Steuben County Department of Public Works The Steuben County Legislature has authorized a Tire Amnesty Day at the Bath Landfill Saturday, May 7, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

This offers County residents a way to keep roadsides clean. Also, the threat of West Nile Virus is minimized from mosquitoes collecting in standing water inside the tires.

Residents of Steuben County will be able to dispose of eight (8) car and pickup truck tires at no charge.

WHAT ARE WE TEACHING OUR CHILDREN? My dad, Jim Cannon, was raised during the Great Depression. His dad was a plumber, and they lived a very modest lifestyle. Like everyone, my dad was a product of his upbringing, and he was greatly influenced by the tough economic times in which he grew up. You didn’t waste, period, which meant turning off the lights when you left the room, wearing clothes twice (and more of them in the winter if you got cold, instead of turning up the heat), and not buying something unless you had the cash to do so. While some of the stories he told about his childhood may have been exaggerated (like using pages from the Sears, Roebuck catalogue as toilet paper), the bottom line was true - you worked very hard for your money, and lived within your means.

Not so today. Aside from the crushing financial problems we are creating for our children’s generation by reckless spending at all levels of government, an equally startling trend is what we are teaching future generations… Just buy/spend now, and worry about paying for it later, if ever… Live the high life today, and don’t trouble yourself with reckoning tomorrow… I am entitled to riches and the good life, whether or not I have earned it.

If my dad were around now, I know he would be shaking his head and cursing under his breath (well, maybe not under his breath).

What should we be teaching our children? How about the following: • Want something? Work to earn money. Want more? Work harder.

• Working for minimum wage is not beneath your dignity. Until you prove otherwise, that is what you are worth. An entry level job, like “flipping burgers,” is what your grandparents called “opportunity.”

• Want to buy something? Wait until you have all of the cash to pay for it. After all your bills are paid.

• Financial success in life is all about being on the correct side of the interest equation. Save your money and earn interest, rather than borrowing money and paying it.

• The world owes you nothing (and neither do your parents), and the sooner you realize it, the better off you will be.

And remember, in tough times the Sears catalogue is only an arm’s length away.

Motorists often cite the difficulty in finding a reliable mechanic they feel they can trust.

A courteous staff that’s willing to answer your questions is a good starting point, as is a shop that’s displaying the ASE sign or logo, which indicates the shop employs certified technicians. Also, check the shop walls for any past commendations, including civic, community or customer service awards.

It’s also a good idea to check what vehicles the mechanics are currently working on. If the vehicles in the parking lot are equal in value to your own, that’s a good sign. * Do the small things to save fuel. The cost of fuel is among the highest costs associated with owning a vehicle. But small things like ensuring tires are properly inflated, replacing misfiring spark plugs and even clearing the trunk of clutter can all increase fuel efficiency and help your bottom line in the process. * Give your engine a break. Cars aren’t all that different from the human body in that everything is directly or indirectly connected as a system. Just like a body can overcompensate in one area when another area is injured, a car’s engine will be forced to overcompensate when there are deficiencies in other areas. For example, a clogged air filter or fouled spark plug makes combustion less efficient, which reduces power -- and wastes fuel as well. Motorists can give their engine a break by replacing clogged filters, sticking to their vehicle maintenance schedule and routinely checking fluid levels.
