Design of a housing complex in the dence city center Provision of space for communal living Exploration of the cooperation of public, semi-public, communal and private space
National Technical University of Athens School of Architecture July 2012 Partner: Ioanna Lioliou
Designing
in the (full of public life) neighbor-
hood of
a student residence complex in the dense urban tissue of the center of
Athens,
Exarhia and close to urban activity landmarks, the main subject and aim of the design proposal is the coexistence of
private and communal living spaces with others for open, public and semi-public use, without the one outweighing the other.
For this reason, a linear passage throughout the plot, penetrates the building complex, combined with a central patio. Ground and first floor receive semi-public uses (restaurant, play area, book-lending library, reading room, public bathrooms). In the patio, shaped like an open-air, adjustable amphitheater, the high partition to the adjacent building is maintained as a potential projection surface.
At
a level of integration into the densely built city block, the different building heights and typological characteristics of
“Andrea Metaxa” str. (urban traffic) and “Mani’s” (pedestrian street) are taken into account, along with the specific character of the neighboring buildings, the axes and the recesses of their facades.
Likewise, the design of the internal open spaces
conforms almost diagrammatically to the basic invariants of the adjacent buildings (staircases, voids), locating open spaces in front of them.

From the NW edge of the plot to the foothills lies the lowland area, which stands in direct relation to the developing city of Acharnes, due to their altitudinal similarity and the extensive road network surrounding it. The whole area is characterized by small inclinations that converge towards the (filled with debris nowadays) small stream which traverse it centrally. that this area will eventually connect with the city of by the stream and an urban green zone around it.

diagram. plot analysis based on the dynamics between the two heroins
In the same way that the successive situations during the play appear seemingly familiar, already experienced or properly structured, while their coherence comes foreign, likewise the space should aspire the same contradictory sense.
Each individual sce-
nographic element gives the impression of already known, or even personal, in a present or a past tense, while no consistency and logical coexistence can be found, as heterogeneous elements cause conflicting feelings.
Essentially,
space produces
contradictions and doubts, deriving from the spectator’s social dipoles, in time (theatrical plot) and space.
- sense of imprisonment, of deadlock, of lack of escape
- sense of familiarity of the scenografical urban surrounding, heavily loaded with collective memory
-
first degree of contradiction between the inner scenographical space and
the surroundings, as the story is placed in the public sphere, transporting the house-confined issues to the public.
-
second degree, internal contradiction.
As
the storyline revolves around the
more delinquent, behind-the-scenes processes of human society and psychology, the text is transcribed into its corresponding space, a dirty and repulsive one, into a corresponding social

FROM THE (COLLECTIVE) BATH TO THE (PRIVATE) BATHROOM: The transition from sociabilityto self-coercion and retrenchment
National Technical University of Athens School of Architecture July 2015
Nowadays, body care, body cleansing and grooming are processes highly personal and private; processes that are restricted not only to the secluded space of the domicile, but to the even more isolated area of the domestic bathroom. In the modern way of life, the detraction of these activities from the
“foreign”,
or the common awareness, their self-evident yet invisible character, has resulted being one of their inherent characteristics. The space and practice of the bath, however, as well as the very content of physical purity, as perceived today, are conditions that only evolutionarily result in their present (and most probably not final) form.
Seeking,
through the history of the bath, for the origins of these contemporary
perceptions
of individual and private bathing, of physical cleanliness and its importance, of the body and the social existence, one discovers that the history of the bath diverges early on from the physical body-water relationship, body cleansing and direct enjoyment.
The
bath acquires symbolic notions and becomes part of
a history of cleanliness, a history of morality, of formative beliefs and social formation.
The
study of the
history of the bath is essentially a study of exhibits and, as such, it unveils latent social processes, political and social stakes, social norms and standards, imaginary constructions of every era, and, consequently, the formative beliefs that compose human civilization.
This happens mainly because the space and the act of
the bath reveal two dominant social points of reference
(through
defined): the limits of socialized life and the limits of the body.
which both are themselves originally
Finally, the bath, the cleanliness, the hygiene,
as conceived today, are coherent social structures-outcomes of political, economic, ideological and moral wars and victories.
Likewise,
the logic of the private bathroom, the shame of the naked body, the
