deduced the direction towards a modern version of the classic american style diner. The original style diner is narrow and elongated. In the traditional diner floorplan, a service counter dominates the interior, with a preparation area against the back wall and floor-mounted stools for the customers in front. There is a row of booths against the wall opposite to the counter. The space layout, determined by the elongated geometry of the premises, suggested itself, a similar approach. Therefore, just a few feet passed the entry hall, the sidebar was treated as a large desk/counter where the menu is ‘’printed’’ on a concrete wall. Meanwhile in the rear dining area, the guests are to be accommodated according to the classic seating arrangement of a train: On double opposite seats facing each other across from a table. The dining area is covered by an independent wooden installation that reminds us of a train wagon and suggests a friendly and welcoming environment.

The alternation of texture: tile and concrete, metal, wood and white leather and the vintage green and yellow ‘diner’ colours, stand out against the clean sobriety of a deep gray background. This neutral envelope of darkened ceilings and walls, is dotted with industrial-looking lamps.

Karamuza Cocktail Bar Project: Karamuza Bar Location: Maroussi, Athens, Greece Architectural Design and Supervision: Sofroni Danae, Antonia Sotiropoulou Status: Completed 2012 Link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ DioArchitects/249548258574210

Dioarchitects’ goal was to create a 60m2, American style, with an urban feel coffee shop/cocktail bar/deli that allowed a relaxed environment for people to enjoy their free time but also a meeting point for the neighboorhoods residents. Dioachitects created a cozy but chic overall style with a touch of the industrial feel while using reclaimed materials for an environmentally friendly approach. The corner position of the shop asked for an industrial style glass fassade with big openings, that makes the boundaries between indoor and public space less obvious and allows people to feel like being on the neighboorhoods square. This eco-friendly project is completed with wooden shipping pallets to create interesting decoration and furnishings, while plasteboards are avoided, leaving the ventilations and structures bare. For the convenience of the consumer, but also in a view of the eco aspects, seats and tables were made of old shipping pallets, coffee sacks and bobbins. The pallets and the coffee sacks also remind us of the journey that coffee beans take from where they are grown to our delight.

Furthermore, the bar and the wooden deck are made from reused wood from concrete forms and all the metal structures are made by scraps of old selving. The garden’s physical expression is not polished, but rather appears to be quickly and randomly gathered together, a mixture of bobbin and shipping pallet furniture.

MASTER THESIS

Type: Master Thesis Location: Nisyros, Greece Collaboration: Sofroni Danae, Artemis Korkokiou Supervisor: Prof.Dr.-Ing. Thekla Schulz- Brize Axel Schuhmann M.A., M.Sc. Host: Technische Universität Berlin, DE Year: 2017 Link: http://issuu.com/dan_sof/docs/master_thesis

Traditional architecture in Dodecanes :

The village Emporios in Nisyros

Abstract The theme of this Master Thesis is the analysis of the traditional architecture of the settlement Emporios on the island of Nisyros in the Aegean Sea. Due to the original condition in which the settlement has remained until today, an excellent opportunity for research is offered. At the beginning of the study, we provide a description of the island and its history in order to give the reader a clear picture of this particular place. This is followed by a detailed analysis of Emporios as well as a thorough research and description of the building elements used in the settlement. In addition, certain houses were selected as characteristic examples and examined in more detail. The aim of this Master Thesis is through the example of the Emporios settlement on Nisyros, the Greek folk architecture in the Aegean to introduce and promote the traditional construction practices and the use of natural materials.

Urban agricultural and research park in Votanikos

Diploma Thesis

“Urban Agricultural and research park in the area of Votanikos

Type: Thesis Project Location: Athens Collaboration: Alex Papaspyros, Sofroni Danae, Antonia Sotiropoulou Supervisor: S. Stavridis, A. Papaioannou Host: Ntua School of Architecture Year: 2013 Link: http://issuu.com/dan_sof/docs/

The subject of our Diploma project is creating a model urban agricultural park, in Votanikos area. Our park provides agricultural education both in theory and in practice. It also includes specialized uses of agricultural and botanical nature. Our proposal offers a positive alternative to the gentrification of the area, while respecting its historical course and geographical capabilities, as opposed to purely commercial existing scenarios.

Our plot is located on an intersection of conflicting land uses. On the one side there is residence and the Agricultural University with land uses of agriculture, park , education and science, and on the other side there is a load of unwanted uses (transport, industry, abandonment). The diversity of the premises that surround the plot reflect the problems of Eleonas. As a result there is an introversion tendency by the Agriculture University , which leads to isolation and degradation of the area. Hazardous scenarios are being proposed, such as the construction of the Stadium of PAO, shopping centers and office buildings. Such proposals do not pose any potential for creating a liveable residential area. Our proposal opposes this commercial development and adds a new place of interest in Attica while enhancing the green network. Our park in cooperation with the Agricultural University could be a bridge for expansion and spread of healthy activities from the center of Athens to the unexploited Eleonas region. Crucial for the design was the connection of the Agricultural University to the city and neighborhood . We use the dynamics of the plot, its shape and position to make it function as a “ connector “, expanding the activities of the Agricultural University, while giving a positive scenario for the area . To achieve this union, the park must “flow” and its form should be organic and liquid. There is a central path of movement coinciding with the diagonal of the plot, which connects the neighborhood and the Agricultural University (local and supra-local connection). On either sides of the main path, four pieces of land for agriculture are being distinguished, which include the use of education and practice.

Using ellipsoidal forms, which result from lines connecting the entrances of the park and the urban tissue,we design four pieces of arable land. Then, by smaller oval shapes that intersect with these plots, the boundaries of the park are formed. On these intersections one can encounter endemic herbs. The trees promote harmony and continuity between human habitation and the natural world and consist a vertical and horizontal barrier to pollution . We also propose a pedestrianization of Sidirokastrou Str. and Amfipoleos Str. for a smooth transition from the neighborhood to the park. These streets are of very low traffic. To create open and semi-open spaces, we use wooden shelters, which sometimes coincide with the natural boundaries, following the movement of the park. At the junction of Amphipoleos and Ag.Polycarpou Street, where there is also a small neighborhood center, we place the main entrance. A flea market can be organized freely on the main axis of the park. The market can be combined with the eko-festivals so to contribute to the local and supra-local nature of the park. The built premises ‘’flow’’ and emphasize the main movement. There is a gradience of publicity from the main entrance to the point where we connect with the Agricultural University, from the most public uses to the more exquisite ones. Buildings are placed under the wooden shelters so that they connect with semi-open spaces.

Depending on the nature of the buildings, we separate them into two groups with different architectural vocabulary. The public uses are housed in lightweight wooden structures with view to the landscape and their entrances face the main path. The scientific buildings, because of their specificity and the stringency of their standards, correspond to strict lines and solid materials. They are covered in spots from the soil of the hills to symbolize stability and the importance of the preservation of seeds and plants. They are made of reinforced concrete with small openings and special conditions of temperature and ventilation. On the main path, the buildings are located as follows: The first building we see is a small grocery addressed directly to the neighborhood and an info point with information on the activities of the park. Then there is a restaurant with view on the lake, while on the opposite is the library and herbarium, which are arranged around a central square, the core of the park. The last building we see is the Seed Bank, which is also the end of our journey. In each of the four pieces of agricultural land there is a corresponding laboratory. The simple form and construction symbolizes the stability of human activity.

_Conclusion

Nowadays, architecture is limited to follow the requirements imposed by the economic use and the consumerism. It creates independent spaces, unrelated to the environment, which disregard the public space and seek introspection. These spaces, not only don’t include the public space in their operation but also create an artificial experience of public space for the economical benefit. It is a transfer from the historical and cultural environment of the city to the uniformed, standardized and globalized culture of advertising, image and consumerism. The shopping center is an element of the consumer society, it expresses the concepts of the new western civilization and it promotes new standards of behavior and everyday life. As part of the modern society, it listens to the needs of the individual, it maximizes them, it promises their satisfaction and it creates new ones so that the individual becomes committed to eternal demand. The aim of this assignment is to explore the model of the shopping center and the imitation of public space within it. These new kind of public spaces, which exist under strict conditions of supervision, control and protection, are a new reality in the city suburbs. The transfer of public life from the public space of the city to these artificial spaces is a new form of socialization which aims to create new generations of consumers under the new promoted standards. In this way, the new model of living disorients the public role of the individual.

Potamos, Kythira: Morphological Analysis of a Traditional Settlement Type: Case Study Course: Analysis of Traditional Buildings and Complexes Collaboration: Artemis Korkokiou, Sofroni Danae Supervisors: Giannitsaris, I. Tsouras Host: NTUA School of Architecture Year : 2008

Potamos is the largest village of the island Kythira. Historically speaking it is the most important village as this is where the island’s most crucial events took place. Kythira was a crossroads of merchants, sailors, and conquerors. As such, it has had a long and varied history and has been influenced by many civilisations and cultures. This is reflected in its architecture (a blend of traditional, Aegean and Venetian elements), as well as the traditions and customs, influenced by centuries of coexistence of the Greek, Venetian, and Ottoman cultures.
