DAVID MURRAY FOR WEST SPARTA HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT West Sparta Residents, I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve as your Highway Superintendent for the past eight years and again ask for your support on Election Day - November 8th. As many of you know, West Sparta is a great place to live and raise a family and that is what I chose to do over thrity years ago. When I first ran for Highway Superintendent I did so because I realized the importance of keeping our roads open and passable - this is important for both our local economy and morale as a community. During my tenure as Highway Superintendent for West Sparta, I have worked hard to make sure our roads are usable and that the Highway Department is responsive to daily needs, but fiscally prudent as well. Being Highway Superintendent involves more than the roads, there are many things I’ve worked on behind the scenes to make sure our Highway Department is able to provide annual road upkeep, while addressing emergency needs which arise. From the flooding we had in 2003, to the significant amounts of snow we had last winter, I’ve made sure paperwork was timely submitted to FEMA, securing signifcant assests to repair our roads and replenish funds. I prepare the vouchers to pay invoices, attend safety seminars, meet OSHA requirements, and lobby for funds with Congressmen and Senators every year in Albany. I also attend Cornell’s Highway School where I learn about legal issues as well as the most current road building procedures and regulations. I prepare the employee payroll records and accrual sheets, keep current on fuel tank inspections and provide proper paperwork to the Department of Environmental Conservation, and I hold a CDL so I can work on site with our highway employees. Since becoming Highway Superintendent, I have done more with less. All of the increases I have recommended in our “road budget” have been $5,000 or less and I have personally not made any recommendations for increases in the past three budget cycles. With these small increases I have helped ensure that taxes for West Sparta stayed as flat as possible. Another way our department has done more with less is when our employees are not available to work for the county I work in their place. My work ensures that West Sparta still receives revenue for their wages as well as the money for equipment used on county projects. In the winter, my day starts at 3am when I personally check the roads in order to get them open earlier for the morning traffic and school buses. I implemented the use of treated salt which lowered salt usage by 200 tons and sand by 600 tons. This change has reduced material, frieght and labor expenses; furthermore, treated salt is less corrosive on our roads and vehicles. As a Department, when time and ability allow, we do our own repairs for breakdowns, again saving the taxpayers money. On rare occasion I have subcontracted some road repair work when it was evident that the necessary repairs would have exceeded the highway department’s resources availability or workload capacity. I always try to please all of the taxpayers to the best of my ability and as our budget will allow. There is a great deal that goes into being a Highway Superintendent and I feel that I have a good grasp on what all is entailed and how to keep the department running smoothly. Being Highway Superintendent is more about the community of West Sparta, than it is about me, and I would like to continue to serve our town. I’ve always had a policy that anyone can reach me at any time, day or night, with needs, concerns, or suggestions and will continue to do so. Dig into these pumpkin facts Pumpkins are a common sight come around Halloween. This fruit of the fall is often used in decorating the interior and exterior of homes, but can be an integral component of cooking and baking as well. Little thought is given to pumpkins and their makeup. But pumpkin afficionados who want to know more about these delicious gourds can dig into the following facts. Pumpkins are a member of the squash family that grow on long vines close to the ground. Before pumpkin fruit grows, brightly colored flowers will form and then turn into pumpkins. Pumpkins adapt to many climates and are grown on all of the continents except Antarctica. In colonial times, settlers and natives alike relied on pumpkin as a staple of their diets. The British saw the possibilities of pumpkins as a food source and
brought seeds back to Europe to enjoy as well. Pumpkins are comprised of several parts. The pumpkin is covered in a skin that surrounds the pulp, or the meaty part of the pumpkin. The stem is at the top of the pumpkin and connects to the vine. Tendrils are thin pieces of vine that
tether the pumpkin to the ground to protect it from the wind and weather. The inside of the pumpkin is known as the cavity and can contain seeds and fibrous strands. The bottom of the pumpkin is known as the blossom end because that's where the flower started before the pumpkin formed. Most varieties of pumpkins are edible, but some taste better than others. Once pumpkins turn orange they can be eaten. People bake the meat into pies, soups and stews. It can also be used in breads and cakes. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in cake recipes much in the same way applesauce can. Adding pumpkin to recipes provides a healthy way to increase nutritional value. Pumpkins are a seasonal delight to many come the fall. But in addition to being delicious, they're also interesting.

n adult dealing with the many responsibilities of being a parent and earning a living might not be aware that, from a child's perspective, going to school, maintaining friendships and living up to expectations is every bit as stressful. Developing that awareness is one of the first steps toward helping children ease their stress. Linda Castor is a registered nurse and a licensed clinical professional counselor who works at the Clocktower Therapy Center in Springfield, Ill. She said some of the warn-

ing signs of a child under stress are dropping grades, subtle changes in personality and a revolving cast of friends. She said the first response to such signs is to encourage a child to open up and talk about what they are feeling. "Above and beyond, be a good listener. You want them to be able to talk about their feelings," Castor said.

the cause of the stress. "One of the main causes of stress for children is when their parents' expectations are too high. The high-expectation parent maybe didn't get what they wanted growing up, so they want to live through their kids," she said. Parents must walk a fine line between encouraging their children to try new things that will challenge them and pushing them into uncomfortable or undesirable situations. Participating in sports, for example, can be a rewarding experience with many positive social and health benefits. For some children, however, sports can be a source of embarrassment, or perhaps just boring. "Parents need to look at themselves and say, 'Hey, is this really about me?'" Castor said.
How to alleviate their stress In addition to getting a child to open up, there are many things parents can do to alleviate or eliminate the causes of stress. Providing children with a regular daily routine and enforcing rules consistently provide a structure of familiarity and comfort. Healthy eating and exercise also can help a child better cope mentally. Castor also recommends frequent neck and shoulder massages. Depending on the child and the situation, a parent may want the services of a professional therapist or counselor. Signs that such assistance may be needed include frequent tantrums, harming oneself and becoming withdrawn or uncharacteristically clingy. Not all symptoms of stress are exhibited through a child's behavior. Physical ailments, often in the form of headaches or flulike complaints, can also arise when a child is suffering from stress. Castor recalls one young man whose chronic back pain was eventually diagnosed as a psychosomatic response. In such instances, therapists are careful that all possible medical causes have been ruled out before treating it as an emotional issue.
