ANTES sponsors targeted communication activities to support the Voluntary Education (VolEd) community in efforts to foster better service members through quality education opportunities. This month’s issue focuses on information tools that VolEd professionals can use as they help service members navigate unique education pathways.

These tools are available to increase VolEd professional’s awareness of education programs that are designed to ensure military student college readiness and academic success.

Ever had a question regarding a DANTES-sponsored program? Get answers to your questions by chatting with us live on the DANTES website. VolEd professionals, service members, and school representatives can chat online with a DANTES representative during normal hours of operation. If a representative is unavailable, you are able to leave a message for a response the next business day.

New Service Member Handouts

To assist counselors as they are helping service members in person or via email, new service member handouts are available. The handouts summa-

rize how DANTES programs can help them, explain exam funding and reimbursement eligibility, and provide a quick reference guide to test preparation material.

Tools for Counselors MyVolEdPath Mobile App VolEd information is now available on mobile devices. The new MyVolEdPath mobile app is a tool aimed at increasing service member awareness of and access to voluntary education programs and benefits. The new app serves as a discovery tool to help military students begin to build personal pathways to their individual education and career goals.

Mobile App Student Handouts Although we live in a digital age, printed handouts are useful ways to inform and remind service members of this new app. Command education service officers, education and family service centers can download a MyVolEdPath Promotional Package at http://www.dantes.doded.mil/education-counselors/index.html. Please email DANTES_outreach@navy.mil if you like to order phone size info cards.

VolEd professionals can use the mobile app in two ways: 1) to encourage students to use the app to aid in making informed decisions on the right programs and benefits that will help them prepare and be ready to succeed while pursuing post-secondary education; and 2) to receive updates of student progress and assessment results from service member initiated emails from within the mobile app.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education (VolEd) Program, through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), offers online, selfpaced, academic skills training courses to improve a member’s math and communication skills.

Both programs assess and identify the learner’s strengths and weaknesses to design customized learning paths for each student. ACE evaluates military training, education and job experience to provide recommended credits on the Joint Services Transcript (JST).

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education (VolEd) Program, through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), offers access to the GED® test, the only nationally recognized opportunity to earn a high school-equivalency credential.

This test provides military members the opportunity to meet education goals beyond the high school level and to further succeed in their military and future careers.

Increases earning potential when seeking employment

On-demand Assistance: Services are available on-demand 24/7 and via scheduled sessions

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: All service members and veterans in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, including active duty, National Guard and Reserve components, are eligible to receive a no-cost JST. Government civilians in the Coast Guard are also eligible. Air Force personnel should contact CCAF to receive transcripts (www.au.af.mil/au/ccaf/transcripts. asp). Air Force personnel who attended joint training offered by another service should email JST Operations (jst@doded.mil) to have a JST processed.

Financial cost and attendance information provided for comparison on schools and education programs

The DoD VolEd Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the USD (P&R) and educational institutions is managed by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES). DoD policy requires educational institutions that wish to participate in the DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) Program sign the MOU conveying the commitments and agreements between the educational institution and the DoD prior to an educational institution receiving funds from a service’s TA program. The DoD MOU serves to protect service members and to help ensure that a quality education is provided through the participating institutions.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education (VolEd) Program, through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) on behalf of the Military Services, coordinates with the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) to provide the Joint Services Transcript (JST) to service members and veterans. The transcript validates service member and veteran occupational experience and training with college credit recommendations determined by the American Council on Education (ACE). The JST helps service members and veterans complete post-secondary degree requirements. The JST can also serve as a guide for developing resumes and/or career portfolios.

The Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness provides overall policy guidelines for voluntary education programs throughout the Department of Defense. These responsibilities are accomplished through the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy and the Chief of Continuing Education in the Educational Opportunities Directorate.

Hot News What is the ACT ID Number?

B

ecause ACT no longer collects social security numbers, they have replaced that information with an ACT ID number. This number matches students with their ACT scores and helps schools locate/access a student’s record.

Approximately one week after receiving their Student Report, military members can use their ACT ID number to create a web account and view their scores online.

REMINDER: How Members Can Get Started with DSST

Students who register for the ACT at a National or International Test Center, will find this number on the bottom of their admission ticket after registra- • tion, and after the scores have been reported, at the top of their Student Report. The ACT ID number is used to view and retrieve scores from a student’s • web account after testing.

Military members who schedule the ACT at a DANTES Test Site, will not receive an ACT ID number prior to testing. That number is assigned during the • scoring process and only appears on the Student Report that is mailed directly to the military mem• ber. The ACT ID number does not appear on the DANTES TCO copy of the Student Report.

TROOPS TO TEACHERS INFORMATION TOOLS

T

roops to Teachers (TTT) is the DANTES program that focuses on helping military members transition from service on the frontlines to service in the classroom. The program helps service members gain the certification and knowledge needed to serve as kindergarten thru 12th grade teachers.

They can be employed in public, charter and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools located throughout our nation and in geographically-separated U.S. territories.

Social Media: This tool provides an opportunity to easily share information about the TTT program with your base community. Please share weekly posts on a regular basis.

DANTES strives to provide all Service education counselors and VolEd professionals with tools to counsel members on the TTT program. Our goal is to assist you with providing up-to-date information on this important military transition program.
