Job loss can affect health of men and women he recent economic downturn has resulted in many people losing their jobs. It has been estimated that 75 percent of the jobs that have been lost were held by men. An editorial in a recent psychiatric journal discussed the effect on a man when he loses his job and is no longer the family breadwinner. According to the editorial, this job loss has resulted in an increase in the number of men being diagnosed with depression. Depression was once considered a disorder affecting mainly women, but this is changing. It is predicted that the number of men diagnosed with depression will continue to increase. Women were becoming more involved in the job market even before the present downturn. In 1970, 4 percent of wives were the primary income producers in the family. In 2007, it increased to 22 percent, and the percentage continues to rise. Today, 50 percent of jobs are held by women. As they assume more powerful and important jobs, they are developing similar medical maladies that have traditionally afflicted their male counterparts.

Women who have stressful jobs were twice as likely to have a heart attack than women whose jobs were not stressful. working situations, in certain ways, they are becoming more like a man, especially as it relates to the stress associated with their jobs. It has taken too long for these job opportunities to become available to women. But now that they are more available, women should be aware that these opportunities come with a potential price: concerns about their health. This issue needs to be addressed — the health of both men and women depend upon it. Massachusetts-based Dr. Murray Feingold is the physician in chief of The Feingold Center for Children.

The AOD Program Coordinator is responsible for developing comprehensive evidence-based substance abuse prevention efforts for Geneseo students. This is a 10-month, full-time position under the supervision of the Administrative Director of Student Health and Counseling. The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or health education, have three to five years of related experience in AOD prevention/education programming with college-aged students, and have experience with individual counseling, program coordination, and evidence-based treatment models.
