During the summer months overexposure to heat can quickly lead to dehydration. To avoid dehydrating this summer, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, and not just water. Sometimes open windows can actually make a home more uncomfortable. During extreme heat, draw the blinds and shut the windows. Heavy sweating removes salt and minerals from the body, and these need to be replaced once you have finished your workout. Non-alcoholic beverages can help replace lost salt and minerals, but those on a low-salt diet should consult a physician before drinking a sports beverage after working out. * Restrict time outdoors to cooler hours. While it's great to get outside in the summer sun, it's ideal to do so during certain times of the day when the heat won't feel so overwhelming. Limit outdoor activities to morning and evening hours, when the temperatures are more mild and the sun won't be as hot. When resting, rest in the shade to give your body a chance to recover. * Find an air conditioned place to spend your time. If your home or apartment does not have air conditioning, find a place that does where you can spend your time. When is $400,000 not $400,000??? When people become ill with a dangerous disease or a severe health problem, they don’t want to go and see their family doctor, they want a specialist, and it makes sense. You want the best treatment you can get, and seeing a doctor who specializes in that field (orthopedics, cancer, neurology, etc.) will give you the best treatment. However, when it comes to lawyers, people often don’t have that same mindset, instead thinking “any lawyer will do.� Not true, especially when talking about personal injury cases. A client’s recent case (we will call her “Mary�) has made this point perfectly clear. Mary was badly injured in a car accident and she had no health insurance. The first $50,000 of her medical bills were covered by the “no-fault� provisions of her auto insurance, but she had an additional $95,000 of medical bills that were paid by Medicaid. In this situation, Medicaid has a lien on any recovery that Mary gets for medical bills paid. We just settled Mary’s case against the responsible party for $400,000, subject to resolution of Medicaid’s lien for $95,000. I was chatting between cases recently with a few other lawyers at the Hall of Justice in Rochester and I was commenting on how long it takes to deal with Medicaid red tape and one of the lawyers from a big box injury firm, said “Why do you care about Medicaid?� I explained to him that Medicaid has a lien on Mary’s settlement monies so that they can be repaid for Mary’s medical treatment related to the car accident. I then told this big box lawyer that if the lawyer for the injured person releases the settlement money to the client without clearing the Medicaid lien, the lawyer is personally obligated to pay Medicaid the amount of the lien. The big box lawyer’s face went white and he instantly had a sick look on his face. I knew by looking at him what was wrong but asked just to be certain. Sure enough, he had recently finalized a client’s injury case without resolving a substantial Medicaid lien, and was personally on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars to Medicaid. Worse yet, Medicaid can come directly after the client for the money, and can potentially take from the client not only the settlement money, but other assets as well! Fortunately for my client Mary, I was able to get Medicaid to accept about $30,000 to settle their $95,000 lien. The client of the big box lawyer probably wasn’t so lucky. If you have a potential injury case, treat it like a serious health problem and hire a lawyer who specializes in injury law (and has the time to devote to your case). You will be thankful you did.

Reneé returns this summer with a new series of art workshops August 22nd to 26th for children ages 5 to 13 as part of the Summer Arts at the Library se ries. COUNTY KIDS CAN HIP HOP TO AN OLD FASHIONED SUMMER - FUN, FREE & PRIZES

The Community Wellness Collaboration consiting of Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Department of Health, Livingston County Youth Bureau and Noyes Memorial Hospital are once again offering the county’s children the opportunity to follow, HIP HOP all through July as he becomes a “freerange” kangaroo, spending time outdoors in unstructured play activities, eating new fruits and vegetables, and taking classes in cooking at the Extension! Packets are available in all of our county libraries and online at www.ccelivingstoncounty.org and www.gvhp.org. There is a calendar of activities that children are invited to participate in. By completing the calendar using a check off, and mailing their forms in to CCE, they will be eligible to win prizes. There is also a scavenger hunt for their town or others with a form that can also be completed and sent in to be entered into a prize drawing. Be looking for a flat HIP HOP in August!

Car enthusiasts will tell you that one of the best ways to maintain that new car look is to keep up with a frequent washing schedule. Removing road grime and other plagues of automotive paint on a routine basis keeps a car looking its best. The warmth can cause the water and soap to dry faster, leaving unsightly deposits. DO wash off dead insects, road salt, mud, etc., as soon as possible. Otherwise these substances may stick to the paint and cause erosion. DON’T assume the rain will clean the

car. In areas with acid rain, it’s actually essential to rinse a vehicle off after it rains to prevent damage. DO move the sponge lengthwise along the vehicle. Swirling the sponge may cause tiny scratches.
