The parks capture the complexity and interdependencies of today’s society. Learning to solve problems by thinking on a single dimension is not how the world works today. Parks create economic, social and environmental value. Essentially, the National Park Service is a case study in sustainable development.

A POWERFUL LEGACY FUELS DANIELS’ VISION FOR TOMORROW
Dean Emeritus Bruce Hutton’s legacy with the National Park Service (NPS) and the Daniels College of Business spans decades of forward-thinking programs. He created Daniels’ first off-site and ethics based MBA, an early precursor to Dean Brent Chrite’s Daniels in Focus strategic vision of developing relevant, frame-breaking initiatives that produce market-ready graduates. Today, The Bruce Hutton Family Fund promises to be another leap forward for Daniels’ core strategic priorities, which include providing challenge-based opportunities for students to learn from one of America’s greatest assets for the public good: our parklands.
A SINGLE PREMIER PARTNER ADVANCES DANIELS’ FOUR CORE PRIORITIES The NPS gives students the chance to obtain a “business education” in an interconnected world where business, social and environmental issues are at play. Student research will also be actively applied by the NPS, elevating the stakes for real world learning. Partnering with NPS provides a rare opportunity to achieve each of the College’s four core priorities. It will help deliver transformational student experiences; promote market connectivity on a national scale; foster impactful faculty research and scholarship; and result in curricular and programmatic innovation.
A PASSION FOR AMERICA’S PARKS
Like many of us, Dean Emeritus Hutton became a passionate advocate for our national parks’ natural beauty and the role they play in our country’s heritage. In fact, 95 percent of U.S. households have said that protecting national parks, including historic sites, for current and future generations is important to them. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “the movement for the conservation of wildlife and the larger movement for the conservation of all our natural resources are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose, and method.” The fundamental question is how the NPS and its parks can better serve the public today while maintaining the quality of the parks for future generations. National parks are for the public good. They carry real value. This Fund will unleash wide-open opportunities to help uphold that value for generations to come.
IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES
The NPS and the Daniels College of Business will work together to actively take on issues and business opportunities with the National Park system or specific parks (e.g., Rocky Mountain National Park). The projects could be challenge-based platforms for our MBA or Executive MBA programs as well as independent studies and student clubs. The parks could also be a research and publishing opportunity for faculty. Our connecting points could be projects likely to affect all parks, park superintendents for individual parks, other not-for-profit or for-profit organizations that support or are affected by parks, or the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks (a national not-for-profit comprised of former employees of the NPS). We may also integrate other departments or colleges at the University of Denver on a project basis, and extend the opportunity to colleges and universities around the country. Ultimately, this is the chance for students to impact a cherished organization and take their learning to national playing fields.
“Parks contain information that does not exist anywhere else. They are profound resources offering unique, place based learning opportunities.” — National Park Advisory Board Report
THE IMPACT OF A $92 BILLION PREMIER PARTNERSHIP
How valuable is the NPS as a Daniels premier partner? Consider the economic impact of our park system: it supports thousands of jobs, sustains local businesses and adds $92 billion to the national economy. The business of parks management gives new meaning to “national treasure.” For Daniels, NPS is the opportunity to serve the public good while furthering the College’s goal of delivering game-changing programs that elevate the student experience with challenge-driven programs that are richly rewarding, relevant and diverse. There is the chance to experience the interface between governments, businesses and civil society players. As a national premier partner, NPS/Daniels programs will also serve as a proud model of engagement for other colleges, elevating our brand and commitment to challenge-based learning.

THE BRUCE HUTTON FAMILY ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP One of the hallmarks of a great university is the extent to which it can support, enable and fund the research and creative endeavors of its most critical resource, its faculty. The quality and reputation of an academic institution are largely commensurate with the institution’s proportions of endowed chairs, directors, professors and fellows.
Establishing the Bruce Hutton Family Endowed Fellowship will allow the Daniels College of Business the opportunity to ensure Dean Emeritus Hutton’s passion for sustainable and ethical business is secured in perpetuity. The fund will honor his wish to conduct student project work, research and provide opportunities for engaged learning.

“
Bruce’s philosophy is to work hard and be humble and he demonstrates that in his interaction with students, faculty and staff. According to Bruce, “accomplishments are never the result of one person’s hard work and dedication, rather, they are the result of the combined efforts of people who have the same vision.” He dedicates his time, knowledge and energy to countless nonprofit organizations and emphasized to his students the need to develop an ethical framework from which to view the world. Bruce has always been respected for his ability to think ahead and as a result has the ability to prepare students in business school's today to succeed in jobs that don't exist; to use technologies that haven't been invented and to solve problems that aren't problems yet. As dean, he brought cross disciplinary team teaching to the Daniels College of Business, a concept that was innovative and advanced for its time. As a result, he changed the institution’s culture by making it more collaborative and adding depth in the area of ethics and social good.
