Warm-colored flowers will add impact and could create a cozier feel. Hanging baskets and raised containers can add height and free up more floor space for gardens. GET THAT DNA TEST, NO EXCEPTIONS Imagine this: a man, Tom, has been dating a woman, Mary, for several weeks. One day Mary announces to Tom that she is pregnant and that “they” are going to have a baby. Tom is shocked and wonders how he will handle it all given that he is only twentythree and Mary twenty-two. Tom mulls things over and decides to move in with Mary and help her through her pregnancy and raise their coming child. Mary gives birth to a boy and all is well. Fast forward five years. Tom and Mary are still living together and have been raising “their” child Paul, as a family, since Paul’s birth. But all is not well. Unknown to Tom, Mary has been having a relationship with “Peter” for years and she comes home one day and tells Tom that she is moving out and taking Paul with her and moving in with Peter. Then she drops the biggest bombshell of all: Tom is not Paul’s father, Peter is, as she had been having a relationship with Peter since before Paul’s birth. What is poor Tom to do? Tom consults an attorney who advises him to file paternity papers in Family Court a.s.a.p. so that he can get a DNA test and find out if he really is Paul’s father. But there is a catch: under New York law, New York Court of Appeals decision (the highest court in New York), Mary can potentially stop Tom from having the DNA test and can stop him from disputing Paul’s paternity. That’s right - in New York, a woman can lie to a man and tell him a child is his and convince the man that he is the father, and if the father believes it and acts like a father to the child, he can be stopped in the future from proving that the child is not his. The Court of Appeals has recently ruled that turnabout is indeed fair play, because in a case with facts very similar to Tom’s plight, the Court has ruled that the mother can also be prohibited from challenging paternity in certain situations. This means that in Tom’s case, Mary might be stopped from taking Tom to Court to prove that Peter, not Tom, is the father. Personally, I am not crazy about these decisions, but I guess I haven’t made my mind up yet on whether it is good law or bad.

he axolotl (ax-oh-lot-ul) is a curious-looking salamander from Mexico that looks like it never wants to grow up. But scientists, including a professor and his students at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill., are using the salamanders to learn how people grow and develop. These salamanders may one day help us understand how humans could regrow limbs lost during accidents or war. “Axolotls are common research animals that have been used for over 180 years to study basic things like how we get an arm and how we get a heart and how we get a brain,” says Ed Zalisko, professor of biology at Blackburn. “Since then, we’ve stud-

‘This is about stem cells’ The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is native to the Mexico City area. They are rarely found in the wild but are common in captivity, especially in academic research. The axolotl’s name translates roughly to “water dog.” They spend their lives in their larval form; they look like tadpoles that stopped developing just short of adulthood. They are closely related to the more familiar tiger salamander. Research is going on across the country as scientists try to determine what triggers the axolotl’s cells to regrow a lost limb. “What we are learning is that this is about stem cells,” said Zalisko. “We need to tell these cells to be more generalist.” That’s because most cells have a very specific purpose. Zalisko says scientists want to switch those cells on to do other things, or retrain them, in a way. “These cells have to stop studying their major and go back to general education,” he said with a laugh.

implications for those studying growth and development in animals and people. “It’s original research,” Zalisko said. “We’re asking questions to which we don’t know the answers.”

Studies link media use, child obesity A mounting body of research shows that kids’ media use may be linked to their weight, partly because the sedentary act of watching television or playing on computers and mobile devices can displace other activities. In response to Carolyn Tinney’s statement of 30 June 2011, “The lack of even minimal zoning in the Town of Springwater has allowed for the development of the Depot Rd Trailer Park…” I have owned the mobile home park for over 30 years. I do not think you can label me an “Absentee Landlord” because I also live in the park and I am certainly not ashamed of that fact. The park provides low-income housing for 35 families. There are not many Lexus, BMWs, or Volvos parked in our driveways, but we are kind of normal, I think! We water our lawns, plant flowers, attend weddings, funerals or go fishing. Some of our residents belong to the Springwater Fire Department; some of us drink beer, laugh when we are happy, cry when we are sad, and put our pants on one leg at a time, just like you. The one thing we are definitely thankful for is the lack of “minimal zoning” because according to you, we would not have a home here otherwise. Shame on you Mrs. Tinney! If we had known how you felt about us at the last election, perhaps we would have zoned you out. Did you know that if the mobile home park was not here there probably would not be a sewer system in town? The low income level of most of the park residents was instrumental to the town receiving the sewer grant. Why do you insist on painting us as a negative asset? If I were you, I would not worry so much about someone buying the Wormuth Building and putting in an “adult bookstore.” I would be more concerned about what the costs will be for the town people when the DEC demands that the property is cleaned up from the chemical spills it has experienced through the years it served as a gas station, and when the oil company was next door. Now that we are lucky enough to own this property, we (the tax payers) will have to assume the costs. Good move on the part of Supervisor Buckley, and Council Members Bush and Curtiss, who voted for this white elephant sale. The adult entertainment developers are more inclined to buy a site up in the clouds near you and your like-minded friends who have money. The people down here are more concerned with putting food on the table for their families and paying the escalating costs of living here. And why are you criticizing Florence Perkins? She served on the Town Board with dignity for more than 24 years because people liked her. They voted for her because they recognized she did a good job, volunteered to assist at many functions around town, and they trusted her. She was not defeated in an election, She simply got tired of the attitudes and atmosphere of bullying that made it nearly impossible to get a word in edgewise with any of you. Shame on all of you for the way you have treated Patricia Willsea. False malicious allegations meant to undermine the integrity of her work are simply disrespectful and mean. She is a nice lady who has served this community for many years in many capacities. She is very accommodating and helps many community organizations by volunteering her hours and rolling up her shirt cuffs when needed. As an elected official, she has served the needs of this community and done a great job! I do not share your fear of “doom and gloom” for the future of Springwater. What I do see is a small segment of people who have moved here and saw that the residents were “too happy.” We had low taxes, a simple government structure, opportunities for a person to buy some land, put in a well and septic system, and maybe a mobile home, or build as house as money permitted. This system worked for all of us –farmers were able to sell off a little land during the lean years, and families were able to have good solid homes in which to raise families or retire to. Yes, you saw that life was too good here and you got together with your cronies and came up with ways to make life here a little less nice. Land restrictions, higher taxes, planning boards to decide what colors to paint our houses and permits for this and that. Zoning now and perhaps a minimum income level for residents of say $100,000 per year is next on your agenda. Can zoning keep out arrogant people, hoity-toities, and people who look down their noses at people who have less than them? If so, I might buy into your “minimal zoning.” In my heart, I believe that there are a lot of people in Springwater who love it and appreciate it for what it is. It is time for these people to speak up—if you want to keep Springwater a nice place to live, there is an election for three town board members this year. Vote for someone who shares your views on how your town is run. Oh and Carolyn, I pay over $22,000 each year for real estate taxes in Springwater. You pay approximately $2,100 in taxes.
