ast month, the June 2017 DIB introduced the Bright Outlook Career Series. Readers were introduced to how DANTESsponsored programs can help voluntary education personnel assist students in navigating through different Business Administration and Management career pathways. This month’s issue focuses on the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics career fields.

According to the Department of Labor, career pathways listed in these career fields are considered “Bright Outlook” occupations

because they are either expected to grow rapidly in the next several years, will have large numbers of job openings, or are considered emerging occupations. This issue highlights how voluntary education personnel can use the College and Career Planning Counseling Services System, powered by Kuder Journey ®, and the educational institution partnerships through Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Degree Network System and Career and Technical Education programs to help students prepare for civilian careers in Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics.

Transportation and Logistics Transportation & Logistics Career Cluster Pathways areers in the Transportation, Distribution and Logistics career cluster involve the planning, management and movement of people, materials and goods, by road, pipeline, air, rail and water.

Other related professional and technical support services include the planning and management of transportation infrastructure, logistics services, mobile equipment, and facility maintenance. Occupations within this cluster have employment opportunities with education levels ranging from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree.

The Transportation, Distribution and Logistics career cluster has the following career pathways: Transportation Operations Careers in the Transportation Operations pathway include occupations that drive the vehicles that transport people or freight to ensure that passengers or cargo are transported safely and on time.

Logistics Planning and Management Services The Logistics Planning and Management Services pathway involves the planning, management and control of the physical distribution of materials, products and people.

Warehousing and Distribution Center Operations Careers in Warehousing and Distribution Center Operations focus on the operation of transportation and distribution facilities including ports, terminals, warehouses, and other types of facilities. All cargo needs to be tracked, sorted, labeled, and loaded accurately and safely. Timing is also important since many loads must adhere to a schedule in order to satisfy the needs of the customer.

Facility and Mobile Equipment Maintenance The Facility and Mobile Equipment Maintenance pathway includes occupations focused on the operation of transportation and distribution facilities including ports, terminals, warehouses and other types of facilities.

Transportation Systems/Infrastructure Planning, Management and Regulation The Transportation Systems/Infrastructure Planning, Management and Regulation pathway includes occupations related to all aspects of the design and operation of public transportation systems - road, air, sea and rail. Workers might be employed by federal, state and local transportation agencies.

Health, Safety and Environmental Management The Health, Safety and Environmental Management pathway includes occupations that involve assessing and managing risks associated with safety and environmental issues.

Identifying Pathways with Kuder Journey

Distribution Center Operations.

Last month, the DIB explained how the Holland Codes within the Kuder Journey system can help match interests to careers by enabling students to explore career clusters by their interests. Certificates in Transportation, Distribution and Logistics prepare students for various career responsibilities such as planning, purchasing, warehousing, distribution, forecasting, and planning services.

Other duties may include the direct movement, storage, inventory, records keeping, and compiling of stock reports. Certificates in this cluster can lead to occupations as a supply chain logistics manager, warehouse clerk, material handler, purchasing manager, transportation manager, logistics analyst/manager, and more.

Once a student takes the three career assessments within Kuder Journey, education personnel can use the Holland Codes to identify personality types that are mapped to related career pathways. R (Realistic) and C (Conventional) Holland Codes may signal that students are well suited for Transportation, Distribution and Logistics careers.

Obtaining Transportation, Distribution and Logistics Education SOC Career and Technical Certificates The SOC Career and Technical Education (SOC CTE) program serves as a pathway to help service members transition from a military career into the civilian labor market by earning short, stackable certificates. SOC Degree Network System Degrees The SOC Degree Network System (SOC DNS) is a Defense educational institution partnership that delivers specific associate and bachelor’s degree programs to service members that have been vetted for high quality to help address some of the challenges military students face. Day 1 – The team packed early and traveled as Tropical Storm Cindy hit the Gulf Coast. The Eglin education fair was held in the base fitness center, with 40 organizations represented. Approximately 230 Airmen received information on DANTES programs, including Troops to Teachers (TTT). Surprisingly, many of the Airmen we spoke with were already working on their Master’s degree. We also visited with other college reps and shared DANTES/TTT details. This interaction proved beneficial, because many expressed the fact that they thought TTT was no longer operational. On the contrary – TTT is alive and active and a great transition program for service members. This was a great opportunity to share correct information and to highlight the new website, www.proudtoserveagain.com.
