George and Dorothy Bancroft of Ossian recently celebrated their 65th Anniversary.

They were married in St. Columba’s Church in Caledonia, NY on August 16, 1946. They have five children, Kathy (John) Nagle, Nancy (John) Reinholtz, Charles (Theresa) Bancroft all of Dansville, Phyllis (Jim) DiSalvo of Mt.Morris, and Brian (Ruth) Bancroft of Canaseraga. They have 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and another expected in December. They moved to Ossian in 1955 and farmed there ever since.

That’s Just Wrong I am a big believer in folks taking personal responsibility for their actions, and I am not at all keen on the idea of blaming others when something bad happens. Sometimes, however, we can and should be held accountable for the actions of others, even when we did nothing wrong ourselves. A recent case from Staten Island proves my point, although I think the Court got it wrong in the end.

A middle aged man was home alone one day when three teenagers in foster care from a “group home” next door broke in and beat and stabbed the man to death. The three teenagers were charged and found guilty of murder in criminal court. The man’s family then hired an injury lawyer and sued the City of Staten Island (which was responsible for the foster care program) for the man’s “wrongful death,” claiming that the City was negligent in causing the man’s death because it did not protect him from the three teenagers and their “violent propensities.” What were the teenagers’ “violent propensities” that the City knew about? Only that two of the three teenagers had prior convictions for murder, and all of them had lengthy criminal histories including crimes of violence. The man’s family argued (rightly, in my opinion) that the City owed a duty to the man and others in the neighborhood to keep them safe from violent, vicious children in the City’s foster care program.

The case went to trial and the trial court ruled in favor of the man’s family, awarding the family over $2,000,000. However, the case was appealed and the appellate court ruled that the City was entitled to “immunity” when exercising “discretion” as a governmental entity, and therefore not responsible.

Apparently, the “discretion” exercised by City officials, was choosing not to take any measures whatsoever to protect neighbors from violent thugs living in the group home. What a crock!

Again, I am not big into blaming others when bad things happen, but this case is a travesty. How else can the City of Staten Island become motivated to protect its citizens if it is not punished when it fails to do so on its own? That’s just wrong.

f you're the busy parent of young children, you might find yourself visiting a preschool or park more often than the gym. So make it work for you, and join parents who are taking part in a new trend in toddler-toting fitness: the playground workout. With a playground workout, you can engage in play and tone muscles at the same time. It can involve just a few dips or a 40minute circuit using various types of playground equipment. The options for variety are many, depending on the kind of equipment at your local playground. Kids can benefit from your playground workout, too. It provides an opportunity for parents and children to play together and sets an example of healthy activity for kids.

Remember to use your manners. Be aware that, while a good workout is important, the playground should provide a safe and fun place for kids to play.

Don't hog the equipment.

Also, be aware that even if you think doing pushups on the playground is silly, you can help reduce potential embarrassment for exercise-deprived moms and dads by giving a nod of approval or offering supportive words.

The playground workout Warm up A brisk 5-10 minute walk around the perimeter of the playground, or take a stroll with the kids.

V-ups on bench Place your bottom on the edge of a bench, and pull your knees into your chest.

Then, return your feet straight out into the air so they do not touch the ground.

Bench dips Find a bench, and perform tricep dips with legs straight out on ground.

Monkey bar pull-ups Keep your body straight.

Place your hands on the bar, and pull your chest into the bar so your body is raised up.

Bear crawls Crawl on your feet and hands, bringing one leg and the opposite hand up at the same time.

Frog jumps Get in the "frog" position, with arms straight, hands on the ground. Knees are bent, with knees above the ankles. Propel upward like a frog and repeat.

Bench step-ups Use a bench as a platform for high-stepping. Anchor one leg on bench and step up, repeating the same leg for 30 seconds. Then switch to other leg for 30 seconds.
