Business Management & Administration The degrees offered through the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Degree Network System (SOC DNS) and the certificates available in the SOC Career and Technical Education (CTE) program were also realigned to occupation projections.

College & Career Planning Counseling Services The College & Career Planning Counseling Services system, powered by Kuder® Journey, offers interest inventories, as well as a host of other features that serve as a one-stop-shop for military personnel as they plan, prepare, and transition to civilian employment. Students and counselors can use the program to find Bright Outlook occupations that are tailored to personalized assessment interests, work values, and skills results to support military student career pathway exploration. For a detailed description of the Kuder Journey program benefits, features, support resources, and available training, read the August 2016 issue of the DIB titled, Determining Your Career and Education Pathway http://www.dantes.doded. mil/dib.html Career Clusters and Holland Codes Kuder Journey interest inventory assessment results are based on Holland codes. Holland codes can help match interests to careers by enabling students to explore career clusters by their interests. Holland codes are personality types created by psychologist John Holland as part of his theory of career choice.

Each Holland code consists of a three letter code that is made up of an individual's three dominant personality types. The six types Holland identified are collectively referred to as RIASEC, the initials standing for the first letter of each of the following personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Of the six codes, assessment results that include combinations of : C (Conventional) and E (Enterprising) may signal that students may be well suited for business management and administration related careers.

Bright Outlook occupations are expected to grow rapidly in the next several years, will have large numbers of job openings, or are new and emerging occupations.

The Green Economy will cause a change in occupation’s employment demand or work and worker requirements such as tasks, skills, knowledge, and credentials.

Realistic: A realistic person prefers concrete tasks. He or she likes working alone or with other realistic people. Some of the careers included in this category are engineer, plumber, audio and video equipment technician, chemist, dentist, furniture finisher, and rail car repairer.

Investigative: Someone who is investigative likes to use his or her abstract or analytical skills to figure things out. He or she is a “thinker” who strives to complete tasks and often prefers to do so independently. These are a few investigative occupations: sociologist, scientist, psychologist, and economist.

Artistic: The artistic members of our society like to create things and they are imaginative. Artistic occupations include creative writer, performing artist (including actor, singer, and dancer), photographer, and fashion designer.

Social: A social person prefers interacting with people. He or she tends to be concerned with social problems and wants to help others. Here are some social occupations: home health aide, certified nurse’s aide, RN, licensed practical nurse, social worker, occupational therapist assistant or aide, teacher, and clergy member.

Enterprising: Those who are enterprising lean toward leadership roles. They are willing to take on challenges and are extroverted. Enterprising occupations include restaurant host or hostess, retail salesperson, attorney, chief executive, chef, and wholesale or retail buyer.

Conventional: Someone who is conventional prefers structured tasks and tending to details. He or she is often conservative. These are some conventional occupations: accountant, bookkeeper, actuary, cost estimator, human resources assistant, and loan officer.

Careers in this field typically require a bachelor’s degree. Several occupations within the Business Management & Administration field are considered Bright Outlook careers by the Department of Labor.

Obtaining Business Education SOC Career and Technical Certificates The Department of Defense (DoD) contracted with Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) to launch the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, aligning with the Defense Department’s Voluntary Education (VolEd) strategic plan. The CTE program serves as a pathway to help service members transition from a military career into the civilian labor market. It operates with a career focus in specific areas that reflect the needs of the military, offer bright employment outlooks for members after military service, and meet certain DoD-established criteria to ensure quality education opportunities for service members. Reminder: No SATs Administered from 1 July-30 Sept 2017

T

est Control Officers at DANTES Test Sites are reminded that SAT testing is not authorized from 1 July through 30 September. Inform potential examinees that the last day to administer the current year SAT Form 73 at DANTES Test Sites is 30 June 2017 therefore any current year forms administered after this date will not be scored.

In lieu of the SAT, use the ACT from July through September. Return all SAT Form 73 examinations immediately after 30 June. New SAT materials are not automatically shipped each year. Once the DANTES Test Site’s previous year’s SAT 73 forms have been received by the testing agency, orders for new FY materials may be submitted after 1 September and administered upon receipt. Improved Test Control Officer Training Course: Prepares DANTES TCOs for their Role

T

Alternate Test Control Officers (ATCOs) and Test Examiners are required to take the TCO Academic Training Course prior to being appointed as a DANTES TCO, ATCO or Test Examiner.

To support this requirement, DANTES developed an online Test Control Officer (TCO) Course. The redesigned course now includes updated program and policy information, easy access to the DEPH and increased instructional design elements that support student learning by incorporating Knowledge Checks throughout the course.

The new course adds many new features to support the dynamic responsibilities of testing personnel and takes less time to complete. Successful completion of the final exam is required and completion certifications are available for print at the end of the course.

Potential TCO and ATCO candidates must be nominated by their headquarters/major commands before they may be registered by HQ DANTES Exams personnel to obtain access to the TCO Training Course. The course is also available to Test Examiners appointed by TCOs. After DANTES receives a system notification of successful course completion, the candidates appointment will be confirmed. Becoming a Business Teacher

By Kirstin Savage, Communications Division, DANTES verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required to engage students. Planning and presenting stimulating lessons are keys to success as a teacher. Business majors can draw upon the wide array of instructional approaches which they have witnessed while completing their degree. After gaining teaching experience, those with advanced education, leadership, problem solving, and academic administrative skills may find additional opportunities for career progression by pursuing careers in Education Administration.

A

ccording to the Department of Labor, teaching careers are considered Bright Outlook occupations. Specifically, teacher assistants and teaching positions at the elementary, middle, and high school level are expected to have a large number of openings over the next few years.

While teaching in high needs subjects such as mathematics, science, and special education are likely to yield the highest job opportunities, teaching business or economics at the secondary/ high school level may be viable options as well.

For those with degrees in business related majors who complete additional teacher education requirements, educating high school students about the business world may prove to be a good fit.
