In fact, a survey of ASE-certified master automotive technicians indicated that motorists could expect a well-maintained vehicle to last up to twice as long as one that’s neglected. “Putting off maintenance and service or, worse -- neglecting ongoing problems, is penny-wise and dollar foolish,” says ASE’s Editorial Director, Martin Lawson. “Today’s vehicles are designed for years and years of reliable service.” Among the items motorists frequently neglect are oil changes, tire and brake service, wheel alignment, and air and fuel filters. Some even ignore engine lights and warnings, which, if left unattended can cause a relatively minor problem, such as a problem with the air and fuel mixture, doing damage to more expensive components. To help consumers choose a repair shop that fits their needs, ASE offers the following checklist advice: * Look for a neat, well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in

Sometimes in life you read a newspaper article or hear a story reported on television and your immediate reaction is “There is absolutely no way that can be true.” Or, “Are you out of your mind expecting me to believe that?” For example, let’s say that you are reading the Wall Street Journal and you read about a fisherman in Switzerland who was brought to court on animal cruelty charges by the “official” animal lawyer for the town (canton) of Zurich. The offense committed by the fisherman? Taking ten minutes to land a 22 pound pike. No, this is not an “April Fools” joke and I am not making this up. Apparently “animal rights” is a very serious subject in Switzerland, and a lawyer by the name of Antoine Goetschel (who really is the appointed animal rights lawyer, kind of like a public defender for animals) thought that taking ten minutes to land a fish amounted to cruelty because the fish was caused to “suffer unnecessarily” and the fish’s “dignity” was damaged. How did the case come to the attention of attorney Goetschel? Animal rights activists loudly (and effectively) protested after a picture of the four foot fish and angler was published in a local newspaper. The good news is that the case against the fisherman by the fish was thrown out of court, although on a technicality (the charge was brought in the wrong jurisdiction.) Just how crazy is the Swiss legal system when it comes to this nutty stuff? Under Swiss law, scientists must consider the dignity of animals and plants before embarking on scientific experiments. That’s right - before trying to make a better popping corn, the researcher must ask how the experiment will affect the dignity of the ear of corn. If they don’t, they can be hauled into court. Want to buy a bird, goat or yak in Switzerland? You better make that two, because the law says that it is animal cruelty punishable by up to three years in jail for “socially isolating” certain species. Forget flushing a sick aquarium fish down the toilet in Switzerland - the law says you must first kill the fish with a sharp blow to the head, or immerse them in a mixture of clove oil dissolved in alcohol. Not kidding. So the next time you hear people complain about the legal system and lawyers in this country, remember it could be worse - at least we’re not the Swiss!

Steuben County Department of Public Works The Steuben County Legislature has authorized a Tire Amnesty Day at the Bath Landfill Saturday, May 7, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. This offers County residents a way to keep roadsides clean. Also, the threat of West Nile Virus is minimized from mosquitoes collecting in standing water inside the tires. Residents of Steuben County will be able to dispose of eight (8) car and pickup truck tires at no charge. More than (8) tires per vehicle will be charged at $2.50 per tire. In a few weeks you will be asked to vote in the Dansville School Board election. There are two seats to be filled. I would appreciate your support and vote on May 17th. I am a lifetime resident of Dansville. I have owned and operated several businesses here in town, in addition to working at Groveland Correctional Facility, since 1986.1 am married and have one son in Dansville High School. Many people have asked me why I have decided to run for the school board. Some people think I am crazy. I have been surprised that many of my discussions with residents have brought out negative feelings, and lack of trust in out school district. The people in this community want to have a school and town that they can be proud of. We pay our teachers and administrators well, we hope for winning sports teams and we almost always pass the school budget. We do this because we want the best for our children and our town. I am one of those people. I want the best for my family, town and school. I will admit that I have been disappointed and frustrated with many things in the district. However, I have no personal agenda or axe to grind with the school system. I feel the best way to address issues and challenges is to become involved. Complaining with my friends and neighbors really solves nothing. Representing my friends and neighbors will at least be a start. My agenda will be what the people of Dansville want addressed. My challenge will be to try and instill common sense and trust in our school district. With the economy and tax base in Dansville, we need to be smart and careful. There are many tough decisions to be made in the next few years. Please allow me to help in this process. On May 10th, at the next school board meeting, I have asked that the candidates be allowed to say a few words and address the voters. I welcome your attendance, and hope to see many of you there.
