oluntary education professionals understand that the higher education environment has changed significantly over time, therefore, it is even more important to ensure that military students have the right tools available to make better informed decisions before pursuing a college degree. These tools include: Kuder Journey, Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment (DLRSA), & TA DECIDE.

The Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment (DLRSA) is a short assessment that helps service members: • Gain insight to prepare for a positive distance learning experience.

• Improve online learning readiness through advice on overcoming potential challenges.

Kuder Journey Counselor Support Tools

DANTES Website: College & Career Planning (Kuder Journey) The DANTES website (www.MyVolEd.com) includes a detailed page for each education program. The “College & Career Planning Kuder Journey” page, under Prep for College contains: • Program Overview - includes a brief description of how the program can help service members learn, assess and plan their college and career pathways.

• Student Benefits - highlights how the program can assist service members with their education and career journey.

• Program Eligibility - describes who is eligible to use the Kuder Journey program.

• Video Tutorials – provides access to six video tutorials that helps service members understand how to use the program components (such as registration, the assessments, and the job search tool).

There is also a video for VolEd personnel to register as administrators to access the database management system and service member data. As a site administrator, VolEd personnel will be able to obtain:

• In-depth and custom reports based on service member assessment results • A placement tool to encourage best-fit courses or career programs • Links to service members electronic portfolios

Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment

The military member’s DLRSA results will include ideas for improving their online learning readiness. This advice will help them build the skills they need to succeed in distance learning, such as: Strong computer skills Internet literacy Good study habits The ability to set goals Self-motivation skills Good organization skills Strong work habits

DLRSA results will also pinpoint factors that might increase their chances for online learning success, such as their prior education experience and helpful life circumstances.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? After a service member takes the DLRSA, VolEd personnel unfamiliar with the program may wonder what happens next. Once a service member completes the self-assessment, he/she will receive an email from dantesdlrsa@srca.net with a link to their results and recommensations. Students should be directed to review the results and share them with an education counselor for further discussion, especially if there are areas where significant improvement is recommended. DANTES Website: DoD MOU College Comparison Tool (TA DECIDE) On the DANTES website the “DoD MOU College Comparison Tool (TA DECIDE)” page under “Choose the Right School for You” contains: • Program Overview - includes a brief description of how the program can support service members as they prepare to select the academic institution that best fits their needs.

• Student Benefits - highlights the ways that the TA DECIDE tool helps service members find schools that were vetted by the Defense Department for quality and value.

• Support Resources - provides information on things to consider when choosing a school.

TA DECIDE Counselor Support Tools Other Federal Tools: TA DECIDE is one of many tools available to assist service members with their education planning. Other tools include: • Career Path DECIDE (sponsered by Department of Voluntary Education) - enables service members to explore career pathway, research education and experience requirements, and available credentialing opportunities. This new VolEd tool is available at: https://careerpathdecide.org.

• VA Comparison Tool (sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs) - provides an estimate of GI bill benefits and information about an institution’s value and affordabilility for service members using their veterans benefits. This tool is available at: www.va.gov/ gi-bill-comparison-tool.

TA DECIDE Source Document Want to better understand the outputs within the TA DECIDE tool to support advising service members? The DoD TA DECIDE source document provides detailed information to help VolEd professionals understand: • DoD VolEd policy • Academic institution eligibility to participate in the DoD tuition assistance program • Detailed information on the source of information within the tool • Definition of the data & charts within the tool relevant for advising service members

DoD Tuition Assistance Source Data Are you looking for additional tuition assistance program data to support the development of reports or presentations? Each year DoD VolEd publishes tuition assistance data that includes service level data on schools that received funding. These excel spreadsheets are available on the TA DECIDE website at the bottom of every page.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education (VolEd) Program, through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) provides customized college and career counseling services specifically designed for military students. College and career planning programs include:

Kuder Journey: this comprehensive online resource helps members plan for the future by learning about their individual interests, skills and work values. Students receive a personal career plan, options to explore occupational and educational information, and guidance planning for transition and future employment success.

Lifetime access to e-Portfolio, individual assessments and documents

Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment (DLRSA): helps military learners self-assess their readiness for distance learning.

Students are presented with information for a successful course completion in an online learning environment.

Career and education pathways customized for individual users Career options aligned to educational requirements Helps build job search skills

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: All active duty, National Guard, and Reserve component personnel. Kuder Journey account activation during active duty service provides lifetime access to the program as a transitioning veteran.

The College Board has developed a military landing page to help military-connected students navigate their programs and services. Take a look at the free CLEP Exam Prep page at https://pages.collegeboard.org/college-planning-military?excmpid=vt-00254

Students Can Get Credit for What They Know There are 33 CLEP exams in subjects like American Government and Financial Accounting. Each college decides for itself what subjects they’ll grant credit for, and what counts as a qualifying score.

Search College CLEP Policies

Free CLEP Exam Prep Military students can brush up on their skills with free online CLEP courses for free. The courses are taught by highly qualified college professors and are designed to help students do well on CLEP exams.

Students will also find other free and affordable CLEP study resources, including official sample questions and the 2018 CLEP Official Study Guide, on the College Board website.

How to Register for CLEP Exams For military students to take a CLEP exam, they must register online. They can’t register at a test center. After they register, they should contact their preferred test center to schedule their test date.

Don’t forget that MOUs will expire five years from the effective date, unless terminated or renewed.

Troops to Teachers Spotlight Careers After Military Service

The Troops to Teachers Program Troops to Teachers (TTT) is a military career transition program that helps eligible members of the armed forces begin new careers as K-12 public school teachers.

Skills acquired in the military like leadership, initiative, discipline, integrity, and the ability to thrive in an ever-changing environment are a natural fit for the classroom.

The Program Provides: Counseling and Referral Assistance - guidance on state teacher certification and education requirements leading to employment opportunities Financial Assistance - if eligible, a stipend of up to $5,000 to obtain education, certification or licensing; and a bonus of up to $10,000 to teach in qualifying schools (combination of stipend and bonus may not exceed $10,000)

Teaching is an option for every Service member looking for a rewarding career after the military.
