METHODOLOGY & TEACHING PROGRAM

/// WHEN? Sistemas Constructivos SINGULARES es una asignatura que se ubica en los últimos años de la carrera de Arquitectura: su vocación es organizar, resumir y aplicar los conocimientos técnicos adquiridos por los estudiantes en sus primeros años de estudio.

The subject UNIQUE Construction Systems is taught in the last years of Architecture undergraduate degree, and its goal is to organise, summarise and apply all the technical knowledge that the students have acquired in their first years of study.

Por este motivo, más que aportar nuevos conocimientos, se pretende que el alumno sea autosuficiente: debe ser capaz de buscar la información que precisa, seleccionar los sistemas y componentes para su proyecto en base a criterios técnicos, estéticos, funcionales, etc., y aplicar toda esta tecnología de forma coherente con la idea de proyecto de la que parte.

For this reason, the aim of this module is to form self-sufficient students rather than providing them new knowledge: students should be able to search for information, select systems and components for their project based on technical, aesthetic and functional criteria, and to coherently apply all this technology according to the initial idea.

Como se puede observar, el papel del alumno es fundamental en este esquema, mediante una participación activa en la que aprende mediante la práctica, mientras que el profesor queda relegado a un segundo plano, desempeñando un papel de guía y supervisión, a modo de consultor externo.

As we have seen, students have an essential role in this programme through an active participation in their educational practices, while the teacher remains in the background and acts as a guide and supervisor, as an outer advisor.

Una de las premisas fundamentales del curso es aproximar al alumno a la realidad cotidiana de un arquitecto como profesional liberal; por ello, el curso orbita en torno a un proyecto que el alumno deberá afrontar, resolver y definir como si de un caso real se tratara, a nivel de Proyecto de Ejecución. Este proyecto central del curso se denomina: TdC “trabajo de construcción”.

Además de este ejercicio principal, el curso SCS contiene otra serie de actividades: E “exercises”, trabajos cortos, análisis y exposiciones P “practicing”, fases parciales del desarrollo del TdC L “lectures”, clases teóricas interactivas M “master-class”, clases magistrales impartidas por especialistas SV “site visit”, visitas a obra e industrias El planning de aprendizaje del cuatrimestre se subdivide en 4 fases consecutivas: Ph. 0, “fase 0”: análisis iniciales para adquirir conocimientos útiles: tecnología y función (E).

Ph. 1, “fase 1”: desarrollo inicial del proyecto, trabajando por separado las distintas facetas de un edificio según la clasificación por sistemas del CTE (P) Ph. 2, “fase 2”: redacción de la documentación final de un Proyecto de Ejecución, y correcciones grupales, de forma cooperativa, con el resto de alumnos y profesorado (CS) Ph. 3, “fase 3”: entrega final (TdC), y exposición del trabajo mediante un “pecha-kucha” (PK)

One of the basic premises of the subject is to bring students closer to the daily reality of an architect as a liberal professional; therefore, the module hinges on a project that each student shall face, solve and define as if it was a real assignment at an execution project level. Projects submitted must incorporate the principles of sustainable development by analysing the urban & environmental context and user’s needs.

El tema de la 4ª edición del concurso Campus Archizinc es: “Construyendo alrededor”: densificando y recalificando un edificio existente.

The theme of the programme of the 4th edition of the Archizinc Campus competition is: “Building around”: densifying and requalifying an existing building.

Muchos de los problemas asociados con este tema se pueden dividir de acuerdo a la siguiente pregunta: para reducir la expansión urbana, ¿cómo podemos aumentar la densidad de viviendas, preservando los edificios existentes, fomentando la diversidad arquitectónica, social y de programas y la sostenibilidad de los edificios?

Los candidatos buscarán un edificio existente en la ciudad y el país de su elección, consistente principalmente en unidades de vivienda colectiva, cuyo diseño permita una extensión (vertical u horizontal) y por lo tanto una adición realista de superficie habitable.

El edificio debe tener unas características estructurales suficientes que permitan a esta extensión.

Se deberán llevar a cabo consultas directas a nivel local para determinar las regulaciones de planificación urbana y las limitaciones reglamentarias aplicables al área de construcción (materiales y colores, alturas máximas, protección contra incendios, acceso, formas de volúmenes añadidos y pendiente de los techos, ...). Estas regulaciones y limitaciones deben tenerse en cuenta en el diseño del proyecto.

Candidates will look for an existing building in the city and country of their choice, consisting mainly of collective housing units, whose design allows for an extension (vertical or horizontal) and therefore a realistic addition of living surface area.

The building must have sufficient structural characteristics to allow this extension.

Direct enquiries will be conducted locally to ascertain urban planning regulations and regulatory constraints applicable to the construction area (materials and colours, maximum heights, fire protection, access, shapes of volumes added and slope of roofs...). These regulations and constraints must be taken into account when designing the project.

Select a building consisting mainly of public housing units (5 to 12 storeys) built postWWII (1950’s-1970’s) with a post and beam framework in reinforced concrete. The building can be isolated, or it can be part of a group of buildings of the same type and function.

WORK CONTENTS DEVELOPMENT & FORMAT

El proyecto se desarrollará en grupos de trabajo, obligatoriamente de 3 personas.

The project will be compulsorily developed in working groups made up of three people.

Toda la documentación que se entregue en la fase ph1 [semanas 1 a 9] será exclusivamente A LAPIZ. Se pretende con ello que el alumno piense con el lápiz, que tenga claros los materiales, medidas, dimensiones, soluciones constructivas, etc., antes de lanzarse a dibujar con el ordenador, ya que los distintos programas exigen un nivel de precisión que el alumno no posee en las fases iniciales de desarrollo de un proyecto.

All the materials, measurements, dimensions, construction solutions, etc. must be clearly outlined before starting to draw with a computer, as every computer programme requires a high level of accuracy that students have not yet acquired in the initial phases of project development.

Las entregas de la fase ph2 [semanas 10 a 14], se trabajarán a ordenador; dadas las características del trabajo, y por cuestiones de economía de tiempo, se recomienda únicamente el empleo de programas CAD, si bien queda a elección del alumno usar este u otro software.

La documentación de cada una de estas entregas de las fases ph1 y ph2 deberá estar subida a la carpeta correspondiente del Campus Virtual de la asignatura antes de las 21:00 horas de cada lunes, en archivos PDF con un peso inferior a 5 mB. El incumplimiento de este punto supondrá el abandono del grupo en la modalidad de evaluación continua.

Documents in phase ph2 [weeks 10 to 14], will be done with computer; given the characteristics of work, and due to time restrictions, the use of CAD programs are only recommended, but is the choice of the student using this or other software.

The documentation for each of these submissions (ph1 and ph2 phases) must be uploaded to the appropriate folder of the subject dropbox before 21:00 hours every Monday, in PDF files weighing less than 5 MB. If this point is not respected, the group will abandon the evaluation in the form of continuous assessment.

Ph3 final submission will consist of two parts: documentation and exposure.
