D e ar D anie ls Communit y, It is with much pride and excitement that I share with you our 2011-2012 progress on the Daniels Tomorrow strategic plan. In Jim Collins’ book Good to Great, Collins likens an organization to a massive, heavy flywheel and the effort it takes to change the organization is similar to the effort of rotating that flywheel. The first turn takes tremendous effort, but each one thereafter gets easier. These past five years, the College has completed hundreds of action steps to achieve our strategic goals, and as a result, Daniels has undergone an exciting transformation. In 2012, we completed our first flywheel rotation—and we are gaining momentum. Here are just a few of our accomplishments this year: » We raised $18.6 million from alumni, corporate

and community-building programs, such as Voices of Experience, Daniels Nights, Daniels Week and more.

» We delivered 50 custom Executive Education programs for leading Colorado companies such as CenturyLink, Starz, Kaiser Permanente and Centura Health. » We hired 10 new faculty positions and filled four endowed professorships.

I am so grateful to—and humbled by—the Daniels community for your hard work and commitment to moving Daniels forward. Many faculty, staff, alumni, volunteers and friends have contributed their time and resources to help us achieve our objectives, and we simply would not be where we are today without your support and enthusiasm. With warm regards,

In spring 2012, the International MBA began using the Global Mindset Inventory—a tool that allows organizations to measure their capacity for success in global environments—as a pre- and post-program assessment tool. Daniels recognizes the demand for professionals capable of using data to make strategic business decisions. In fall 2012, we revamped our MS Business Intelligence as a program that builds professionals capable of analyzing and using big data to their organizations’ advantage. Half of the Taylor gift was earmarked to establish scholarships for internships—with businesses, nonprofit and governmental, and other organizations—and we awarded the first Taylor Internship Scholar this fall. We continue to add new corporate partners and strengthen corporate engagement, particularly with international companies. Philosophical Statement of Schol arship In spring 2012, Daniels faculty approved a Philosophical Statement of Scholarship, a document that was drafted by a faculty committee in 2011. The scholarship document addresses the proper balance of teaching, scholarship and service among Daniels faculty. The finalized statement also led to a revision of one proof point of the College’s mission statement to more clearly reflect the scholarship emphasis at Daniels. The new point is as follows: Our faculty contributes new knowledge through high-quality research with a primary emphasis on discipline and applied publications.

Re accreditatio n Prepar atio n In preparation for our reaccreditation in 2014, in summer 2012 we completed the Business Maintenance Review Application for the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSBInternational). This process helps the AACSB focus on our educational improvement, strategic management and fulfillment of the Daniel mission since our last reaccreditation in 2010.

2 0 11 — 2 0 1 2 P R O G R E S S R E P O R T

Across the country and around the world, Daniels is becoming known for our work and leadership in three areas—ethics, globalization and entrepreneurship. This year we continued to build our strengths and reach in these areas.

Ethics, Social Responsibility and Sustainability

T

he Institute for Enterprise Ethics made notable progress this year, offering more than a dozen programs on the areas of corporate governance, ethics and social responsibility. These programs invited C-suite executives, governance and compliance officers,

and other business leaders and practitioners to share and exchange ideas through a roundtable discussion format. Topics discussed include the Dodd-Frank whistleblowing regulations, middle management and ethical behavior, and the return on investment of corporate social responsibility and sustainability. In addition, Dr. Daniel Sweeney, director of the Institute, launched a faculty interview series, discussing various business topics with Daniels professors. The success of Daniels students at several ethical case competitions this year suggests that the College’s long-standing efforts to encourage ethical

Race & Case

thinking and integrate ethics into our curriculum are indeed effective. In March 2012, Daniels students won the Race & Case business ethics case competition—our third win in four years. In April, a team of graduate students took first place at the Aspen Institute’s 2012 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition, besting students at 24 other leading business colleges. In other awards news, Daniels Director of Ethics Integration Bruce Hutton was a finalist for the 2012 Daniel L. Ritchie Award, sponsored by the Colorado Ethics in Business Alliance. Finally, Daniels continues to build partnerships with like-minded organizations to further our work in the area of business ethics and sustainability. This year we teamed up with CORE—Colorado’s sustainable business association—and Natural Capitalism Solutions to offer a new certification program in Sustainability Leadership and Implementation.

Entrepren eurship an d I n n ovatio n We strive to make Daniels a hub of entrepreneurial information and activity in our region and beyond. This year we created an Office of Entrepreneurship and appointed Stephen Miller as the director of entrepreneurship. Miller will deeply integrate entrepreneurship into our programs and establish an entrepreneurial resource center for our extended community of businesses, alumni and students. Entrepreneurship and innovation are encouraged at every level of the Daniels experience including: » A hub for innovation: Our location provides our faculty and students with real-world entrepreneurial experiences and unparalleled internship and networking opportunities. » An enterprising curriculum: We offer undergraduate and graduate-level concentrations and certificates in innovation and entrepreneurship. Our Social Capital Projects provide our students a connection to the community while building their entrepreneurial ideas. We are exploring additional degree programs in entrepreneurship as well. » A campus with entrepreneurial energy: Through clubs, organizations and co-curricular activities, Daniels students can participate in case competitions, panel discussions and networking with alumni, faculty and community partners involved in innovative industries and entrepreneurial ventures. There is an Elevator Pitch Competition sponsored by the student-led Daniels Entrepreneurship Society, a living and learning student cohort called Creativity and Entrepreneurship, and consulting through the Daniels Consulting Firm. » Pioneering students and alumni: Daniels Pioneers don’t wait until they graduate to start a business or launch a product. One-year MBA students Jake Sager and Will Knorr were freshmen when they founded Global CaféNation, a sustainable coffee company. Alumna Abbie Sparks launched her jewelry collection while she was an MBA student at Daniels.

Ren ovati n g M argery Reed Ha ll The renovation of Margery Reed Hall is an important project for Daniels and one where we focused our fundraising efforts in 2011-2012. The budget for this project is $8.5 million and we raised a majority of the funds prior to beginning construction in 2013. The College will continue to raise funds throughout 2013 to enhance the student learning experience in Margery Reed Hall. Many alumni and friends have generously donated funds for the Margery Reed renovation, including Executive Advisory Board member Brad Busse (BSAcc 1980) and DU Board of Trustees member Scott Reiman (BSBA 1987). In 2012, we selected an architect and a construction company for the Margery Reed renovation. SlaterPaull Architects—a third-generation architecture practice in Denver that has focused on sustainable design practices since the 1990s— designed the project. Hyder Construction, a company with deep roots in the Denver metropolitan area and across Colorado, is providing construction services. Hyder has renovated other buildings on the DU campus, including Cherrington Hall and the beautiful Sie Cheou-Kang Pavilion. We began construction on Margery Reed in January 2013.

Introducing the Taylor Family Undergraduate Career Services Center As discussed on page 8, DU alumni Andy and Barbara Taylor gave $5 million to Daniels in 2012. The funds were used to establish the Taylor Family Undergraduate Career Services Center. The Taylor Center provides an innovative and in-depth portfolio of services to help undergraduate students explore business majors and career paths, prepare for internships and interviews, advance their professional development and build business networks. Of the $5 million gift, $2.5 million is earmarked for scholarships for Barbara & Andy Taylor

internships—with businesses, nonprofits, governmental and other organizations— and the University matched this amount. The Taylors have given a total of $11 million to the Daniels College of Business. In 2011, they gave $5 million toward the previously established $1 million Taylor Scholarship endowment, which the University matched. The total Taylor Scholarship fund is now $11 million.

n August 2012, Daniels hired a full-time human resources generalist, Marcy Cozzens (MPS 2009)—the first Daniels staff member ever to be solely dedicated to the HR function. In this role, Cozzens is establishing processes and procedures for the College HR function and oversees all recruitment, employee relations, performance management and training issues. Cozzens immediately launched an employee engagement effort to help make Daniels an excellent place to work, thereby making the student experience as positive as it can be. Stay tuned for more on our HR efforts in 2013.

Buildi n g an Entrepren eurship Progr a m In January 2013, Daniels welcomed a new senior director of entrepreneurship. Stephen Miller (BA 1987) coordinates all facets of the College’s entrepreneurship efforts and will work to develop an entrepreneurship framework for student learning and create strategic partnerships with area entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurship organizations, businesses and peer institutions. In addition, he will help design and launch new entrepreneurship activities and co-curricular programming.

DONOR PROFILE Creating a Bricks-and-Mortar Legacy Brad Busse (BSAcc 1980) Brad Busse (BSAcc 1980) has served the University of Denver in many different ways, but when the opportunity arose to support the Daniels College of Business Margery Reed Hall renovation project—which breaks ground in 2013—he was eager to help. Service is nothing new to Busse, who received the prestigious DU Founders Day Community Service Award in 2011. He has actively served on the Daniels Executive Advisory Board for many years. Busse previously held the position of chair from 2009 to 2012 and helped reinvigorate and grow the board to 25 engaged members—including the CEO of Visa and the former chairman of Newmont Mining. He also has served on the School of Accountancy Alumni Advisory Board since the early 1990s and currently serves on the DU Athletic Affairs Committee.

My family and I have supported various things to facilitate the student experience at DU, but this was a chance to show some leadership for a project that is very important to the College,” says Busse, whose name will grace the only tiered classroom in Margery Reed. “Hopefully others will also step forward to do something similar to help raise money for this and other projects. —Brad Busse (BSAcc 1980)

Busse has also given much more than his time. In 1997, he established a gift to pay the salary of a staff person charged with recruiting students, faculty and staff to get involved with the Graduates Involved in Volunteer Efforts (GIVE) program. In 2006, he established the Busse Family Endowed Scholarship Fund to support undergraduate students in the DU men’s swimming program (Busse came to DU on a swimming scholarship and eventually became team captain). “I wouldn’t be where I am in life if it wasn’t for the scholarships I received,” says Busse. “I want to repay DU for the opportunity they gave me.” After graduation, it didn’t take long for Busse to give back to his alma mater—in fact, his first gift came just three years into his career, which he began at Arthur Andersen. In 1985, he joined Daniels & Associates, which was acquired by RBC Capital Markets (a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Canada) in 2007. Today, he is a managing director and provides senior industry coverage to the entire U.S. investment banking platform for RBC. More than anything, Busse admits, he gives because he is grateful. “I had a great educational experience at DU and was able to reach my academic and athletic goals here. I couldn’t have done it without support. So today, that’s where I focus my energy as a proud alumnus.” 2 0 11 — 2 0 1 2 P R O G R E S S R E P O R T

Meet Taylor Scholar Cara Sylvers

Ms. Lori K. Faber

Cara Sylvers graduated from high school in Houston, Texas, in 2007, and although she wanted to go to college, she was concerned about going into debt to pay for it. “I decided to start at San Jacinto Community College,” says Sylvers, the only child of a widowed parent. To pay for college, Sylvers worked two jobs—at a bank and a restaurant—while taking classes part time.

Sylvers intended to eventually transfer to a public Texas university, but in spring 2012, she learned through an instructor about the Accounting Scholars Development Program at Daniels. The program brings outstanding community college students from the African American, Latino and Native American communities to DU to learn more about accounting and business. She applied on a whim, was accepted and participated in the week-long program in summer 2012. Sylvers enjoyed the experience so much, she decided DU was where she wanted to finish her education. Cost was still a worry, but several scholarships came together to make it possible for Sylvers to come to DU in fall 2012. “So many people helped me get here, and it speaks volumes about how much the faculty and staff care about students,” she says. Sylvers is a Taylor Scholar and also receives support from the J.J. Johnston Endowed Scholarship, the Shroyer Endowed Scholarship and the DU Pathways Scholarship. Sylvers will graduate with her bachelor’s and master’s of accountancy in 2015. She accepted a 2013 summer internship from Ernst & Young. Someday, she wants to work in accounting for a nonprofit or other “helping” organization.

DONOR PROFILE Strengthening the Daniels Pioneer Network Britt and Jason Urband (BSBAs 2005) When Britt Tremblay (BSBA 2005) and Jason Urband (BSBA 2005) graduated from the University of Denver, they knew they would happily give back as alumni. The Urbands are Daniels Dean’s Society members—Daniels donors who contribute at least $1,000 annually to the College— and volunteer their time at DU and Daniels. Both serve on the Daniels Alumni Advisory Board and offer career advice to students seeking internships and jobs through interview preparation, résumé critiques and regular guest speaking. Britt has mentored Reiman School of Finance students interested in the finance field. As Britt puts it, remaining involved “isn’t a completely selfless activity. We get a lot out of talking to students and helping them find their way,” she says. ”We also know that the better Daniels is, the more value our degrees have. As young alumni, getting involved is a great way to build a stronger Daniels network.”

DU helped us in so many ways,” says Jason, who met Britt when the pair worked together as admissions fellows (they married in 2006). “We met each other at DU, many of our friends today are from DU and our education helped us get where we are in our careers. Hopefully, the assistance we provide will help current students make a smooth transition to the workforce, encouraging them to give back and further strengthen the Daniels alumni network. —Britt and Jason Urband (BSBAs 2005)

The Urbands each received scholarships as students. For Britt, scholarships led her to choose DU over other schools; for Jason, the support came midway through his education. They both participated in campus activities as well—Jason was a SOAR program leader and both were campus tour guides. Today, the couple’s lives are busy—Britt has worked her way up to vice president at J.P. Morgan and Jason is a senior associate at Grey Mountain Partners, a private equity firm. They also have two young children. Still, supporting their alma mater is a priority. “I know some think giving has to be in large amounts of money or quantities of time,” Jason says. “But our feeling is that there’s always an opportunity to give something, even if it’s just a little of your time or a small gift. It’s fulfilling and fun for us. Life and business are based on relationships and we’ve been fortunate enough to build many over the years as we’ve given back to Daniels.” 2 0 11 — 2 0 1 2 P R O G R E S S R E P O R T

A Leader and a Scholar Meet Daniels Scholar Chris Mueller, MBA Student Chris Mueller chose the U.S. Military Academy at West Point because he sought a challenge and the opportunity to develop as a leader. Though he quickly discovered in college that he wanted his career to be in Army aviation, it took Mueller just a few years of service—as a helicopter pilot and company commander in Afghanistan, Iraq, Hawaii and Fort Hood, Texas—to decide that he would eventually seek an MBA. Mueller applied to the Army’s Expanded Graduate School Program, which aims to retain and help junior officers develop critical skills. His search for the right graduate business school quickly led him to Daniels. “I immediately liked the College’s commitment to ethics,” Mueller says. “The Daniels curriculum focuses on much more than the technical aspects of business. Daniels shares my commitment to ethics, and I know the curriculum will keep me on the right path.” The Army gave Mueller some financial support, but the government’s fiscal constraints meant he would need additional funding for Daniels to become a reality. To his surprise, he received the Daniels Scholarship and a graduate assistantship to make ends meet. “It was very special and very humbling,” says Mueller. “Daniels was so helpful in finding a way for me to get here.” Mueller’s wife is the great niece of the late JJ Johnston, a legendary professor at DU and Daniels for more than 60 years. The family legacy means a lot to Mueller, but he is committed to Daniels for his own reasons too. “Daniels has entrusted me with a lot,” he says. “I hope I can prove myself as a student here. Long term, I want to help the College in the same way they’ve helped me.”
