A meeting point between nature photography and popularisation, in which photography becomes a functional tool for both communication and dissemination of information: where communication of scientific knowledge supports the message that is strongly promoted through imagery.

A collaboration between Pietro Formis and Emilio Mancuso, coauthor of the text and a member of the Institute for Studies on the Sea, President of Verdeacqua, diving instructor and passionate about photography, travel and communication with the world.

WWF Travel consultant for the sea sector, always working with the aim of sharing knowledge, awareness and a passion for the sea.

Since 1996 the Institute for Studies on the Sea (I.S.M) has worked in the field of communication with the dissemination of information, both scientific and naturalistic .

In designing and implementing its projects, I.S.M utilises the collaboration and support of research institutions, researchers and university professors, popularisers and technicians. Particular attention is paid to maintaining the high profile of its initiatives, ensuring the scientific rigor of all materials produced with constant updates in line with research in related sciences.

I.S.M has dozens of initiatives aimed at the general public to its credit, such as theoretical and practical courses, events, exhibitions and published materials.

In particular, practical courses in marine biology strongly characterise the work of I.S.M – which is the only nation - wide organisation to offer training opportunities entirely carried out in marine locations or at sea – these are designed for the diving public, in particular, but also offer wider scope for marine enthusiasts and lovers of the sea.

An objective that ISM aims to achieve through its practical courses is to provide tourism with a new ways to travel and to learn about the marine environment, raising consciousness among divers and all the ‘users’ of the sea by promoting a greater awareness of the underwater world .

Moreover, thanks to the collaboration of tour operators specialized in diving tourism, I.S.M organizes trips to the most fascinating diving destinations on our planet, drawing on the knowledge of biological communities and of the culture of the sea. www.verdeacqua.org

INTRODUZIONE

Un libro dedicato all’acqua, fonte di vita, madre di tutte le creature del pianeta.

Un viaggio attraverso le forme, i colori, le luci e i comportamenti delle creature d’acqua, dai mari tropicali, dal Mar Rosso fino al Mediterraneo, uno sguardo sul futuro incerto degli oceani e del nostro pianeta.

La luce fonte di energia per l’ecosistema e creatrice di spettacolari giochi.

L’oscurità e le sue creature misteriose.

I colori, codici di comunicazione di un mondo complesso e meraviglioso.

Le forme, forgiate dall’evoluzione e declinate in una varietà indescrivibile di soluzioni funzionali.

Le maschere antropomorfe di esseri apparentemente mostruosi ma incredibilmente affascinanti.

La vita e la morte, strettamente legate: l’investimento della specie per il proprio futuro; dalle cure parentali che genitori determinati dedicano alla prole, fino al sacrificio estremo dell’individuo che dona la sua vita per la nuova generazione.

La predazione, regola universale del mondo della natura, mangiare ed essere mangiati.

La sopravvivenza: sopravvivere e adattarsi al predatore più avido, cinico e determinato, l’uomo. Animale tra gli animali, predatore tra i predatori, che ha dimenticato il punto di equilibrio con l’ambiente in cui vive.

Le immagini raccolte in questo libro sono il frutto di centinaia di ore trascorse “sul campo”.

Sono tutte scattate in acqua con l’utilizzo di scafandri subacquei, alcune facecendo immersioni con bombole e autorespiratore, altre facendo snorkeling.

Nessuna immagine è realizzata in acquario o ambiente artificiale.

Una buona parte proviene da aree per me di grande valore dove mi immergo abitualmente da anni: Capo Noli nel Mar Ligure; Puerto Galera nelle Filippine; e il Mar Rosso egiziano.

INTRODUCTION

A book dedicated to water, the source of all life and mother of every creature on the planet.

This is a journey through light, shapes, colours, and the behaviour of aquatic creatures - from tropical seas, to the Red Sea and the Mediterranean - an examination of the uncertain future of the oceans and of our planet.

Light, source of energy for the ecosystem and the creator of spectacular effects.

Darkness and its mysterious creatures.

Colours and communication codes of a complex and wonderful world.

Shapes, forged by evolution, illustrated in an almost indescribable variety of functional solutions.

Anthropomorphic masks of seemingly monstrous but incredibly fascinating beings.

Life and death, closely linked: the investment of a species in its own future; from the parental care that some parents dedicate to their offspring, to the extreme sacrifice of the individual that gives up its life for the new generation.

Predation, universal law of the natural world - eat and be eaten.

Survival: surviving and adapting to the most greedy, cynical and determined predator of all – man. An animal among animals, predator among predators, that has forgotten the purpose of equilibrium with the environment in which it lives.

The images collected in this book are the result of hundreds of hours spent “in the field”.

They are all made in water using underwater camera housings, some by scuba diving and others taken when snorkelling.

No image is made in an aquarium or in any artificial environment.

A good proportion of these come from areas of great personal importance to me where I have been diving for years: Capo Noli in the Ligurian Sea; Puerto Galera in the Philippines; the Egyptian Red Sea. Visto e piaciuto.

Una sintesi perfetta anche se scarna, ma questo è stato il mio pensiero più immediato dopo aver sfogliato questo libro sullo schermo del computer.

Non è la stessa cosa che tenerlo tra le mani, sentirne la sostanza, gustare il profumo della carta e voltare le pagine soffermandomi sulle foto, ma è un piacere che sto solo rimandando in attesa che il pdf preliminare sia dato alle stampe e diventi quello che state leggendo.

In un panorama editoriale subacqueo sempre più scarno, “AQUA, misteri del mondo sommerso”, il libro di Pietro, ha anche il pregio di riportare un po’ di mare tra gli scaffali delle librerie offrendoci l’occasione per un magnifico ed avvincente viaggio le cui tappe sono scandite da immagini che sembrano ripercorrere i giorni della creazione: la luce e il buio, colori e forme, i cosiddetti mostri (perché tali non sono), vita e morte e, infine, l’uomo al quale il pianeta fu affidato perché lo custodisse e non già perché lo distruggesse come purtroppo sta accadendo. È un libro fotografico, frutto del lungo lavoro e di tante immersioni nei mari del mondo dove Pietro Formis si è spinto alla ricerca di quello scatto che ancora non aveva o di cui aveva un facsimile di cui non era soddisfatto. Ma questa è la maledizione insita nell’essere fotografo, una sorta di sindrome del dottor Faust, che porta a tuffarsi nell’universo acqua in attesa del momento in cui occhio e mente diventano un tutt’uno con la macchina fotografica e un dito preme il pulsante di scatto mentre l’inconscio trasmette il comando finale “Attimo, sei così bello, fermati!” Che sia così lo si coglie nelle immagini scelte per comporre questo libro sia per i soggetti, mai banali e ripetitivi come è giusto che sia per un fotografo che ha un suo stile, sia per le inquadrature e i colori. Tra questi ultimi sono stato colpito da come Pietro tratta la gamma dei blu da cui riesce a distillare tonalità di una morbidezza unica, quasi eteree, della stessa consistenza dei veli delle divinità del mare.

Ma non ci sono soltanto soggetti e colori. Ogni fotografia è anche una storia e questi scatti, unici perché il tempo è quello e non ritorna, raccontano il divenire della vita, animata da quell’energia splendida attraverso la quale tutto si crea e tutto diventa noi compresi. E ogni foto ferma un momento nel tempo e nello spazio, un istante infinitesimo nella vita del mare che ci porta a riflettere a chiederci, senza poterci rispondere, che cosa c’era un attimo prima e cosa potrebbe essere successo l’attimo dopo aggiungendo fascinazione al fascino. E nelle sue foto o almeno in una io ho sentito anche la musica, uno dei suoni di cui il mare è ricco, le cui note potrebbero essere scritte nelle righe del pentagramma tracciato dai raggi della pinna dorsale del pesce S. Pietro (un omaggio dell’autore a sé stesso?) che trovate a pag. 37 e i cui occhi sembrano contemplare queste linee come meditando una possibile melodia.

Questo libro così ricco ha un’ulteriore particolarità, a me cara per la mia storia di scrittore, e cioè di nascere dalla collaborazione di Pietro con Emilio Mancuso, un biologo marino che ben conosco e che si è fatto conquistare dalla fotografia nella quale mette il suo sapere di mare e magari qualche cosa che gli ho trasmesso e che, in particolare, gli ho affidato perché si deve restituire ciò che ci è stato donato.

A questa coppia i miei più sinceri auguri di altri viaggi letterari in tandem. Ci saranno? Io ne sono sicuro.

Seen and liked.

A perfect synthesis even if brief - but this was only my most immediate thought after browsing this book on the computer screen. It is not the same thing as holding it in your hands, feeling the substance, relishing the scent of the paper and turning the pages, lingering over the photos, but it is a pleasure that I am just putting off whilst waiting for the preliminary pdf to be printed and to become what you are reading. In an increasingly scanty underwater publishing scene, Pietro’s book “AQUA, mysteries of the underwater world“, has the further merit of bringing something of the sea back to the shelves of bookshops. It offers us the opportunity for a journey, both magnificent and thrilling whose stages are marked by images that seem to retrace the days of their creation.

We find light and darkness, colours and shapes, the so-called monsters (that in reality are not), life and death and, finally, humankind to whom the planet was entrusted as guardian, rather than destroyer as is happening now.

It is a photographic book, the result of lengthy effort and of the many dives in the seas of the world where Pietro Formis went in search of that shot that he still did not have…or of which he had a something with which he was unsatisfied. For this is the curse inherent in being a photographer, a sort of Dr. Faustus’ syndrome, which leads to diving into the universe of water and waiting for the moment when the eye and mind become one with the camera. A finger presses the shutter button whilst the unconscious transmits the final command “Stop for just a moment - you are so beautiful!” This is captured in the images chosen to make up this book where the subjects, are never banal and repetitive – as it is only right for a photographer who has his own style, both for the composition and the colours. Among the latter, I was struck by how Pietro treats the range of blues from which he succeeds in distilling shades of a unique, almost ethereal softness, having the same consistency as the veils of the sea gods.

However, there are not only subjects and colours. Every photograph is also a story and these shots are unique as they record a moment which does not return [because time is unidirectional and it does not return]: they tell the story of life, animated by that splendid energy through which everything is created and everything exists - ourselves included. Each photograph captures a moment in time and space, an infinitesimal instant in the life of the sea that leads us to reflect and question ourselves, without being able to provide an answer… Was there a moment before this and what could have happened in the next moment, adding fascination to charm?

In his photos (or at least in one) I have also heard music, one of the sounds of which the sea is rich, whose notes could be written in the lines of the pentagram drawn by the rays of the dorsal fin of the John Dory fish, in italian called “Pesce San Pietro” (a tribute from the author to himself?) that you find on page 37 and whose eyes seem to contemplate these lines as if they meditate upon a possible melody. Such a rich book has another fascination, dear to me in my history as a writer, that of Pietro’s collaboration with Emilio Mancuso, a marine biologist whom I know well. He has conquered photography into which he puts his knowledge of the sea and maybe something I have passed on to him (and which I have entrusted to him) because we must give back what was given to us. To these two people, my most sincere wishes for other combined literary journeys. Will there be more? I’m sure there will be.

Energia per l’ecosistema Opere d’arte per i nostri occhi La luce è la protagonista delle immagini di questo primo capitolo.

Protagonista dal punto di vista fotografico ed estetico, ma anche spunto di riflessione sugli aspetti biologici legati al suo ruolo negli ecosistemi, luce quindi come fonte di energia che alimenta la vita.

Nelle grotte del Mar Rosso, passando dalle spaccature, crea giochi intermittenti; allestisce architetture, “quinte di luce” che danno la sensazione di trovarsi tra le colonne di una cattedrale celestiale Riflessa sulla sabbia chiara disegna le sagome di decine di stenelle che rientrano nella loro baia quando il sole è ancora alto, e si colora di arancio, mentre il buio avvolge gli abitanti del reef al tramonto. È la luce, che passa attraverso le acque limpide del mar Mediterraneo, a regalargli quel colore così celeste. “Un giorno, quasi per caso, mi sono trovato in un posto magico: una grotta semi sommersa in Sardegna. Voltandomi indietro verso l’ingresso sono rimasto colpito dalle forme perfette disegnate dalla luce: un caldo raggio di sole colpisce l’entrata della grotta mentre il cielo è limpido ed il mare cristallino. Tutto è così naturale semplice e perfetto, il mare in una goccia.”

La luce è energia che alimenta le fondamenta degli ecosistemi. Dalle alghe alle piante marine come la posidonia, alle minuscole zooxantelle, alghe unicellulari che vivono anche in simbiosi con le madrepore e contribuiscono in maniera sostanziale al loro sostentamento e quindi allo sviluppo del reef.

L’alternanza tra zone di luce e di ombra crea ambienti diversificati dal punto di vista biologico.Nei mari tropicali le zone più assolate sono di solito il territorio dei coralli duri (madrepore) mentre quelle più in ombra ed in profondità di quelli molli (alcionacei) e delle gorgonie.

Nel mar mediterraneo in modo simile, le pareti assolate sono ricche di piante, alghe e spugne dalle tonalità verdastre, mentre le zone più adombrate sono ricche di coralligeno, coloratissime, dal giallo delle margherite di mare (Parazoanthus axinellae), al magenta delle gorgonie (Parimuricea clavata) al rosso del corallo (Coralium rubrum).

Chi ha avuto esperienza di immersioni subacquee saprà sicuramente che scendendo in profondità l’acqua assorbe in maniera selettiva l’energia della luce e le sue tonalità calde e restituendoci un mondo blu quasi privo di colori.

Questi colori per essere osservati, devono quindi essere “ripristinati” con l’utilizzo di torce o flash subacquei, dove questi sono scomparsi al nostro occhio.

Questo è un aspetto magico della fotografia subacquea: portare in profondità la luce artificiale che ci permette di ammirare scenari e colori che i nostri occhi non sono in grado di vedere naturalmente. Scenari che, a dire il vero, gli abitanti del mare vedono in maniera diversa da noi; le tonalità di rosso per esempio che noi percepiamo alla luce delle torce sono, a molti organismi marini totalmente sconosciute. Per contro l’occhio umano non sarà mai in grado di osservare

ciò che invece possono alcuni animali, percependo come buio totale l’ambiente in cui molte creature vedono con naturalezza. Dal punto di vista fotografico la valorizzazione della luce ambiente è sicuramente un aspetto sostanziale.

Talvolta è proprio grazie all’illuminazione naturale che una scena appare così spettacolare e magica. La luce stessa attraversando l’acqua ci rivela informazioni dal punto di vista naturalistico dell’ambiente circostante. Possiamo intuire, guardando una fotografia, che l’acqua sia torbida e ricca di plancton,quando tende al colore verde, mentre è più limpida e cristallina quando vicina al blu intenso. Oppure indovinare l’ora del giorno dall’inclinazione dei raggi del sole che attraversano la superficie.

NUTRIRSI DI LU E Abbiamo solo accennato all’importanza che la luce ha in qualità di fonte energetica (essa stessa è un fenomeno, un’illusione, dovuta alla capacità dei nostri occhi di tradurre delle onde elettromagnetiche, quindi energia, in segnali elettrici interpretati dal nostro cervello). La quasi totalità della vita su questo pianeta si è sviluppata su un “semplice meccanismo”: grazie alla luce, alghe e piante trasformano, attraverso la fotosintesi clorofilliana, i sali minerali e anidride carbonica in sostanza organica; in cibo che alimenta gli erbivori che alimentano i carnivori fino ai predatori al vertice della catena alimentare.

In assenza di luce non avremmo balene, orche e squali, senza di lei la vita come la conosciamo non esisterebbe.

In mancanza di quest’energia i reef tropicali, come siamo abituati a vederli, non potrebbero donarci la loro bellezza. Infatti il mattone costituente di qualsiasi barriera e scogliera “corallina” (che dovremmo sempre chiamare madreporica) è l’ancestrale simbiosi tra le zooxantelle e alcuni organismi che oggi conosciamo come madrepore ermatipiche, sclerattinie, i cosiddetti “coralli duri”. Queste microalghe, che vivono anche nel plancton, trovano dimora nel corpo dei piccoli polipi che formano i coralli duri.

La struttura totalmente trasparente dei polipi permette alla luce di raggiungere le zooxantelle, le quali prendono i sali minerali e l’anidride carbonica direttamente dal corpo dei polipi procurandosi quindi tutto il necessario per la fotosintesi. Il risultato è soddisfacente per entrambi: grazie alla fotosintesi le zooxantelle forniscono gran parte dei nutrimenti necessari ai polipi togliendo contemporaneamente l’anidride carbonica che scioglierebbe le strutture calcificate dei coralli duri. La luce ha permesso questa preziosissima simbiosi, consentendo l’evoluzione di quello che oggi conosciamo come l’ecosistema più eterogeneo del pianeta: la scogliera madreporica, il “coral reef”.

Energy for the ecosystem Works of art for our eyes Light is the protagonist in the images of this first chapter.

It acts as the protagonist both from the photographic and from an aesthetic point of view: it also provides a starting point for reflecting on the biological aspects linked to light’s role in ecosystems – that is light as a source of energy that powers life.

In the caves of the Red Sea, or when passing through cracks, it creates a transient play of light and shadows; setting up structures through “light scenes” that give the feeling of being within the columns of a heavenly cathedral.

It enters via gaps in the rock and crosses the fresh and greenish waters of a submerged canyon, it draws sharp blades in continuous movement within the penumbra. Reflected on light sand, light draws the outlines of dozens of dolphins falling into a bay when the sun is still high, and turns orange, while darkness envelops the inhabitants of the reef at sunset.

It is light, passing through the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea that gives it that light blue hue… “One day, almost by accident, I found myself in a magical place: a semi-submerged cave in Sardinia. Turning back to the entrance, I was struck by the perfect shapes drawn by the light: a warm ray of sunshine hits the entrance to the cave while the sky is clear and the sea is crystal clear. Everything is so natural, simple and perfect, the sea encapsulated in a drop.“ Light is energy, the form of energy that feeds the foundations of ecosystems; from algae to marine plants such as the sea grass to tiny zooxanthellae, unicellular algae that also live in symbiosis with the corals, contributing substantially to their sustenance and therefore to the development of the reef.

The alternation between areas of light and shade creates environments that are diverse from a biological point of view. In tropical seas, the sunniest areas are usually the territory of hard corals (madrepores) while those in the shade (or at greater depth) are the soft corals (alkionaceans) and sea fans.

In a similar way in the Mediterranean Sea, the sunlit, submerged rock walls are rich in plants, algae and sponges with greenish tones, while the most shaded areas are rich in the coralligenous - highly colourful organisms, from the yellow of the sea daisies (Parazoanthus axinellae), to the magenta of the gorgonians (Parimuricea clavata) and the red of the coral (Coralium rubrum).

Those who have had scuba diving experience will know well that, by going deep into the water, the wavelengths of light are selectively absorbed with its warmer tones (longer wavelengths) removed leaving a blue world almost devoid of colour.

To be observed properly, these colours…must therefore be “recreated” by using underwater torches or flashes which restore colouring where these have disappeared from our vision.

A magical aspect of underwater photography involves using artificial lighting that allows us to see scenes and colours that our eyes are not able to discern naturally – scenarios which, to tell the truth, the inhabitants of the sea visualise quite differently from us. For example, the shades of red that we perceive in the light of the torches are totally unknown to many marine organisms. On the other hand, the human eye will never be able to observe what some animals can, perceiving the environment in which some creatures see naturally as being in total darkness.

From a photographic point of view then, the enhancement of ambient light is an important aspect.

Sometimes, a scene appears truly spectacular thanks to natural lighting. From a naturalistic point of view, light travelling through water can reveal information about the surrounding environment. We can deduce, for example, just by looking at a photograph, that the water is turbid and rich in plankton when it tends to green, while it appears more limpid and crystal clear when close to deep blue. Furthermore, we can guess the time of day through the inclination of the sun’s rays that enter via the water surface,

NOURIS MENT T ROUG LIG T So far, we have just mentioned the importance of light as a source of energy. In itself light is a phenomenon, an illusion thanks to the ability of our eyes to receive and translate electromagnetic waves (and thus energy), into tiny electrical signals that are interpreted by our brains creating vision.

Almost all life on this planet has developed based upon on a “simple mechanism”: thanks to light, algae and higher plants transform carbon dioxide and mineral salts into organic substances, through the medium of photosynthesis (in the presence of chlorophyll). They become the foodstuffs that feed herbivores and, in turn, these are the food of carnivores and finally those predators at the top of the food chain.

In the absence of light we would not have whales, orcas and sharks: without it life, as we know it, would not exist.

In the absence of this energy the tropical reefs could not dazzle us with their beauty in the way we are used to seeing them. In fact, the building brick of any barrier and reef “coral” (which should corectly be called madreporica) is the ancestral symbiosis between the zooxanthellae and some organisms that today we know as hermatipic madrepores, scleractinie - the socalled “hard corals”. These microalgae (which also live within plankton), make their home in the bodies of the small polyps that form hard corals. The totally transparent structure of these polyps allows light to reach the zooxanthellae, which are then able to take mineral salts and carbon dioxide directly from the body of the polyps, thus obtaining everything necessary for photosynthesis.

The end result is satisfactory for both of them: thanks to photosynthesis, zooxanthellae supply most of the nourishment necessary for polyps, simultaneously removing the carbon dioxide that would dissolve the calcified structures of hard corals. Light has facilitated this precious symbiosis, allowing the evolution of what we now know as the madreporic reef - the “coral reef” - the most heterogeneous ecosystem on planet earth.

Le tenebre degli abissi Uno sguardo alle creature della notte, misteriose ed insolite L’oscurità, quella fugace delle tenebre della notte, giù fino agli abissi popolati da creature fantastiche. La notte è il regno dei diversi, nascosti nell’ombra durante il giorno, escono allo scoperto con il calare del sole.

Dagli anfratti, da sotto i sassi spunta una moltitudine di piccoli organismi, ben nascosti durante il giorno. È il loro momento, sia per cacciare, accoppiarsi o deporre le uova, rendendo la vita notturna sotto la superficie dell’acqua, tutt’altro che monotona.

Scopriremo così tutti quegli animali invisibili di giorno, ma anche quelli che di notte si lasciano stranamente avvicinare e come per magia ci regalano una confidenza inaspettata. Le strategie abituali degli abitanti del giorno sono ribaltate: non è più la luce blu ad avvolgere ogni cosa, ma l’oscurità e il nero; le regole della sopravvivenza, quindi, cambiano radicalmente.

Le livree appariscenti dei pesci diurni diventano più tenui e il colore rosso, che sotto la luce del sole attira l’attenzione di notte invece aiuta a nascondersi.

La notte è il tempo degli invertebrati e in Mediterraneo, così come nei mari tropicali, i cefalopodi sono tra i grandi protagonisti.

La polpessa (Callistoctopus macropus), che non è la femmina del polpo come si potrebbe pensare dal nome comune, bensì una specie diversa con abitudini prettamente notturne, si aggira alla ricerca di crostacei e molluschi di cui cibarsi.

Si crede protetta dalla notte, ma è nella notte che le murene vanno a caccia e può così capitare che, per scampare all’attacco, debba sacrificare un tentacolo che poi ricrescerà.

I calamari, invece, risalgono dalle profondità marine per deporre le loro uova vicino alla costa; le seppie si nascondono nella sabbia alla ricerca di qualche piccola preda da catturare.

Con un po’ di fortuna possiamo incontrare uno dei pesci più incantevoli del Mar Mediterraneo. Il pesce San Pietro, (Zeus faber) riconoscibile per la sua bellissima livrea argentata con screziature gialle e le sue pinne dorsali e pettorali allungate a forma di ventaglio. Può catturare le prede estrudendo la sua strana bocca e inghiottendole in un boccone. Questo pesce è visibile spesso anche di giorno, ma è solo di notte che si avvicina ai subacquei, come rapito da un incantesimo, fino a sfiorarli per poi allontanarsi; ripetendo più volte questa sinuosa danza.

Un pesce leone (Pterois miles) spunta da dietro una stella gorgone, le immersioni notturne sono caratterizzate dalla presenza talvolta invadente ed aggressiva di questi pesci che approfittano delle luci dei subac uei per cacciare.

Alcuni pesci tropicali, invece, come il pesce leone (Pterois miles) approfittano per cacciare piccoli pesci attratti dalla luce delle torce dei subacquei, ed è proprio grazie all’irresistibile attrazione per questa luce artificiale che ho avuto la fortuna di ritrarne uno in un situazione particolare: “Ero a pochi metri di profondità durante un’immersione notturna in una tranquilla baia vicino ad Hurgada, in Egitto e riuscivo a scorgere il bagliore della luna e delle luci della barca sopra di me che illuminavano fievolmente il fondale di sabbia bianca, su cui si intravedevano formazioni coralline.

Stavo cercando d’immortalare questa stupenda atmosfera quando un bellissimo pesce leone sbucò da dietro una stella gorgone proprio mentre mi preparavo a scattare, regalandomi così un’immagine speciale.”

L’oscurità inoltre, crea l’occasione giusta per incontrare la regina della notte del Mediterraneo: la meravigliosa Alicia mirabilis. Un’attinia o anemone di mare che di giorno è quasi invisibile e poco appariscente ma di notte si svela in tutta la sua magnificenza. Estende il suo corpo e i suoi tentacoli alla ricerca

di organismi fluttuanti nella corrente, che una volta intrappolati dalle sue appendici urticanti, porta delicatamente alla sua bocca. Uno spettacolo davvero unico da osservare.

Per gli animali diurni è però il momento del riposo. Nel Mediterraneo, per esempio, le salpe (Salpa sarpa) si raggruppano nelle acque basse protette dalla posidonia a trascorrere la notte. I tordi pavone (Symphodus tinca), invece, stazionano quasi immobili tra le rocce.

Altri organismi vagano nella corrente durante la loro fase larvale e di notte risalgono dal profondo verso quote più esplorabili, è il caso di alcuni granchi pelagici, piccoli polpi, o isopodi talvolta aggrappati a detriti o alghe.

Esistono poi alcune creature misteriose che vivono perennemente nell’oscurità come la brotula nera (Grammonus ater). Può essere osservata in luoghi totalmente bui in cui non penetra mai alcun tipo di luce ed è parente di pesci che vivono a profondità abissali.

LA FISI A DEL BUIO Luce e oscurità sono due facce della stessa medaglia. La radiazione solare è un insieme di onde energetiche di diversa natura: una parte sono quelle che noi chiamiamo “spettro del visibile”, ovvero le onde elettromagnetiche che il nostro occhio riesce a osservare, e che, per come vengono ri esse e assorbite , ci permettono di vedere il mondo intorno a noi. uando la luce del sole colpisce la superficie del mare, una parte viene ri essa dalla superficie e l altra, invece, penetra verso le profondit ; ma in maniera molto diversa a seconda della frequenza d onda e quindi del colore della luce .

Basta guardarsi intorno mentre ci immergiamo in mare per accorgersi che dopo i primissimi metri d acqua continuiamo a vedere le forme, ma non distinguiamo pi efficacemente i colori. apprima scompare il rosso, poi l arancione, il giallo e via via tutti i colori caldi e l ambiente intorno a noi si tinge dei toni del blu e del verde. uando, infine, si arriva molto in profondit , la luce solare scompare totalmente e l assenza dello spettro visibile rende il mare nero, proprio come quando, dal tramonto in poi, la luce svanisce e prendono il sopravvento le tenebre.

The darkness of the abyss A glimpse at the mysterious and unusual creatures of the night Total darkness, that fleeting aspect of the night, reaches down to the abyss populated by fantastic creatures. The night is the realm of the different: hidden in the shade during the day; life forms emerge into the open with the setting of the sun.

From within ravines, a multitude of small organisms emerge from beneath their stones, well hidden during the day. It is their time, whether to hunt, mate or to lay theirs eggs, and this makes life at night far from monotonous beneath the water’s surface.

Thus, we can not only discover all those animals that might not be found during the day, but also those that let themselves be approached at night when, miraculously, they reveal an unexpected confidence.

The behavioural strategies of the daytime inhabitants are reversed; it is no longer blue light that envelops everything, but darkness tending to blackness, changing the rules for survival.

The showy liveries of diurnal fish become softer and the red coloration, which attracts attention under sunlight, helps instead to conceal at night.

Night is the time of invertebrates and, in the Mediterranean just as in the tropical seas, the cephalopods are among the major players.

The white-spotted octopus (Callistoctopus macropus), known as the polpessa in italian (which is not the female of the octopus - polpo - as one might think from the common name), is a species with strictly nocturnal habits, wandering in search of crustaceans and molluscs upon which to feed.

It would seem to be well protected at night, but this is the time when morays go hunting and, in order to escape an attack, the octopus must sometimes need to sacrifice a tentacle.

Squid on the other hand, rises from the sea depths to lay their eggs near the coast, whilst cuttlefish hides in the sand waiting for some small prey to catch.

With a little luck we might encounter one of the most beautiful fish in the Mediterranean Sea - The John Dory fish (Zeus faber) is notable for its beautiful silver colouring with yellow streaks and for the elongated fan-shaped dorsal and pectoral fins. It can catch its prey by extruding a complex mouth and swallowing them in one bite. This fish is often visible even during daytime, but it is only at night that it lets itself be approached. As if spellbound by divers’ torches, it comes up to touch them and then moves away, repeating its sinuous dance several times.

On the other hand, some tropical species, like the lionfish (Pterois miles) can take advantage of the same torch light to hunt small fish its attract. In fact, it is thanks to the irresistible attraction of artificial lighting that I was lucky enough to draw close to one in a particular situation: “I was at a depth of a few meters

during a night dive in a quiet bay near Hurgada, in Egypt. I could see the glow of the moon and the lights of the boat above me that faintly lit up the white sand bottom, on which coral formations could be seen. I was trying to capture this incredible atmosphere when a beautiful lionfish emerged from behind a basket star, just as I was preparing to shoot, enabling me to capture a unique image“.

Darkness creates the ideal opportunity to meet the queen of the Mediterranean night; the wonderful berried anemone (Alicia mirabilis) an actinia or sea anemone, which is inconspicuous, almost to the point of invisibility by day and yet, at night, is revealed in all its glory. It extends its body and tentacles in search of organisms carried by the passing current; these are trapped by the stinging appendages of the anemone and gently carried to the mouth: a really fascinating performance to watch.

DAR P SI S Light and darkness are two sides of the same coin. Solar radiation is a continuum of energy waves of different nature, a part of which we call the “visible spectrum”. These are the electromagnetic waves that our eye is able to observe, as an analogue by perceiving colours, via our brains, that correspond to different frequencies of light. The way these waves are re ected and absorbed by ob ects allows us to see the world around us. hen sunlight hits the surface of the sea, part is re ected whilst the remainder penetrates the surface moving towards the depths to a different extent that depends upon on the frequency of the radiation a property that which we perceive as the colour of the light.

It is enough to look around as we dive into the sea to begin to realize that, after a descent of the first few meters, we continue to see shapes, but we no longer distinguish colours effectively. t first, the red disappears, then the orange, the yellow and when gradually all the warm colours will have been absorbed and the environment around us is tinged with shades of green and blue. When at last we reach the depths, sunlight completely disappears and the absence of visible light – electromagnetic radiation from a narrow range of the visible spectrum ma es the sea seem blac , ust as dar ness ta es over when light fades after sunset.

For daytime animals, however, night is a time of rest. In the Mediterranean, for example, goldlines (Salpa sarpa) gather in shallow waters, where they spend the night protected by the sea grass (Posidonia oceanica). The peacock wrasse (Symphodus tinca) stand almost motionless among the rocks.

Other organisms wander in the current during their larval phases, rising at night from the depths towards more accessible levels. This is the case with some pelagic crabs, small octopuses, or isopods that sometimes cling to debris or algae.

Then there are those mysterious creatures that exist in perpetual darkness like the black brotula (Grammonus ater). This species lives solely in completely dark environments and can be found in places where no light ever penetrates. It is a relative of those fish that live in abyssal depths.

Le sfumature della natura sommersa Un universo di combinazioni, un mondo di comunicazione Dal rosso della ballerina spagnola, al verde fluorescente di un’ascidia fino al blu intenso dell’acqua limpida dell’oceano.

Le creature marine si mostrano in una moltitudine di colori perché l’evoluzione ha declinato una varietà di soluzioni, dalle più spettacolari e appariscenti a quelle criptiche e mimetiche. Colore in natura vuol dire soprattutto comunicazione; possiamo trovare tra gli organismi marini, diversi “interpreti” che sfruttano strategicamente la colorazione a loro vantaggio.

Un organismo può avere un aspetto “mimetico”, simile cioè all’ambiente che lo circonda, come scorpenidi e moltissimi altri pesci bentonici che imitano per forma e per colore il substrato su cui vivono. I piccoli gamberi commensali che si possono trovare con un’ampia diversità sia di specie che di colore, come per esempio i gamberi del crinoide o quelli delle stelle marine, imitano perfettamente la tinta dei loro ospiti. E, come si può intuire dal nome, sfruttano la posizione vantaggiosa per procurarsi più facilmente cibo e protezione.

I pesci pelagici, invece, hanno una colorazione scura sulla parte superiore del corpo per confondersi con il colore blu scuro del profondo del mare e una colorazione chiara della parte inferiore per confondersi con la luce che penetra dalla superficie dell’acqua. Questa caratteristica è conosciuta come countershading o contrombreggiatura. È questa anche la colorazione tipica delle megattere, scure sul dorso e bianche sul ventre. Vedere questi immensi animali in natura è un’emozione difficile da dimenticare. Immersi nel blu intenso, i raggi del sole attraversano la superficie e si perdono in profondità, a un tratto i nostri occhi iniziano a scorgere degli aloni chiari come dei punti dispersi nell’acqua. Si tratta dei bordi delle pinne della megattera. Appena riusciamo a ricomporre l’intera immagine e a comprenderne le dimensioni che arrivano fino a 16 metri, rimaniamo meravigliati dall’incredibile potenza e imponenza di questi magnifici mammiferi.

Altre creature, invece, utilizzano il colore a scopo intimidatorio, o meglio di ammonimento: i colori sgargianti di alcuni nudibranchi come il tropicale Nembrotha kubaryana o come il Diaphorodoris papillata, nel mar Mediterraneo, servono a segnalare ai potenziali predatori che si trovano davanti a un organismo non commestibile. Queste colorazioni, definite aposematiche, allo stesso modo di come sulla terra fanno ad esempio api e vespe, comunicano la pericolosità

dell’animale con una livrea appariscente. Le colorazioni aposematiche sono ben standardizzate, al punto che alcuni abitanti del mondo sommerso hanno evoluto la capacità d’imitarle a proprio vantaggio. Alcune di queste sono condivise da specie diverse che inviano lo stesso messaggio rafforzandolo, in modo che il predatore capisca chiaramente che “da certe tinte” è meglio tenersi alla larga (mimetismo mulleriano).

Pur non rappresentando una reale minaccia, alcuni organismi riescono a ingannare i predatori grazie alle colorazioni che ricordano quelle di animali realmente pericolosi. Ad esempio l’innocuo polpo tropicale, conosciuto come “mimic octopus” (Thaumoctopus mimicus), ha imparato a imitare forma e colore di diversi organismi pericolosi, ingannando così l’osservatore.

Parlando di polpi, e in generale di cefalopodi, vediamo come l’evoluzione della comunicazione attraverso il colore venga portata a un livello più elevato con lo sviluppo dei cromatofori. Sono cellule particolari riempite di pigmenti che possono essere contratte o espanse per cambiare la tonalità e l’intensità del loro

L’ORIGINE DEL OLORE Molti pigmenti coloranti vengono assimilati e accumulati attraverso l’alimentazione.

A terra il più famoso degli esempi è quello dei fenicotteri rosa, che non sono rosa alla nascita ma lo diventano, in quanto si nutrono dei piccoli crostacei da cui estraggono pigmenti carotenoidi. Nei mari il pigmento in assoluto più comune è quello verde della clorofilla, presente in tutti vegetali marini, e che attraverso il pascolo degli erbivori entra nel regno animale. La famosa tartaruga verde (Chelonia mydas), erbivora, accumula ad esempio i pigmenti verdi nel suo grasso, il nome comune infatti deriva dai “cupi periodi” in cui veniva utilizzata come riserva alimentare.

Molti altri pigmenti, dai chinoni presenti nei ricci di mare agli indoli, che danno il color porpora di alcuni gasteropodi, ai carotenoidi, abbondantissimi nel carapace dei crostacei, nascono per una funzione fisiologica si ricordi nuovamente la clorofilla piuttosto che i pigmenti respiratori ed attraverso la predazione e l accumulo nei tessuti, finiscono con restituire la moltitudine di sfumature che possiamo osservare. a non tutto il colore del nostro pianeta blu fatto da pigmenti, ci sono alcune colorazioni che vengono definite strutturali , ovvero che possiamo osservare grazie al comportamento che la luce ha con le strutture di alcuni organismi. Regina di tutti gli esempi in questo è la madreperla: l’effetto madreperlaceo è infatti solo dovuto al fatto che le conchiglie si costruiscono sottilissimi strati sovrapposti di carbonato di calcio e conchiolina, e ogni singolo strato talmente sottile da ri ettere una sola lunghezza d’onda della radiazione luminosa. uando la luce colpisce la madreperla, ogni strato ri ette quindi un solo colore e nel complesso i vari strati restituiscono l’effetto madreperlaceo. colore, istantaneamente a seconda delle necessità, principalmente per mimetizzarsi, ma anche per comunicare sia con i propri simili, per attirare l’attenzione di un esemplare del sesso opposto, coppure per intimidire eventuali predatori.

Molti pigmenti, che restituiscono le colorazioni che vediamo, vengono invece assimilati attraverso l’alimentazione. Questo lega due volte l’organismo all’ambiente in cui vive: l’habitat fornisce il cibo di cui si nutre, da cui estrae i colori che espone per comunicare nell’ambiente stesso. The nuances of nature beneath the waves A universe of combinations; a world of communication From the red of the Spanish dancer, to the fluorescent green of a sea squirt (ascidian), to the intense blue of the clear ocean water.

Sea creatures display themselves through a multitude of colours. Evolution has provided a variety of colour schemes, ranging from the most spectacular and showy to the cryptic and mimetic. Colour in nature means, above all, communication and among marine organisms we can find different “interpreters” strategically exploiting their colouring to advantage.

An organism can have a “mimetic” colour, similar to the environment that surrounds it. Scorpionfish and many other benthic fish mimic the substratum on which they live, both in shape and colour. Those small prawns living with other organisms and benefiting without harming them (commensal prawns) can be found living with a wide diversity of variously coloured species, for example, the crinoid prawns or starfish prawns that perfectly mimic the colour of their guests. They utilise their advantageous position to secure both food and protection more easily.

Pelagic fish, on the other hand, have a dark coloration on the top and seen from above they blend with the dark blue colour of the deep sea. However, when seen from below, the light colouring of the underpart of the body is confused with the light that penetrates the surface of the water. This typical colouring is known as counter-shading.

This is also the typical colour scheme of humpback whales: dark on the back and white on the belly. Seeing these immense animals in the wild is an emotional experience not easily forgotten. Immersed in intense blue, the sun’s rays pass through the surface and become lost in the depths - suddenly, our eyes begin make out halos of light, as points dispersed in the water. These are the edges of the humpback whale’s fins.

As soon as we manage to visualise the entire image, we appreciate the sheer size…up to 16 meters in length and are amazed by the incredible power and majesty of these magnificent mammals.

Some creatures, on the other hand, use colouring for intimidation, or as a warning: the bright colours of some nudibranchs such as the tropical Nembrotha kubaryana or Diaphorodoris papillata, in the Mediterranean sea, serve to signal to potential predators that they are faced with an inedible organism.

This kind of colouration, know as aposematic, communicates the potential danger of an animal by employing a striking colour scheme, in the same way as bees and wasps do on dry land.

Aposematic colourations seem to be standardised, to the point that some inhabitants of the underwater world have evolved the ability to employ them to their advantage by imitating them. Some of these colour schemes are shared by different species thus sending a strengthened message so that the potential predator clearly recognises that certain colours and designs are best avoided (Mullerian mimicry).

Some organisms are able to deceive predators, utilising colours reminiscent of those of really dangerous animals and yet, themselves, do not present any real threat. For example, the harmless tropical octopus, known as the “mimic octopus� (Thaumoctopus mimicus), has learned to imitate the shape and color of various dangerous organisms, in order to deceive the observer.

Speaking of octopuses, and of cephalopods in general, we can see how communication via colour has evolved to a higher level through the development

of chromatophores. Theses are particular cells filled with pigments that can be rapidly contracted or expanded according to need, changing both the hue and intensity of their colour. This is mainly for mimicry (e.g. blending with a background) but also for communication with its own species both to attract the attention of the opposite sex (as with organisms of other species) or to intimidate possible predators.

Many of the pigments that produce the visible coloration are assimilated through feeding.

This twice binds the organism to the environment in which it lives for the habitat provides the food it feeds on, and in turn, it extracts the colour pigments it exhibits to communicate within the environment itself.

One example is the harlequin shrimp (Hymenocera elegans), typical of the Indo-Pacific, which feeds mainly on starfish from which it extracts the blue and reddish pigments responsible for its colouring.

Eleganti, minimaliste, articolate e bizzarre Le sculture dell’evoluzione, la varietà delle forme, eleganti o sfarzose, sempre perfette per la loro funzione In questa apparente bizzarria, tutto ha una funzione e queste forme, per noi così insolite, sono il frutto dell’evoluzione che ha portato a sviluppare le soluzioni più efficaci a svolgere una determinato compito.

Molte silhouette sembrano essere impreziosite da particolari gioielli: basti pensare alla perfezione geometrica degli aculei di un riccio, alla bellezza eterea quanto urticante delle setole di un vermocane alle spicole calcaree di un alcionaceo che disegnano texture intricate.

Le sagome dei grandi nuotatori, i pesci ossei pelagici, i pesci cartilaginei come le mante o gli squali ed ancora le silhouette dei mammiferi marini , sono forgiate sull’efficienza del movimento, perfette macchine idrodinamiche specializzate nel nuoto.

La testa del pesce martello, è uno strumento sensoriale evoluto per avere la funzione di “radar” e si è così sviluppato in larghezza per avere una superficie più ampia possibile e poter recepire efficientemente gli stimoli elettrici captati dagli organi sensoriali (ampolle di Lorenzini).

Anche i tentacoli o braccia del polpo, sono uno strumento sensoriale e create per toccare e adattarsi a ogni superficie. Sono tra le forme più affascinanti del mondo animale e, dotate di due file di ventose con cui riescono ad afferrare ogni tipo di oggetto, sono percorse da una fitta rete neuronale che costituisce gran parte del sistema nervoso del polpo stesso.

Il rostro del pescespada, invece, è utilizzato per stordire o ferire le sue prede quando si avventa contro un fitto banco di pesci. Le chele del granchio sono arti che non servono al movimento ma sono specializzati per difesa e offesa, per schiacciare e spezzare.

Altri strumenti di “caccia” molto diversi dai precedenti sono le “estremità” di uno spirografo, un verme marino che vive all’interno di un tubo elastico da lui costruito e dal quale sporgono esili strutture, simili a eleganti piume dorate. Sono in realtà sia il sistema respiratorio dell’animale che un “filtro” per intercettare cibo portato dalla corrente.

Aculei spine e setole: ci sono forme che si sono evolute specificamente a scopo difensivo. Gli aculei dei ricci di mare, le setole urticanti del vermocane, così come tutte le spine che sporgono dal carapace di un crostaceo, servono ad allontanare i potenziali predatori che nell’attacco rischiano di rimanere feriti a loro volta. In certi casi la forma è funzionale al mimetismo, come visto precedentemente con il colore. Alcuni organismi assumono forme a un primo sguardo appariscenti ma che, osservate nel loro ambiente, rivelano quanto siano funzionali a un mimetismo perfetto.

A IDIFI AZIONE DEGLI O EANI Le strutture che danno consistenza al corpo e che hanno la funzione di armi di difesa hanno tutte una “costruzione” molto simile.

Molti organismi, infatti, “biomineralizzano” carbonato di calcio; ovvero catturano il carbonio ed il calcio in forma di ioni liberi nell’acqua, e con processi molto complessi costruiscono appunto cristalli di carbonato di calcio che vanno a costruire queste bellissime ed efficientissime strutture.

Questi processi sono tanto complessi quanto a volte ancora poco conosciuti nelle loro dinamiche più profonde; basti pensare che oggigiorno alcuni progetti di ricerca più all’avanguardia sono focalizzati sul capire la natura profonda dei meccanismi di biomineralizzazione di alcuni tra i più arcaici organismi ancora oggi presenti sul pianeta, quali i Briozoi.

Mentre il mondo della ricerca cerca di comprendere questi processi, allo stesso tempo cerca di capire come questi siano in uenzati dall acidificazione degli ceani.

L’eccesso di anidride carbonica nell’atmosfera fa si che questa si vada a diffondere nel mare, legandosi con l’acqua e diventando acido carbonico.

Elegant, minimalist, articulate and bizarre The sculptures of evolution, the variety of forms exhibited, elegant or sumptuous but always perfectly adapted to their function In fact, perhaps counter intuitively, everything with a function and form that seems unusual to us, is the result of an evolutionary process that led to the development of the most effective solutions for performing certain tasks.

Many silhouettes seem to be embellished with particular ‘jewels’: think, for instance, of the geometric perfection of sea urchin spines, the ethereal and stinging beauty of the bristles of a vermocane (Hermodice carunculata) or the calcareous spicules of an alkionaceous coral that seem to create textures.

The silhouettes of great swimmers, such as the pelagic bony fish, cartilaginous fish like manta rays or sharks and even the silhouettes of marine mammals, are forged for efficiency of movement - perfect hydrodynamic machines refined for swimming.

The head of the hammerhead is a sensory instrument evolved to function as a “radar”, its width has developed to provide as wide a receptive surface as possible to be able to receive, efficiently, the electrical stimuli picked up by the sensory organs it contains (Lorenzini ampoules).

Even the tentacles or arms of the octopus are a sensory tool, evolved to touch and adapt to any surface. They are among the most fascinating forms in the animal world, equipped to grasp every type of object by employing two rows of suction cups. They are crossed by a dense neural network that makes up a large part of the octopus’s nervous system.

On the other hand, the sword of a swordfish, is used to stun or injure its prey when it lashes it against a dense shoal of fish. The claws of the crab have designs that do not serve merely for movement but are adapted to crush and break, both for defence and offence.

Other “hunting” devices, very different from those previously mentioned, are the “extremities” of a spirograph (Sabella spallanzanii). This is a marine worm that lives inside a calcareous tube it produces and from which thin structures protrude, similar to elegant golden feathers. These are, in fact, both the respiratory system of the animal as well as a “filter” to intercept food carried by the current.

Spines, thorns and bristles are forms that have evolved specifically for defensive purposes, whether we think of the spines of sea urchins, the stinging

bristles of vermocane, or the thorns that protrude from the carapace of a crustacean. They serve to ward off potential predators, which themselves risk being injured.

In some cases a shape serves for camouflage, as seen previously in the case of colour. At first glance, some organisms seem able to take on shapes that, when viewed within the context of their environment, reveal how they contribute to perfect mimicry.

Think of the barbels of bottom fish such as the monkfish or the scorpion fish, with its hippocampal protuberances that resemble the algae often found in its environment.

Sometimes the “environment” on which some organisms remain camouflaged can itself be another animal or even a colony of animals. There are

In these examples, shapes, in combination with colours perfectly imitate the surrounding environment making them practically indistinguishable from their hosts.

A IDIFI ATION OF O EANS The structures that give consistency to a body and which function as defensive weapons, all have a very similar “construction”.

In fact, many organisms “biomineralize” calcium carbonate; that is, they capture carbon and calcium in the form of free ions in water, and with complex processes they create precise calcium carbonate crystals with which these beautiful and highly efficient structures are constructed.

These processes are complex and are sometimes little known at their basic level; just think that nowadays some of the most advanced of research projects are focused on understanding the profound nature of the biomineralization mechanisms of some of the most archaic organisms (such as the Bryozoa) still present on our planet today.

As the research world tries to understand these processes, so we try to understand how these are in uenced by the acidification of the oceans.

The excess of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes it to spread in the sea, binding with water and becoming carbonic acid. he increase in this has a negative in uence on all organisms where “biomineralisation” occurs… from the spine of a sea urchin, to the shell of a mussel, the carapace of a crustacean and to the calcites of all the polyps that together construct the marvel of a reef.

All the organisms that have evolved the ability to build carbonate structures over millions of years see their existence compromised in some way. What is the extent of the damage and the ability to respond to such a stress? What exactly is happening and what are the risks and prospects for the future? These are some of the many questions to which marine research tries to provide answers and considerations that we all need to reassess in attempting to balance the relationship between Man and Sea.

Meravigliosi mostri Maschere spaventose o grottesche, affascinanti nella loro perfezione evolutiva Dal punto di vista antropologico la maschera ha rappresentato nei secoli un mezzo con il quale l’uomo ha tentato di avvicinarsi alla divinità, con cui appropriarsi della forza soprannaturale degli spiriti. È forse proprio per questo motivo che in queste creature ci rispecchiamo e ritroviamo e che ci affascinano così tanto?

Lunghi musi come quello del grongo o della murena, facce buffe come quella mostrata dal granchio melograno o dalla bavosa occhiuta, maschere colorate come quelle degli scorpenidi, cos’hanno in comune tutti questi animali?

Forse proprio perché non sembrano creature marine ma maschere antropomorfe, ci fissano con sguardi a cui attribuiamo le espressioni più diverse. Anche in questo caso, la varietà di forme ed “espressioni” è declinata dagli adattamenti funzionali evolutivi.

Nascondersi per trarre in inganno la preda e sparire per non essere visti dai predatori. Questa necessità di mimetizzarsi ha donato agli scorpenidi, come lo scorfano mediterraneo (Scorpaena sp.) o la rinopia (Rhinopias frondosa), “travestimenti” spettacolari: colori sgargianti (ma funzionali al mimetismo nel loro ambiente) con appendici e protuberanze simili a merletti nascondono grandi bocche pronte a catturare le loro prede.

La rana pescatrice (Lophius piscatorius), meraviglioso mostro, capolavoro evolutivo, è un altro esempio eccellente: ha un corpo appiattito, costituito in gran parte dalla testa ricoperta di creste e spine, decorata da meravigliosi barbigli ai bordi. Rimane appostata sul fondo e perfettamente mimetizzata con il fondale; invisibile alle sue prede, agita un’appendice carnosa (Illicio) posta all’estremità del primo raggio della pinna dorsale a simulare un piccolo pesce, come fosse una canna da pesca e la preda, attirata dall’inganno, una volta a portata di tiro, viene inghiottita in un sol colpo dalle sue enormi fauci.

La sua bocca è un’esposizione di denti aguzzi, sia sulla parte inferiore che in quella inferiore e alcuni, detti denti vomerini, sono curiosamente posti all’interno della bocca stessa, per trattenere la preda. In maniera simile il pesce rana, perfettamente travestito da spugna, agita quello che alla sua malcapitata vittima potrebbe sembrare un verme o un mollusco e, aprendo la sua grande bocca, la risucchia con un movimento fulmineo.

Ci sono alcune di queste maschere a cui conferiamo espressioni talvolta arrabbiate, tristi o buffe. Si tratta ovviamente di un’interpretazione “umanizzata”, dietro alla quale ci sono caratteristiche e comportamenti specifici. Per esempio, conferiamo ai delfini espressioni felici anche quando sono costretti in cattività a subire pratiche insensate per il divertimento degli esseri umani; ma questa è un’altra storia.

Alle murene, invece, attribuiamo un’accezione diabolica e aggressiva ma in realtà è solo frutto del modo che hanno di respirare. Hanno infatti un apparato respiratorio molto particolare che, non essendo dotate di opercoli branchiali rigidi e mobili come altri pesci, le costringe a tenere la bocca aperta per favorire il passaggio dell’acqua attraverso le branchie. Non hanno quindi nulla di minaccioso, è solo il loro modo di respirare.

Anche l’espressione del pesce prete è assolutamente una nostra interpretazione. La sua grande bocca piegata all’ingiù ed i suoi occhi ci ricordano una

Allo stesso modo, anche le facce buffe di alcuni crostacei come il granchio melograno (Calappa granulata) o della mazzancolla mediterranea (Penaeus kerathurus) sono dovuti evolutivamente alle loro abitudini. Wonderful monsters Here we take a look at creatures with frightening masks, fascinating in their evolutionary perfection Over the centuries, from the anthropological point of view, a mask has represented a means by which man has endeavoured to approach a divinity, in order to appropriate some supernatural strengthening of the spirit.

Is it precisely for this reason we might reflect and discover something within ourselves about these creatures and why they fascinate us so much?

There are long faces like that of the conger or the moray, amusing faces like the one shown by the pomegranate crab or the blenny’s eyes and coloured masks such as those of scorpion fishes.

What do all these animals have in common? Perhaps it is that they do not look like sea creatures but seem to sport anthropomorphic masks, that stare at us with looks to which we can attribute the most diverse of expressions.

In this case, the variety of forms and of those «expressions» is decided through functional adaptation during evolution.

Hiding serves both to deceive the prey and to enable others to vanish so as not to be seen by predators. This need to camouflage has provided the scorphenids, such as the Mediterranean scorpionfish (Scorpaena sp.) or the weedy scorpionfish (Rhinopias frondosa) with spectacular “disguises” bright colours (offering camouflage in their environment) plus appendages and protuberances similar to laces. All these hide large mouths ready to capture potential prey.

The anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius), is a wonderful monster, an evolutionary masterpiece.

It has a flattened body, consisting largely of a head covered with ridges and thorns, that are decorated with wonderful barbs at the edges. It remains stationed on the sea bottom and is perfectly camouflaged against the background. It is invisible to its prey but shakes a fleshy appendage (Illicium)

placed at the end of the first ray of the dorsal fin to simulate a small fish… like a fishing rod. The prey, attracted by the deception, is swallowed in one fell swoop by the huge jaws of the monkfish as soon as it comes within reach.

Its mouth reveals sharp teeth on both the lower part and bottom plus others (called vomerino teeth) that are placed inside the mouth itself to hold the prey. Similarly, thr frogfish shakes an appendage that its unfortunate victim might see as a worm or a mollusc and then sucks it in by opening its large mouth with a lightning-fast movement.

There are some of these masks in which we envisage expressions, sometimes angry, sad or funny. This is obviously an anthropomorphic interpretation, behind which lie specific characteristics and behaviour patterns. In this way we erroneously attribute ‘happy’ expressions to dolphins, for example, even when they are forced into captivity to undergo senseless practices for the enjoyment of human beings… but that is another story.

Morays, on the other hand, are labelled with a devilish and aggressive nature when, in reality, it is only the way they have to breathe. They have a particular respiratory system and are not equipped with rigid and mobile gill capsules like other fish. This forces them to keep their mouths open to facilitate the passage of water through their gills. They are not threatening - it’s just their way of breathing.

Even the sad expression of the stargazer is obviously “our� interpretation, because its large mouth recalls a human expression. The fish lurks in the sand ready to pop out with only its eyes barely protruding.

Again, the amusing faces of some crustaceans are of evolutionarily origin due to their habits as with the pomegranate crab (Calappa granulata) or of the Mediterranean shrimp (Penaeus kerathurus). Their imaginary eyes are nothing more than the particular part of the body that emerges from the sand in which they spend most of the day sunken - practically invisible to prey and predators.

Per la maggior parte delle creature marine questo miracolo, che si ripete da millenni, avviene grazie ad un uovo.

Questa protezione amorevole dura diversi giorni, durante i quali il genitore non può nutrirsi, il suo compito è solo quello di proteggere la prole. Sembrerebbe però, che qualcuna delle uova venga ingerita dal pesce garantendo così la sua sussistenza. In ogni caso la sopravvivenza di molti individui è anteposta alla morte di pochi.

Questo inconsueto esempio di cure parentali, quando accade è quasi sempre a carico dei maschi. Questo perché la produzione delle uova porta le femmine a investire molta più energia rispetto a quella dei maschi, che quindi “pareggiano i conti” impegnandosi nelle cure parentali. È una strategia molto diffusa anche nei mari tropicali che possiamo trovare in molte specie di pesci cardinali come il “Ring-tailed cardinal fish” (Ostorhinchus aureus) che ha un comportamento identico al suo cugino mediterraneo, compresi gli scatti che compie per estrudere le uova dalla bocca per probabilmente per ossigenarle e poi riposizionarle.

Anche le uova di bavosa cornuta sono protette dal maschio, che prepara e cura il nido per tutto il periodo riproduttivo. Talvolta è possibile trovare le bavose in deposizione dentro bottiglie, tubi o qualsiasi altro oggetto abbandonato dall’uomo.

Un altro esempio di cure genitoriali delle uova è quello del pesce pagliaccio. Gli adulti curano le uova ossigenandole, spostando l’acqua circostante con movimenti delicati delle pinne o della bocca e proteggendole da qualsiasi minaccia. I pesci pagliaccio sono infatti disposti a tutto per difendere la loro casa e non esitano ad attaccare chiunque si avvicini, talvolta anche i subacquei.

Interessante inoltre, la strategia sociale adottata da questi pesciolini: tutti gli esemplari nascono e rimangono maschi e solo il più anziano è una femmina. Quando questa verrà a mancare, l’esemplare maschio più alto in gerarchia cambierà il proprio sesso in femmina per sostituirla e così via.

Il basso numero di uova e le cure parentali non sono però la norma nel mondo sommerso.

Nella maggior parte dei casi si fa affidamento sulla quantità, su quello che è denominato potenziale biotico. La produzione di un elevato numero di uova Maschio di re di triglie (Apogon Imberbis) cova le uova nella sua bocca fino alla loro schiusa. Una strategia affascinante e molto diffusa nei mari di tutto il mondo.

garantisce, nonostante le numerose perdite nelle varie fasi di sviluppo, d’arrivare comunque ad avere un numero significativo d’individui adulti e capaci di riprodursi. È affascinante vedere come esistano diverse strategie alcune più semplici altre più complesse e particolari e per certi versi drammatiche.

L’investimento e sacrificio estremo nella prosecuzione della specie è quello attuato dalla lampreda di mare (Petromyzon marinus). Nasce e trascorre la fase larvale in acque dolci, cresce e vive gran parte della sua esistenza in mare aperto; raggiunta la maturità risale le acque del fiume in cui è nata per riprodursi, completando così il suo ciclo vitale.

Tutto lo sforzo impiegato per la migrazione, unito al forte stress per il passaggio dall’acqua di mare a quella dolce, portano la lampreda a consumare fino all’ultima goccia di energia per la riproduzione, morendo subito dopo.

Questa morte è doppiamente nobile: è stata ovviamente fondamentale per la prosecuzione della specie, mentre per l’intero ecosistema in cui la lampreda è andata a morire, rappresenta una risorsa alimentare che va a chiudere il ciclo della materia e dell’energia.

The spark of life The continuation of species from generation to generation For most marine creatures this miracle, which has been repeated for millennia, takes place thanks to an egg.

Eggs, are abandoned to their fate in most cases, deposited in protected places by some species or, in very few examples such as the blennies, clown fish, seahorses or apogonids, defended by loving parents.

In the Mediterranean Sea, the male cardinal fish (Apogon imberbis) also known as king of the mullets, incubates the fertilised eggs (passed by the female) inside its mouth until they hatch: an investment for the future of the species. This dedicated protection lasts several days, during which the parent cannot feed: his sole task is to protect the offspring. However, it would seem that some of the eggs are ingested by the fish thus aiding its survival. In any case, the survival of many individuals often demands the death of a few.

When it happens, this unusual example of parental care is almost always borne by males. This is because females invest much more energy than males in egg production and then, in turn, males “balance the accounts” by engaging in parental care.

It is also a widespread strategy in tropical seas where we find many cardinal fish species, such as the “ring-tailed cardinal fish” (Ostorhinchus aureus) which exhibits the same behaviour as its Mediterranean cousin, including bursts of extruding eggs from the mouth in order to reposition them, probably to oxygenate them.

Horned blenny’s eggs are also protected by the male, who both prepares and guards the nest for the whole reproductive period. Sometimes, it is possible to find blennies depositing in bottles, tubes and other objects abandoned by man.

Another example of egg-parenting is provided by the clown fish. The adults protect and guard the eggs, oxygenating them by moving the surrounding water with delicate movements of the fins or mouth, and safeguarding them from any threat. Clownfish are, in fact, willing to do anything to defend their home and do not hesitate to attack anyone who comes close - sometimes even divers.

Of interest, too, is the social strategy adopted by these little fish: all specimens are born and remain male with only the eldest becoming a female. When this fails, the highest ranking male in the hierarchy will change sex to replace it.

However, producing low numbers of eggs with parental care is not the norm. Quantity is relied upon in most cases - something called biotic potential.

The production of a great number of eggs guarantees survival, despite numerous losses in the various stages of development. This is the case even when there is still a significant number of adult individuals capable of reproducing.

The number game appears to offer a winning strategy even in fresh water. It is fascinating to see how different strategies exist, some are simple, others more complex: particular examples can be dramatic in some ways. The extreme investment and sacrifice in the continuation of a species is exhibited by the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus). Lampreys are born and spend their larval phase in fresh water, subsequently growing and living out much of their

existence in the open sea. When a lamprey reaches maturity, it returns to reproduce in the waters of the river where it was born, thus completing its life cycle.

All the effort spent on migration, combined with the strong biological stress caused by the passage from sea water to fresh water, leads lampreys to exhaust the very last drop of energy for the sake of reproduction, for they die immediately after spawning.

In a sense, this death is doubly noble, for it was obviously essential to the continuation of the species while, for the entire ecosystem in which the lamprey returned to die, it represents a food resource that closes the circle of matter and energy.

Between the two, evolution has developed an incredible variety of middle paths, which we can understand by looking at the number of eggs, their size, the production of nests or courtship strategies. o appreciate the reasons for all of this we need to remember that the ultimate goal is to make the most of every single drop of energy invested in order to perpetuate the species through survival and reproduction.

Il cerchio della vita La scomparsa di un individuo, la sopravvivenza di un altro

La morte di una preda consente la vita di un predatore, è quindi solo una parte del ciclo vitale e questo in natura è ancora più evidente rispetto alla nostra concezione antropocentrica.

Avendo la possibilità di osservare le meraviglie del mondo sommerso ci possiamo rendere conto che questo avviene in ogni istante; pesce grande mangia pesce piccolo una lotta continua, mangiare o essere mangiato?

Nel ciclo della vita sia il pesce grande che il pesce piccolo torneranno ad essere cibo, torneranno ad essere energia mantenendo in equilibrio l’ecosistema e con un po’ di fortuna possiamo quindi essere testimoni di scene indimenticabili.

Un rombo, viene catturato da una seppia non molto più grande di lui, che cerca ti trascinarlo via e di mangiarlo partendo dalla testa.

In un’altra occasione invece, è la seppia ad essere la vittima di un polpo, che con uno scatto fulmineo la avvolge tra i suoi tentacoli e cerca di ucciderla con la sua bocca dotata di un robusto becco corneo.

E infine, sarà il polpo probabilmente ad essere ucciso, magari proprio da quel predatore così determinato ed organizzato che è l’essere umano.

Anche in acque dolci possiamo assistere a scene di predazione spettacolari come quella in cui una biscia d’acqua (Natrix tessellata) cattura un barbo.

Durante una calda giornata estiva, ho visto incresparsi l’acqua del fiume che scorreva lentamente ed ho riconosciuto subito la sagoma di una biscia che veniva dritta verso di me, incredibilmente teneva in bocca un pesce che ha cercato di portare fuori dall’acqua dove, avrebbe potuto mangiarlo più facilmente una volta soffocato.

Non solo predazioni “violente” caratterizzano quest’equilibrio morte e vita, ci sono infatti moltissimi organismi detritivori che si nutrono di tutto ciò che rimane sul fondo, per esempio le oloturie (cetrioli di mare) o i murici, voraci molluschi, che si cibano di pesci morti e resti vari caduti sul fondale. Non è difficile trovarli in zone di pesca in cui i pescatori ritirando le reti, perdono inevitabilmente qualche pesce che cade su fondo.

E proprio anche attraverso le reti calate in acqua che siamo in grado di essere testimoni delle capacità del predatore più efficiente e spietato.

Se in natura ogni morte è una risorsa e nulla viene sprecato, per un essere che sopravvive, c’è un “animale” che fa eccezione ed interrompe questo stato di equilibrio: l’uomo.

Incapace di fermarsi, preleva, sfrutta, si ingegna per trarre più profitto e considera il mare una fonte inesauribile ed una gigante spazzatura mettendo in discussione la salute degli oceani e la sopravvivenza dei loro abitanti.

RETE TROFICA E RICICLO DI ENERGIA I temi trattati in questo capitolo introducono il concetto del “ciclo della vita”, il ciclo della materia e dell’energia.

La materia, l’energia sotto forma di cibo, passa dalla preda al predatore fino a che, una volta morto, anche il predatore verrà decomposto restituendo quindi a sua volta materia ed energia ai produttori primari. Ogni preda infatti ha “sulle sue spalle” il peso non di una, ma di diverse specie di predatori, che spesso a loro volta sostengono altri predatori innescando così delle relazioni che a volte sconfinano l’ ecosistema stesso.

In questa complessità di relazioni tra organismi, caratterizzata anche da variabili di carattere migratorio, sta l’aspetto più romantico della restituzione di materia ed energia.

La morte di un organismo acquatico può rilasciare energia in un ambiente marino costiero, lì dove la predazione di un pesce da parte di un rapace potrebbe contribuire alla fertilizzazione di un bosco, per esempio. Se quindi a partire dal semplice, e poco realistico, modello di catena alimentare arriviamo a comprendere le caratteristiche di una “rete trofica”, potremo intuire come organismi apparentemente distanti tra di loro siano invece molto influenzati gli uni dagli altri.

Tutto questo dovrebbe aiutarci a capire come anche il nostro ruolo su questo pianeta sia molto più interconnesso di quanto possiamo immaginare, nella speranza di portarci a riscoprire una posizione in equilibrio col resto “dell’ecosistema terra”.

The circle of life The disappearance of one individual; the survival of another The death of any prey species allows the survival of a predator and is, therefore, only a part of the cycle of life which is even more evident in nature than in our anthropocentric vision of the world.

Having the opportunity to observe the wonders of the underwater world, makes us realise that this happens all the time; big fish eat smaller fish in a perennial struggle: eat or be eaten.

In the cycle of life, both the big fish and the small fish eventually become food and, in this way, they return to the ecosystem by providing energy, to keep it in balance. With a little luck, we can witness some unforgettable scenes. A brill, is captured by a cuttlefish not much bigger than itself, which then tries to drag it away, eating it by starting from the head.

On another occasion, however, it is the cuttlefish that becomes the victim of an octopus, which, with lightning movements, wraps it between its tentacles and tries to kill it with its beak. Finally, the octopus will probably be killed, perhaps by a predator, utterly determined and organised in the hunt: the human being.

Even in fresh water, we can witness spectacular predation scenes such as the one in which a dice snake (Natrix tessellata) captures a barbel. “During one hot summer day, I saw the rippling water of a slow moving river and immediately perceived the shape of a snake coming straight towards me. Incredibly, it held a fish in its mouth, trying to keep it out of the water where it could be more easily eaten once it had been suffocated.”

This balance between life and death is not only characterised by “violent” predation events. In fact, there are many detritivorous organisms that feed on all that remains on the bottom beneath the water surface. For example, murex are voracious molluscs that feed on dead fish and the various remains that fall to the ocean’s floor. It is not difficult to find them in fishing areas where fishermen inevitably lose some fish on raising their nets and the bodies sink to the bottom.

Through those nets lowered into the water, we are able to witness the abilities of the most efficient and ruthless of predators. In nature every death becomes a resource for creatures that need to survive and nothing is wasted. However, there is a single predator that is an exception, the one that interrupts this state of balance between life and death and that is man.

Unable to cease, this predator takes, exploits, strives to make more profit and considers the sea an inexhaustible source and also a giant landfill threatening the health of the oceans and the survival of their inhabitants.

TROFIC NETWORK AND ENERGY RECYCLING The topics covered in this chapter introduce the concept of the “cycle of life”, the perpetual cycle of matter and energy.

Energy, in the form of food, passes from the prey to the predator until, after death, the predator will decompose and thus, in turn, matter and energy are returned to the primary producers. Indeed, each prey species carries “on its shoulders” the weight not of just one, but of different species of predator. They, in their turn, often support other predators, thus triggering relationships that sometimes define the ecosystem itself.

The most romantic aspect of the restitution of matter and energy lies within this complex web of relationships between organisms - also characterized by variables of a migratory character. The death of an aquatic organism can release energy in a coastal marine environment; the subsequent predation of a fish by a bird of prey could contribute to the fertilisation of a forest, for example.

Thus, if we start from the simple (and unrealistic) model of a food chain, we can begin to understand the characteristics of a more complex “trophic network”. Which means we can comprehend how apparently distant organisms are, instead, in uenced by one other.

Understanding and accepting this should help us appreciate how our role on this planet is far more interconnected than we can imagine. Therein lies the hope of encouraging us to rediscover a position where we could exist in equilibrium with the rest of the “earth’s ecosystem”.

Il momento di agire L’uomo e la natura, una convivenza difficile La vita del nostro pianeta dipende direttamente dalla salute dei nostri mari che ci offrono cibo, producono l’ossigeno che respiriamo, ci tengono letteralmente in vita. Il consumo di risorse da parte di una popolazione mondiale in continua crescita e la distruzione della maggior parte degli ecosistemi è giunta ormai a un punto critico. La stragrande maggioranza degli stock ittici è sovra-sfruttata; politiche di pesca non efficaci, metodi di prelievo non selettivi, aumento del consumo di specie sensibili, producono effetti devastanti.

Per quanto ancora gli oceani saranno in grado di sopportare tutto questo?

Nell’ultimo secolo stiamo assistendo a una vera e propria estinzione di massa. Molte specie simbolo come la maggior parte degli squali sono diminuite fino al 90% negli ultimi decenni e nei mari di tutto il mondo si assiste ad un incredibile impoverimento delle risorse ittiche. Oltre che per la pesca diretta questo impoverimento è dovuto anche alla pesca accidentale, effetto collaterale della pesca su larga scala.

Alcune specie sono inoltre perseguitate a causa di presunti pseudo-poteri medicinali, teorie prive di qualsiasi fondamento scientifico. Gli squali sono falcidiati per le loro pinne, lo stesso destino tocca alle mante, cacciate per le loro branchie, ai cavallucci marini è riservata la stessa sorte, e tutto per superstizione. In questo scenario globale catastrofico, come fotografo e testimone diretto dell’impatto della attività umane sull’ambiente in particolare sulle coste del Mediterraneo, al di fuori delle Aree Marine Protette, posso constatare che ritrarre la natura incontaminata è spesso un esercizio difficile.

Chilometri di costa deturpati dalla mano dell’uomo, detriti di qualsiasi tipo, dai copertoni, ai barattoli, macerie d’inerti, lenze e reti da pesca (che sono una presenza costante in tutte quelle aree non sottoposte a tutela), fondali di fiumi e laghi ricoperti di rifiuti di tutti generi e plastica dalla provenienza più varia.

Anche in queste condizioni critiche però la natura mostra la sua incredibile capacità di adattamento: reti abbandonate diventano il substrato per la deposizione delle uova di calamaro, bavose depongono uova in colli di bottiglie o barattoli abbandonati, centinaia di pesci trombetta hanno trovato come dimora ideale un vecchio carrello arrugginito ricoperto di spirografi.

Quindi uno scopo nobile della fotografia subacquea, oltre che celebrare la bellezza della natura, è sicuramente quello di sensibilizzare su questi aspetti e di mostrare non solo il bello, ma anche quanto di tragicamente brutto avviene sotto la superficie dell’acqua.

L’impatto della plastica sui nostri oceani è finalmente di dominio pubblico, ci si inizia ad accorgere che sessant’anni di “usa e getta “ hanno trasformato i nostri mari in zuppe di spazzatura con conseguenze disastrose potenzialmente anche sulla vita e salute dell’uomo stesso.

Esiste una incredibile diversità di problematiche, dalla presenza di particelle derivate dalla distruzione di manufatti plastici come bottiglie barattoli, posate, cannucce e altro ancora, alla presenza di microplastiche primarie come quelle contenute in prodotti cosmetici o in filati tessili sintetici che vengono inevitabilmente introdotte nell’ambiente attraverso il lavaggio dei nostri vestiti.

La mancanza di depuratori, o la rottura di alcuni di essi (come tragicamente noto alle cronache italiane del 2018) consentono lo sversamento in mare di tonnellate di plastica ogni anno.

Per non parlare dei rifiuti prodotti dai pescatori sportivi e dall’industria ittica, dall’abbandono di giocattoli di plastica, accendini, sigarette e altri rifiuti abbandonati direttamente sulle coste.

La plastica ha un impatto diretto sulla fauna marina causando la morte, per soffocamento o ingestione, di pesci, mammiferi marini e uccelli in modo indiretto attraverso la trasmissione di sostanze chimiche assimilate dagli organismi stessi che possono provocare mutazioni genetiche, infertilità e altre patologie. È ormai noto che molte sostanze come gli ftalati ingeriti attraverso le microplastiche dai pesci entrino nella catena alimentare fino ad arrivare sulle nostre

tavole. Alcuni studi prevedono che entro trent’anni il peso della biomassa. presente nei nostri oceani sarà equivalente a quello costituito dalla plastica. È inoltre previsto un forte aumento della produzione di plastica per i prossimi decenni e sembra davvero una corsa inarrestabile verso un inevitabile, tragico destino. Finalmente s’intravede una maggiore sensibilità globale, da parte di realtà industriali, manifatturiere che di alcune istituzioni come l’ Unione Europea che da un lato fissa obiettivi sempre più stringenti agli stati membri per la raccolta e l’avvio a riciclo delle plastiche e dall’altro continua a ricordare le priorità quando si produce un bene o un imballaggio: riduzione, riuso e riciclo meccanico.

Ci sono progetti concreti che possono muovere numeri così grandi da poter dare in tempi rapidi risultati importanti come aumentare le quantità di riciclo del PET, il materiale delle bottiglie, che può essere riciclato un numero infinito di volte. Nel 2025 ogni bottiglia dovrà contenere il 25% di PET riciclato e questo implica che dovremo raccogliere sempre di più bottiglie. Il cambiamento parte quindi da noi; dai nostri figli e nipoti, dalle nostre abitudini.

Dobbiamo essere prima di tutto informati, poi esigenti e pretendere come consumatori qualcosa di meglio, premiando le scelte coraggiose di chi va nella

ORA O MAI PI Abbiamo scritto che il cambiamento deve partire da noi, purtroppo, però, un cambiamento è già in atto: quello climatico. È un dato di fatto, non è più il momento di chiedersi se sia vero, se esiste, se non sia solo allarmismo...per troppo tempo abbiamo lasciato spazio a dubbi, incertezze e la volontà di non abbandonare lo status quo.

In qualità di “specie dominante” - e ricordiamoci che altre specie dominanti sul nostro pianeta si sono già estinte perché non in grado di adattarsi a un cambiamento - abbiamo dato prova di essere in grado di cambiare direzione, abbiamo imparato a depurare le acque re ue meglio tardi che mai abbiamo imparato a gestire aree marine protette in maniera ottimale certo non tutte ma qualcuna esempio virtuoso , abbiamo dimostrato che per proteggere alcuni animali siamo disposti anche a pagare anni fa letichettatura dolphin safe fin con essere un caso studio .

• Plastica e tutto quello che ruota intorno a questa parola: ad oggi, circa 150 milioni di tonnellate di plastica girano per i mari... e mediamente ogni anno che passa ne arrivano altre 8 milioni di tonnellate. urtroppo, anche se domani risolvessimo per magia queste tre sfide cruciali, non potremmo festeggiare lo scampato pericolo perché il fenomeno globale del cambiamento climatico necessità una grande presa di coscienza collettiva, un cambio di direzione netto, una necessità di adottare misure trasversali di mitigazione.

direzione giusta come sta facendo l’unione europea con la recente “SUP” – single use plastic - che vieta l’utilizzo di plastica usa e getta (una cannuccia, un bicchiere, un piatto o una forchetta che utilizziamo per qualche minuto è costituito da un materiale che non si degraderà per centinaia di anni).

Possiamo fare tanto tutti i giorni: riutilizzare gli oggetti il più possibile, avviare a riciclo gli imballaggi in plastica, accertarci di smaltire in modo corretto gli oggetti che usiamo in spiaggia come giocattoli, ombrelloni, ciabattine e raccogliere la plastica abbandonata sia che sia in mare che galleggia, sui fondali o sulle spiagge. Avviarla a riciclo o smaltirla correttamente oggi non è più un costo, né per noi né per i pescatori.

Questo è il momento di agire per la tutela dei nostri mari e di conseguenza per la salute del nostro pianeta e di noi stessi. Dobbiamo “ascoltare” di più il mondo sommerso, così meraviglioso e misterioso, ma anche così fragile e bisognoso di aiuto; cambiare le abitudini delle nostre famiglie, dei genitori e dei fratelli grandi e piccoli, diventando portatori di un grido di aiuto di tutte le creature del mare.

Il futuro di tutti è nelle nostre mani.

The time to act Man and nature a difficult co-e istence The life of our planet depends directly on the health of our oceans that offers us food, produces the oxygen we breathe and, literally, keeps us alive.

The consumption of resources by a growing world population and the simultaneous destruction of most ecosystems, has now reached a crisis point.

The vast majority of fish stocks are over-exploited because of ineffective fishing policies such as non-selective harvesting methods. There is increased consumption of sensitive species and together the effect is devastating.

How long will our oceans be able to withstand all this pressure?

In the last century, we have witnessed a true mass extinction. For example, in recent decades, many symbolic species (such as most sharks) have decreased by up to 90% and, in the seas around the world, there is an incredible impoverishment of fish resources. In addition to direct fishing, this impoverishment is also caused by accidental fishing, a side effect of large-scale fishing.

Some species are persecuted and taken because of alleged pseudo-medicinal powers, based on beliefs that lack any scientific evidence. Sharks are decimated for the removal of their finning: the same grim fate is granted to manta rays, hunted for their gills. Seahorses suffer, too, and all in the name of superstition.

In this catastrophic global scenario, I find that portraying untouched nature is often a difficult exercise. In my role as a photographer, I witness at first hand the impact of human activities on the environment, particularly on the Mediterranean coasts, outside the Marine Protected Areas.

Miles of coastline have been disfigured by the hand of man, with debris of many kinds…tyres, cans, rubble of inert materials, fishing lines and nets (a constant presence in all those areas not subject to protection)… River bottoms and lakes are littered with waste materials of all kinds, especially plastics of all types and a wide range of sources. Even in these critical conditions, however, nature shows its incredible ability to adapt. Abandoned nets become the substrate for the laying of squid eggs, blennies lay eggs in necks of bottles or abandoned cans, hundreds of trumpet fish have found an ideal dwelling place in an old, rusty sunken boat trailer covered with spirographs.

If underwater photography has any noble purpose, beyond that of celebrating the wonder of nature, then surely it is to raise awareness of all aspects and not just to reveal beauty, but also how tragically ugly it has become beneath the water surface.

The impact of plastic on our oceans is finally entering the public domain. We have begun to notice that sixty years of “disposable” goods have transformed our seas into garbage soups with potentially disastrous consequences for human life and health. There is an incredible diversity of problems, from the presence of particles derived from the destruction of plastic artefacts such as cans, bottles, cutlery, straws and much more, to the presence of primary microplastics, such as those nano beads and fibres contained in cosmetic products or in synthetic textile yarns that are inevitably introduced into the environment through washing our clothes.

The lack of purification plants, or the non-functioning of existing ones (as tragically revealed in an Italian survey of 2018) allows the spillage of countless tons of plastic every year into the sea. This is aside from the plastic waste abandoned by sport fishermen and the fishing industry, in general. Add to that,

the jettisoning of plastic toys, lighters, cigarette butts and other waste left directly on the coasts. Plastics have a direct impact on marine fauna causing death by suffocation when ingested by fish, marine mammals and birds. The indirect route lies through the transmission of noxious chemical substances assimilated by those same organisms that ultimately can cause genetic mutations, infertility and other pathologies in humans and other animals.

It is now known that many substances such as phthalates, ingested via microplastics from fish, enter the food chain and ultimately arrive on our dining tables. Some studies predict that, within thirty years, the weight of plastics discarded in our oceans will be equivalent to that of the biomass present therein. There is also likely to be a strong increase in plastic production over the next few decades. It really seems like an unstoppable race towards an inevitable and tragic destiny.

There is finally a glimmer of hope where greater global sensitivity can be glimpsed, even by industrial and manufacturing companies and institutions like the European Union. The EU on the one hand sets increasingly stringent targets for member states for collecting and recycling of plastics and yet,

NOW OR NEVER It is clear that change must start with us, unfortunately, however, a dramatic upheaval is already underway: climate change.

It is a fact: there is no longer the time left to ask whether it is true, if it exists or if it is not just alarmism ... For far too long we have left room for doubts, uncertainties and the strong desire not to abandon the status quo.

As a “dominant species” we have a proven ability to change direction – but we should ignore the fact that other dominant species on our planet have already become extinct because they could not adapt to change . e have learned to purify wastewater better late than never , we have learned to manage protected marine areas certainly not all but some are encouraging e amples , we have shown that, to protect some animals, we are also willing to pay - years ago the food labeling as “dolphin friendly” ended with a case study.

We have the capacity to act, even if our ecological footprint on the planet increases ine orably with growing population, ma ing the challenges more and more difficult.

If we refer to water alone, the most important challenges for the future are: • ccessibility to drin ing water a third of the world s population does not have guaranteed access to clean water.

• ver e ploitation of marine resources over of global fish stoc s are fully exploited.

• Plastic and everything that revolves around this word: to date, about 150 million tons of plastic have entered the seas ... and each year that passes that increases by another 8 million tons, on average.

Unfortunately, even if we solved these three crucial challenges by magic tomorrow, we could not celebrate a reduction in peril because the global phenomenon of climate change needs a great collective awareness with a change of direction and a need to adopt measures in mitigation that cut across all boundaries An old adage of ecology declares that “we did not inherit this planet from our parents, but we borrowed it from our children” ...

on the other hand, continues to overlook the priorities (reduction, reuse and mechanical recycling) when producing goods or packaging.

There are concrete projects that can deal with such large numbers of items that they can quickly yield important results – such as increasing the amount of recycling of PET, the material of bottles that can be recycled an infinite number of times. In 2025 each bottle must contain 25% of recycled PET and this implies that we will have to collect more and more used bottles. The change therefore starts with us; with our children, our grandchildren and with our habits.

Any change must start with us; from our children and our grandchildren which means a radical change in our habits. First of all we have to be aware of the problems, demanding change as consumers who want something better. Then, we must reward those who travel in the right direction in making courageous choices - as the EU is doing nowadays with “SUP” (single use plastic). The use of disposable plastic is prohibited: a straw, a glass, a plate or a fork that we use for only a few minutes consists of a material that will not degrade for hundreds of years.

Every day, we could do so much more by reusing items as much as possible, recycling plastic packagings, making sure we dispose, properly, of the items we use on the beach such as toys, umbrellas, slippers… We can collect abandoned plastic wherever it is, whether this is floating in the sea, settled on the seabed or cast up on beaches. Recycling or disposing of it properly today is no longer a cost, neither for us nor for fishermen.

This is the time to act in order to protect our seas and, consequently, promote the health of both our planet and ourselves. We must ‘listen’ more closely to the underwater world, so wonderful and mysterious, but also fragile and in need of care. This means changing the habits of our families, parents... siblings big and small and becoming the disseminators of a cry for help from all marine creatures.

Their future lies in our hands.

Pietro Formis Born in Milan in 1978, he has always been connected with the world of imagery and passionate about the sea since childhood.
