SUMMER SUMMARY Children read and created, laughed and learned, all summer long at the Library’ s Children’ s Annex this summer. “One World, Many Stories” Reading Club had 40 members who read 390 books & 16,500 minutes! “Writing Barefoot V” a weeklong Writing Workshop with Dan Folts included the production of a website which can be viewed at http://writingbarefoot.weebly.com. Renee Coombs’ delightful “Crazy Art” Painting Workshop finished up its week with a special art show and attendees in colorful costume. Librarian, Cris Riedel delighted all with her GVCA program, “Stories Near, Far and Really Far.” These programs would not be possible without the support of GVCA Decentralization Grants; Dansville Dental Professionals; Dansville Family Dental; Friends of the Dansville Public Library; Millcreek Optical; and Federal LSTA Institute of Museum & Library Services via NYS Library. A “Very Special Thank You” is in order for the many daily volunteers at the Children’s Annex. A BIG THANK YOU to Jamie and Philip Blum, Lynne Blum, and Courtney Lowe.

The automotive filter manufacturer was making a point that a timely investment in changing the oil and replacing the filter, as opposed to neglecting this service, could avert a major repair expense. Even with improved engines, oils and filters, and despite educational efforts by the auto service industry, people still neglect their vehicles. Statistics from vehicle check lanes during NCCM (National Car Care Month) show a failure rate of 86%. Near the top of the list of discrepancies is low or dirty engine oil. “Inspection lane volunteers have told us some horror stories,” reports Car Care Council’s Vice President, Donna Wagner. “There have been cases

where oil isn’t even up to dipstick level. You can imagine the condition of those engines.” Low or dirty oil suggests an accumulation of contaminants in the crankcase and in the passages that carry oil to internal engine parts. This can result in restricted oil flow within the engine. Eventually inadequately lubricated engine parts wear out and the owner pays the price of this oversight. Inadequate coolant protection was the leading discrepancy, having had the dubious distinction of having been the cause for 32% of all vehicles to fail inspection. The Council suggests having your coolant checked annually, flushing and replacing as needed (at least every other year).

Make Gutter Cleaning Safer and Easier (MS) -- Nobody enjoys gutter cleaning. Yet it's much more important than many homeowners think. Rain flowing over windows, doors, and siding can rot fascia as well as door and window framing. Most homeowners know they need to clean their gutters in the fall. But once you understand the importance of gutters, you'll know why its vital to clean them out anytime they get full. Learn from Tragedy A recent one-car car crash in Orleans County took the life of seventeen year old Terry Moyer, Jr. of Albion. Another passenger was also badly injured, as was the driver. Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be factors in the crash. Aside from the obvious lessons we should be drumming into the heads of the teenagers in our lives, there are likely other lessons to be learned from this tragedy, namely, the importance of the right insurance coverage. Yes, I know that talking about insurance coverage is painful, and that paying for the right coverage is more painful, but being without it when you most need it is the most painful of all. What are the insurance issues that will likely come up in this unfortunate crash? First, the driver hopefully had a lot of liability insurance, which protects him and the registered owner of the vehicle from the claims that will almost certainly be brought by the family of the deceased teen and those by the other injured passenger. In a case like this, let’s hope that there is at least $1,000,000 in liability insurance. Not likely. Next, because there is a high probability that there will not be enough liability insurance to compensate the crash victims, let’s hope the crash victims are covered under a supplemental policy (“SUM” insurance) with limits of at least $1,000,000. Again, unless you have a great insurance agent (one that will strongly encourage you to buy the coverage, to the point of teeing you off ), that isn’t likely either. What are we telling you? Call your insurance agent right now, and buy as much liability and SUM insurance as they will sell you. Yes, paying for insurance stinks, but it is money incredibly well spent.
