WINDY PAVILION

REACTS TO THE SENSE OF WIND WITH ROTATING MOVEMENT

About the Pavilion

VAWT Up-base / Thermoplastic Composites (tmcs)

It is a pavilion that provides Fontys academy with space for performances, restraint workshops, and individual study to alternate. The vercal turbine works as the second skin of the pavilion and the users. When the wind comes, the turbine will be pushed to rotate and create a more apparent boundary. It also influences the sense of wind for the user inside. The corridor is a transion space for inside and outside and works as the seats. The windy pavilion sits under the largest tree in the courtyard. According to the courtyard analysis map, the wind from the two main entrances intersect here, which provides opportunies for the pavilion to launch and react. Here also provides enough space for the pavilion for self-standing.

Structure and Material

The pavilion is divided into two parts, fixed-stage and rotatable turbines. According to the calculaon, it is an 8° stacally indeterminate structure. The structural analysis diagram is shown above. Eight steel columns support the fixed stage and the whole pavilion. Wood is the primary material for the ceiling, stage, and corridor. The sky windows are covered with ripstop-polyester sails, which intend to increase colourful nature light and extend the paern that lights through leaves. Thermoplasc composites help to reduce weight and maintain enough support; as a result, the structure of turbines is made by it. The sails between the up and down base of the turbines are made from ripstop-polyester. They provide opportunies to create a more transparent space and colourful mask.
