Raffaele Ponti
Artistic Director & Conductor
Winning admirers and exciting audiences, conductor Raffaele Ponti is known as an artist of dynamic personality, charismatic performances, and superb musicianship. Ponti’s trademark is in the breadth of his vision, the clarity of his interpretation, and the rich beauty of his sound. The Chicago Courier News writes, “Maestro Ponti is a rising star, someone gaining international acclaim and attention. He has a tremendous zest for music, an exuberance recalling both the roar and rush of a roller coaster ride. Fans worldwide say that his passion shows. Ponti brings an exhilarating energy level to center stage. It’s an electrifying swagger-empowering and enabling him to pull music from light to darkness and back again.” Robert Bonfiglio, Harmonica Virtuoso states, “I just performed the Villa-Lobos Harmonica Concerto with Maestro Raffaele Ponti and I was stunned by what an unbelievable conductor he is; wonderful, dazzling, exciting, I don’t know what to say other than “very musical.” Raffaele is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra (KY), Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (FL), Genesee Symphony Orchestra (NY), former Principal Conductor and Music Director, now Regular Guest Conductor of I.K.O. Italia Konzert Opera International, Founding Director of Festival di Musica da Camera in Ripatransone, Italy, and continues to appear with prominent orchestras around the United States and Europe. Michael Ludwig, Concert Violinist writes, “Raffaele brings extraordinary artistry and incredible excitement and passion to the podium, a musician of great sensitivity and high artistry. Raffaele had a wonderful rapport with the orchestra. He has tremendous skill in communicating his musical thoughts and expressions, and is extremely efficient in his rehearsing method. Most importantly, Raffaele approaches the music with a great artistic sensibility. His interpretations are passionate, exciting, and well thought out. He brings great excitement and enthusiasm that is palpable to the concert goers, as well as the orchestra.” Executive Director, Daniel Sene states, “Raffaele is an extremely skilled conductor who achieves great results with the musicians he works with. The orchestra respects his musical vision and responds with great performances. As a result of his leadership, our orchestra has seen phenomenal growth in season ticket sales. Additionally, Raffaele understands the role of a modern Artistic Director and thus relates extremely well with patrons and donors.” This season Raffaele led the Buffalo Philharmonic and Erie Philharmonic with immediate return engagements, and makes his debut as Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony (FL). Recent engagements include the Buffalo Philharmonic, Erie Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Paducah Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Genesee Symphony, Sofia Symphony, Varna State Opera, Orchestra di Pescara, Austin Symphony, Siena Sinfonia, Binghamton Philharmonic, Elgin Symphony, Teatro Lirico d’europe, Billings Symphony, Italia Konzert Opera, Utica Symphony, Schenectady Symphony, Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, and Syracuse Symphony. September 6 Concert ROBERTO SIERRA (b. 1953)
Roberto Sierra was born on October 9, 1953 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. He studied at the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico and then went to the University of Puerto Rico. Sierra later was an administrator at both schools, and served as chancellor of the Conservatory. He also had more advanced musical studies in England and Europe. In Europe he studied composition with the notable Gyorgy Ligeti in Hamburg, Germany. A fandango is a Spanish dance from around the 16th century and is characterized by a repeated four note bass line, which is one of the hallmarks of Flamenco music. Sierra composed Fandango in 2000 on commission of the National Symphony Orchestra. The piece premiered on February 28, 2001 in Washington, D.C. under the direction of Leonard Slatkin.

HOWARD HANSON (1896-1981)
More than three decades after his death, Howard Hanson remains one of America’s most important native-born composers. Hanson was born on October 28, 1891 in Wahoo, Nebraska to Swedish immigrant parents. From a very young age, Hanson studied music starting at home. He later went to school for music and received a diploma in 1911 from Luther College in Wahoo. In 1914, he went to the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, where he studied with Percy Goetschius, a composer and music theorist. Later, Hanson taught theory and composition at the College of the Pacific in San Jose, California, where, in 1919, he became the Dean of the Conservatory of Fine Arts. After his first publication, he was offered the position of Director of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. After accepting the position in 1924, Hanson remained at the school for forty years, until he retired in 1964. While in his position, however, Hanson influenced two generations of students in composition and performance with his visions. Hanson was a composer of choral music and is responsible for some of the most popular works in choral repertoire. In 1921, he was awarded the first American Rome Prize for his tone poem, “Before the Dawn”, which took him to Italy to study with Ottorino Respighi. During his stay of two years in the Italian capital, he completed his “Symphony No. 1” also referred to as “Nordic”. One year later, in 1923, his piece premiered in Rochester. Hanson’s works were inspired by his Scandinavian heritage.
Piano Concerto No. 2
SERGEI RACHMANINOFF (1873-1943)
On April 1, 1873, Sergei Rachmaninoff was born in Semyonov, Russia, to aristocratic parents. His mother gave him his first piano lesson and realized, at that point, that her son had extraordinary music talent and hired a St. Petersburg musician, Anna Ornatskaya, to be his personal instructor. When the Rachmaninoff’s lost their money, they moved near the St. Petersburg conservatory, where Sergei received a scholarship. He failed all of his exams and was moved to the Moscow conservatory, where Nikolai Zverev’s strict work ethic helped Sergei stabilize his career. Sergei began composing actively until March 1897, when his Symphony No. 1 received horrible reviews. This caused him to sink into a depression and left him unable to compose for three years. After hypnotic treatments, he recovered and composed actively again for ten years. In 1917, after the Communist Revolution, he was exiled from his own country. He moved his wife and two children to New York. There, he openly criticized the Soviet government to the New York Times, and was banned from all concert halls and conservatories throughout the USSR. Discover the Wild
KENNETH FUCHS (b. 1956)
Kenneth Fuchs is an American composer, conductor, and educator, born on July 1, 1956. He composes music for orchestras, bands, chorus’ and various chamber ensembles. Fuchs’ degrees have all been with an emphasis of composition. His received his Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Miami, where he received cum laude honors. He then went to Juilliard for his Masters in Music and Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Composition. Kenneth now serves as a composition professor at the University of Connecticut. “Discover the Wild” is a work composed in the form of a three-part overture. It was completed in October of 2007 for orchestra. In 2010, however, the piece was transcribed into another overture for winds, brass and percussion. The compositional form of the piece is an initial motive based on the interval of a perfect fourth, which then changes to a lyrical theme based on a perfect fifth. These two intervals are very strong in stability and give a piece a very unique sound.

This is because Elgar’s father owned a music shop and tuned pianos for a living. Therefore, Elgar was allowed the ability to learn how to play a wide variety of instruments, since he had them at his disposal. He was also very largely self-taught as a composer, because of his musical interest and abilities to play so many instruments. He taught the violin and played the organ for St. George’s Roman Catholic Church in Worchester. Throughout his life, Elgar’s experience grew and his style matured, as he practiced his conducting and composing for local musical organizations. Elgar’s cello concerto is composed in e minor and is composed into four movements. The piece has an approximate length of thirty minutes in its entirety. The fourth movement alone makes up about eleven minutes of its playtime. The piece was premiered on October 27, 1919 in Queen’s Hall, London by the London Symphony Orchestra. The soloist was Felix Salmond and the entire orchestra was under the conduction of the composer, Edward Elgar.

GIOACCHINO ROSSINI (1792-1868)
Gioaccchino Rossini is an Italian composer who was born on February 29, 1792 in Pesaro, Italy. In his lifetime, he wrote thirty-nine operas, as well as sacred music, chamber music, songs, and some instrumental and piano pieces. During his childhood, he spent a lot of his time in the theatre, because of his father, Giuseppe Rossini, and mother, Anna Guidarini. His father was a trumpet improviser in miscellaneous bands and orchestra, while his mother was a singer of secondary roles within the theatre. This allowed Rossini to experience music in many ways and helped form his fondness of it from an adolescent perspective. At the age of fourteen, Rossini went to the Philharmonic Academy of Bologna. This school was later renamed the G.B. Martini State Conservatory of Music. While a student, he was very lazy, because he found it easy to learn how to sing and play. By the age of fifteen, he had learned how to play the violin, horn, and harpsichord and often sung in public. His public singing even got to the point of him performing in the theatre for extra

money. However, his voice was later damaged, so he started to accompany and conduct music, to still be involved in performances, along with his composing. In 1824, Rossini composed “Guillaume Tell”, his final Opera. The Overture is a composition comprised of four movements and was first published in 1829. The piece is written on the noble themes of nationalism and liberty, and his music is worthy of the esteemed subjects. Rossini’s piece premiered, in Paris, on August 3, 1829. The Parisian public gave him an ovation. In a single work, he had responded to all the critics, in the most sophisticated way. After this work was published, Rossini, at the age of thirty-seven, decided not to write for the theatre again.
Scheherazade, Op.35
NIKOLAI RIMSKY-KORSAKOV (1844-1908)
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was born on March 18, 1844, in Tikhvin, Russia. Growing up, his family strongly influenced his lifestyle. His father, uncle, and older brother all were involved in the government in some fashion. His father was a government official of liberal vows. His uncle was an admiral in the Russian navy and his older brother was a marine officer. His mother, on the other hand, was well educated and played the piano giving him his insight of music. At the age of twelve, Rimsky-Korsakov and his family moved to St. Petersburg, where he was enrolled and entered the naval academy. While still in the naval academy, at the age of fifteen, he began taking piano lessons and learned the beginning fundamentals of composition. In 1862, Rimsky-Korsakov graduated from the naval academy. After graduating, at the mere age of eighteen, Rimsky-Korsakov left on a thirty-month cruise with the navy. Once he returned, however, he could not deny that his love for music was greater than that of being a part of the navy. Therefore, he started composing as his full time career. He became a master of orchestration and was very well known and respectable. Rimsky-Korsakov was even a member of the elitist group of composers known as The Five. He was the most accomplished and productive of the five members. The Five’s purpose was to proclaim the musical independence of Russia form to that of the West. Rimsky-Korsakov composed works in all genres, but he excelled the most in the field of opera. “Scheherazade”, though not an opera but a symphonic poem, was one of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most popular compositions. He composed it in the year 1888 and it was first published in 1889. The piece, lasting about forty-six minutes, was first performed on November 3, 1888 by the Russian Symphony, under the conduction of the composer himself, in Saint Petersburg. In 1897, The Boston Symphony Orchestra, under the conduction of Emil Paur, played “Scheherazade” in North America for its premier.
