Canisteo’s watered down history By Kathryn Ross
C
anisteo is the second oldest settlement in Steuben County, owing that to the fact that it is located on the Canisteo River. Research by members of the Kanestio Historical Society reports that the valley may have been visited by a white man as early as 1615 and makes reference to an “outlaw village” (a refuge of lawless men of all races) known as Kanestio, which was claimed by French authorities in 1690. In 1762 the ruffian town of about 60 houses was destroyed under the direction of Capt. Andrew Montour. The founding of the village and the name Kanestio, which means “board in the water” is attributed to the Indians. Town Historian George Dickey and John Babbitt of the historical society said Kanestio is where the river, which heads east, first gets deep enough to launch a canoe. The Iroquois Confederation which “owned” the land allowed the Deleware and Fox tribes to live there and guard the eastern entrance to the Forbidden Trail an Indian trail which gave quick access to the west. The river also led the first white settlers Uriah Stephens, Jr., Solomon Bennett, Johnathan Jamison and Richard Crosby to the Kanestio Valley in 1789 and establish a permanent settlement. Lumbering and subsistence farming soon became the main activities. Lumber was sent down the river on arks. With the coming of the railroad in the 1850s the village a major shipping point. “Hay and oats were sent to the city (New York) to feed the thousands of dray animals. Warehouses were built beside the tracks to house the hay and oats through the winter, and soon industry grew,” said Dickey. One of the early factories was the Alli-
son Shoe Company. Along with the more than 200 Canisteo men who joined up at the onset of the Civil War, much of the Union Army marched into battle wearing Allison shoes. Prior to that, the Canisteo River had been a pathway on the Underground Railroad and the McGee house in Belle Haven just north of Canisteo was a sanctuary for runaway slaves. The McGee house, constructed by Col. James McBarney in 1797, is the oldest house in the county. After the war, a series of disasterous fires, devastating floods, the establishment of the Erie Lackawanna in Hornell and an economic depression in the 1880’s saw the end of Canisteo’s boom. “By the 1930s Canisteo was a bedroom community,” Dickey said. But that didn’t stop the village from becoming the site of the largest advertising company in the country from 1920s through the 1930s. Up To Date Advertising was one of the village’s largest employers making signs, posters and yardsticks and rulers. And from the 1890s to the 1970s just one of the many hatcheries which hatched, shipped 110,000 chicks around the country. When aviation began to flourish, navigation was a sort of seat of your pants compass driven thing, explained Babbitt, which led Harry Smith and Ed Childs to create the world-famous Canisteo Living Sign. In 1933 they planted 260 Scotch Pine trees to form the letters CANISTEO to let aviators know where they were. “Other towns did similar things, painting their names on the tops of buildings and such,” Babbitt said. Dickey and Babbitt agree that while Canisteo would like to claim Bill Pullman as a favorite son because the actor owns and frequently visits a farm located in Hartsville they acquiesce to Hornell. Instead they proudly point to William Stewart, 1883-1957, an author who wrote about Canisteo, post master and member of the New York State Assembly. They also acknowledge that Paul Garner, a former curator of the Smithsonian Museum, was a Canisteo boy. But Canisteo has one claim to fame few other communities have. According to Naval history, in the closing days of World War II, the USS Canisteo (AO-99) was a Cimarron class fleet oiler constructed for the Navy. It was the only U.S. Navy ship to bear the name Canisteo after the Canisteo River. However the ship was commissioned too late for service in the war and instead saw duty during the Cold War. During that time the ship carried diesel fuel to the U.S. troops occupying Germany. The USS Canisteo was launched on July 6, 1945 at Sparrows Point, MD. Between 1947 and 1948, the USS Canisteo served four tours of duty supporting
the U.S. 6th Fleet. Between 1966 and 1968 the USS Canisteo underwent “jumboization” when a 400-foot midsection was inserted and welded between her original bow and stern increasing the ship’s liquid cargo capacity by over onethird. In 1979 the USS Canisteo returned from a tour of duty in the Mediterranean to Norfolk. VA, it’s home port, and due to the lack of crew was unable to return to sea on schedule. In Oct. 1989 the USS Canisteo was removed from the Naval Vessel Register and in 1992 she was transferred to the Maritime Administration in the National Defense Reserve Fleet docked in Virginia. In 2003 the 58-year old ship was sold for scrap and towed to England arriving there in Nov. 2003. Environmentalist protests over the toxic substances contained in the vessel delayed the scrapping of the ship until 2010. Today the history of Canisteo is preserved at the Kanestio Historical Museum on Main Street. Completed in 1995 the building is constructed from the remains historical buildings.
