Wrestlers help teammate battle leukemia
Braxton Middleton grapples with disease Braxton Middleton is a junior student at Keshequa. Braxton started the season as a Keshequa wrestler and then was diagnosed with leukemia. Braxton spent a month at Strong Memorial Hospital and now receives treatment at Strong. On Monday, Dec. 20, a dinner was held to help the Middleton family with expenses to fight this disease. Many people and groups helped to raise money, including Wrestlers, Girls Bas-
ketball teams, Chris Hough-Wood, Dalton Arrowmart, Home Sweets Bakery in Hunt, The Nunda Explorers, Nunda Shurfine, Bob and Mechelle Gillen, the Keshequa Teachers and Kim Flint. Before the wrestling match on Thursday, Jan. 13, Coach Mike Uveino and the entire wrestling team presented the Middleton family with a wonderful gift of money. We wish Braxton the very best for a full and speedy recovery.

RISE AND SHINE AWARDS Continuing our efforts to celebrate success, each Monday morning we give out our Rise and Shine Awards. Teachers nominate students based on their performance during the week. Students are then sorted into two categories: Rising Stars are students who are turning things around and who are now on the track towards success. Shining Stars are students who are doing a superb job and who can be used as an example for others. Winners receive a certificate with Mr. Bielicki mentioning their names on the morning announcements and then they get their picture taken by Tammy Clark, secretary to the superintendent. All six winners were selected by the sixth grade team.

AH, VALENTINE’S DAY! Valentine’s Day. A day of love, roses, candy, romantic meals, and for many, wedding engagements. But what happens when those wedding plans go south, and one party to the engagement wants out? New York has a law commonly referred to as the “heart balm” law, which says that you cannot sue someone for money if they back out of an engagement, even if you have been hurt financially by the breakup. The most common scenario in which this plays out, is when one party to the engagement calls it off, and the other side gets stuck with the bills for the wedding dress, flowers, reception hall, etc. Common sense would leave you to believe that the party who bailed out on the engagement would be responsible for one-half of the wedding related bills, but not so. The person who signed the contract for those bills is the only one responsible, and they cannot get money from the other side even when they get stuck for the whole mess. Personally, I think that stinks, and both parties should be responsible for half. The family of Burton S. Becker wishes to acknowledge our deepest appreciation to those who provided help and comfort during Dad’s recent passing. Livingston County Hospice and Vincent House staffs, and the Wayland Ambulance for their help in providing excellent comfort care during his brief hospital stay and transportation needs. Funerals and wakes help people heal emotionally recently attended a funeral, and it reminded me of the purpose of funerals and wakes, and how people express their emotions at this difficult time. The emotional state of the mourner depends upon the manner in which the person grieves. The way people grieve varies. Some people can freely express their emotions and openly show how sad and unhappy they are. Others have difficulty expressing their grief. They may be more animated and even talkative. This is the way they react to their loss. It is not unusual that the mourner may harbor the unlikely emotion of anger. The anger may be directed at the deceased for leaving them. Or they are just angry that their loved one was taken away from them. Funerals and wakes are not always sad and solemn occasions. During the wake or visitation, bursts of laughter may be heard periodically when friends recall happier times. The age of the deceased may also have an effect on the demeanor of the mourners. The younger the deceased, the more mournful the atmosphere. There is no question that the expression “no parent should have to bury his or her child” is painfully true. At what age should a child attend a

However, it is very important that there is communication between the parent and child discussing the fact that a loved one had died. Ethnicity also plays a role in funerals. Some ethnic groups celebrate the person’s life with the wake and funeral lasting the
entire day. For others, it is shorter and less celebratory. A funeral should be a therapeutic occasion. It is a way for friends and families to emotionally deal with their loss. It is an occasion not only to grieve with family and friends, but to honor and reflect on the person’s life. Massachusetts-based Dr. Murray Feingold is the physician in chief of The Feingold Center for Children and president of the Genesis Fund, a nonprofit organization that funds the care of children born with birth defects, mental retardation and genetic diseases.
