EXPERIENCE

SEE HOONG PING DANIEL TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY DECEMBER 2018

Urban communities in cities engage and operate within various moments of escapism within the urban fabric. These moments of escapism are formed by pockets of activities, architectural landmarks, significant cultural and communal engagements, transit nodes and places of work and leisure. People gravitated to these escapist moments due to the multilayered meaning and significance, often with more awareness and consciousness of place and people with an extended engagement timeframe. However the transition experience between these moments in the urban fabric are insignificant and temporary. The urban transitional moments lack consciousness of people and place, with no continuation of activities and engaging interactions within the urban transit community, creating a temporal void in the transition experience. This thesis will explore the research question “Can architectural escapism elements facilitate the expansion of temporal consciousness for an urban transitional moment?” The thesis investigates Tuan and Dainton’s notion of escapism and temporal consciousness theory through architectualization of elements within the theory and formulating design strategies. These design strategies are then used to investigate Tuan and Dainton’s theory in expanding a temporary urban transitional moment to create a multi-layered spatial engagement within the urban transit community that is conscious about the local people and place, engaging in informative interactions, empowering users with the autonomy in power of choice to access and participate, and has an extended significance in meaning, activity and timeframe amidst the insignificant temporary moment of urban transit.

The thesis investigates the use of Tuan and Dainton’s notion of escapism and temporal consciousness theory in expanding a temporary urban transitional moment to create a multi-layered spatial engagement within the urban transit community that is conscious about the local people and place, engaging in informative interactions, empowering users with the autonomy in power of choice to access and participate, and has an extended significance in meaning, activity and timeframe amidst the insignificant temporary moment of urban transit. A microcosm of consciousness is form within this expanded urban transitional moment, transforming it into a moment of escapism. Tuan’s escapism theory demonstrates the different ways escapism can be found and expressed in architecture. It is noted that both physical architectural elements and non physical perceptional elements interrelate and affect escapism in architecture. The seven elements of escapism are accessibility, manipulability, democratic level, predictability, memory, temporal quality and perception of reality. Dainton’s notion of temporal consciousness theory discusses the relationship between our awareness of time and how it affects our perception of people and place. The thesis explores how the expansion of temporal consciousness through the three categories of cinematic, retentional and extentional models can affect the urban transit community’s perception of reality.

MICROCOSM OF N The S siteCat Jalan I ORajaULautSis chosen N E S S to carry out the thesis research, it is adjacent to DBKL tower and the Bandaraya LRT Station. This site is an urban transitional space located among the various moments or nodes identified in this site analysis drawing. The process of producing this analysis drawings allows for critical analysis of the surrounding context, selecting and highlighting the important and relevant moments. This temporary urban transitional moment has a high density urban transitional community which transits between the LRT and KTM stations, the offices, shopping enclave as well as the cultural and historical nodes. The highly diverse nature of the surrounding context and the transit community allows for an in depth application of the design strategies identified earlier to create an Urban Transit Community Centre.

The design strategies is derived from the literature review of Tuan’s theory of escapism and architectualized analysis of the elements of escapism, literature reviews of Dainton’s theory of temporal consciousness and also the site analysis study. The three main strategies of multi-layered spatial experience, autonomy in power of choice and informative interaction as shown here represents an attempt to create a framework to design the urban transit community centre. These strategies will help facilitate the expansion of temporal consciousness for an urban transitional moment at my site.

ESCAPISM IS THE NOTION OF ESCAPING FROM REALITY INTO THE PERCEIVED REALITY, IT IS A PHENOMENA THAT IS REGARDED NEGATIVELY BY SOCIETY AS AN ESCAPE INTO FANTASY AND THE MAKE-BELIEVE. ACCORDING TO YI-FU TUAN, ESCAPISM IS MORE THAN JUST DRUGS AND PSYCHEDELICS, IT IS AN EXPRESSION AND REPRESENTATION OF OUR INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE SELF. ESCAPISM ENCOMPASSES THE CULTURAL REPRESENTATION OF SOCIETY, THE SENSE OF PLACE AND SENSE OF SELF OF COMMUNITIES AND ALSO THE RIGHT TO OCCUPY AND RECLAIM SPACES IN THE NATURAL AND URBAN WORLD. THE DIFFERENT TYPES AND ELEMENTS Of ESCAPISM CAN BE USED TO CONSTRUCT A SPACE WITHIN THE CHAOTIC URBAN REALM FOR PEOPLE TO EXPORE, CONSTRUCT AND PERCEIVE THEIR OWN IDEAL REALITY AND EXPRESS A SENSE OF PLACE AND IDENTITY.
