“I have visited the center in East Garfield Park twice. First when we cut the ribbon for its grand opening two years ago, and then to celebrate its expansion this past Spring, and I can see firsthand the impact [Above and Beyond] has on people who are trying desperately to get their lives back together, deal with their addictions, and overcome their addiction and live healthy fulfilling lives. - Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago

A MODEL FOR SUCCESS “The Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center is unique in the American (indeed the world) addiction treatment universe for these reasons: it serves an inner city population most often ignored by the private treatment industry; it offers clients true choice from its “vestibule” menu including both SMART Recovery and AA options; while it is built on the best evidence-based cognitive behavior and rational emotive (CBT/REBT), non-disease-based therapy techniques, supporting both abstinence and harm reduction goals. In short, Above and Beyond is a modern treatment miracle in a field badly in need of one. Thank goodness we are here to see its appearance in the midst of a field marked for a half century or more by its rigidity and disrespect for people with addiction problems.” Dr. Stanton Peele, PsyD
“I was blown away by Above and Beyond. I have been a licensed clinical psychologist for over 3 decades, and I have worked in public, private, academic and governmental settings, and I have treated individuals and families, managed and researched clinical care, and I am quite familiar with the challenges of treating mental illness, substance abuse, family issues, and legal concerns. It is a daunting challenge… While no easy task. Many have tried. Most fail. However, A&B is such a success that it has established the benchmark of what can be done. Clients don’t fit models of care, at A&B models fit the client. They have cracked the code. They transform lives and thus save lives. A&B changes the world, one person at a time.” Dr. Chris Stout, Founder of the Center for Global Initiatives

SUPPORT PROGRAMS 12-Step Meetings are based on the 12-step recovery process right out of the Big Book. It is for those ready to lay down their fight and declare “powerlessness”. S.M.A.R.T Recovery (Self Management And Recovery Training) is a self-empowerment program for anyone trying to regain the “powerfulness” of their own choices and experiences. Women For Sobriety Since July 1976, WFS has been a national self-help program for women alcoholics that helps achieve sobriety and sustain ongoing recovery. REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) focuses on the cognitive elements of disturbance. Changing a core irrational belief can cause profound improvements emotionally and behaviorally. REBT is based on the belief that biological tendencies, environmental conditions and social conditions can contribute to emotional disturbances. Art Therapy is a form of therapy that uses expression and a creative process to improve a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. It’s a fun way for our clients to express themselves nonverbally. Our Street Yoga brings certified trauma yoga instruction to the people who need it the most. No wardrobe is necessary and mats are provided.
SUCCESS-BASED SERVICES Trauma Rooting out and addressing Trauma is a centerpiece of our programs. Over half the individuals seeking Substance Abuse Disorder treatment meet criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with some survey censuses indicating up to 85%. This means that if we treat Substance Abuse without addressing its underlying cause, we are only treating the symptoms of what’s wrong. Our groups and individual Trauma sessions are exceptional and healing. Housing Our “Housing First” model is built on evidence that the success of sustainable, long-term recovery is bolstered when our clients are housed and employed. Our Housing program offers our clients full-time case management services that assist in choosing from Chicago’s array of appropriate options. We are deeply committed to our mission of preparing our clients for a promising transition to a new life in a healthy environment. Employment Anyone can participate in our proprietary life skill building and job readiness curriculum, and we envision this service to be critical in preparing our clients for a productive and rewarding job search. Included in our esteem-building curriculum are workshops in resume and cover letter preparation, as well as mock interviews which are recorded for training. Innovative Modalities At Above and Beyond we do not believe in one-size-fits-all and have embraced some of the most powerful alternative programs available anywhere, such as: Acupunture, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique or “tapping”), Life Skills, Logotherapy, and a unique Spiritual Group. Our Women For Sobriety group is selfstanding and open to all. By expertly shepherding the pieces of our clients’ shattered former lives, we’re able to help them build new ones full of hope, reintegration and, most of all, meaning.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
ABOVE AND BEYOND Above and Beyond has many needs, and your support of our mission and vision is gratefully accepted. • Volunteer your time to help those of us with substance abuse disorders, using our unique Vestibule approach. • Provide gifts-in-kind, such as professional services, supplies and materials, used vans or buses, and other goods that can be valued and deducted at year end as GIK to a 501c3. • Financial support, which will enable us to serve the many clients who walk in off the street in need of substance abuse programming, life skills, and support. • Community support, including helping us spread the word among community leaders, activists and other advocates who can embrace our mission. • Partnerships and alliances with other community-based resources, agencies and organizations that have a complementary mission to ours. • Referrals from those in your community, and from other treatment centers that cannot provide services to the uninsured and neediest among us who are still suffering. 2942 W.
