ost-secondary education remains one of the top substantial reasons reported by military members for enlisting into the U. S. Armed Forces.

Education supports career advancement and can lead to success for service members.

When combined with military education and training, service members are better prepared for life after the military.

Taking that first step to begin college can be an intimidating process for anyone, including service members because there are a lot of moving parts to manage. A school advisor might ask for things that are unfamiliar to a first-time applicant or may require them to accomplish steps which seem difficult to complete without any knowledge of where to find the appropriate resources.

Fortunately, within the Defense Voluntary Education (VolEd) community, there are professional military education counselors for each branch of service who are available to provide guidance that may be necessary during the potentially complicated school application process.

DANTES facilitates programs and services to help military members take steps toward becoming military students. By providing access to college admission exams that help meet school entrance and military program application requirements, service members are better prepared for a successful learning experience.

Depending on their accessibility, these exams may be funded up-front or reimbursed by DANTES, saving services members the cost of the exams. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) regarding the undergraduate ACT and SAT exams and graduate level GRE and GMAT exams.

ACT and SAT FAQs Q. How will I know which exam to take or if one is required?

Q. Where can I take an ACT or SAT exam?

A. There are two testing options available.

If the member is located on or near a military installation that includes a DANTES Test Site, they should contact the DANTES Test Control Officer (TCO) for scheduling information and assistance. If the member is unable to test on an installation, they may locate a test center online through the ACT or SAT website.

Q. Are ACT and SAT exams offered at a DANTES Test Site on a funded basis?

A. Yes. Eligible service members may take one ACT (without Writing) and one SAT on a DANTES-funded basis when taken at a DANTES Test Site. Fees for retests at these locations are the service members responsibility. Members do not register on the ACT or SAT websites for administrations at a DANTES Test Site. DANTES reimburses the test fees for two ACT (without Writing) and two SAT exams, when taken at National/International Test Centers. Eligible members are responsible for registration, paying the associated fees and completing the exam before they can submit a request for reimbursement of the test fee. Visit

Q. Will I be funded or reimbursed for taking the optional essays offered by both programs?

A. No. DANTES is only authorized to fund or reimburse the SAT optional essay. Members who are required to take the ACT Optional Writing test are responsible for the fees associated with the optional ACT writing test but will be reimbursed for the ACT test fee.

Troops to Teachers

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY ll current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces may apply to participate in the Troops to Teachers (TTT) program. If determined eligible, members may receive counseling and employment facilitation services. Members can apply via https://secure.doded.mil/ TTTRegistration/

A

Those who meet certain military service and application requirements may also be eligible for TTT financial assistance of up to $10K to support their transition into the classroom. For financial assistance, members must apply for the program within three years of their retirement or separation date from the service. COUNSELING/EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE Once a member’s application is received, processed and determined to be eligible, a TTT participant can receive individual counseling and employment facilitation services. Thirty-one states offer local counseling and employment assistance via state TTT grant offices. A full list of TTT grant states is located at https://www.proudtoserveagain.com/ News/Details/1082.

Participants should visit the TTT website at www. proudtoserveagain.com and click on their state of employment choice to locate state contact information. TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES As part of the counseling and employment facilitation services, Teaching Opportunities are offered to assist program participants with finding employment. These opportunities are located on the TTT website, www.proudtoserveagain.com/ Opportunities# and updated daily/weekly when jobs are submitted by schools in need. Once teaching certification criteria have been accomplished, a participant should visit the Teaching Opportunities page to view teaching options available. When a participant sees a viable teaching option, he/she should enter “More Information” via the icon available. A TTT program specialist should respond to the inquiry within 3-4 business days.
