Brief 13 Capital North
1 Brief
Background
The Brief
The government recently revealed a strategy to develop the North of England as a second economic capital in Britain to redress the economic balance across the country and to compete on the world stage. On a global scale Northern cities are quite small and have individual strenghts, but together they have the capacity to act as a global city. These cities are built on the idea of being stronger together, not a rival to London, but to join it in the fight for Britain’s share of the global economy.
The brief is to brand the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ and create awareness of its many and varied attributes to the rest of the world. The idea requires a brand for the name ‘Capital North’ so the world understands this as a significant single entity. This is an identity project, very much about the craft and visual problem solving of design.

Not only should the big idea be compelling but the way it’s brought to life, the attention to detail, the way it looks should be beautiful and carefully considered. When considering final solutions, avoid cliches and stereotypes. Rolling countryside, regional dialects and visual shorthands are not appropriate here.

Poster Slogans
Less Commuting, More Living
A series of posters were created to promote the campaign and show that having less of something can be a positive attribute up North. These were animated so they could be displayed on interactive billboards throughout the big cities to make the campaign more engaging and to make the most of technology that is available.
We each created a slogan for the posters to demonstrate key areas and appeal to different people
This was the poster that I designed and it shows how in the North there is not a big commute time compared to other places, say London, and therefore gives people more time to do the things that they enjoy outside of work.
Less Commuting, More Living Less There, More Here Less Former, More Future, Less Squeeze, More Space Less Expenses, More Income

Sarah Goldthorpe created the mock ups for each poster, and I animated the Less Commuting, More Living and Less There, More Here posters.

Animation Since the posters created were transformed into animations, we decided to create the presentation as a video so that they could all be played seamlessly in the presentation. I created the animation since I had already animated two of the posters and had the skills to create it quickly and smoothly.
