DESIGN

STATEMENT

RQ: In what ways can a building monumentalized identity through the different notions of spatial narration? My thesis is that a building can monumentalized identity through the different notions of spatial narrative. A building as a monument can be more than just a symbol and a physical statement of the people. Monumentality helps narrate the sense of place and identity of the people, this narration should embody and express the collective will and thoughts of the people who built them and help forms the identity of the city and community. Klang, a transit city straddling between the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and the country's bustling trading gateway of Port Klang, faces an identity crisis. There is a gradual lost of relationship between the city and its inhabitants with the surrounding context, the sense of connection to its historical trading roots and the Klang river is nonexistent. Some of the city's greatest monuments such as markets, food institutions and religious buildings are in shambles, these are the people's monuments that express self identity and culture. The proposed museum aims to be more than just a physical vessel of information, the museum will be a monument of the people, forming a link between the past, present and future through physical symbolism, social associations and the projected collective ideals of society. The building spaces and spatial layout will convey elements of gesture, routes and direction in relation to the surrounding site context, and the experience of walking through the building is a coherent narrative of the place, people, history and urban spatial narration. The people's monument will serve as an anchor to the ever changing urban backdrop, providing a fixed reference in the urban narrative for the users to interpret, interact and experience. By embodying the narrative qualities of place, history, culture and people into the physical layout of the building, the museum is a representation of the social and cultural associations of the people with the place. The People's Monument will be a beacon, a monument owned and formed by the people and place and is a representation of the ideals and identity of Klang.
