The Brief Metro Cafe Live brief: using my mothers coffee shop to help create a new design and aesthetic around the coffee shop. New labels, logos, business cards and promotional material is needed to help the cafe become more modern. Background I will be working with my brother to create the general aesthetics that will help the coffee shop look more modern. I will also be creating promotional material on illustrator to help my mother gain more awareness to her store. Deliverables - Video Edit

- Photography CONCEPT FOR THE BRIEF The food labels are all hand-written and this is becoming more painful for my mother to keep up to date. I have decided to create labels via image and text on illustrator to make it easier for my mother to change prices for her coffee shop. The coffee shop does not have a logo since it has first opened 20 years later and we would like to make some custom made glassware, plates and cutlery to match the logo. Business cards will be used for my mother to give out her personal details to buyers/sellers.

Research Competitors? Future buyers? Researching big corporate companies such as Starbuck and Costa Coffee who use similar logos in the shape of a circle. The logo is round and the type follows throughout. Big companies such as Costa and Starbucks make new layouts and new menus throughout their seasons whereas local coffee shops like my mothers don’t have the money and can’t compete with big companies. Having an understanding of coffee shops around is important to keep up to date with trends and new drinks and offers that could help a coffee shop

Research Iconic figures By researching more into coffee shops I have a bigger understanding of our own coffee shop. Our coffee shop is located next to Barons Court Station therefore, we are near a station, we have recently been renovated using my ideas. By researching further into Metro Cafe, my mother who is the owner has decided to keep with iconic logos as well as keeping the business cards simple and easy to distribute. Here is short collection of research on my mothers coffee shop and ‘things’ that could relate to the shop that could help influence the logo.

Initial Ideas Initial sketches Initial sketches of labels using different typeface for each word ‘meatballs’ and ‘pricing’. Working closely with my mother, we have worked through labels, business cards and iconic coffee icons. Although the labels were very colourful and cheesy, we decided to go back to the first development idea and worked further from there.

Devolopment Making an iconic logo Still working with different typefaces, however, keeping them all consistant and working more towards developing the logo. The labels are about trying new layouts that could change throughout seasons in the coffee shop. The logo development started with the top ‘metro coffee logo’ with consisted of strokes on illustrator; this led to the final logo outcome which is more bold, added colouring within the cups and steam more subtle coming from the cop.

Final Outcome Labels, Business cards, Coffee mugs I have created a variation of labels that will be produced for the coffee shop after all prices have been confirmed by the owner, my mother. The business cards are simple and using a custom typeface for my mothers name ‘Magda’ who has requested not to use her surname and to place the address of the coffee shop within the business card. It is simple with a unique twist and is easy to understand and is easily legible with a sense of a coffee store. I have printed some custom made tea mugs with the new logo of the coffee shop to be placed live.

Live brief continued Creating and designing the cafe As it was a live brief that involved myself, my brother and my mother. After changing the layout of the coffee shop, we have changed the coffee shop to look more modern with an American brick layers twist. The walls have been made using bricks that have been layered over to create an old brick themed coffee shop which is modern. Wangstudio’s F Coffee shop in Vietnam is made of brick arches. Bricks background features are modern within interior design that are seen in coffee shops/stores.

Final Outcome Final design of the cafe After rebranding the coffee shop we have added a rustic brick wall with hand written type on mountboards to create a personal welcoming feel. It was great to help design for my mother and work with my brother who worked alongside me in creating the wall effect. The coffee shop looks more welcoming than before and it was great to see the before and after outcomes.

BEFORE
