How it works Lung volume reduction surgery can be a last treatment for people suffering from severe emphysema. Only a few locations in the U.S. offer the procedure. In the surgery, part of the damaged lung is removed, which allows the remaining tissue and surrounding muscles to work more efficiently. This makes breathing easier. Stephen Hazelrigg, professor and chairman of cardiothoracic surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The surgery is for patients who have significant emphysema and whose breathing capacity is less than 30 percent. In these cases, their lungs are hyperinflated and push down on the diaphragm, making it hard to breathe, Hazelrigg said. The surgery is done through thoracoscopy. A stapler is inserted through an incision, and it is used to seal off and remove diseased air sacs in the lungs. Hutcherson had a third of each of her lungs removed. "In the surgery, the bad areas are removed and the diaphragm comes back up and improves the functioning of the lungs," Hazelrigg said.

Candidate screenings Candidates for the surgery go through a number of tests beforehand, said Theresa Boley, an assistant professor at SIU School of Medicine, a Memorial Medical Center nurse practitioner and coordinator of the lung volume reduction surgery program. "They do breathing tests and a variety of exercises including walking 30 minutes on a treadmill," she said. This also helps them be healthier for the surgery, Boley said.

History of the surgery The first lung reduction surgeries were done in the 1950s. A handful of patients did well, but there were also a few deaths. The program went dormant until the 1990s, when laser surgeries and improved technologies made lung reduction

Discrepancies in children’s liquid medication labels ecently, there was a very disturbing report that you may have read concerning the unreliability of the measuring devices used in over-thecounter liquid medications for children. Also, the directions on the labels of the pediatric medications were not always clear or consistent. There were 200 over-the-counter liquid pediatric products evaluated that were used to treat pain, cold symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms and allergies. Results of the study showed that 98.6 percent of the time there were inconsistencies between the dosing directions and the markings on the dosing device. For example, the dosing directions used tablespoons as a unit of measurement, but on the dosing device, only ounces were used. About a quarter of the medications did not include any type of measuring device. Plus, when the measuring device was included, 24 percent lacked the necessary markings on the device. Prior studies have shown that even when measuring devices are accurate, the dose given by caregivers is frequently inaccurate. In addition, the child's unwillingness to swallow the medication results in much of the liquid never being ingested. Because improper dosages may have significant consequences, the Food and Drug Administration has made recommendations concerning over-the-counter

Not mentioned in most of the discussions on the subject of medications for young children is, "What should you do when the child refuses to take the medication?" In these situations, babies or even 2year-olds can keep their mouths closed so tightly that you just can't get the liquid in. Accomplishing this may take some ingenuity on your part. Mixing the medication with something the child likes sometimes works. There are now many medications that have a variety of flavors, making them more palatable.

The directions that are provided should contain the same abbreviations and units of measurements that are present on the measuring device. THE GREAT EQUALIZER Sometime in the future, historians will look back upon the present, and compare the technological advancements made over the last twenty years to the great cultural Renaissance that began in the 14th century. I know for many people, myself included, the mere mention of the word “Renaissance” causes eyelids to droop and daydreams to form. ( Just like in 7th grade.) However, the breadth and depth of the effect recent technological advances have made on our lives cannot be overstated. This is particularly true as it concerns the practice of law, and in a big way. Nearly twenty years ago, when I was working in a large law firm in Albany, it was not uncommon for one of the senior attorneys to assign three or four people to research a single issue. We would trudge off to the library and spend countless hours flipping through dusty old law books, looking for just the right case to support our position. The work hours expended were tremendous, and, accordingly, so was the cost to the client. As a consequence, it gave the well-heeled client a significant advantage over his adversary of more modest means. It also gave the large law firm a substantial practical advantage over the smaller firm, where the smaller firm would not have the available labor hours to expend. Not so today. What formerly was accomplished in twenty hours of research the old-fashioned way, I can now accomplish in minutes without ever getting up from my desk. This is no exaggeration. With the advent of very powerful Internet legal search engines that accept “natural language” search requests (for example, “Does suing for “anxiety” suffered by a plaintiff in a personal injury case allow the defense to investigate the plaintiff’s pre-accident mental health history?”), the advantage that large law firms had over smaller offices has completely vanished. The playing field has been leveled. And I couldn’t be happier about it. And by the way, the answer to the question above, is “yes.” If the lawyer for the plaintiff (with a pre-accident mental health history) makes the mistake of suing for anxiety or other emotional injuries suffered by the client, the defense can absolutely get all of the records of the client’s prior mental health treatment. This underscores the importance of being truthful with your lawyer and the importance of hiring the right lawyer.
