Robert Bonfiglio, Harmonica Virtuoso states, “I just performed the Villa-Lobos Harmonica Concerto with Maestro Raffaele Ponti and I was stunned by what an unbelievable conductor he is; wonderful, dazzling, exciting, I don’t know what to say other than “very musical.” Raffaele is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra (KY), Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (FL), Genesee Symphony Orchestra (NY), former Principal Conductor and Music Director, now Regular Guest Conductor of I.K.O. Italia Konzert Opera International, Founding Director of Festival di Musica da Camera in Ripatransone, Italy, and continues to appear with prominent orchestras around the United States and Europe. Michael Ludwig, Concert Violinist writes, “Raffaele brings extraordinary artistry and incredible excitement and passion to the podium, a musician of great sensitivity and high artistry. Raffaele had a wonderful rapport with the orchestra. He has tremendous skill in communicating his musical thoughts and expressions, and is extremely efficient in his rehearsing method. Most importantly, Raffaele approaches the music with a great artistic sensibility. His interpretations are passionate, exciting, and well thought out. He brings great excitement and enthusiasm that is palpable to the concert goers, as well as the orchestra.” Executive Director, Daniel Sene states, “Raffaele is an extremely skilled conductor who achieves great results with the musicians he works with. The orchestra respects his musical vision and responds with great performances. As a result of his leadership, our orchestra has seen phenomenal growth in season ticket sales. Additionally, Raffaele understands the role of a modern Artistic Director and thus relates extremely well with patrons and donors.” This season Raffaele led the Buffalo Philharmonic and Erie Philharmonic with immediate return engagements, and makes his debut as Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony (FL). Recent engagements include the Buffalo Philharmonic, Erie Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Paducah Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Genesee Symphony, Sofia Symphony, Varna State Opera, Orchestra di Pescara, Austin Symphony, Siena Sinfonia, Binghamton Philharmonic, Elgin Symphony, Teatro Lirico d’europe, Billings Symphony, Italia Konzert Opera, Utica Symphony, Schenectady Symphony, Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, and Syracuse Symphony. Steve Schaffner – PSYO Conductor
What will Independence Bank do now that we’ve been ranked as the 2nd Best Community Bank in the nation?
Everything we can to become #1.
The old standard has never been our standard at Independence Bank. We’ve always insisted on putting our customers and our community first. We’ve always insisted on doing things the right way while remaining financially strong.
That’s one reason why Independence Bank was recently ranked 2nd in the nation and 1st in Kentucky by the American Bankers Association. And, rest assured, that’s the kind of recognition that will make us work even harder.
Steve Schaffner recently retired after enjoying his twenty second year of service as Orchestra Director at Cape Girardeau Central High School and Cape Central Junior High School. Praised for his instructional leadership and commitment to music education, Mr. Schaffner was honored by the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce as the 2006 Educator of the Year. In 2003 he was the recipient of the Edna C. Kinder “Excellence in Education Award.” His former students have honored him for Who’s Who Among America’s High School Teachers. Prior to joining Cape Girardeau School District, Mr. Schaffner was the Orchestra Director and taught guitar for five years at Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School in Augusta, Georgia. He replaced his Orchestra Director, Melvin Gilhaus, upon Gilhaus’ retirement in 1991. Steve, a native Missourian, received his BME from Augusta State University and his MME at Southeast Missouri State University. Before earning his degrees, Schaffner toured to 48 states and Canada as a fiddler and guitarist with several nationally known Nashville recording artists. He continues his love of commercial music with the band “Manitou” in the Cape Girardeau area. He has directed and performed in Japan, England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria and was a part of Southeast Missouri Symphony’s China Tour in 2009. He performs regularly as a member of Trio Girardeaux and has been a member of the Paducah, Kentucky Symphony and the Southeast Missouri Symphony for twenty two years.

Program Notes Dance Overture, op. 62
February 1 Concert Paul Creston (1906-1985)
Born Giuseppe Guttoveggio in 1906, Italian American composer Paul Creston began his music career early, taking piano lessons at the age of 8 and went on to train with G.A. Randegger and Gaston Diethier, and to become Pietro Yon’s organ apprentice. Creston was a completely self-taught in compositional techniques and harmony. Creston was an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity. His compositional style was fairly conservative with a sturdy rhythmic component. Creston was one of the most performed American composers of the 40s and 50s. Many of his works have become staples of the wind band repertoire.
His Dance Overture was completed in December 1954. It was commissioned to be performed in Miami at the 1955 convention of the National Federation of Music Clubs. He uses one basic theme out of which he develops romanticisms of recognizable dance forms from the nations whose flags fly in the Florida sands. An original piece, composed for a purpose, this piece still has the Creston style to it. This piece morphs from a basic musical idea into a Spanish bolero then to an English country-dance followed by a French loure and finally ending in a climactic American square-dance.
Rites of Tamburo
Robert W. Smith (b. 1958)
Robert W. Smith (b. 1958) has over 600 publications in print. As a conductor and clinician, Mr. Smith has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe, South America and Australia. He has recently completed the production of Symphony No. 3 (Don Quixote), the fourth in a series of compact disc recordings of his best-known works for concert band. In addition, he is co-creator of the Expressions Music Curriculum. This comprehensive Pre-K through 12 music program includes Band Expressions, an innovative new approach to teaching music through the band. Rites of Tamburo, composed in 1999, is an exciting programmatic piece for a younger aged concert ensemble. The “mysterious” introduction features, bells, and chimes playing a repetitive flowing rhythm while the horn and flute play half and quarter note chant-like lines that weave in and out of each other. The band adds to the mystery by making hissing and breathing effects while this is all happening. After this introduction, Smith asks for “overwhelming energy” as the woodwinds establish the new tempo with a repetitive syncopated rhythm. Brass builds bell-tone chords, leading to a cluster-chord where Smith writes “pick-a-note” and then finally pushes into a “comfortable groove”.
Symphony No. 2
Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943)
Sergei Rachmaninoff is known as one of the last connections between 19th century romanticism and the modern era. He was born in Semyonovo, Russia to aristocratic parents. His mother gave him his first piano lessons and realized early that her son had extraordinary musical talent. So, Rachmaninoff’s parents hired Anna Ornatskaya, St. Petersburg musician to be his personal instructor. Rachmaninoff received a scholarship to the St. Petersburg conservatory when his family moved there after their wealth collapsed. However, he failed all of his exams and was moved to the conservatory in Moscow where Nikolai Zverev’s strict work ethic helped Rachmaninoff stabilize his career.

Paducah Bank is
VERY PROUD to provide a helping hand to the Paducah Symphony Orchestra!
Let the
music
Rachmaninoff began composing actively until March 1897 when his Symphony No. 1 received horrible reviews. This caused him to sink into a depression that left him unable to compose for three years. After hypnotic treatments, he recovered and composed actively again for 10 years. In 1917 his estate was taken by the Leninist regime and he moved with his wife and two children to New York. There he openly criticized the Soviet government to the New York Times and was banned from all concert halls and conservatories throughout the USSR. Written between 1906 and 1907, Symphony No. 2 was premiered in St. Petersburg on February 8, 1908 and was conducted by the composer himself. The score is dedicated to Sergei Taneyev, a Russian composer, theorist, teacher, author and student of Tchaikovsky. When this piece was composed, Rachmaninoff had just had two seasons as the conductor of the Imperial Opera at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Although he was successful in the field, Rachmaninoff felt that he was a composer first and foremost and that the conducting schedule was taking away from the time he needed to spend composing. He moved his wife and daughter to Dresden, Germany to spend the majority of his time composing and because of the political unrest in Russia. He stayed there for three years with his family and spent summers at his in-law’s estate of Ivanovka. During this time he wrote his Second Symphony. Due to the ill welcome that his First Symphony received, Rachmaninoff was unconvinced of his writing ability, especially when it came to symphonies. It took him months of revisions before he finally premiered his Second Symphony which was accepted with thunderous applause. He received a Glinka award for this piece ten months later. This success returned Rachmaninoff’s sense of worth as a symphonist.

Fabio Bidini – Piano At the age of five, Fabio Bidini was given his first piano lessons and half year later he played his first public concert. In the following years he won eleven of the most important Italian piano competitions, including always the Audience Prize as well as all the special prizes. He made his final graduation with “Magna cum Laude” and was one of the youngest graduates ever of the prestigious “Conservatorio Santa Cecilia” in Rome. After winning top prizes in the most famous international piano competitions his sensational success at the Busoni and at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition opened him the door to a constantly growing international career. Fabio Bidini now is recognized as one of the foremost young pianists to have emerged from Italy since the days of Michelangeli. His outstanding piano playing that combines technical wizardry with poetic lyricism and his fascinating culture of the attack of the keyboard brought him to have a glowing London debut in the Barbican Center with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas in the presence of Sir Georg Solti, Barbara Hendricks and James Galway in 1992. Shortly after, he had his highly acclaimed North American debut with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under Joel Levi. Fabio Bidini´s discography comprises thirteen CDs of leading recording companies like BMG, Classichord, Musikstrasse, EPR, True Sounds, among others. In 2005 Fabio Bidini accepted a professorship in the piano departement of the “Universität der Künste – Berlin”. In 2009 he got appointed one of the few highest chairs for piano in Germany at the world-renown “Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler” in Berlin and teaches as a professor at this prestigious university since then. He is an official Steinway Artist.

Program Notes Cuban Overture
March 1 Concert George Gershwin (1898-1937)
An American composer and pianist, George Gershwin’s compositions bridged from popular to classical genres and his most popular melodies are known around the world. Among his best known works are Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and the opera Porgy and Bess. He studied under Charles Hambitzer and his composition teacher was Rubin Goldmark and Henry Cowell. His career began as a song plugger but quickly moved to Broadway theatre compositions. He moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger where he began to compose An American in Paris. Once he returned to New York City, he wrote Porgy and Bess with his brother Ira and the author DuBose Heyward. Gershwin passed away in 1937 from a brain tumor but not before moving to Hollywood and composed numerous film scores.

Cuban Overture is a symphonic overture or “tone poem” for orchestra. Originally titled Rumba, it had its premiere in at New York’s now-demolished Leisohn Stadium in August 1932 as part of a New York Philharmonic All-Gershwin concert. Three months after the premiere, Gershwin retitled the piece Cuban Overture at the Metropolitan Opera to circumvent giving the audience the idea that it was just a novelty piece. According to Gershwin the new title provided “a more just idea of the character and intent of the music.” The overture is ruled by Caribbean rhythms and inherently Cuban percussion. It is an exciting work with just enough intricacy and sophistication. Heavily influenced by Cuban music and dance, its main theme was influenced by a then current hit by Ignacio Piñeiro, “Échale Salsita”.
Piano concerto in G Major
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Joseph-Maurice Ravel, a French composer most well-known for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental consistencies and effects, was one of the most renowned composers of Impressionist music. Born near the Spanish border of France, at the age of 14, when his father’s engineering work brought the family to Paris, Ravel began studying at the Paris Conservatory. There he studied composition under Gabriel Fauré and André Gedalge. Ravel was a rebellious composer and refused to be bound by the Conservatory’s rules of composition. Because of his compositional rebelliousness, Ravel did not receive any awards and was therefore not particularly liked by his teachers. Ravel was a private person, meticulous and precise in his work. He was considered feline in his mannerisms as was fellow Impressionist, Claude Debussy. He used conventional tonality in his works and rarely used the whole tone scale. In his orchestration, Ravel employed the full cast of instruments and placed each note with the loving care of a painter. He truly painted with musical colors and in his search for new and interesting colors he would set instruments in strange ranges and characters. Ravels piano compositions require of the performer substantial virtuosity. After a well-received piano tour Ravel composed his Piano Concerto in G Major, deeply infused with the jazz dialects and harmonies that were popular in Paris and the United States through which he had just traveled. He had wished to premiere this piece himself -continued on page 53Remember the PSO in your Wills & Planned Giving.

Tchaikovsky was born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. Throughout his life he composed symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, chamber music and a choral setting of the Russian Orthodox Divine Liturgy. He was the first Russian composer whose music made an enduring international impression. He received an honorary doctorate from Cambridge University, the 1891 Carnegie Hall Program Booklet proclaimed him, along with Brahms and Saint-Saëns, as one of the three greatest living musicians, and critics of his day call him a “modern music lord”. Composed in 1872, Symphony No. 2 in C minor was one of Tchaikovsky’s joyful compositions and was successful from its premiere. Nicknamed “The Little Russian” for its use of three Ukrainian folk songs, it gained favor from the group of nationalistic Russian composers known as “The Five” led by Mily Balakirev. Ukraine was known, at that time, as “Little Russia”. Tchaikovsky was not satisfied with this Symphony, despite its prompt success, and revised the work at length. He rewrote the opening movement substantially and shortened the finale. The final revision of this Symphony is usually performed by modern orchestras although there have been a few advocates of the original version.
