FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is coaching?
What are some of the reasons someone might work with a coach?
Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
Individuals engage a coach for support in any area of their life: career, business, personal transitions, relationships, financial, life balance, spirituality and more. An individual might choose to work with a coach for many reasons, including but not limited to the following: • Something urgent, compelling or exciting is at stake (a challenge, stretch goal or opportunity) • A gap exists in knowledge, skills, confidence or resources • A desire to accelerate results and expand influence • A lack of clarity with choices to be made • Success has started to become problematic • Work and life are out of balance, creating unwanted consequences • Core strengths need to be identified, along with how best to leverage them
How does the coach help?
A professional coach possesses talents, techniques, skills and tools that support the client in making the right changes with greater ease and lasting effectiveness. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole. From this foundation, the coach assists the client by helping them to: • Discover what they truly desire • Recognize their strengths and assets • Uncover the unconscious thoughts and beliefs that hold them back • Explore new perspectives • Gain clarity on values and life purpose • Identify and end self-defeating habits and patterns • Clarify goals and create action plans to achieve them • Learn from mistakes and failures • Celebrate successes
Is coaching different from therapy, consulting or a supportive friend?
So often people confuse coaching with mentoring, consulting or therapy, and although coaching draws from these disciplines it is a distinct and independent discipline. Coaching is not to be seen as taking the place of these other professions, nor is it in conflict with them. In fact, coaching often works in harmony with these fields. Therapy is primarily for the purpose of diagnosing and healing mental illness. Coaching, on the other hand, supports fully functioning and capable individuals in making desired changes in their life and moving forward with intentional action. Consulting is about solving specific problems and providing expertise, direction and advice. Coaches use well-crafted questions, as well as other techniques, to help clients tap into their own experience, knowledge and wisdom. Mentoring refers to a developmental relationship between a more experienced mentor and a less experienced partner in order to obtain information, good examples and advice as they advance. Although highly skilled mentors often provide some level of coaching, the focus is on information and teaching. A supportive friend can be a wonderful sounding board and cheerleader yet cannot provide the powerful questions, keen observations and direct communication that a coach can offer to unlock greater awareness. A professional coach brings unique skills, new perspectives and objectivity without emotional attachment to the client’s choice.
What does the coaching process look like?
Coaching typically begins with a personal interview (either face-to-face or by teleconference call) to assess the individual’s current opportunities and challenges, define the scope of the relationship, identify priorities for action and establish specific desired outcomes. The typical scenario is for a coach and client to meet privately, one-on-one, two to four times per month for up to an hour. Meetings may be held in person, by phone/teleconference or by email, although phone/teleconference is most common. Between scheduled coaching sessions, the individual may be asked to complete specific actions that support the achievement of one’s personally prioritized goals. The coach may provide additional resources in the form of relevant articles, checklists, assessments or models to support the individual’s thinking and actions.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Continued...
How long does a coach typically work with a client?
What does it cost to hire a coach?
According to the International Coach Federation survey, the duration of coaching relationships averages around nine months. However, clients often see the long-term benefits of working with a coach even after they have accomplished specific goals and/or projects and they continue the relationship focusing on other aspects of their life. Engagements may be as short as three to four months or extend beyond a year.
The cost of coaching varies widely based on the coach’s experience, credentials and area of specialization. Often a personal coach will charge less than an executive coach. Group coaching sessions are less expensive than private one-on-one sessions. A coach may charge by the month, by the program, by the project or by the hour. Some coaches offer sliding scales for clients who cannot afford the full fee.
How can I determine if professional coaching is right for me?
What are the qualifications of a coach?
To determine whether you could benefit from coaching, start by summarizing what you would expect to accomplish in coaching. When someone has a fairly clear idea of the desired outcome, a coaching partnership can be a useful tool for developing a strategy for how to achieve that outcome with greater ease. Since coaching is a partnership, ask yourself whether collaboration, other viewpoints and new perspectives are valued. Also, ask yourself whether you are ready to devote the time and the energy to making real changes. If the answer is yes, then coaching may be a beneficial way to grow and develop.
Many coaches have professional certifications from coaching schools; some coaches are credentialed by the International Coach Federation (ICF). Since coaching is a self-regulating profession without clearly defined standards of competency and ethics, we highly recommend that you verify the credentials of any prospective coach. Seek a coach who has specific training and knowledge to serve as a coach. Hiring a coach who has been trained through an ICF approved program is an excellent choice. The ICF is the premier organization for professional coaches and has established a Code of Ethics and Core Coaching Competencies to ensure excellence in service to clients.
How do I find the right coach for me?
Trust and openness are necessary elements for a successful coaching experience, so perhaps the most important criterion in hiring a coach is rapport and chemistry between the client and coach. Beyond this, consider the coach’s background, credentials, areas of expertise and fees. Here are a few other tips: • Interview more than one coach to determine “what feels right” in terms of the chemistry. Coaches are accustomed to being interviewed and an introductory conversation of this type is usually free of charge. • Look for stylistic similarities and differences between the coach and you and how these might support your growth as an individual or the growth of your team. • Discuss your goals for coaching within the context of the coach’s specialty or the coach’s preferred way of working with an individual or team. • Talk with the coach about what to do if you ever feel things are not going well; make some agreements up front on how to handle questions or problems. • Remember that coaching is a partnership, so be assertive about talking with the coach about any concerns.
Is there proof coaching works?
Yes! The ICF Global Coaching Client Study shows most clients reported improved work performance, better business management, more efficient time management, increased team effectiveness and more growth and opportunities. The same study found that coaching clients noted greater self-confidence, enhanced relationships, more effective communication skills, better work-and-life balance and an improvement in wellness. Nearly 70% of individuals indicated they had at least made back their initial investment. The median suggests that a client who achieved financial benefit from coaching can typically expect an ROI of more than three times the amount spent.
